Study: Kids are Closer to Dogs Than Their Brothers and Sisters

0

While some toys are reportedly spying on children, a new study from the University of Cambridge suggests kids have closer relationships with their pets than their siblings.

Psychology researchers have published a study arguing that children are more attached to pets than to their brothers and sisters.

The Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology published the study this week. Scientists studied a group of 12-year-olds from 77 different families. All of the children involved in the survey had at least one sibling and one pet. The results of the research found children had stronger relationships with their pet than their siblings. In fact, University of Cambridge researchers found children had a better connection with their pet dogs than cats and any other animals. Also, researchers discovered boys and girls have different relationships with their pets. Scientists found girls disclose more with their pets than males.

In a statement, the study’s lead author, Matt Cassells, explained that “Anyone who has loved a childhood pet knows that we turn to them for companionship and disclosure, just like relationships between people.”

“We wanted to know how strong these relationships are with pets relative to other close family ties,” Cassells added.

Cassells argues that kids have a closer bond with pets than they do with their brothers or sisters even though pets do not talk back. “Even though pets may not fully understand or respond verbally, the level of disclosure to pets was no less than to siblings,” Cassells remarked. “The fact that pets cannot understand or talk back may even be a benefit as it means they are completely non-judgmental.”

The WALTHAM Center for Pet Nutrition and the Economic and Social Research Council collaborated with the University of Cambridge to complete the study. Dr. Nancy Gee, the Human-Animal Interaction Research Manager at WALTHAM, said, “The social support that adolescents receive from pets may well support psychological well-being later in life, but there is still more to learn about the long-term impact of pets on ‘s development.”

This news comes after researchers found dogs enjoy listening to soft rock and reggae as the music helps canines relax.

Uber Drives Partnership with Daimler for Self-Driving Cars

0

Uber and Daimler announced a new partnership on Tuesday that will allow the car company to introduce their line of self-driving cars for Uber. In a blog post, Uber’s CEO explains that Daimler will operate their self-driving cars on Uber’s ride-sharing network.

“We are incredibly excited by the potential for self-driving cars to further our mission of bringing reliable transportation to everyone, everywhere,” Travis Kalanick explained. “They will also help to reduce traffic accidents, which today kill many people a year; free up the huge amount of space currently used to park the world’s billion-plus cars; and cut congestion, which is choking our cities.”

Kalanick explained that he at one point envisioned manufacturing cars for the Uber company. But, after visiting a car manufacturing plant, he realized that it was “really hard”. So instead of building cars, Uber decided to partner with auto manufacturers. “We can combine Uber’s global ridesharing network with the world-class vehicles of companies like Daimler so that Uber riders can have a great experience getting around their cities.”

This news comes after #DeleteUber went viral over the weekend following the company’s response to Trump’s immigration ban. On Saturday, the New York Taxi Workers Alliance refused to pick up passengers at New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport for one hour. The alliance called for other taxi drivers to protest the immigration ban. But, Uber’s Twitter account posted a tweet saying, ““Surge pricing has been turned off at Airport. This may result in longer wait times. Please be patient.” Many protesters believed as a sign the company was attempting to profit off of the taxi strike. However, Uber later stated that they were sorry for the confusion and it was not meant to break up any strikes.

Meanwhile, to profit off of the #DeleteUber social media movement against Uber, the ride-sharing company competitor, Lyft, donated a million dollars to the American Civil Liberties Union.

“In today’s world of e-commerce, two-day free shipping is table stakes. It no longer makes sense to charge for it,” added Lore.

Earlier this month, Walmart announced a plan to hire 34,000 jobs and improve training for their current employees. In fact, the company revealed their plans on investing $7 billion into the company, which will pay for construction, remodeling of stores as well as distribution centers.

Alleged Robber Used Kim Kardashian’s Social Media to Plan the Paris Robbery

0

Last October, Kim Kardashian West was robbed at gunpoint. This week, French newspaper Le Monde reports the alleged leader in the Kardashian robbery received all the information he needed to steal from the reality star by searching through her social media posts.

Aomar Ait Khedache, 60, was told reporters that he was able to value her jewelry and plan out all the details of her Paris trip through her social media postings.

In a police report obtained by the Le Monde Khedache reveals, “The jewels were shown on the Internet, and [she said] that she didn’t wear fakes . . . the time she would arrive in France, you just had to look at the Internet, and you knew everything, absolutely everything.”

Following the robbery, most of Kim Kardashian’s lost jewelry in the robbery was melted down and sold. However, Kim Kardashian’s ring is still in someone’s possession because the robbers are “all afraid to sell it because it is a stone that is very easy to spot.”

In late October 2016, Kim Kardashian traveled to Paris for Fashion week. She was held at gunpoint and robbed inside of a hotel. The robbers were able to gain access by threatening the concierge. Once inside, the thieves duct taped her wrists, legs, and mouth and put a gun to her head, while they stole her jewelry. Following the robbery, Kim Kardashian’s hit TV show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians was placed on hold. However, twenty days later, production of the show started again.

More and more thieves are using social media to track and find their next potential victims. A 2011 report by Credit Sesame found 4 out of 5 robbers check Facebook, Google street view and Twitter to see if potential victims or what they are doing. Earlier this month, the Chicago Tribune reported three young men robbed people who arranged to meet through social media.

MLB Punishes St. Louis Cardinals Following Houston Astros Hack

0

Nearly two years ago, news broke that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department were investigating the St. Louis Cardinals for hacking the Houston Astros. Former St. Louis scouting director Chris Correa was later sentenced to over three years in prison and fined over $200,000 for hacking the Houston Astro’s internal database.

