Waymo: What’s Next for Google’s Self Driving Car Company?

0

As part of a broader strategy to realign the company’s operations, Google announced on Tuesday that it would spin off the company’s self-driving car unit.  The new company will be called Waymo and the move is viewed as a signal that the underlying technology has moved beyond the development stage.

The announcement coincides with news that Uber was expanding its test of their autonomous delivery service from Pittsburg to San Francisco.  These moves are an indication of the hundreds of billions of dollars which are at stake in the race to develop commercially viable driverless vehicles.

Google, who was once viewed as the leader in developing technology in this space, has lost ground in recent years to a several companies who have been able to bring autonomous vehicles to the market.  This group includes companies such as Uber and Tesla, as well as several automakers who have integrated features of driverless cars into latest models.

The Department of Transportation has also set aside nearly $160 million in grants for its smart city initiative – a big part of which is dedicated to mobility solutions.  This has also drawn companies such as IBM, Intel, and GE into the space.  While these companies are not developing their own autonomous vehicles, their technologies will help to power the driverless roadways of the future.

Adding to the competition is Ford CEO, Mark Fields, who recently told Bloomberg that the company is ‘dedicated to putting autonomous vehicles on the road for millions of people, not just those who can afford luxury cars.’  In doing so, companies like Ford and Google will be at the forefront of the biggest disruption to transportation since the car was introduced more than 120 years ago.

The spin-off allows Google parent Alphabet to position the car unit as a technology service provider to automakers and ridesharing services.  This could include Uber competitor Lyft as well as public bus services.  Another potential application would be long-haul trucking as autonomous vehicles would help to address driver shortages and safety concerns in the industry.

Since its inception in 2009, Google’s self-driving cars have logged more than 2.3 million miles.  Last year the company completed the world’s first completely driverless test when the vehicle helped a blind passenger navigate public roads in Austin, Texas.

According to sources, Waymo will remain a privately-held company under the Alphabet umbrella for the time being.  However, industry insiders speculate that rapid success could lead the company to IPO the Waymo unit as a separate entity.

Share of Google parent company Alphabet were trending up in pre-market trading on Tuesday.

After 2 million miles of self-driving and years of testing, Google is taking their self-driving car project out of development and into the hands of car companies. Starting Tuesday, as a company under the Google umbrella, Waymo will take their proprietary self-driving car technology and transform it into a commercial product.

What is Waymo?

“Imagine if everyone could get around easily and safely, without tired, drunk or distracted driving,” that is how Waymo describes their new company on their website. Highlighting the ability for people to spend more “doing what you want to do.”

Waymo CEO John Krafcik explained the company’s mission is to “make it safe and easy for people and things to get around.” However, what is next? According to Krafcik, expect to see the expansion of self-driving cars in the ridesharing, truck driving, and personal driving markets in the years to come.

Krafcick elaborated that the future of Waymo lies in “the ridesharing business, trucking, logistics, even personally used vehicles and licensing with automakers.”

Currently, Waymo is testing their self-driving car technology in California, Washington, Arizona and Texas. The technology works by using sensors and software to detect objects up to two hundred yards away in all directions. Waymo explains that their companies’ sensors not only detect but also predict the behavior of motorists. In addition, self-driving cars have the ability to respond to closed lands or complicated situations such as railroad crossings.

Currently, the company has two different prototypes including the Lexus RX450h, a smaller prototype car (shown above) and an expected 100 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans coming soon. Currently, there are test drivers who are behind the wheel who share the experiences with Google designers and developers.

What happened to Apple’s self-driving car?

In October, Apple’s self-driving project “Project Titan” was reportedly headed in a new direction starting 2017. According to reports, Apple was interested in working with automakers immediately or develop their own car at a later time. In fact, a Bloomberg report that hundreds of employees within the “Project Titan” team were either reassigned or cut with the remaining staff to allegedly encouraged to provide a new direction for the project.

