Heathcare.gov To Go Down for Maintenance During Open-Enrollment Period

0

As Republicans mount an effort to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, the Trump administration is making sure it is not easy for people to sign up for health insurance.

Last Friday, the administration announced that healthcare.gov, the website many Americans use to sign up for health insurance through insurance marketplaces, which was installed by Obamacare, will be down for maintenance for 12 hours every Sunday. As a result, scheduled maintenance will be taking place during the open-enrollment period.

The White House did not give an explanation for the outages, but following the Trump administration’s previous efforts to shut down Obamacare, it is not surprising to believe this maintenance is a scheduled plan to keep down enrollment. Essentially, it makes it slightly harder for Americans to sign up for health insurance.

As a part of a mission to make it appear the Affordable Care Act is not working, Tom Price’s Health and Human Services Department has already announced cuts to the programs that help fund Obamacare outreach, as well as advertising that lets Americans know of the upcoming open-enrollment period.

That said, Tom Price is currently stopping taxpayer-funded travel on private jets following a POLITICO report that more than $400,000 in charter jet spending for the HHS secretary’s travel have been spent since May.

Snap Stock Sways in Monday Trading

0

Snap was one of the biggest initial public offerings of 2017, but Wall Street seems to be walking away from the camera company with every new quarterly report the owner of Snapchat puts out.

Share price at Snap rocked in both directions in another week of trading this Monday after restrictions on employee stock sales were lifted causing a sell-off, according to Financial Times. FT also reported major investors including Temasek, Jana Partners, and Third Point had sold their shares of Snapchat.

On Monday, Snap initially dropped 4.7% to a new low of $11.28; Snap bounced back to recover more than 10 percent in intraday trading. However, by the afternoon, the shares were up by only 5 percent, back above the $12 mark. It is important to note the company sold shares in its initial public offering in March at $17.

Last Friday, Snap’s stock price fell by 14%, following after-market results on Thursday that were below even Wall Street’s reduced expectations. Then, it was revealed Dan Loeb’s hedge fund, Third Point, had sold all of their 2.25 million shares in Snap last quarter in June and instead bought more shares of Facebook.

Major concerns center around Snapchat user growth, as the company struggles to compete with Facebook’s social messaging apps. But, voicing their confidence, Snap co-founders Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy have promised not to sell any of their 400 million shares this year. Instead, the co-founders argue they “believe deeply” in the success of Snap.

Bitcoin Valuation Skyrockets – The Cryptocurrency is Now Worth $4,300

0

After reaching $4,000 on exchange markets over the weekend, Bitcoin cryptocurrency is continuing to rise, reaching a record $4,300 on Monday. Let me put that into context; Bitcoin is nearly trading at about $1,000 higher than a week ago, according to research from the Coinbase currency exchange.

According to CryptoCoin News, “The Bitcoin market cap soared past $70 billion.” Not to mention, “Bitcoin now has a greater total valuation than payment-processing behemoth PayPal”.

It is important to note that bitcoin could be bought for around $570 just about a year ago, illustrating a rise of around 645% in 12 months.

Coindesk says the market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies reached a $138 billion on Monday.

So what is causing the rise in the valuation of bitcoin?

The growth can be linked to several factors ranging from political concerns to a recent split into two currencies – the first being Bitcoin classic and Bitcoin cash. The change, which started on August 1st, was made to give the money a larger infrastructure. It also allowed for large trades in the currency to take place more frequency.

This speaks volumes for a currency that was introduced in 2009. Bitcoin has steadily accumulated both users and investors. Then blockchain, the technology that underlies bitcoin, has been embraced by professionals and experts including Fidelity, which now allows customers to track investments in cryptocurrencies, and Goldman Sachs.

But, there is also a growing demand for the cryptocurrency. Finance executive told CNBC that South Koreans had shown interest in the currency as the political disagreements between the United States and North Korea reach a tipping point. The network also reported a keen interest in Japan, with the yen accounting for over 40% of bitcoin purchases.

