Tobacco Business is Booming…Surprised?

0

With commercials highlighting the dangers of smoking including causing cancer, how tobacco companies target certain demographics, and the lack of advertising, you would assume that the tobacco industry is struggling. But what if I told you that business is booming – Would you believe me?

Since 2001 the number of cigarettes sold in the United States has declined and decreased by nearly 40%. Over the past five decades, tobacco regulations have become more strict, and major tobacco companies have lost millions of lawsuits. However, the industry has reported an increase of 32% totaling over $90 billion in 2016.

Prices

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the increase in revenue can be attributed to three main factors. The biggest factor is that cigarette prices have skyrocketed Americans spent more cigarettes than on beer and soda combined in 2016. The average price of cigarettes has increased from $3.73 in 2001 to $6.42 in 2016. In fact, a pack of Camels in New York City can cost over $14.

Competition

Another major factor is that there is less competition in the tobacco industry. While there have been seven major players competing in the tobacco industry, there are only two main manufacturers of cigarettes in the United States. Altria, which produces Marlboros and Reynolds American Inc., which sells Newport cigarettes, are the two largest manufacturers of cigarettes in the US. Together these two companies make nearly 80% of all cigarettes sold today.

Taxes

The biggest factor that helps the tobacco industry is taxes. While federal estate taxes are taxing on American tobacco companies, in comparison to other countries, US tobacco companies are getting off easy. For example, an average pack of cigarettes in Britain is $10.90. 82% of that goes towards taxes. Meanwhile, in the United States, where cigarettes cost less than four dollars, 42% of an average pack goes towards taxes.

Researchers Discover a Caterpillar that Can Eat Plastic

0

Cambridge University researchers have discovered that a caterpillar can eat plastic. Scientists conducted experiments and found a caterpillar that traditionally eats wax found in beehives can break down the chemical components of plastic.

Around the world, manufacturers produce 80 million tons of plastic each year. The plastic is used to make a variety of things including shopping bags, toys, and the packaging around food products. Currently, it takes hundreds of years for the plastic to decompose. However, larvae of a particular type of moth, wax moth Galleria mellonella, can make holes in a plastic bag in under an hour.

plastic eating caterpillar

Dr. Paolo Bombelli, a biochemist at Cambridge University and researcher in the study, explained that the Caterpillar would be the starting point. The next step will be to understand how this process operates. Ultimately, Dr. Bombelli hopes to provide a technical solution for decreasing the amount of plastic waste.

At this time, researchers believe microbes living within the Caterpillar as well as the insect itself may play a role in breaking down the plastic. If scientists can discover the chemical process, then it could lead to a solution to decreasing the amount of plastic waste on planet Earth.

Researchers are planning to create and find a viable way to get rid of plastic waste and work on a solution to save the environment.

Finding this caterpillar marks the first step to biodegrade plastic. Researchers published the study in the Journal of Current Biology.

Coachella Thief Caught by ‘Find My Phone’ Feature After Allegedly Stealing Over 100 Phones

Coachella is one of the most popular music festivals in the country. The concert is filled with surprises, musical performances, and A-list stars. One of the festival goers was allegedly going there for more than the music. On Friday, a New York man was arrested after allegedly stealing more than 100 cell phones from concert attendees making one of the craziest crimes ever committed at his music festival.

Unsurprisingly, Reinaldo De Jesus Henao, 36, was caught after several concertgoers activated their “Find My Phone” app on their lost smartphones. Ultimately, the signals led them directly to him. The ordeal took place over several days, and it made an effort by concert attendees and police officers.

According to reports, police officers discovered that a lot of cell phones began missing at the Sahara tent at Coachella. As a result, police started dedicating more their resources to watching over the tents, but ultimately it did not help. It was not until people started using the find my phone feature on their phones that they were able to find the culprits.

At an event, this massive is pretty reasonable to believe that a significant number of people will lose their phones during a party filled weekend. But those who lost their phones can breathe easier now knowing that their phone was found. More than 130 phones were collected from Henao’s backpack, and most of them have been returned to their owners.

Ultimately came down to a partnership between police officers and festivalgoers tracking down the alleged slippery concert going thief.

Netflix Misses Q1 Subscriber Numbers as the Company Plans to Move All Productions to LA

0

On Monday, Netflix announced their quarterly numbers for the first quarter 2017. Netflix reveals that they suffered from lackluster subscriber addition numbers.

Netflix reported earning $2.64 billion in the first quarter after the bell on Monday. The company also posted earnings of $0.40 per share, which is ahead of the previous estimate for the enterprise. However, it is important to note that the company missed their subscriber projections. The company added 1.42 million domestic customers. That number is approximately 800,000 less than their previous estimate. Moreover, Netflix’s numbers will also lower internationally with 3.3 million users signing up. In comparison to the 3.65 million users, they expected to receive.

Following the news shares of Netflix job as much as 3% in after-hours trading as investors reacted to the news that on Monday shares of Netflix close that $140.24 a share which is up 3%. Subscriber growth for the company has slowed down.

Netflix has been rapidly expanding as a global entertainment company. The decision to expand internationally came as the business in the United States slowed down.

