Russia Election Investigation Sets Their Eyes on Twitter

0

Senate Intelligence Committee investigators are planning to ask Twitter representatives today whether misinformation spread by Russian accounts were made into real news stores and were targeting Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton, and whether or not the social network took steps to stop the spread of false news.

According to Politico, Hillary Clinton and her campaign battled a wave of Twitter attacks during the 2016 election and it is believed it was orchestrated by Russian bots.

Initially, Facebook was the first target for congressional investigation, given the social network’s massive reach. Now Twitter has become a focal point of the INtelligence Committee because of the networks’ influence in amplifying news and distributing content, Politico reports.

On Thursday, a closed-door briefing in the Senate will be the next move by federal investigators to investigate the social network’s impact on the 2016 Presidential election.

But Twitter is not alone. Senate investigators are reportedly inviting Google, Twitter, and Facebook to testify publicly on November 1st about attempts by Russian government officials to influence the presidential race.

Politico reported that the Russian use of Twitter is “consistent” with what American intelligence groups found in their investigation of the election, which found Russia had interfered with the presidential election.

It is important to understand how bots could have spread misinformation on the social network. Researchers at the University of Southern California’s Information Sciences Institute discovered that an estimated 400,000 bots were being used during the election, which represented nearly 1 out of 5 of all election-related tweets.

In fact, as we reported earlier this year, researchers were able to discover 350,000 twitter bots. Researchers from the Department of Computer Sceience, at the University Colelge London, found a secret bot network with over 350,000 Twiter bots. The study reported the creator of the bots had the ability to control thousands of bots.

“Here we report our discovery of the Star Wars botnet with more than 350k bots. We show these bots were generated and centrally controlled by a botmaster,” Juan Echeverria and Shi Zhou, the lead researchers in the study explained.

Researchers went on to explain that a massive network of Twitter bots have the ability to “spam, manipulate public opinion” and even alter research data uses Twitter’s API. In fact, one of the biggest problems with using Twitter as a data source is the fact it can be easily skewed by bots, Echeverria and Zhou reported in their study.

‘This is Us’ Season 2 Breaks Ratings Record

0

This is Us Season 2 premiered this week and set a new high for the TV series in the key demographic, according to a new report by Nielsen overnight rating report.

The second season premiere of the hit NBC drama had a 3.8 rating in adults 18 to 49 years old and 12.6 million viewers, airing at 9 p.m. That is an increase of 36 percent in the key demographic in comparison to the Season 1 premiere and the Season 1 finale. It was also the second most-watched episode of the series trailing behind the Season 1 finale, which has 12.8 million viewers.

This news comes after This Is Us held a talent search for actors to audition for a role in the new season of the show. According to Project Casting, Telsey and Company held a nationwide talent search looking for actors to appear on the show for a major recurring role. The casting call reportedly was looking for a teen African American actress to play the following role:

“Lisa – Female, 10 – 14, African American, very open to a variety of types (ex. overweight).  Hardened and wise beyond the capacity of most adults, Lisa is a bright, tough, introverted foster kid. She is a Newark, New Jersey native who has spent most of her young life in the inner city, bouncing around several foster homes. Deep down she is a sensitive soul, yearning for lasting human connections she can believe in. However, years in the system have left her with serious trust issues and emotional trauma from neglect.”

While the character has not appeared on the show yet, it is arguable that “Lisa” may make her debut sometime this season.

Terminator is Back!

It is official; the Terminator franchise is back. The sixth movie in the Terminator franchise is set to hit theaters on July 26, 2019.

Paramount Pictures made the announcement earlier this week with Linda Hamilton returning as Sarah Conor and Arnold Schwarzenegger on board to reprise his role of a killing machine.

The reboot will be the first time that Hamilton, Schwarzenegger and James Cameron will be working on the movie franchise since 1991 with the hit movie, Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Deadpool director, Tim Miller, will direct the film. The untitled feature film will be based on a story by James Cameron and Tim MIller from a script developed by David Goyer and Josh Friedman of what is expected to launch a new trilogy.