‘Deadpool 2’ Stunt Actor Killed During Filming

‘Deadpool 2’ stunt actor dies on set. According to reports, Vancouver police department said a female died while performing a motorcycle stunt on Monday. “Vancouver Police can confirm that a female stunt driver has died on the set of Deadpool during a stunt on a motorcycle,” police said in a statement.

This news comes just weeks after a stunt actor died on set of The Walking Dead. John Bernecker died after falling from a 25-foot-high balcony while performing a stunt on the Georgia set of The Walking Dead. Production was stopped after the veteran stuntman’s accident, and Bernecker was rushed to Atlanta Medical Center.

Deadpool 2 is an upcoming superhero movie based on the Marvel Comics character Deadpool. It will be the 12th installment in the X-Men film series and a sequel to the box office hit 2016 movie Deadpool. The movie will be directed by David Leitch based on a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, with Ryan Reynolds reprising the starring role alongside Morena Baccarin, T. J. Miller, Leslie Uggams, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapičić, Zazie Beetz, Josh Brolin, and Jack Kesy.

The original production team was supposed to lead the movie. However, Deadpool director Tim Miller did not return for the second film over creative differences with Ryan Reynolds and was later replaced by Leitch. An extensive casting search to fill the role of Cable took place, with Josh Brolin ultimately cast in the role. Filming began in June 2017 in British Columbia, Canada.

IBM, Sony Reveal Magnetic Tape Data Storage Breakthrough

0

The amount of data you can put on a hard drive continues to grow. Thanks to IBM and Sony, the two companies have jointly developed a new kind of tape that can hold 201-gigabits or roughly 25GB per square inch. While that may not seem that impressive considering, you can buy microSD cards that can hold 256GB of data. But when you fill a cartridge with over a kilometer of this new type of tape, you can store 330TB of data in a space that is the same size as a hard drive. That said, accessing that data is not as easy as a hard drive but, it is a problem solver for companies that need to hold years worth of data.

Computer hard drives feature thin layers of various metals to store tiny magnetic charges. However, a tape can be flexed, bend and wound around, which can be converted to a thin layer of iron oxide or chromium parties which are magnetized or demagnetized by a machine, which can create individual pieces of data.

But it begs the question – how did the researchers manage to add so much data to a piece of tape that you would see in a Sony’s Walkman? In the paper recently published in IEEE Transactions on Magnetics explained, the team at Sony developed a new kind of magnetic layer that is applied to the tape using a specialized technique called sputter deposition, which uses vapor instead of a liquid to lay down tiny magnetic particles that are just a few nanometers in size. Older methods of creating magnetic tape produced particles that could be large, but the smaller you make the particles, the more of them can be squeezed into a given space, which allows you to store more data.

Sony developed a new lubricant layer that ensures the tape runs through the machinery allowing it to read and write data as smoothly as possible, reducing friction and wear and tear, and extending the life of the storage medium. Having a tape jam can cause mechanical errors, which could be catastrophic.

Meanwhile, IBM’s research team developed a new read head just 48-nanometers in size that was capable of accurately reading the magnetic particles on Sony’s new tape, as well as technology allowing for precise control of the tape as it flows through the machine. As a result, with IBM’s research development, accuracy and precision have been improved as the magnetic particles holding the data get smaller.

That said, existing hardware will not be compatible with this new technology, and the technology is only available in research and development labs of IBM and Sony, and it will likely take a few years before it is commercially available.

Tinder Kicked out From Beach House Over Unauthorized Parties with Exclusive Invite-Only Party Goers

0

Tinder Select is an invite-only version of the dating app. Last month, the exclusive dating group hosted a series of parties at telecom mogul Michael Hirtenstein’s oceanfront property. Over the weekends of July 14th and July 21st, cops reportedly visited the property multiple times due to noise complaints from neighbors.

Page Six reports, “Officers found that the party was over capacity and Tinder didn’t have required events permit.” Some of the activities featured at the party include “skateboard ramp, a DJ and a garden tepee for “those tender Tinder moments,” according to Page Six.