Is the government ready for self-driving cars?

Self-driving cars are expected to cut down the number of traffic related deaths, which total a million worldwide per year. As well as provide a new form of transportation for millions of people who are unable to drive.

On Tuesday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a proposed rule that would require vehicle-to-vehicle, also known as V2V communication.

Similar to WiFI, V2V communication uses DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communications) radio singles that send and receive short messages over the course of 1,000 to 1,500 feet. One vehicle would have the capability of sharing speed, braking, position and direction. Vehicles receiving these messages would be able to send drivers alerts. Essentially, cars would be able to talk to each other.

But, it would take a few years, if enacted, before it becomes mandatory. NHTSA spokesman Bryan Thomas explained in a statement that it would take about three years after the notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) before talking cars becomes a Federal Motor Safety Standard.

Thomas explained, “The whole process from publication of the NPRM to final rule usually takes about one year,” Thomas said.

Thomas continued, “Two years after that the phase-in period begins with half of new vehicles in the first year being affected, 75% in the second year and 100% from the third year on.”

The future of self driving cars?

But, Google is not alone in the self-driving arms race towards self driving cars. Apple, Uber, Tesla and even Chinese web service company Baidu announced their plans to bring self-driving cars to consumers. In fact, last October, Uber and Budweiser teamed up to deliver a truckload of beer across Colorado, highlighting the possible disrupt in the trucking industry.

Shares of Google were trading up on Tuesday evening, following the announcement of Waymo.

After Rumors of Problems, Apple AirPods Are Finally Here

Apple releases wireless headphones Apple AirPods to the public on Tuesday.

After rumors that Apple’s AirPods would not be available until after Christmas, Apple announced the launch and sale of AirPods. This comes after one of Apple’s biggest technological disrupts, the removal of the headphone jack from the iPhone 7. In addition, Apple delayed the release of AirPods indefinitely explaining that the company did not want to ship a product “before it’s ready.” Anonymous sources told the Wall Street Journal that the delay in the sale of AirPods was due to wireless problems.

In a blog post, Apple announced the opportunity for people to purchase wireless headphones online and starting next week, stores will begin selling the new device at their local stores and authorized resellers.

What makes AirPods different than the other Apple products is the newly designed W1 chip. According to Apple, the AirPods’ W1 chip allows for higher-quality audio and longer lasting battery life. AirPods will be able to last for up to five hours off of a single charge and can the charging case can recharge the AirPods, providing 24 hours of additional listening time.

The new W1 technology will also spread to the company’s Beats headphones as the wireless BeatsX headphones will also feature the same wireless chip as the AirPods. However, those headphones were reportedly delayed until February 2017.

If Teens Are Not Doing Drugs, Then What Are They Doing?

0

American teens using less drugs, smoking fewer cigarettes and drinking less alcohol, which begs the question – what are teens doing instead?

In 1999, 1 out of 20 high school sophomores tried cocaine. Seventeen years later, cocaine use is down to only 1.3 percent of 10th graders. But cocaine use is not the only illicit substance declining among teens. In 1996, nearly 1 out of 5 eighth graders reported getting drunk in the past year. Now, only 5.7 percent of twelve year olds report getting drunk.

Published in the 2015 National Institute of Health annual study, Monitoring the Future survey, researchers found that there is a major shift in teen behavior and drug use. The studies showed a continued decline in the many illegal drugs including alcohol, tobacco and marijuana. In addition, prescription medications were also on the decline. Researchers surveyed middle school students and high school students as part of an annual survey monitoring drug use among teens.

Medical Marijuana

What’s interesting is that as marijuana becomes legal across the country, the number of eighth graders using marijuana in the past month declined from 6.5 percent to 5.4 percent. This maybe due to the attitudes towards marijuana. In fact, according to the study 44 percent of 10th graders believe marijuana smoking is harmful.