Details surrounding the movie have not been released, while Cameron has said that the upcoming feature film will be a direct sequel to the 1991 movie, Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Hamilton starred in the first two movies, which was first released over 30 years ago. Hamilton played Connor, a waitress who is hunted down by a killer cyborg that is sent from the future to kill her to prevent her from giving birth to the savior of the human race.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was the latest sequel, which was released in 2003, followed by Terminator Salvation in 2009 and Terminator Genisys in 2015.

Study: Blacks, Hispanics Saw Highest Wealth Gains, Since 2013

0

African Americans, Hispanics and individuals without a college degree saw the largest gains in wealth since 2013, the Federal Reserve revealed on Wednesday. That said, the improvements did little to eliminate the inequality gap.

The share of America’s income held by the top 1% of households reached 24% in 2016, which is a record high, and the median net worth of white American households is currently $171,000, nearly 10 times higher than for black households.

Black families went from earning $13,600 in net worth in 2013 to $17,600 in 2016, which is a gain of 30%. Hispanic households went from $14,200 to $20,700, which is a 46% increase. It is important to highlight net worth includes all the assets a family owns including homes, vehicles, savings accounts, retirement funds, and stock funds. Ultimately, non-white employees were able to find jobs, save money, and pay off their debt. Many states who raised the minimum wage in recent years also gave a boost to low-skilled workers in fast-food and retail jobs.

Despite the larger percentage gains, the median net worth is still below $21,000. Among the factors that contribute to disparities in net worth include homeownership rates, retirement savings, and student debt. More than 70% of white households own their homes, while less than 50% of black and Hispanic families do not. 60% of white families report having a retirement savings account, which is 200% of black and Hispanic families. Not to mention, White families are twice as likely to own a business.

Black families are mostly affected by student loans, with 31% of black households report having student loan debt, in comparison to 20% of Hispanics and whites.

Moreover, the Federal Reserve Report suggest a robust economy has benefited all economic groups. But, the wealthiest and most educated were in a position to gain the most because they have an advantage over the poor and uneducated.

Overall, the gains of the past three years show a dramatic change from the 2010 and 2013, when wealth fell for all minority groups except for whites.

Could the Russian Election Investigation Go After Reddit?

0

Facebook is currently under pressure from the U.S. government to provide detailed information surrounding the investigation into Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election. But it is not the only social networking company that could have played a role in the promotion of propaganda during the U.S. election. According to reports, Twitter recently met with the Senate Intelligence Committee to discuss Russian activity on their social networking platform. Now, the hugely popular link-sharing website Reddit may go under investigation, says a representative of Sen. Mark Warner, the committee’s ranking Democrat.

Reddit is arguably one of the world’s most popular websites for the propagation of memes. It is also a site where many stories go viral. The forum is favored among young users for the ability for a user to go anonymous, holding Ask Me Anything – an open interview forum where users can openly talk with Presidents, CEOs, and entertainers.

But, Representative Warner is interested in the website’s shadier side, according to The Hill. Following the election, Reddit has attempted to make changes. For example, earlier this year the company’s CEO Steve Huffman admitted to altering comments made by users. He said he edited comments that were posted by users because a significant number of them were abusive, arguing he was a pedophile and mentioned him by name.

“I am sorry for compromising the trust you all have in Reddit,” Huffman said in a post on Wednesday. “It is heartbreaking to think that my actions distracted people from their family over the holiday; instigated harassment of our moderators; and may have harmed Reddit itself, which I love more than just about anything.”

Then, over the summer, President Trump retweeted a video of him body-slamming a CNN effigy that originally appeared on Reddit. Another video parody Trump shared on Twitter of the President hitting a golf ball and striking Hillary Clinton also originated from Reddit.