Apparently, the following week, Tinder submitted a request for a party permit, but then it crossed out on the form and asked for a wedding permit but, after being denied, “they threw the party anyway,” Page Six explains.

East Hampton Star added an executive at Tinder rented out the property on Old Montauk Highway for the month for $135,000 to host the Select parties. As a result, Tinder marketing director is reportedly facing $20,000 in fines and the Was Hampton town board has decided to seek a temporary restraining order against the company to prevent Tinder from holding any more parties.

“They rented the house for July and told me they were having small private events,” Hirtenstein told Page Six. “When I heard neighbors complained and the police were up there, I sent [Tinder] a text saying, ‘Get out of my house,’ and they were like, ‘We already did.’

Ecologist Warns Trump’s Border Wall Could Hurt Endangered Species

0

It appears as though President Donald Trump may get his wall after all. Last week, the House approved a $1.6 billion spending bill that will fund the construction of a wall along the Mexican border, and yesterday the Department of Homeland Security issued a waiver to expedite border construction projects in the San Diego area. Moreover, speaker of the House Paul Ryan expressed his support in a video tweet saying, “It is time for The Wall.”

Rice University ecologist Scott Egan recently pointed out in an opinion editorial; this wall is also expected to disrupt the ecology that lives near the 1,900 mile-long wall.

“Evolutionary effects from the wall can change the balance of nature along the U.S.-Mexico border, putting wildlife in the area, including more than 100 endangered species, at risk,” wrote Egan. “Some of the larger animals that will be threatened by the border wall are the jaguar, ocelot, jaguarundi, Mexican gray wolf, desert big horn sheep and pronghorn antelope.”

Egan’s editorial piece correlated with a 2016 US Fish and Wildlife Service report that claims a war between the two countries would “potentially impact” over than 100 endangered species and birds, four types of wildlife refuges and fish hatcheries, and numerous protected wetlands. Endangered animals listed in the report also include bald eagles, sea turtles, bats, mice, and the West Indian manatee.

“The ecological effects should be immediate, starting with the construction of the wall and all the building materials, construction vehicles and people involved,” Egan told Gizmodo. “This will be especially harmful in delicate or rare habitats. The ‘long term’ effects, or evolutionary effects, will materialize soon after that.”

Egan argues there are two major negative ecological impacts the US government should be worried about. The first is population bottleneck, where species are literally cut in half. For certain species, a wall will produce two smaller populations, reducing genetic diversity and decreasing the chances of animals ability to adapt to environmental changes. The second deleterious ecological impact would be an increased chance of inbreeding, which makes it more likely for an animal pass on problematic genetic mutations.

Egan is concerned with natural migration routes and future changes caused by climate change.

“There are many animals that naturally migrate across the border each year, such as the black bears in West Texas, or the pronghorn antelope across the Southwest. Interrupting these natural movements could have devastating effects on these species on both sides of the border,” Egan said. “Similarly, the border wall will trap populations that continue to move north in response to a warming and changing planet, potentially killing individual animals and populations or resulting in the future extinction of entire species unable to find habitats south of the border to survive.”

As a result, some animals such as bears and jaguars may have no choice but to move into areas that are currently inhabited by humans. Egan’s said the same thing occurred in the 1970s with the military control was constructed between Pakistan and India.

‘Justice League’ Has a Mustache Problem

With the upcoming Justice League movie hitting the box office shortly, Warner Bros. and DC executives are hoping that the film will reach the same level of box office success as Wonder Woman. As a result, it is not surprising to hear that the studios are doing whatever it takes to make the movie a hit.

According to reports, the studio is spending $25 million to have extensive reshoots in Los Angeles and London, which have lasted around two months. While this is a lot longer and more expensive than most movies, Girls Trip was filmed on a budget of only $20 million; it has not been easy to free up the schedules of various in-demand actors.