However, four years later, marijuana use in the past month among high school seniors is nearly 25 percent with 22.5 percent reporting using the drug and 6 percent report using it daily. In addition, states with medical marijuana laws also report higher weed use among teens (38.3 percent) in comparison to states without medicinal marijuana laws (33.3 percent).

Nora D. Volkow, M.D., and director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) explained that public health prevention efforts and public policy changes are helping decrease drug use among teens. But, that does not mean Americans should celebrate. Dr. Volkow argues that the 6 percent of high school teens using marijuana daily is worrisome.

“However, when 6 percent of high school seniors are using marijuana daily, and new synthetics are continually flooding the illegal marketplace, we cannot be complacent. We also need to learn more about how teens interact with each other in this social media era, and how those behaviors affect substance use rates,” Volkow explained.

So what are teens doing instead? A 2016 study by Business Insider found that teens are getting phones earlier and spending approximately six hours per day on their cell phone. In addition, reports suggest that many teens are spending every minute of their waking lives in front of some sort of screen, either a cell phone, computer or a television. In addition, studies have shown that  Snapchat is one of the most popular apps among teens, followed by Netflix and Instagram. What’s not as popular among teens? Facebook.

With an entire generation living vicariously through social media absent of any mind altering substances, it truly begs the question – are teens addicted to social media and not drugs? A May 2016 UCLA researchers discovered that a teen’s brain reward regions becomes excited when teenagers see high numbers of “likes” on their photos.

The study analyzed 30 different teens ages 13 to 18. Researchers told the teens they will be participating in a small social network, similar to Instagram. In the experiment, the researchers showed the teens hundreds of photos on a computer screen, including 40 photos the teens submitted. Meanwhile, researchers used an fMRI to see which parts of the brain were activated while the teens browsed the social network. Researchers found that the reward part of the brain, the same part of the brain that becomes excited when someone eats candy, or uses a prescription opioid such as fentanyl or an illegal drug such as heroin, became ignited when they teens saw their photos had “likes”.

The nucleus accumbens is known to be the reward pathway for several prescription medications and illegal drugs including “heroin”. When a heroin user injects the drug, high levels of the neurotransmitter Dopamine are sent to the nucleus accumbens causing an euphoric feeling. The same reward pathway occurs when teens see a large number of “likes”.

While the study did not suggest social networks were as addictive as heroin, researchers did note that large number of “likes” had a larger effect on the teens than just a few. So much so that social media can impact behavior. Researcher in the UCLA study, Lauren Graham explained, “If your teen’s friends are displaying positive behavior, then it’s fabulous that your teen will see that behavior and be influenced by it.”

Graham also added that it is important for parents to be aware of what their teens are seeing on social media and who they are friends with.

“It’s important for parents to be aware of who their teens interact with online and what these friends and acquaintances are posting and liking,” Graham explained “In addition, teens’ self-identity is influenced by the opinions of others, as earlier studies have shown.”

Microsoft Plans to Bring Virtual Assistants to Home Appliances

0

On Monday, Microsoft announced it is working on offering its Cortana virtual assistant to a slew of consumer-focused Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The move will bring the world of the Jetsons one step closer to reality and was announced at the company’s WinHEC conference which was held in China – home to many IoT component manufacturers.  According to sources, some of the first Cortana-enabled devices are expected to hit the market next summer after Microsoft releases an update to Windows 10.

Cortana Program Manager, Carla Forester, noted appliances manufacturers are beginning to add touch screen displays to the appliances they are building.  Mrs. Forester added that ‘any kind of smart device with a screen can now take advantage of Cortana.

Faced with a shrinking PC market and almost no share in the mobile phone sector, Microsoft sees appliances and connected devices as an important part of the company’s future.  According to Gartner, there will be nearly 21 billion IoT-enabled devices deployed by 2020.

Of this total, more than 13 billion are expected to be consumer appliances.  Granted mobile phones are considered IoT-enabled devices, but a total to 13 billion devices would represent near doubling from the number of devices currently deployed.

