Patients of Female Physicians Live Longer, Study Finds

0

A new study may show that men and women practice medicine differently. In fact, researchers argue hospital patients are less likely to die if their doctor is a woman.

The chances whether you will love longer may depend on the gender of your physician. A new study examined the correlation between morbidity and the physician’s gender.

Researchers asked a simple question: “Do patient outcomes differ between those treated by male and female physicians?”

Researchers found that hospital patients who are treated by a female physician are less likely to die within a month of going to the hospital in comparison to hospital patients who are treated by male physicians. In addition, patients treated by a male physician were actually 5% more likely to go back to the hospital.

After completing a cross-sectional study, researchers analyzed the data of thousands of hospitalized Medicare beneficiaries and found that patients treated by female physicians had a lower mortality rate and a lower readmission rate.

Scientists looked at a random sample of Medicare patents ages 65 or older hospitalized with a medical condition and treated by a general physician from 2011 to 2014.

After analyzing a nationally representative sample, scientists argue that the differences in the way male and female physicians treat their patients has a serious clinical impact.

The two recent studies surrounding female physicians have painted a picture of burnt out women getting paid less than their peers.

A 2016 study by the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston found female physicians who become pregnant and take maternity leave experienced more financial pressure and career dissatisfaction. In addition, researchers reported female physicians were more likely to burnout after having a baby due to the increased financial pressure.

In addition, a 2016 study by Harvard Medical School researcher Anupam B. Jena, MD, PHD found that female physicians paid were nearly 10 percent less than male physicians. In fact, at 24 US public medical schools female physicians were paid significantly less than male physicians regardless of the experience, rank and clinical revenue.

However, this new study illustrates that despite financial pressure and lower compensation female physicians in comparison to their peers, are just as talented, if not better, than male physicians.

On their website, Facebook revealed the release of Group Video Chat in Messenger, allowing Facebook users to video chat with up to fifty people at a time.

“Chatting face-to-face live as a group is perfect for those spontaneous moments when text just isn’t enough… or when you have a major case of FOMO,” Stephane Taine, Product Manager behind Facebook Messenger said. “Group Video Chat in Messenger makes it simple and seamless to stay connected face-to-face.”

Facebook, who reportedly 245 million people making video calls via the Facebook messenger app every month, explained how the new feature works.

How does Facebook messenger group video chat work?

Once a conversation of starts, Facebook messenger users can communicate with up to 50 friends. Friends can join in on the conversation, listen in, talk, or be on camera. Once, more than 6 people are on the Facebook messenger call, only the dominant speaker will be shown to everyone.

What do you have to do?

As long as you have the latest version of Facebook Messenger, then the process simply requires starting a new conversation, clicking the video icon on the upper right corner and then everyone in the group will be notified.

Just last month, Facebook’s other messaging application WhatsApp released video calls to their billion users.

Kik also announces a new group video chat feature

However, it is worth pointing out that Facebook messenger’s competitor KiK announced the release of group video chat conferencing on their mobile app on the same day.

Kik’s new feature will allow for users to make video calls with up to six people.

Kik reportedly says the video chat app was their most requested feature. Engineers provide a different kind of messaging experience in comparison to Facebook.

All users have to do is tap the video chat button in the upper right-hand corner to turn on video. In addition, users can share photos, stickers in gifs while video chatting.

The release of Facebook messenger and Kik’s group video chat conference is probably not a coincidence. As Christmas is less than a week away, the holidays is the time were many family and friends connect with one another. However, with winter storms and flight advisories currently across the country, the Facebook messenger and Kik’s new feature allows for people talk face-to-face even though being miles away.

Meet Waymo’s Self-Driving Chrysler Pacifica Minivans

0

John Krafcik, the CEO behind the newly launched Google company Waymo, revealed a look inside the self-driving Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan.

In a Medium blog post, Krafcik gave an inside look into the Waymo’s self-driving Chrysler Pacifica minivan. Krafcik explained his decision to use a minivan instead of a sports car or SUV arguing that Hybrid minivans allow for people of all ages to experience self-driving technology.

What’s next for the Waymo Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan?