Ezra Miller, the actor who plays The Flash, is currently reprising his role of Credence Barebone in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel. Also, Henry Cavil is working on the sixth Mission Impossible movie.

While Warner Bros. has been able to overcome MIller’s scheduling issues, they haven’t had quite as much success with Henry Cavill. The actor initially didn’t expect to return to Justice League for reshoots until after he had completed the sixth Mission: Impossible movie. Now the actor has had to jump back and forth between productions.

However, as Cavill grew a mustache for the Mission: Impossible movie role, Paramount did not allow him to shave the facial hair for the Justice League reshoots. So, the mustache will have to be digitally removed during post-production, which seems like it will cost a lot of money to eliminate some peach fuzz for the Warner Bros. studio.

But at least Henry Cavill isn’t taking it too seriously.

It’s nice to know that they are putting all their efforts into making sure that the movie is up to par. Despite the issues, it seems like the studio is attempting to keep the ball rolling following Wonder Woman’s success and starting a new launch of DC franchised films.

Box Office: ‘Girls Trip’, ‘Dunkirk’ are Surprise Hits, ‘Valerian’ Flops

Nowadays, there are very few directors, actors, and filmmakers that can guarantee a profit on an original idea, especially when the movie has an expensive budget. Not even Spielberg has been able to do that recently, even though Ready Player One may change that. However, Christopher Nolan, who filmed the Dark Knight trilogy, looks like he’s Hollywood’s hottest director. Following, the Dark Knight trilogy, Nolan has found success with Interstellar, Inception and this weekend’s Dunkirk.

The Christopher Nolan movie starring Tom Hardy managed to earn $51 million at the box office, which is nothing in comparison to Wonder Woman’s explosive box office hit, Nolan’s movies tend to do really well in the long term. For example, Inception opened with $62 million and eventually made $292 million at the box office. The same phenomenon occurred with Nolan’s Interstellar, which went from a $47 million opening to over $600 million worldwide.

Currently, Dunkirk has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- Cinemascore. As a result, word of mouth could make Nolan’s war movie a hit over the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, Malcolm Lee’s Girl’s Trip earned $28 million this weekend on a $20 million budget. The movie, which has an A+ Cinemascore, and an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, beat initial expectations. Ultimately, Malcolm Lee has mastered the art of making hit box office movies on relatively inexpensive budgets. Lee is the mastermind behind Best Man Holiday, which made $70 million, and Barbershop: The Next Cut. It is also a break-out movie for Tiffany Haddish, who previously worked as a background actor before landing a career changing role.

In one of the biggest box office bombs is Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The movie cost over $200 million to make and only managed to earn $16 million on its opening weekend. Mixed reviews and relatively no buzz, seemed to hurt the chances for the movie. However, a worldwide release could turn the upset into a winner, if audiences connect with the story.

Next week, Charlize Theron’s Atomic Blonde and T.J. Miller’s The Emoji Movie hits theaters.

‘Black Panther’ Teaser Receives Standing Ovation at Comic-Con

The Georgia filmed Marvel production, Black Panther is probably one of the most anticipated movies coming from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The production has a lot of pressure as it depicts a predominately black cast in a genre, which mostly features Caucasian actors. That said, a teaser trailer was released at Comic Con and the crowd reportedly gave the clip a standing ovation.

The movie starts with T’Challa and Wakanda still reeling with the events of Captain America: Civil War, the cast, and crew explained that the death of T’Challa’s father and Wakanda’s king, T’Chaka, are important to the movie’s storyline, Polygon reported.

“The best thing about the comic book was that T’Chala got his power from the people around him — and where I come from, that’s how we live,” said director Ryan Coogler.

As the cast left the stage, Marvel played several clips from the movie that were exclusive to the audience’s eyes only and the final clip received a standing ovation, according to Polygon.

There have been dozens of casting calls for the movie so, it is great to see a vision become a reality. Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Ny’yongo and Andy Serkis. Black Panther hits theaters on February 16, 2018.