Microsoft Computer Cortana
Stock Photo: Melbourne, Australia – Jun 13, 2016: Using Cortana on Surface Pro 4. It is an intelligent personal assistant created by Microsoft for Windows 10. (ymgerman / Shutterstock.com)

As part of the company’s drive, Microsoft is working to upgrade Cortana’s speech communication capabilities.  This includes a ‘Wake on Voice’ feature which will be part of next year’s Creators Update to Window 10.

The company is betting that appliance manufacturers will latch onto these updates and will begin licensing Windows 10.  The potential applications of IoT-enabled home devices are immeasurable.  Including refrigerators which can automatically reorder food based on the user’s preference, to home heating and air conditioning which can remotely monitor conditions.

One of the biggest challenges for Microsoft or any company moving into the IoT space is security.  In October, several high-profile websites, such as Twitter, was shut down due to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack. According to internet security experts, the attack was made possible by targeting poorly secured IoT devices which were then used to bombard the targets servers until they were overloaded and crashed.

While Microsoft’s software was not involved in this high-profile incident, it does highlight legitimate security concerns connected to IoT devices.  As such, Microsoft and appliance manufacturers should consider security measures as well as connectivity.

Shares of Microsoft opened up .14% in early trading on Tuesday at $62.26.

Nearly 20% of Americans Use Psychiatric Drugs Every Year

0

Psychiatric drug use is on the rise, study reports.

When Kanye West was hospitalized for a psychiatric medical breakdown, mental illness was placed in the forefront as millions of Americans watched, via social media, the mental breakdown of of the biggest entertainers of 2016. And while we will not know what really happened to one of music’s biggest recording artists until the new season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, prescription drug use is currently being used now more than ever.

According to a new research study, 1 in 6 Americans use psychiatric drugs. That number has increased in comparison to a 2011 SAMHSA study which found 11.5% of Americans taking psychiatric drugs.

In fact, the research study found Caucasians, women and older patients were more likely to be taking psychiatric drugs. In fact, 21% of whites reported taking psychiatric drugs that is nearly twice as many black adults (9.7%), and 4 times as many Asian adults (4.8%).

The psychiatric drug use study also found women were also more likely to say they were taking psychiatric prescription drugs as 21% of women and 12% of men reported taking psychiatric drugs. Psychiatric drug use also increases as Americans get olders.

The lead researchers also discovered Americans who start taking psychotic prescription medications end up taking the medication for a long period of time. In fact, 84.3% American psychiatric drug users had at least 10 prescriptions for psychiatric drugs.

The study, which was published in “JAMA Internal Medicine” and studied by Thomas Moore, AB and Donald Mattison, MD, analyzed over 300,000 prescription records from over 37,000 adults ages 18 to 85 years old. The details of the study found that antidepressants were the most prescribed medication, followed by sedatives, and antipsychotics. In addition, Zoloft, Celexa and Xanax were the three most prescribed psychiatric drugs.

Mattison and Moore ultimately explained, “Safe use of psychiatric drugs could be improved by increasing emphasis on prescribing these agents at the lowest effective dose and systematically reassessing the need for continued use.”

Instagram Live is Finally Here

0

Following in the social media giant’s parent company Facebook, Instagram launches Instagram Live to the world on Monday.

As companies compete for millennials’ attention, more and more social media apps are turning to Live video features in order to embrace the moment and time users spend on the app. Snapchat is currently working on releasing a Live video feature, Twitter already has live video capabilities and Facebook is currently spending millions to teach and attract users to try out their Facebook Live feature. Now, on Instagram’s Live feature is available to US users.

Last November, Instagram announced a brand new feature available to all Instagram users. The new feature will allow users show their followers exactly what they are doing. In addition, Instagram released a feature the mirrors Twitter’s Periscope app, which allows for users to see what other people are doing Live. However, the biggest difference in Periscope and Instagram is Instagram’s algorithm will pick and choose what videos a particular user sees.