On Monday, the MLB announced they have finished their internal investigation into Houston Astros hack and hit the St. Louis Cardinals with a list of penalties. These sanctions include $2 million fines paid to the Houston Astros within the next 30 days. The Cardinals will also lose two draft picks, which will be awarded to the Astros. Furthermore, the MLB banned Correa from baseball.

“It took a lot of time and a lot of energy from our staff and we burned up a lot of resources trying to deal with it over the years, but I’m glad it’s over,” said Astros owner Jim Crane. “We think what the Commissioner did with the picks and the cash is a fair assessment of really what happened.”

The hacking scandal all started on June 16, 2015, when the FBI and Justice Department launched an investigation into the Cardinals for hacking the Houston Astros. Later, the investigation revealed that the Chris Correa committed the hack. An inquiry showed Correa gained access to Astros’ medical records, player rankings and an Astros executive’s email account for several years. Correa was fired from the Cardinals.

“We respect the Commissioner’s decision and appreciate that there is now a final resolution to this matter,” Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt Jr. said in a statement. “Commissioner Manfred’s findings are fully consistent with our own investigation’s conclusion that this activity was isolated to a single individual.”

The MLB says they interviewed witnesses and investigated thousands of documents. The probe found that Correa accessed Astros’ information several times in 2013 to 2014. Also, Correa was able to obtain private Astros’ data days before the MLB draft and trade deadlines.

Hacking is not new. Just yesterday, Ourmine hackers hacked CNN’s Facebook page. A report by Mashable found CNN’s social media accounts posted a message to their followers saying, “Hey, it’s OurMine we are just testing your security, please contact us for more information.” CNN was able to address the issue in less than an hour.

Fitbit to Cut Over 100 Jobs Following Disappointing Holiday Sales

0

Last November, a study was released suggesting Fitbit devices do not improve weight loss. Now, the company announces they will be cutting 6% of their global workforce, after a disappointing fourth quarter.

According to a press release, the company announced the layoff of 110 jobs, as part of a reorganization of their business to create a more “efficient operating model.”

The CEO of Fitbit, James Park, addressed the fourth quarter financials calling them “temporary”.

“Looking forward, we believe Fitbit is in a unique position to stimulate new areas of demand by leveraging the data we collect to deliver a more personalized experience while developing upgraded versions of existing products and launching additional products to expand into new categories,” said James Park, Fitbit co-founder, and CEO.

But, Fitbit and the company’s CEO remain optimistic. Park added, “As the overall wearable category leader, we exited the year with an engaged community of over 23.2 million active users, making us uniquely positioned to be the partner of choice for the healthcare ecosystem, which is a key component of our long-term strategy.”

The company plans on cutting operating expenses by $200 million. Also, the reorganization of the company will save the company $4 million in the next few months.

“We believe we are uniquely positioned to succeed in delivering what consumers are looking for in a smartwatch: stylish, well-designed devices that combine the right general purpose functionality with a focus on health and fitness. With the recent acquisition of assets from Pebble, Vector Watch and Coin, we are taking action to position the company for long-term success.”

However, Fitbit will be facing new competition as Google announced the release of new wearable Android devices earlier this year. Google will release “flagship smartwatches” featuring the latest Android operating system, according to The VergeThe new watches will be able to support several of Google’s major applications including Android Pay and Google Assistant.

But, Fitbit investors are not that optimistic about the future of the company as stocks are trading downward 0.96 points and nearly 14% by afternoon trading.

Starbucks customers are taking to Twitter and calling for a boycott of the coffee chain after the company’s CEO criticized President Donald Trump’s immigration executive order and announced a plan to hire 10,000 refugees.

On Sunday, Starbucks declared a project to hire 10,000 refugees over the course of the next five years.

“We are living in an unprecedented time, one in which we are witness to the conscience of our country, and the promise of the American Dream, being called into question,” CEO Howard Schultz explained.

While some Starbucks customers celebrated Schultz’s response to Donald Trump’s executive order, some customers were less than impressed by the company’s decision.

No one wants your overpriced crap anymore except for Bohemian Douchebag Millenials trying to look cool. ,” one Twitter user argued.

Another Twitter user asserted, “Instead of hiring 10,000 AMERICAN VETERANS, has decided to hire 10,000 ‘refugees’. Calling on all Americans to !”

Many other CEOs have spoken out about Donald Trump’s immigration executive order. Facebook, Tesla, Uber, Airbnb, and Lyft all commented on the Trump’s new immigration policy. In fact, Airbnb explains they will be providing free housing to refugees, Uber plans on compensating drivers, and Lyft is donating $1,000,000 to those affected by Trump’s immigration ban.

Last Friday, Donald Trump signed an executive order that banned Syrian refugees from entering the United States. The new immigration policy would not allow residents from “terror-prone” countries from entering the country. These countries inTrclude Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen, and Somalia.

On Monday morning, Donald Trump defended the immigration ban on Twitter. “If the ban were announced with a one week notice, the “bad” would rush into our country during that week. A lot of bad “dudes” out there!”

The feature will use artificial intelligence to process orders through the Starbucks app. Customers can talk to the virtual assistant in a chat display. Also, the virtual assistant can confirm the details of the order from the app. The beta version of the My Starbucks barista will become available to 1,000 customers with a plan to release nationwide by the summer of 2017.