This news comes after Netflix plans to move their filming location to Los Angeles. Currently, Netflix is spending $6 billion in TV and films. But the company reportedly explained that they are no one are going to chase the film tax credits and instead plan on moving all of their productions to California CEO explains. And in recent interview, Netflix is the reasoning behind the decision. “I personally believe instead of investing in tax incentives that we should invest in infrastructure,” Sarandos said. Sarandos added it “is very tough on families and eventually it grinds on the talent.”

“When you think about productions chasing tax credits all over the world, it puts the onus on the cast and crew who have to travel. You move to Los Angeles, or you grew up in L.A., because you wanted to be in show business — and then you have to move to New Orleans six or eight months a year,” Netflix’s CEO explained.

Study: Vermont is the Most Distracted Driving State in the Country

0

A new study from Zendrive, which is being called the largest distracted driving study ever conducted so far, found that 88% of-of all trips are made while using a mobile device in some way. Researchers examined over 3 million in anonymous drivers. Over the course of the study, researchers found that over the course of 570 million trips and covering 5.6 billion cumulative miles the amount of time a phone is used in an hour driving is approximately 3.5 minutes or 6% of the entire drive. As a result, scientists discovered that over the course of the study 280 million miles cumulatively were driven while distracted.

Previous research has found that distracted driving increases the chances of a collision of over 20 times. The data in the survey averaged out about 600 million trips during the study in which distracted driving took place at some point in time. Further analysis of the data found that on average, the survey group engaged in distracted driving roughly 105 times per hour per person.

Over the past two years, there has been an increase in traffic accident fatalities, according to Zendrive. However, the rise in a road accident deaths cannot all be attributed to smartphones. Of course, the implications of distracted driving a pretty clear. All over the world, people use their phones while driving to changes songs, modify the GPS donations, or visit social networks. Researchers analyzing the data found that all of these activities are extremely dangerous. However, Silicon Valley is working on alternatives by providing other types of apps that force applications to use Bluetooth and artificial intelligence assistants to keep drivers focus on the road and instead of looking at their cell phone.

Moreover, researchers found the most distracted state in the United States is Vermont followed by Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

Scientists Have Finally Discovered Shoelaces Untie

0

Researchers may have solved the mystery of loose shoelaces. Apparently, anything in life can unravel including your shoelaces. Scientists investigated why this occurs and now attributed to physics.

Researchers focused on the mysterious phenomenon that happens when a shoe is tied at one moment, and then at the next moment, the laces are untied – quite possibly causing for you to trip and fall or looking unprofessional during your interview.

Researchers conducted an experiment involving a human running on a treadmill and a mechanical leg designed to swing and stomp in the same way a person runs. Scientists discover that a shoelace does not untie in a matter of seconds and are caused by a complex set of forces. Science is then captured slow-motion video of a runner on a treadmill and found that every time his foot hit the ground at a force harder than gravity the fabric on the shoelace compresses and a piece of the lease begins to loosen. Also, a swinging leg also causes the friction between the not to decrease and as a result loosening the ends.

A professor of mechanical engineering at the University of California Berkeley and lead author of the study, Oliver O’Reilly, explained: “It’s unpredictable, but when it happens, it’s in two or three strides, and it’s catastrophic. There’s no way of coming back from it.”

Researchers found that stopping the foot gradually loosens the not while other forces cause the not to untie. As a result of the tension on the knot decreases and the knot slowly starts to slide causing a chaotic effect where this not suddenly unravels.

Researchers also discovered that the granny not that many people used to tie their shoelaces also comes unraveled faster than alternative knots.

So what would cause the scientists to look into why shoelaces become untied? O’Reilly explained that he was inspired to investigate what occurs after spending decades wondering why leases spontaneously unknot themselves. Essentially, becoming an intellectual problem or puzzle that only intensified when he had to teach his daughters how to tie a shoe.

“The interesting thing about this mechanism is that your laces can be fine for a really long time, and it’s not until you get one little bit of motion to cause loosening that starts this avalanche effect leading to knot failure,” said Christine Gregg, a co-author of the study, explained.

Target Recalls Easter Egg Toys After Ingestion Hazard

0

Easter is right around the corner. One of the hallmarks outside of Christianity is a traditional Easter egg. It is so famous even President Trump is hosting an event with over 20,000 individuals attending, and the White House plans to give thousands of commemorative Easter eggs during the Easter egg at the White House.

However, Target has issued a massive recall for their water absorbing Easter egg toys after discovering the objects can expand inside a child’s body, which can cause life-threatening complications if ingested. The products were sold at Target from February through March, according to reports.

Over 500,000 of the Easter egg toys were sold under several different product names including Hatch & Grow Easter Eggs, Easter Grow Toys and Hatch Your Own Dino.

So far, no injuries have been reported, but the Consumer Product and Safety Commission has issued a warning to parents of the toys may not show up on x-rays however the toys can cause intestinal problems such as discomfort, vomiting, dehydration, and intestinal obstructions.

The agency is calling for parents to take the purchased toys away from the children and return them to a Target store for a full refund.

