Apple is planning to spend $1 billion to create original content, according to a report by Bloomberg. But, the type of content Apple is seeking to produce is more family-friendly than you would expect.
The report claims Apple wants every show it produces suitable enough for an Apple Store, instead of content that includes strong language, nudity, and violence. Hollywood producers pitched edgier content but, that type of content has been turned away for more PG-rated kind of shows and movies.
The company is also planning on having a selection of shows ready for release by 2019. Moreover, unlike the previous Apple productions, Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karaoke: The Series, the new shows will be available on a different platform. Instead, Apple Music will include music videos and documentaries.

This decision for more family friendly content should not come as a surprise. For example, Carpool Karaoke was supposed to launch in April, but it was delayed until August due to some of the content. “Days before Apple Inc. planned to celebrate the release of its first TV show last spring at a Hollywood hotel, Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook told his deputies the fun had to wait. Foul language and references to vaginal hygiene had to be cut from some episodes of Carpool Karaoke, a show featuring celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba, Blake Shelton, and Chelsea Handler cracking jokes while driving around Los Angeles.”
But the release of the series was not that big of a deal, “While the delay of Carpool Karaoke was widely reported last April, the reasons never were. Edits were made, additional episodes were shot, and Apple shifted resources to another show. When Carpool Karaoke was released in August, it didn’t make much of a splash.”
The enterprise has been working hard to find new and original content. The company hired Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht, two Sony Pictures Television executives to lead the video programming push. Apple also hired several other industry executives.

The general counsel for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, Marc Elias, is accused of helping organize funding from the campaign to fund the research firm Fusion GPS that helped pay for the anti-Trump dossier.
The same dossier that launched allegations about the president ranging from Russian collusion to “golden showers.”
The claims came from an anonymous source speaking to The Washington Post. IN the report, The Washington Post reports that the Hillary Clinton campaign, through their attorney Elias and the Democratic National Committee, allegedly “helped fund research that resulted in a now-famous dossier.” Trump has denied the allegations behind the dossier. Meanwhile, Fusion GPS has refused to release details of who funded their sources.
Washington Post: Marc Elias was the bridge connecting the Hillary Clinton campaign to Fusion GPS and the Trump Dossier
The Washington Post cited anonymous people familiar with the dossier, reporting “Marc E. Elias, a lawyer representing the Clinton campaign and the DNC, retained Fusion GPS, a Washington firm, to conduct the research. After that, Fusion GPS hired dossier author Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer with ties to the FBI and the U.S. intelligence community, according to the people. Elias and his law firm, Perkins Coie, retained the firm in April 2016 on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the DNC.”
The post included that a source said Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee might not have been aware of the Fusion GPS investigation. However, Elias did reportedly receive the report. The newspaper reported, “At no point, these people said, did the Clinton campaign or the DNC direct Steele’s activities. They described him as a Fusion GPS subcontractor.”
Following the report, Marc Elias retweeted a post on Twitter that shared a Wall Street Journal story with the title, “Former Trump campaign manager Manafort under investigation by Manhattan U.S. attorney for possible money laundering.”

