The sentiment is summed up in the words of Yvonne Martinez, a housekeeper at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto who said, “We deserve this. We deserve to be recognized. We deserve more than what we are getting paid.”

Many health workers, like Martinez, live paycheck to paycheck, despite the often physically demanding, mentally, and emotionally taxing nature of their work. This law provides needed recognition and remuneration for these essential workers.

A Closer Look at the Wage Increment Schedule

The wage increase will not be immediate for all workers. The $25 hourly pay rate will be reached gradually over a number of years, with some workers reaching it sooner than others, depending on the type of facility they work in.

Large hospital system workers will see a pay boost to $23 an hour right off the bat, while rural and “safety net” hospital workers will start at $18 an hour. The wage hike is outlined per employer type by the Department of Industrial Relations. For some, reaching the final $25 mark may stretch as far out as 2033.