A toy recall is not the first time a massive recall has been done this year. Last February there was a huge smokeless tobacco recall after reports of sharp metal objects were found in select cans. A few weeks before that, IKEA recalled one of the most famous beach chairs after several allegations of fingertip amputations. Moreover, the day before the IKEA recalls the FDA issued a warning that a toxic chemical was found in homeopathic teething products.

Elon Musk: Tesla Semi-Trucks Coming Soon

0

Elon Musk announced on Thursday that his company Tesla Inc. plans to unveil an electric semi truck this September.

The CEO of Tesla took to Twitter to make the announcement but, Musk did not elaborate on the project.

“Tesla Semi truck unveil set for September,” Musk said on Twitter. “Team has done an amazing job. Seriously next level.”

Adding a semi truck to the production schedule for Tesla is an ambitious project. The company is currently designing, developing, and manufacturing the highly anticipated model three midmarket sedan, which will be the companies cheapest and most affordable automobile yet.

However, Musk’s decision to begin building and manufacturing autonomous driving trucks should not come as a surprise. The CEO previously announced that the company had indicated a semi truck was coming shortly. Last July, Musk said heavy-duty trucks were among the type of electric vehicles needed in the marketplace and that Tesla is expected to unveil their line of trucks later on this year.

“We believe the Tesla Semi will deliver a substantial reduction in the cost of cargo transport while increasing safety and making it really fun to operate,” he said in the company’s “master plan.”

The move toward self-driving trucks is an inevitable outcome of technology and self-driving cars. Two years ago, the American Trucking Associations a cut conducted a study and found a shortage of professional truck drivers in the trucking industry. As a result, the Association suggested an increase in pay for truck drivers and by 2016 truck drivers received the largest pay raise out of any other industry of nearly 8%. Self-driving trucks will all will be able to provide more truck drivers and perhaps autonomous vehicles, which could end up taking jobs or decreasing the cost of delivery.

What is important to note is Elon Musk is not alone in his venture to deliver self-driving trucks. Google’s Waymo, which announced automated self-driving Chrysler Pacifica minivans last year, is also planning on developing self-driving semi-trucks and other ride-sharing services.

Tesla stock rose approximately 2.4% in afternoon trading.

Instagram Stories Reaches 200 Million Users

The ability for Instagram to grow to 200 million users illustrates how the company has been able to add over 15 million users every quarter. Moreover, Instagram’s new feature is now being used by approximately half of Instagram’s 400 million daily active users.

But Instagram is not stopping at beating Snapchat in the number of daily active users; the company has also implemented new changes that impacted both stories and Instagram direct messaging, which were both reported earlier this week.

Also, to celebrate the 200 million users of Instagram’s new stories feature, the company has announced that users can now pin text, emoji, and stickers to specific spots or even objects in their videos – a feature that is currently available on Snapchat.

Moreover, this new feature allows for people to use their stickers by clicking a smiley face icon to take a photo of an object they can stick into a photo or video. Instagram calls these new features selfie stickers because the ideas that people are taking pictures of themselves and in turn those into stickers. Again, another feature that is currently available from Snapchat.

Not to mention, Instagram has announced new geostickers are customizable to the city where a person is located. For example, after releasing geostickers to in New York and Indonesia last month, Instagram is looking for users to share their locations in Chicago, London, Madrid, and Tokyo and adding geostickers to their posts and videos.

Trans Fat Ban Lead to Fewer Heart Attacks, Study Finds

0

According to a new study, the trans-fat ban is linked to fewer heart attacks and strokes.

After New York banned trans fat in restaurants, the rates of heart attacks and stroke have dropped in the state. Researchers discovered that only three years after the prohibition and restriction of trans fat in restaurants was introduced to New York counties that banned trans fats experienced a 6.2% reduction in hospital admissions for heart attacks and strokes. Meanwhile, in comparison to New York counties that did not have the same restrictions.

As a result, the trans fat ban led to a 43 fewer heart attacks and strokes per 100,000 adults ages 25 and older in New York counties where trans fat was banned. The study was published today in the Journal JAMA Cardiology.

While the results of the survey were very encouraging, scientists were not that’s us prized as researchers early estimates predicted a 6.2% decline in cardiovascular deaths. Moreover, a 2009 study predicted that nearly eliminating trans fat from someone’s diet could prevent between 6 to 19% of heart disease related events.

The FDA is currently planning a national restriction against trans fats starting 2018. The FDA restrictions on transfer that will ban manufacturers and food preparers from using oils that contain unhealthy fats within the food. As a result, these new restrictions would nearly eliminate trans fat from foods, restaurants, and grocery stores throughout the country.

Restaurants and food companies have been gradually making steps towards eliminating trans fats from their foods and products in preparation for the upcoming 2018 FDA ban. That said, trans fats are found in a variety of foods including baked goods, fried foods, bread and other food products, according to the researchers in the study.

This news comes after a study found obese parents are less a child development issues. Currently, two out of three Americans are clinically obese, and researchers found overweight fathers and mothers leads to not only motor skills problems but also social issues.