The dossier contained information with unverified allegations about President Trump. It was released on January 10, 2017, less than two weeks before Donald Trump became President. Republicans initially funded the company’s efforts, but after the Republican primary was over, Democrats financed the investigation – The Washington Post alleging Clinton’s campaign and the DNC funded the dossier.
The dossier claimed, without offering evidence, that Russian government officials have blackmail on Trump, and his campaign maintained ties with Russia during the elections.
Who is Marc Elias?
According to New York Times reporter Ken Vogel, Elias “vigorously” denies his involvement in the Trump dossier. Vogel wrote on Twitter, “When I tried to report this story, Clinton campaign lawyer @marceelias pushed back vigorously, saying ‘You (or your sources) are wrong.’” Maggie Haberman, of the New York Times, shared the Post bombshell story and wrote on Twitter, “Folks involved in funding this lied about it, and with sanctimony, for a year.”
New York Times reporter, Anita Dunn reports, Elias was familiar with some of the information in the dossier. But, she says “he didn’t have and hadn’t seen the full document, nor was he involved in pitching it to reporters.”
Marc Elias held a significant role in the presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton and John Kerry. According to Freebeacon, the Washington D.C. attorney is described as the go-to person “When Democratic campaigns across the country have major problems, their go-to fixer is super-lawyer Marc Elias.”
According to Perkins Coie law firm that Marc Elias works for, “Elias is the chair of Perkins Coie’s Political Law practice. His practice focuses on representing public officials, candidates, parties, corporations, tax-exempt organizations and Political Action Committees (PACs) in connection with campaign finance, governmental ethics, lobbying disclosure and white-collar criminal defense matters. His clients include numerous FORTUNE 500 corporations, national nonprofit organizations, lobbying firms, Am Law 100 law firms, prominent individuals, candidates, and campaigns.”
Outside of working on Hillary Clinton and Kerry campaigns, Elias has also worked with other major Democratic political organizations. “Marc is currently general counsel to Hillary for America, the presidential campaign of Hillary Rodham Clinton. He served in the same role for John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign. Marc’s clients include the Democratic National Committee, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Democratic Governors Associations and U.S. senators, governors, representatives and their campaigns.”
Elias’ biography describes him as a proponent of significant pieces of legislation and regulations. As a “nationally recognized authority in the Federal Election Campaign Act, Lobbying Disclosure Act, Ethics in Government Act and Foreign Agents Registration Act,” and “a preeminent counselor in the areas of congressional and executive branch ethics and gift rules, and federal and state pay-to-play laws and rules.”
According to the Elias’ biography he “also advises and litigates claims under the Voting Rights Act, Help America Vote Act and National Voter Registration Act. Marc has litigated voting and campaign finance cases throughout the country in federal and state court. He has been involved in voting rights and/or redistricting litigation in a number of states, including Texas, Florida, New York, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, Nevada, and Minnesota.”
Marc Elias has a long working history with the Democrats. According to his law firm’s bio, Marc was appointed by the DNC Chair Wasserman Schultz to ” identify places where the party can strengthen and improve operations in future elections.” Elias also worked as lead counsel for Senator Al Franken in the 2008 Minnesota election recount and contest, which is the largest recount and contest in American contest, according to his biography. “He successfully argued the case before the Minnesota State Supreme Court, which resulted in a unanimous decision affirming that Franken had received the highest number of votes legally cast in the 2008 general election for U.S. Senator.”
Heather Lind stars in the AMC historical drama Turn: Washington’s Spies is claiming former President George H.W. Bush, America’s oldest living president, of sexual assault, alleging that Bush sexually assaulted her while telling her a “dirty joke” in front of his wife, Barbara Bush.
Lind plays a spy in the Revolutionary War drama on AMC. She accused the 93-year-old former leader of the free world on Instagram but wrote that the alleged incident occurred four years ago. She included the hashtag #metoo in the accusations, joining the movement across the United States of women who have used the hashtag to publicly allege that they were victims of sexual harassment or sexual abuse. Actress Alyssa Milana reignited the twitter hashtag following the sexual abuse allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.
The former president released a statement to the UK Daily Mail. “President Bush would never — under any circumstance — intentionally cause anyone distress, and he most sincerely apologizes if his attempt at humor offended Ms. Lind,” the statement said.
In an Instagram post, she posted on October 24, Heather Lind claims that Barbara Bush was present and rolled her eyes after the former president sexually assaulted. Heather Lind shared a photo of Bush Sr. in his wheelchair shaking hands with Barack Obama during a gathering of ex-presidents to help with the hurricane disaster relief. She claims that she does not respect the former president and she felt compelled to speak out after seeing the photo of Bush Sr. and Barack Obama. Here’s what she said:
I was disturbed today by a photo I saw of President Barack Obama shaking hands with George H. W. Bush in a gathering of ex-presidents organizing aid to states and territories damaged by recent hurricanes. I found it disturbing because I recognize the respect ex-presidents are given for having served. And I feel pride and reverence toward many of the men in the photo. But when I got the chance to meet George H. W. Bush four years ago to promote a historical television show I was working on, he sexually assaulted me while I was posing for a similar photo. He didn’t shake my hand. He touched me from behind from his wheelchair with his wife Barbara Bush by his side. He told me a dirty joke. And then, all the while being photographed, touched me again. Barbara rolled her eyes as if to say “not again”. His security guard told me I shouldn’t have stood next to him for the photo. We were instructed to call him Mr. President. It seems to me a President’s power is in his or her capacity to enact positive change, actually help people, and serve as a symbol of our democracy. He relinquished that power when he used it against me and, judging from the comments of those around him, countless other women before me. What comforts me is that I too can use my power, which isn’t so different from a President really. I can enact positive change. I can actually help people. I can be a symbol of my democracy. I can refuse to call him President, and call out other abuses of power when I see them. I can vote for a President, in part, by the nature of his or her character, knowing that his or her political decisions must necessarily stem from that character. My fellow cast-mates and producers helped me that day and continue to support me. I am grateful for the bravery of other women who have spoken up and written about their experiences. And I thank President Barack Obama for the gesture of respect he made toward George H. W. Bush for the sake of our country, but I do not respect him.
#metoo
Recently, both the former president and his wife have been ill. Earlier this year, Bush was placed in intensive care in the hospital after he complained of shortness of breath. Barbara Bush was also hospitalized shortly after that. Despite their illnesses, they have appeared in public events in recent months. Bush Sr. has been meeting with veterans and commenting on the crisis in Puerto Rico.
Hollywood reacts to Lind’s Instagram
Some of Hollywood’s most prominent industry professionals have written stories that back up Lind’s account. They claim that they were there when the incident occurred. Joel Stillerman, Hulu’s chief content officer, wrote, ““As you know, Heather, I was there. It was a terrible moment for you, but you were strong then, and you are strong now. In the wake of all the recent news, everyone who has been proximate to an incident like this has had to contemplate whether their response was appropriate. I’m sorry you had to live through that, and I hope the groundswell of awareness around this issue makes it harder for perpetrators to act like this, and easier for victims and bystanders to call it out when it occurs. Stay strong.”
Other co-stars on the show Turn, have also voiced their support for the actress. The show’s executive producer/showrunner for Turn supported the actress. “I was there. Probably ten feet away. I remember watching your eyes bulge in shock. The cameras snapping away. We all learned what happened about five minutes later and were shocked. I remember seeing you in the alcove of the theater doors, trying to collect yourself afterwards. I think it’s incredibly brave of you to share this.”
Lind’s history with politics
It is important to note that Lind has had a long history of commenting on political topics including showing her support of Hillary Clinton. Lind posted a photo of Clinton with the caption #yaaskween” She also wrote more about politics during the presidential campaign. In 2016, she retweeted someone else’s tweet that said, “Sorry, Trump and Pence. There’s nothing more ‘broad shouldered’ than a power pants suit. #VPDebate.”
George H.W. Bush, a Republican, is served as the nation’s 41st president, holding office from 1989 to 993 and is the father of the 43 President, George W. Bush. Bush also obtained other top positions including serving CIA director, a Congressman and as Vice President.
Heather Lind’s acting career
Lind plays a Revolutionary War-era spy. According to the AMC breakdown for the show TURN, the show centers around “the stirring and treacherous world of the Revolutionary War and introduces Abraham Woodhull who, after aligning with a group of childhood friends, forms the Culper Ring — America’s first spy ring.”
AMC describes Heather Lind’s character Anna Strong by saying, “Anna, a.k.a. ‘The Signal of Setauket,’ is the heart of the four friends comprising the Culper Ring—ready to do whatever is necessary for the cause.”
Heather Lind started on Broadway. Her first role on Broadway was opposite Al Pacino in The Merchant of Venice. She would later win the Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut, according to her online biography.
“She previously played the role when the production originated at the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park, where she also starred in A Winter’s Tale. She also starred as Eliza Doolittle opposite Robert Sean Leonard in Pygmalion at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Television credits include a recurring role on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, for which Lind won a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, and she co-starred opposite Sam Rockwell in the independent film A Single Shot,” according to the show bio.
She most recently worked on Jean-Marc Vallée’s Demolition, opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, and in Mistress America with Greta Gerwig, directed by Noah Baumbach.
Before starring in TV shows and movies, she “attended Fordham College at Lincoln Center and received her MFA from the NYU Graduate Acting Program,” the biography notes. She was born in Pennsylvania but raised in New York. “Raised in Guilderland, New York, her father was a painter, and an educator at a museum and her mother was a ballet and nursery school teacher. Both are retired,” the IMDB reports.
On a side note, her identical twin sister Christina Bennett Lind is also an actress. She is known for Calico Skies and End of the Innocents, according to IMDB.
Facebook has released a new set of guidelines for publishers on how the social network ranks content.
On Monday, Facebook’s head of the News Feed, Adam Mosseri, said during an announcement at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism that the new guidelines were created to allow publishers understand “what works and what doesn’t on our platform.”
That said, the new guidelines don’t appear to show any significant changes in their rules. Instead, it highlights the advice Facebook has given to publishers in the past. Such as not publishing “clickbait,” or links to “low-quality” pages. The company also said their algorithm uses “signals” to predict the likelihood a user would want to read the story.
The publisher guidelines do point out the type of content it does not allow such as links to “gratuitous” violence or hate speech.

