The Out of the Blue Exit
There’s been lots of talk on the US political scene lately. Picture this, from hot debates between presidential candidates to an assassination attempt on one of them, things were getting pretty intense. But here’s the kicker, out of nowhere, President Joe Biden threw in the towel and decided he won’t go for another round in the presidential ring. This, as you can imagine, had tongues in Hollywood wagging.
Why Biden Said No to Re-Election
The world’s attention was on the US in June 2024. It was the night of a heated head-to-head between Joe Biden and Donald Trump in a presidential debate. To say things got intense would be an understatement. The age and health of Biden, who is now in his 80s, came under the spotlight. Quite a few bosses at the Democratic Party suggested he quit while he’s ahead, to spare himself the hassle.
In response to these whispers, Biden agreed to step back from the race. He said he needed to focus on his presidential duties for the remainder of his term. That’s fair enough, right?
Passing the Baton to Kamala Harris
But amidst all the debate, an unexpected announcement emerged. Showing gratitude to his colleagues from the Democratic party, Biden expressed his intention to hand the baton to Vice President Kamala Harris, nominating her as the next in line. Harris accepted the challenge with grace, promising to go after the win.
Hollywood’s Two-Cents
Before the ink dried on Biden’s official resignation statement, Hollywood was already buzzing with opinions. George Clooney, the guy who won an Oscar (yes, that George Clooney), was on the frontline pushing for Biden’s retreat. In a piece for The New York Times, he expressed great respect for Biden but pointed out that age is one opponent Biden might not defeat.
On the other side, Chloë Grace Moretz was all thumbs up for Biden. The star from Kick-Ass used an Instagram story to express her admiration for Biden, calling him the ‘bridge to the next chapter of America.’
It didn’t stop there, Barbra Streisand and Cher also chimed in on the conversation, displaying their support for Biden. Cher, especially, raised concerns about what this election would be without Biden.
Actors George Takei from Star Trek and Mark Hamill from Star Wars applauded Biden’s service and track record during his term.
Next Up: Kamala Harris
Now that Biden is out, all eyes are on Kamala Harris. She’s got her work cut out for her. Should she secure her position as the official Democratic candidate, she could be the first woman president – quite an achievement. But with rumors that old adversary Donald Trump might be back, the journey won’t be easy.
And with that, America, and the world, waits with bated breath, all eyes on the US to see who will come out on top. Hollywood isn’t staying quiet, either. Some aren’t happy about Biden’s decision, while others are excited about the possibility of a new world leader. It’s like watching a blockbuster movie as America’s political scene continue to keep everyone on the edge of their seats. Let’s wait and see where this plot twist leads!