Chrysler Pacifica Waymo

Krafcik shared information behind the designing and engineering process. Waymo and Chrysler have been working to design and create a fully self-driving Chrysler Pacifica for the past six months. In addition, Waymo ran tests including a reported 200 hours of extreme-weather testing to measure the safety and capabilities of the newly innovated Chrysler Pacifica.

Krafcik also explained that the new Chrysler minivan will feature “self-driving technology, including our suite of updated sensors, all-new computer and other major system updates.”

Waymo’s CEO also shared that Waymo plans on releasing the new Chrysler Pacifica on public roads in 2017.

The new Silicon Valley push for artificial intelligent technology

Chrysler Pacifica Waymo

Just last week, Google announced the spin off self driving car company, Waymo. The move is seen as a signal that Google has developed the technology to take self driving cars to market. Also, there same day Google announced Waymo, Uber also announced the company the launch of self-driving car transportation in San Francisco, California.

Google’s move to self-driving cars further illustrates how Silicon Valley’s tech titans are pushing for more artificial intelligence.

Waymo’s self-driving car technology could change the trucking industry

Waymo’s announcement of 100 Chrysler Pacifica minivans equipped with self-driving car technology is just the start for the newly founded Google company. Last week, Krafcik explained that the company plans to expand with additional self-driving cars including trucks, ridesharing services and personal automobiles.

But, the rise of the self-driving cars could cause a paradigm shift in the trucking industry by filling a rising demand for more professional truck drivers.

In 2015, the American Trucking Associations (ATA) conducted a study and found a shortage of professional truck drivers in the trucking industry. In order to increase the supply of qualified truck drivers, companies have offered to pay truck more. In fact, a November 2016 Glassdoor report found truck drivers have received the largest pay raise of about 7.8% per year.

However, with Google’s Waymo already in the process of delivering self driving cars to market, self-driving technology could lead to the biggest technological disruption since the invention of the car. And Waymo’s Chrysler Pacifica is just the start.

Tech Giants Throw their Weight Behind Artificial Intelligence

0

While it is unlikely that robots will take over the world anytime soon, advances in artificial intelligence are already altering how we live and work.  Now, ‘robots’ covers a broad area of study, but one technology of note is Artificial Intelligence (AI).  Basically, it is teaching computers how to learn and companies such as Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Microsoft are frantically researching advances in the field.

AI is not a new science and while it has existed in theoretical form since the dawn of computers, advances in the last 10-years has brought the field out of science fiction and into real life. In fact, IBM is already using their Watson supercomputer to assist Oncologists in making cancer diagnoses and outlining potential treatment options.

Whilst doctors are the final arbiters of treatment options, Watson’s ability to scan and interpret vast amounts of data is helping doctors to remain abreast of advances in cancer treatment.

For its part, Google has opened the code for its DeepMind supercomputer to developers and Microsoft has been working to open the underlying technology for its personal assistant – Cortana.  Both developments point to increasing level of automation in the home and office.

According to a report issued by the Council of Economic Advisors, nearly all jobs with an hourly wage of $40 or less will be disrupted in some way by automation.  While some jobs will disappear completely –- such as long-haul trucking and certain warehouse functions –- other roles are likely to become available.  However, the ability for workers to take advantage of these new opportunities will likely depend on their ability to the relevant skills for a digital workforce.

While the trend might be unsettling for some, tech leaders have embraced the advances to drive growth. Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, is a purported fan of AI and he has publicly called for a world where everyone has their own personal assistant.

The race to develop AI-enabled technologies has heated up so much that tech companies are pillaging colleges and universities around the world to bring in the brightest minds in the space.  While part of the push is to commercialize AI, another area of focus is to develop faster and smarter computers.  This includes investing in the development of quantum computing.  Though still in its infancy, quantum computing is positioned for major breakthroughs in the coming years.

As support from tech giants helps to push the development of AI and related technologies it is likely that the big winners will be the firms who can bring these technologies to market. Given this fact, the early winners include Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and IBM.

Virtual Assistants Are the Hot Sellers This Holiday Season

0

Based on early reports, virtual assistants from Amazon and Google are set to be the big winners in this season’s holiday sweepstakes.