According to The Hill, Mark Warner is interested in seeing if Russia used Reddit for its ability to make stories go viral. Analysts argue that several false news stories originated on Reddit. For instance, as The New York Times points out, four hours after someone posted on Twitter about anti-Trump protesters being shuttled into Austin, the tweeted was posted to Reddit, where it link was rapidly “upvoted” by users. Several hours later, the story was shared on Facebook where over 300,000 users shared it. However, the busses were, in fact, part of a corporate conference and not protesters.

At this point it is unclear whether or not fake accounts or bots played a role in the rise of Reddit posts during the election campaign. But, it is important to understand the power of Reddit, which is the fourth most popular website in the United States, according to Alexa.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Cast Take A Knee During 300th Episode Party

0

The cast of Grey’s Anatomy and Shonda Rhimes are joining the viral #TakeAKnee campaign. On Tuesday, the cast showed their support for the NFL as players and team executives protest racial injustice across the United States.

Shonda Rhimes, the producer, and screenwriter behind Grey’s Anatomy shared a photo of herself, Ellen Pompeo, Debbie Allen and Jesse Williams kneeling with their hands over their chest.

“And we took a knee in solidarity of racial injustice,” she captioned the snap, which was taken at the on during 300th episode party.

Pompeo shared her photo with the caption, “We kneel because we are supposed to be one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Jesse Williams, who has been extremely vocal about racial injustices in America, also posted his photo with the caption, “Wherever I go, I’m me. This life, is a ‘we’ thing.”

The cast of Grey’s Anatomy are not the only stars showing their support for the NFL players after President Trump called any player who kneels a “son of a bitch.” The cast of X-Files, Pharrell Williams, and Stevie Wonder have taken knees in support of the cause.

…and we took a knee in solidarity of racial justice. #takeaknee #greysanatomy #300th

Congress Could Regulate Facebook – Here’s How

0

Last week in a letter Sen. Mark Warner and Amy Klobuchar urged their constituents to support a bill that will regulate campaign ads running on social networks like Facebook. A draft of the bill may hit Congress as early as Tuesday, according to Gizmodo.

Gizmodo reports the bill was originally proposed to track “electioneering communication” purchased by anyone spending at least $10,000 on online advertisements. Now, that amount is no longer seen as an effective threshold. The decision to get rid of the $10,000 minimum came to the realization that none of the ad paid for by foreigners during the 2016 election cycle would have been covered by the new piece of legislation. It is not known what the new threshold will be.

This news comes after Facebook revealed last week that at least $150,000 worth of political ads purchased had been bought during the 2016 campaign by accounts with Russian ties. About $100,000 was spent by 470 accounts linked to a Russian St. Petersburg. Then an another 2,000 advertisements, or $50,000 worth of ads, were purchased by Russian language accounts using internet addresses in the United States. The House and Senate intelligence committees are preparing to review the ads over the next week.

The Washington Post reports Facebook ads paid for by Russians as part of a cover influence campaign appear aimed at creating divisions among American voters by exploiting racial and religious topics. Some of the ads, for instance, “highlighted support for Democrat Hillary Clinton among Muslim women.”

Facebook had argued in 2011 against regulations requiring political advisors to disclose who paid for online ads. Citing a Federal Federal Election Commission rule addressing the impracticality of attaching disclosers to such items such as bumper stickers, Facebook that many of its ads were  “too small” to contain meaningful disclosure.

Last September, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company intended to overhaul how it manages election ads, including by placing requirements on political advertisers to disclosure which audiences they target with wich ads. This is, of course, a part of the company’s changing belief on their influence on elections. After the election, Zuckerberg laughed at the notion that propaganda on the platform had any impact on the election.

Warner and Klobuchar’s bill may have very little of a chance of becoming law as the Republicans have shown little interest in investigating the propaganda that led to the 2016 victory. Without meaningful action by the government, the responsibility of policing propaganda will fall in the laps of Facebook, which should give people some hesitation.

Report: Showtime Websites Secretly Mined for Crypto Currencies

0

Over the weekend, Showtime websites were reportedly found to be running a script that allows the websites to mine visitors’ extra CPU power for the cryptocurrency.