This news comes after Facebook was reportedly testing a significant change that would significantly alter the way publishers post content on the social network. A decision so drastic, the Guardian calls it “catastrophic for publishers relying on the social network for their audience.”
Facebook is testing the system in six countries including Slovakia, Serbia, and Sri Lanka changes the news feed so that almost all non-promoted posts are not seen where Facebook features entirely original content from friends and advertisements. The change has reportedly negatively affected a users’ engagement with Facebook pages, with some outlets reporting a drop of 60% to 80%. The Guardian argues that if this new change is implemented, “such a change would destroy many smaller publishers.”
That said, Mosseri also addressed a reported “pay to play” test Facebook was trying in six countries, which separated News Feed content from publishers into a secondary feed, limiting the reach.“I think we could have communicated it better,” Mosseri said, but added there are no plans to expand the test and the company would not “launch that as-is.”

AMC’s The Walking Dead premiered on Sunday night and the show has hit a 5-year season premiere low point.
The Walking Dead hit a high point in ratings with 13.3 million average viewers by Season 5. That number continued to skyrocket to 18.8 by Season 6. However, the Season 8 premiere saw a dramatic low point that has not been seen since Season 3.

According to Nielsen rating numbers reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the first episode of Season 8 of The Walking Dead had 11.4 million viewers, 6.5 million of them adults 18-49, which translates to a 5.0 rating in the key demo. When you compare those numbers to a year ago, that is a drop of 43% of total viewers.
The show did gain more viewers in the live-plus-three numbers with a total of 16.4 million viewers. That is a second consecutive season of downward ratings after the show had once skyrocketed to 20.1 million viewers by 2014.

That said, The Walking Dead is still the highest-rated scripted series on television. Meanwhile, The Talking Dead premiered and had 4.2 million viewers after the debut of The Walking Dead season 8 premiere.
In the photo, Morgan, who is best known for playing the villain Negan on the zombie drama, John Winchester on Supernatural, and Denny Duquette on Grey’s Anatomy, poses with a fan wearing a shirt supporting Blue Lives Matter.