While some analysts thought VR headsets from Facebook or VR-enabled cell phones from HTC or Google could take the top spot, consumers have been enthralled by the promise of virtual assistants.

Amazon Echo

The trend is a big win for the consumer adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) related technologies as it opens the door for a slew of connected appliances, virtual assistants and other home management devices in the near future.  Andrew Uerkwitz, an analyst for Oppenheimer, told Reuters that his group had upped its estimate of Amazon and Google home assistants to nearly 12 million during the holiday season.

While the sale numbers sound low, these devices were not readily available last year and some industry observers believe this will lead a rush of other devices manufacturers bring their own personal assistants to the market.

Cortana Virtual Assistants

Earlier this month Microsoft announced that it was opening up the code for its Cortana personal assistant to appliance manufacturers.  Just last week IBM announced that it was working with BMW to install its Watson Artificial Intelligence (AI) in i Series electric vehicles.  Such moves would help to fuel the predicted explosion in IoT-enabled devices, which Gartner has predicted will easily eclipse 20 billion worldwide by 2020.

However, the growth has also brought up issues regarding security and privacy. One example of potential security concerns was the DDoS attack which happened on October 21st. Hackers relied on security weaknesses in IoT-enabled devices to bring down the servers of internet infrastructure company Dyn. By doing so, they were able to disable the websites of such companies as Twitter, Spotify, PayPal, Verizon, and Comcast among others.

Virtual Reality

Even with the concerns, consumers have been flocking to the home assistants.  So much so that Piper Jaffray has cut its 2016 estimate Virtual Reality (VR) headsets by more than 60 percent.  The revised estimate has raised some eyebrows as the investment bank had previously pronounced that VR would be the ‘next mega tech’ trend.

While it would appear the consumer market for VR has flatlined, industrial applications have gained steam.  One example of this is Ford’s use of VR in its design process.  Another example is a study which is using VR to help veterans to lessen the impact of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Apple Watch
Stock Photo: SEATTLE, USA – May 9, 2015: Man Using App on Apple Watch While Outside. Multiple Apps View. (Anna Hoychuk / Shutterstock.com)

Wearables have also continued to lag.  While several high-profile companies have entered the space — Apple, Garmin, Fitbit — consumer reception has been tepid.  The market is already going through a bit of a shake-up as the owners of the Pebble smartwatch has recently announced they would be ceasing operations and selling their intellectual property to Fitbit.

According to Forrester’s Julie Ask, single-use devices have been losing ground to multipurpose devices, such as Apple’s iWatch – which is on pace to sell more than 5.5. million units during the holiday period. However, this is a far cry from the 20 million devices original expected when smartwatches burst onto the scene in 2014.

Despite the lackluster growth for wearables opportunities remain, especially as device manufacturers use the watches as a platform to integrate with other devices such as personal assistants.

Facebook Fires First Salvo in Fight Against Fake News

0

Facebook releases a new update to combat fake news but, will it actually work?

While fake news is not a new phenomenon, its ability to reach previously unprecedented audiences with the help of social media is something entirely new. As such, many observers have pointed a finger at the likes of Facebook and Twitter for their role of undermining ‘legitimate’ news sources during this year’s election.

There might be some truth to this and earlier this week Facebook took its first steps in the fight against fake news.  The company announced that it has implemented a process to allow users to flag dubious postings and it would also work with the journalists to check the credibility of an article.

While the step was welcomed by most observers, there were some who worried that the process may eventually end up being abused as users and ‘fact-checkers’ rely on personal bias to confirm the authenticity of a posting.  Another issue is the lack of a clear audit trail (similar to Wikipedia) and a process to appeal a decision if a posting has been found to be inaccurate in some way.

In addition, the company announced that it will not remove the posting altogether. However, dubious postings will be labeled with the following warning – ‘Disputed by 3rd Party Fact-Checkers’.  This in itself could raise eyebrows, especially for fake news devotees who tend to discount the reporting of all ‘mainstream media sources’.