Users on Twitter pointed out that the afflicted sites including showtime.com and showtimeanytime.com were mining for the cryptocurrency, but the script has since been removed according to reports from Gizmodo.

The crypto mining Javascript program is known as Coinhive. That said, some ad-blockers have now included Coinhive on the list.

Script mines the cryptocurrency known as Monero. The program was launched three years ago and was made as an alternative to banner ads as a way for website owners to gain revenue and avoid ad blocking.  30% of the earnings go to Coinhive, while sites using the service, keep the rest of the revenue.

Coinhive has updated their site to say the following:

“We’re a bit saddened to see that some of our customers integrate Coinhive into their pages without disclosing to their users what’s going on, let alone asking for their permission.”

Twitter Doubles Tweet Limits to 280 Characters

0

The tweets in your timeline are going to get a bit longer. Twitter announced on today that the company has started testing 280-character tweets, increasing the previous character limit, to help users share their thoughts and ideas.

Our research shows us that the character limit is a major cause of frustration for people tweeting in English,” the company said in a blog post. “When people don’t have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people Tweeting — which is awesome!”

Currently, only 9% of all tweets today are exactly 140 characters, Twitter explains in a statement. It is reasonable to believe that many users limit their number of characters not to exceed that 140 character limit. Now Twitter hopes to increase the amount of content on their platform by increasing the character limit in what the company explains is “languages impacted by cramming,” which includes every language except for Japanese, Chinese, and Korean.

The idea for excluding those words is the belief that users can fit more thoughts into fewer characters based on their written languages. For example, the average length of a tweet in Japanese is only 15 characters.

The 140 character limit was first set in place to reflect the length of an SMS message, which was how tweets were first distributed before the mobile app. Twitter reserved the 20 characters for the username and 140 characters for the messages.

Twitter has talked about expanding the tweet length for several years. In fact, by 2015, the company was moving closer toward introducing tweets of up to 10,000 characters, according to sources close to The Verge. It was being developed to create a new ranked timeline, which was being set up instead of a chronological timeline feed to show the users the best tweets first.

That said, the move to larger characters sets is still controversial. Twitter’s identity has been linked to short messages. 10,000 character limits in Facebook, would only confuse the issue. Also, in 2016 Twitter announced an optional ranked time like that showed “the best tweets first,” followed by standard chronological order.

Overall, this is a radical step and will change the way users use the platform. How it will it affect the platform, we will have to see.

“We understand since many of you have been Tweeting for years, there may be an emotional attachment to 140 characters — we felt it, too,” the company said in its blog post. “But we tried this, saw the power of what it will do, and fell in love with this new, still brief, constraint. We are excited to share this today, and we will keep you posted about what we see and what comes next.”

‘The X-Files’ Stars Take a Knee While On Set

0

Colin Kaepernick’s gesture of taking a knee and protesting police brutality in the United States has transformed into a movement after Donald Trump’s tirade against NFL players’ protests. Now, the campaign has turned into a new version of the Ice Bucket Challenge and gone viral.

Now, some of the TV’s biggest stars taking part of the challenge. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny took a photo taking a knee and linking arms while on the set of the X-Files.

With the caption “#TheXFIles #TakeAKnee, the two actors showed their support of the NFL teams that have either kneeled, linked arms or both in the past couple of days despite Donald Trump’s call for the firing of any player that decides to protest.

But, the sci-fi stars are not the only entertainers taking part in the protest. Stevie Wonder took a knee before performing at the Global Citizen Festival saying, “It is only through life we can make life happen through ourselves and each other.” He added, “Our global brothers and sisters, I didn’t come here to preach, but I’m telling you, our spirits must be in the right place all the time.”

Even singer Pharrell Williams took a cue from the NFL protests and kneeled during his performance at the “Concert For Charlottesville” saying, “If I want to get on my knees right now for the people in my city…for the people in my state — that’s what that flag is for.”
