Paris Olympic Torch Tours Caribbean Side of France: Countdown to NY Carnival Begins

Huge Sports News: Paris Olympics Soon

Buckle up, sports fans! The Paris Olympic Games are making headlines as we near their July 26 commencement. The anticipation is mounting, especially for the iconic Olympic torch’s journey across France and its distant territories – including some in the Caribbean!

Martinique Tourism Authority executive Monique Macaire-Sprott proudly announced in Manhattan at last week’s Caribbean Week conference, “The Olympic torch is in Martinique right now!”

Martinique is one of France’s overseas territories that will briefly host the Olympic torch. This part of the torch’s journey, known as the “Relay Across the Ocean,” is taking the famous flame to key and historic French venues spanning three oceans. Notable stops include not only Martinique, but also Guadeloupe, and French Guiana.

An Exciting Event: New York Carnival 2024

While anticipation builds for the Olympics, the clock is also ticking towards another notable event – the 2024 New York Carnival. This annual fiesta, presenting the best of Caribbean music, food, and culture, will hit Brooklyn from Aug. 29 to Sept. 2.

Happening for five days, the celebration calls for the participation of “mas bands”, groups of party-goers wearing elaborate costumes. Younger “junior mas” counterparts and vendors keen on showcasing their goods and services are also welcome. Registration is now open for everyone wanting to be part of this lively event.

In-depth Exhibition: ‘Shirley Chisholm at 100′

In other news, the Museum of the City of New York is hosting a special exhibit titled “Changing the Face of Democracy: Shirley Chisholm at 100.” Chisholm is a significant figure in U.S. politics and women’s rights, and this exhibition, running until July 20, celebrates her 100th birthday.

Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to U.S. Congress, and the first Black woman to run for U.S. Presidency as a Democrat. She was also a co-founder of the National Organization of Women (NOW), which fought against sexual discrimination in America.

Music Announcement: Barrington Levy Returns

Reggae fans rejoice! Barrington Levy, the Jamaica-born musician, has re-released his 1983 anthemic “Praise His Name.” Rated highly by Jamaican dancers as “prime skanking material,” the song is now available on streaming and digital platforms.

Dominating the Park: Caribbean Culture Awareness

Lastly, the unique Caribbean culture is taking over Prospect Park with “The Legacy of the Chicaba a.k.a. Moko Jumbie!” It’s an event celebrating the region’s African-rooted stilt walkers, coming this Sunday.

Moreover, a “Caribbean culinary paradise” titled “Caribites” will take center stage at Prospect Park Boathouse on June 30. The event features food from Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, the Grenadines, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, plus engaging children’s activities.

In conclusion, the world is buzzing with significant events. From the start of the Paris Olympics and their renowned torch’s journey to the upcoming New York Carnival, and from inspiring exhibitions to music and cultural revelations, there’s something for everyone. It’s indeed a fantastic time to be a sports, music, arts, and culture enthusiast!