Any effort to vet information online is welcome. However, the move by Facebook to raise a number of questions.  First, some analysts have wondered how liable should Facebook be for the information posted on the social media site.  While some would say the company has a responsibility to stop the spread of speech which is hateful or blatantly false.  Others point out that there is a thin line between being diligent and projecting personal bias.

Rand Paul
Stock Photo:COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA – AUGUST 4: Seth D sells Rand Paul buttons outside the Pottawattamie County Republican headquarters August 4, 2014 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. (Eric Francis / Shutterstock.com)

One example of this is a rating given by Politifact to Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and Former Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) regarding a quote on federal income tax prior to 1913.  While both men said basically the same thing, Politifact rated Senator Paul’s comment as ‘Half True’ and Senator Webb’s comment as ‘Mostly True.’  Regardless of political views, this is a clear indication of bias in Politico’s rating system and if Facebook were to run into the same issues, the fallout could several hurt its brand image.

Facebook Fake News
Stock Photo: WARSAW, POLAND – MAY 22: Facebook has over 10 million Polish users. May 22, 2013 in Warsaw, Poland. (Lukasz Stefanski / Shutterstock.com)

In the end, the company is caught between users who see fake news as a threat and those who see it as either satire, novelty, or in extreme cases there only trusted source of news.  The fact that the company feels compelled to take steps probably points to how social media networks are increasingly become echo chambers to amplify one’s views.

As such, the company might want to look at the underlying causes of how the network, which was meant to bring people together, is slowly pulling them apart. That being said, it is probably easier to focus on a rating system for posts.

Germany May Start to Fine Facebook €500,000 for Every Fake News Post

0

Germany could charge Facebook €500,000 for every fake news story.

Earlier this week, Facebook announced a four point plan on how to stop fake news from going viral on the social network. But, Germany government officials do not seem that impressed.

Germany announced a law that would charge a fine of €500,000 or about $523,000 USD for every fake news or hate speech post that is not removed within 24 hours. The new law would require major internet platforms operating in Germany to have a point of contact to review suspected fake news and reported hate speech posts.

According to multiple reports, German government officials called out Facebook arguing the social media company has made a lot of money from fake news. In addition, they argued that when a company makes billions of dollars they have a social responsibility to remove fake news and hate speech.

This news comes after Facebook released a four-point plan to eliminate fake news from the social network, which may help Zuckerberg avoid €500,000 fines.

The social media giant announced plans on changing their algorithm, eliminating spoof sites and downranking disputed stories. In addition, Facebook is partnering with third-party fact checking organizations including Politifact, ABC News and Snopes to stop fake news. Most importantly, Facebook explained a new plan to disrupt the “financial incentives for spammers” by eliminating spoof websites.

Earlier this week, President Obama blamed the media for the rise of fake news. During a press conference on Friday, Barack Obama explained fake news mirrors partisan news reports in America.

President Obama

Obama explained, “If fake news that’s being released by some foreign government is almost identical to reports that are being issued through partisan [U.S.] news venues, then it’s not surprising that foreign propaganda will have a greater effect.”

Obama also called for news reporting based on facts. “I do hope that we all just take some time, take a breath … to just reflect a little bit more about how can we get to a place where people are focused on working together based on at least some common set of facts?”

CDC: New York Drug Overdose Deaths Increase by 135.7%

0

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers are reporting a drastic increase in the number of illicit drug overdoses death.

In the “Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report”, scientists reported a rise a 300% increase in the number of drug overdose deaths from 1999 to 2014. The cause of the rise in drug overdose deaths? Researchers point out that opioid drugs are the problem.

CDC researchers analyzed drug overdose deaths from 2010 to 2015 and specifically centered on opioid drug overdoses from 2014 to 2015. The CDC explains the growing market of heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl – an opioid medication that is several times stronger than heroin is the main public health crisis affecting Americans. In fact, the rates of deaths caused by opioids drugs have increased across the United States.

Researchers also pointed out that there has been a rise in drug overdose deaths since 1999. From 2014 to 2015 the number of people dying from drug overdose deaths increased by 11.4% as the number of drug overdose deaths increased by over 5,000 individuals. Meanwhile the number of opioid related drug overdoses increased by 15.6%.