But what’s the difference between Instagram’s live video feature and Facebook’s Live? It will have to be Instagram’s “Top Live” section for users. The “Top Live” feature will allow for users to see a curated listed of the best content shared on the Instagram app. In addition, Live videos are not stored onto your Instagram account, therefore followers can only see what you are doing while you’re broadcasting.

Facebook is investing heavily in video sharing. A report by Mashable showed the social media giant is investing millions of dollars showcasing, teaching, and informing people how to use the Facebook Live feature. So much money has been spent that reports show the Facebook Live ad has been seen over a billion times.

However, the biggest problem facing Facebook and Instagram is the “intimidation factor” in which Facebook users are scared to go live and broadcast the details of their lives without, editing and filtering out what they want their friends to see.

The new Instagram features will soon become available to US users in the next few weeks.

Bill Gates Announces $1B Clean Energy Fund, Days Before Trump’s Tech Summit

0

Multi-Billionaire and Microsoft tycoon Bill Gates has gathered a group of his fellow billionaire friends to create a new generation of clean energy technology.

On Sunday night, Bill Gates announced he is launching the Breakthrough Energy Ventures Fund, which will invest up to $1 billion in clean energy technology.

“Our goal is to build companies that will help deliver the next generation of reliable, affordable, and emissions-free energy to the world,” Gates said.

The mission of the Breakthrough Energy Fund is to invest in different sector in order to provide cleaner energy technological innovations. The money will be divided up and invested in cleaner electricity generation, agriculture and transportation. Gates told reporters that he is open-minded to anything that provides clean energy.

Like a meeting with the world’s top .5 percent, Gates teamed up with a group of investors who are worth upwards of $170 billion. The team includes Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, and Alibaba CEO Jack Ma.

Sheryl Sandberg

The coalition of Silicon Valley’s richest innovators and investors, illustrates how the tech industry is committed to clean energy and the environment. This news comes as President-elect Donald Trump, who recently said that nobody really knows if climate change is real, is set to meet with the tech industry’s biggest movers and shakers.

Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg, Apple’s Tim Cook, and Google’s Larry Page are among the top tech names meeting with Trump’s transition team on Wednesday, which could be extremely interesting considering Trump’s election comments on Silicon Valley.

More specifically, in 2013 Trump called out Sandberg on Twitter for her ’60 Minutes’ interview saying the Facebook Chief Operating Officer should focus more on getting Facebook’s stock price up instead of focusing on her ego. Or, the fact that Trump called his Republican primary opponent Marco Rubio Facebook’s “personal senator”, after the Rubio supported a bill that would allow for an increase in H1-B visas.

Then there was last December when Donald Trump called out Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos ownership ties to the Washington Post to avoid paying taxes taxes, saying :

Donald Trump also targeted Apple. After getting asked about the discussion between Apple and the FBI over the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone, Donald Trump called for people to boycott Apple products until the company revealed the San Bernardino shooter’s security number.

How Donald Trump will respond to the billion dollar investment in clean energy via Silicon Valley’s biggest investors and the upcoming meeting with tech titans remains to be seen.

Conflict of Interest Questions May Lead to Shake Up at Facebook

0

As executives at Facebook will attest to, not all news is good news. The company has been pinned as public enemy number one due to its role in disseminating fake news and on Monday, the U.K. newspaper The Guardian ran a story entitled ‘2016: the year Facebook became the bad guy.’  The story looks at examples of ‘unprecedented power’ and ‘digital colonialism’ as it asks questions about Facebook’s growing influence.

However, stories like the Guardian report have push another more damaging report from the headlines.  It is a story of conflict of interest by Facebook’s shareholders in connection with Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s selling most of his shares in the company.  The sale included the establishment of a new share class which allowed Mr. Zuckerberg to maintain control in Facebook even though he currently owns very little stock in the company.

