Anti-War Student Protests Erupt at University of Michigan’s Graduation

Student calls to end the war in Gaza have intensified at the University of Michigan’s graduation ceremony this weekend, marking a visible collision between the traditional graduation celebration and political activism.

A Visible Display of Solidarity

During the commencement ceremony at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, around 75 student protesters, many wearing traditional Arabic keffiyehs paired with their graduation caps, marched through the crowd. They held signs bearing messages such as “No universities left in Gaza” and chanted, “We demand you to divest, as funding continues the unrest.”

Overhead, planes flew banners with opposing views. One said, “Divest from Israel now! Free Palestine!” while another read, “We stand with Israel. Jewish lives matter.”

Despite the protest, no arrests were made, and the event continued as planned, attracting tens of thousands of attendees. Some of them responded to the protest by waving Israeli flags.

University’s Response to the Protests

State police halted the demonstrators before they could reach the graduation stage. While university spokesperson Colleen Mastony disclosed that public safety personnel had guided the protesters to the rear end of the stadium. “Peaceful protests like this have taken place at U-M commencement ceremonies for decades,” she noted.

Secretary of the U.S. Navy, Carlos Del Toro, paused his speech a few times due to the protests and reminded attendees to focus on the podium. Before administering an oath to the armed forces graduates, Del Toro emphasized their role, saying they would be “protecting the freedoms that we so cherish,” including the right to peaceful protest.

Protests at Other Universities

The University of Michigan was not alone. Indiana University, Ohio State University, and Northeastern University in Boston also braced for similar protests. More protests are anticipated in the coming weeks at universities across New York, including Columbia University, NYU, and CCNY. Columbia University has even requested the NYPD maintain a presence on campus until after its planned May 15 graduation.

A Nationwide Student Movement

Encampments of protesters requesting universities to cease business with Israel or companies reported to support the war in Gaza have multiplied across campuses. This student movement has led some schools to reach agreements with the protesters to end demonstrations and alleviate disruptions to final exams and graduations.

Nevertheless, many encampments have been broken down in police enforcement, and several arrests have been made. The Associated Press has documented at least 61 incidents since April 18, with over 2,400 people arrested on 47 college and university campuses.

 

Hunger Strikes and Other Acts of Protest

Princeton University in New Jersey became the latest to see students resorting to hunger strikes. Senior David Chmielewski said the hunger strike would continue until university administrators meet with students about their demands.

Simultaneously, other demonstrators are participating in “solidarity fasts” lasting 24 hours to support the cause. Brown and Yale universities had similar hunger strikes earlier this year.

 

Different Ends to Protests at Various Universities

Elsewhere, the University of Virginia saw the police break up a demonstration deemed an “unlawful assembly”. However, at Tufts University near Boston, students peacefully dismantled their protest encampment without any law enforcement involvement. Although university officials were pleased, protest organizers expressed their disappointment with failed negotiations.

These student protests originate from the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Israel’s ensuing offensive in Gaza has killed thousands, mainly civilians, and displaced most of Gaza’s inhabitants, raising international concern and sparking these student-led protests.

The New York Mets’ Adrian Houser is set to transition from the starting lineup to the bullpen next week, following a challenging performance this season. Houser acknowledges the change as not so much a downgrade, but a strategic forward move.

 

Adapting a New Role

A right-handed pitcher, Houser has been increasingly self-aware of his struggles in recent times. In an announcement made at Tropicana Field last Saturday, Houser, albeit disappointed, showed understanding towards the decision. He indicated he remains undeterred by the shift, asserting that the job still needs to be done regardless.

The pitcher showed earnest ownership for his downturn stating, “I have no one to blame but myself for not getting the job done”. Further, indicating willingness to adjust, he said, “But there is still a job to be done, so I need to prepare every day and be ready to go”.

 

Lap of Struggles

Houser has appeared six times this season with an unfortunate 0-3 record and an 8.16 ERA, a career low for Houser. A noticeable lack of command has resulted in 20 walks in 28, 2/3 innings (6.3 per nine innings). Of special concern is hitters launching the ball airwards, causing alarm considering Houser’s history with grounders, having a 51.9% career ground-ball rate.

 

Emphasizing Sinker Command

The Mets are yet to pinpoint a particular problem with Houser, but most fingers point to the control over his sinker. Known as his go-to pitch, the sinker has drawn the most grounders. A bullpen session last Saturday at the Trop, however, brought in some positivity for Houser. “It was really good and it felt a lot better,” he said, looking forward to his first relief appearance scheduled for Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

 

Working on Mechanics and Consistency

As part of the overhaul, Houser is reportedly working closely with Mets’ pitching coach Jeremy Hefner. Using a robust mixture of video analysis and advanced analytics, the attempts are to streamline his mechanics and perfect a consistent arm slot and motion.

Having previously pitched out of the Milwaukee Brewers’ bullpen, Houser lacks no experience in high-pressure scenarios. He seems hopeful about his new trajectory, “We’re doing a little bit of everything,” he said, revealing that his priorities include staying with the routine and analyzing video footage to work on corrections.

 

Bouncing Back after Setbacks

Houser recorded a 4.12 ERA in 21 starts last year, making him a reliable innings eater. His current repertoire, however, is not doing enough to fool the high-prepared hitters who seem to be reading him well. The Mets are keen to see Houser attacking hitters again, with aggressive control on the zone.

Despite these setbacks, Houser is medically fit to play, adding to his drive to improve his in-zone performance. “It starts with fastball command,” said manager Carlos Mendoza, showing faith in Houser’s recovery, “Him and Hef are working on some mechanics that he needs to make adjustments to, but he’ll be fine.”

Mets’ Roster Changes

In parallel developments, the Mets have sent right-hander Dedniel Nuñez and left-hander Danny Young to Triple-A Syracuse, following consecutive gameplay. These spots have been filled by Christian Scott, Saturday’s starter, and right-handed reliever Cole Sulser. Despite having only left-hander Jake Diekman in the bullpen, the Mets are still optimistic with their right-handed lineup that seems to provide a balance.

In conclusion, it is clear Houser’s performance trajectory hasn’t met expectations. But rather than sideline him indefinitely, the Mets are keen to utilize his potential in a different capacity. The focus now is on dialing back to the basics, working on his mechanics and regaining his groove.