The CDC also revealed that opioid related drug overdoses have increased dramatically in the Northeast and Southern United States. In fact, the largest increase in drug overdoses occurred in New York, followed by Connecticut and Illinois. Scientists argued that the number of people who died from a drug overdose in New York increased by 135.7%. Meanwhile, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Virginia saw a decrease in opioid drug overdoses.

The CDC further explains that a public health and law enforcement initiative is urgently needed to combat drug overdose deaths.

The CDC provided solutions to the growing Opioid drug overdose problem include:

  1. Improving access and use of prescription drug monitoring programs
  2. Enhancing naloxone distribution
  3. Increasing opioid use disorder treatment facilities
  4. Supporting law enforcement with strategies to reduce the supply of opioid drugs.

Last November, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) called prescription drugs the most significant drug-related threat to the United States.

In addition DEA report, the government agency pointed out that nearly 50 different people died as a result of taking a deadly synthetic drug called U-47700. In the report, the DEA explained U-47700 is a new type of synthetic opioid that is similar to heroin and prescription opioids but nearly 7 times stronger.

Typically sold in the form of a powder or a tablet, the DEA explains that the product is being sold as either illegal heroin or as an opioid medication. Consequently, drug users do not know what kind of drug they are ingesting. In a statement, the DEA argued U-47700 creates a “”Russian Roulette” scenario for any drug user”.

Nintendo’s Stock Price Drops After the Release of ‘Super Mario Run’

0

On Thursday, Nintendo released “Super Mario Run”.

The newest spin-off in the “Super Mario Bros.” franchise is supposed to be one of the biggest mobile games of the year. Analysts predicted that the company will earn $100 million in the next few weeks. However, by Friday Nintendo’s stock price dropped nearly 8%.

What is Super Mario Run?

With the Nintendo’s new mobile gaming app, the gameplay is simplified mirroring the earliest versions of Mario. The game works like many other side-scrolling mobile gaming apps. Players essentially guide Mario over hurdles, enemies, and collect coins.

The goal is to reach and save the princess after completing several levels and defeating major bosses in the process as fast as possible.

However, Super Mario Run features a new and modern twist called “Toad Rally”. Mixing a social network with multiplayer gaming, Super Mario Run users can compete against other players and friends in the app.

Playing the game mode can earn the player coins used to buy items for customizing their “Mushroom Kingdom”, a gameplay mode similar to Farmville. In addition, players can unlock other characters including:

  • Yoshi
  • Toadette
  • Princess Peach
  • Luigi

For all intensive purposes, Super Mario Run is a freemium app. While the first few levels of the game are free, if a player is interested in completing the full game they would have to pay $9.99 for all of the features.

Nintendo of America’s Senior VP of Sales and Marketing hailed the new mobile application in a statement saying “Super Mario Run brings a new take on the series’ beloved action-platforming gameplay to iPhone and iPad for the first time.”

Why did Nintendo make Super Mario Run?

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata argued that the company would lose their identity and “cease to be Nintendo”, if they designed mobile gaming apps. But, by 2014 as the video game company announced a $240 million loss in the financial year, due to the lack of video game sales.

Iwata then explained in 2015 a new mission to transition Nintendo into the mobile gaming arena. Nintendo would partner with Niantic, Inc and The Pokémon Company to release the critically acclaimed and the hugely successful Pokémon Go.

On September 7th during Apple’s annual iPhone event, Super Mario Run was officially announced to the world. Currently available as an iOS app with a scheduled release on Android device at a later time.

Since the release of Super Mario Run reports estimate that the app was downloaded nearly 3 million times on the first day it was was released – beating Pokémon Go.

By Friday morning, Super Mario Run was the most downloaded app in the App Store.

A consumer report by Newzoo expects the mobile gaming app to earn $100 million revenue in the next few weeks. Arguing the the combined promotional campaign alongside Apple’s iPhone 7 and the anticipation surrounding the strong Mario branded game will prove highly profitable for Nintendo.

However, by Friday evening Nintendo’s stock (NTDOY) dropped 7.67%.