Facebook Conflict

Non-owner CEOs are not uncommon.  In fact, most of CEO of S&P 500 companies are not the majority owners of their companies.  However, the allegation that some of Facebook’s early shareholders colluded to ensure Mr. Zuckerberg maintained control of the Board has raised some eyebrows.

The matter is currently being deliberated in the Chancery Court of the State of Delaware after several shareholders questioned whether this breached the company’s bylaws and Delaware law – the state where Facebook is incorporated.

Another part of the question is whether Mr. Zuckerberg personally used his accumulated voting rights to rig any decision on maintaining control of the company in his favor.  While this is unclear, Mr. Zuckerberg currently holds voting control of the shares of a number of large Facebook shareholders.

Stock Photo: DEAUVILLE, FRANCE – MAY 26, 2011 : Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Press conference at the summit G8/G20 about new technologies – Deauville, France on May 26 2011 (Frederic Legrand – COMEO / Shutterstock.com)

However, the challenge might be the role of an ‘independent’ committee which was established in 2015 to review the terms of this proposal.  This committee included three shareholders who, in theory, were independent from Mr. Zuckerberg and included Susan Desmond-Hellmann, Marc Andreessen, and Erskine Bowles.  Mr. Andreessen’s presence on the board is controversial as his venture capital firm, Andreessen Horowitz, was an early investor in Facebook.

Furthermore, documents acquired by the plaintiffs appear to indicate that Messrs. Andreessen and Zuckerberg may have discussed the details of the plan prior to the committee deciding its opinion on the share restructure.

One potential red flag is the appearance that Mr. Andreessen used his position to gain prior knowledge of the questions which board members would pose to Mr. Zuckerberg about the transaction.  If this is true, then it would appear that Mr. Andreessen was not representing the best interest of shareholders but rather his own shares and possibly his relationship with Mr. Zuckerberg.

Another red flag was the live texting by which Mr. Andreessen revealed details of the Board’s discussion on the matter with Mr. Zuckerberg.

The matter is still pending the resolution could have a major impact on the makeup of Facebook’s Board as several directors could be shuffled and the company may potentially become a target for activist investors who will fight for transparency. Another potential outcome could be the Court’s decision to void restructure the share deal.  While this probably won’t impact Mr. Zuckerberg’s executive role at the company, it may lead to further dilution of his voting rights.

Fans May Soon Be Able to Bring Guns to Stadiums

0

Washington state lawmakers are considering passing a bill that will allow sports fans to bring guns to a stadium.

On average, there are around 91 different people killed by guns, according to a study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Now, an amendment to the Washington state code would make stadium officials unable to stop someone with a concealed gun license from entering the stadium while armed. If passed the law would directly affect Seattle Seahawks’ CenturyLink Field and Seattle Mariners’ Safeco field.

There are major concerns surrounding the idea of mixing alcohol, high energy events and concealed weapons. The NFL responded to the possible amendment by releasing a statement to the Washington Post saying, “We haven’t seen the proposed legislation but we have a policy forbidding carrying a weapon into NFL stadiums.”

The second amendment is a hot button topic in the United States and research shows public safety laws help reduce gun violence and help save lives. An Everytown Research reports that in the past ten years, over 1,000 people were murdered with guns and an additional 4,449 people died from a firearm suicide or accident. But, the biggest difference between the law Washington lawmakers are considering to enact and what research shows is that a majority of police officers killed by a firearm were by people who were prohibited from possessing a firearm. And the new amendment will only allow for authorized gun owners to enter the stadium armed.

Gun Show

But, that statistic is marred by the fact that at gun trafficking from 2006 to 2013 increased by 50 percent. In addition, 33 percent of all guns sold in the last two years were recovered at a crime scene. Not to mention the fact that research shows an estimated 40 percent of gun sales take place between unlicensed parties such as gun shows or anonymous online transaction, allowing for certain groups to purchase a firearm without a background check.

At the end of the day, the firearm industry is booming in Washington with four times as many gun dealers than there are McDonald’s.