Morgan’s decision to support Blue Lives Matter pissed off many Walking Dead fans. One twitter user wrote, “i have been betrayed quite a few times in my life, but jeffrey dean morgan wearing a blue lives matter shirt today might top the list.” Another user argued, “oh great so now i gotta cancel jeffrey dean morgan and every other cast member of twd who liked his last instagram post.”
It is not clear whether that had an impact on the ratings but, it is arguable that it didn’t help.
PayPal CEO Dan Schulman’s decision to expand the payments platform beyond just websites and into stores has panned out to be a great business decision.
The company is expected to bring home revenue between $3.57 billion and $3.63 billion this quarter. PayPal is becoming a platform of choice for shoppers to use for online orders. As a result, shares of PayPal rose by 6.3 percent in after-hours trading, which is no surprise considering the company’s stock has risen by 70 percent this year alone.

PayPal’s latest move has been expanding the company’s Venmo service past peer-to-peer payments such as splitting restaurant tabs to a method in which users can pay directly. Currently, PayPal saysVenmo is being used at more than 2 million U.S. retailers. Not to mention, the service has managed $9 billion worth of transaction in the third quarter, which is almost double from last year.

Ultimately, the decision to increase the places where PayPal is accepted has paid off for the payment processing company. Schulman wants to continue their expansion by making sure PayPal is accepted in stores where most purchases still occur. He plans to lure shoppers by making it easier for shopping by allowing them to order ahead and skip lines. The one-button feature of mobile wallets means shoppers can pay faster with their phones by using their saved personal banking information.
Facebook announced a few months ago a plan to start testing subscriptions and paywalls for their Instant Articles. Now, Facebook has begun testing subscription support for instant articles.
Facebook will begin with two different paywall options. The first choice is a model where everyone gets to read ten free stories per month before having to subscribe. The second model is where publishers choose which articles to lock.
When a user who is not a subscriber hits a paywall, they will be asked to subscribe for full access to the publisher’s content.
If you want to purchase a subscription, Facebook will take you to the publisher’s website to complete the transaction, which means a business will keep 100% of the revenue and the transaction data. The subscriptions will then include access to the publisher’s full website, and existing subscribers can authenticate within Instant Articles where they can get full access without having to pay twice for the same service.
The decision for publishers to keep 100% of their subscription earnings is a big deal for businesses. But, not everyone is happy about the business arrangement. According to Recode, Apple says it violates the company’s rules about subscriptions sold inside apps. Currently, Apple gets 30% of all subscriptions sold inside 3rd-party iOS apps, so Facebook’s current signup method eliminate them of this revenue. As a result, this is only available on Android and not Apple. In fact, there is no timeline for when a deal will be made with Apple.
Facebook says many publishers saw subscriptions as an essential priority and requested the ability to control the paywall and the earning generated from the subscription system. So far, ten participating publishers include The Boston Globe, The Economist, Heart, La Republic, Le Parisien, Spiegel, The Telegraph, bronc, and The Washington Post.
Whoever doubted Margot Robbie as an actor, prepared to have your jaw-floored with the new trailer for the upcoming Georgia-filmed movie, I-Tonya.
The movie centers around Tonya Harding’s journey from her early skating days to her training for the 1994 Winter Olympics before her ex-husband intervenes and tries to sabotage rival Nancy Kerrigan. The infamous event made headlines for months.
While Harding disputed her involvement, she was eventually convicted of hindering the investigation into the incident. She received three years probation, 500 hours of community service and a $160,000 fine and ultimately banned from the U.S. Figure Skating Association for life.
In the trailer, you can hear Margot Robbie play Tonya Harding with perfection. “America, they want someone to love. But they want someone to hate,” Robbie says in character. “And the haters always say, ‘Tonya, tell the truth!’ There’s no such thing as truth. I mean, it’s bulls—.”
According to Project Casting, I, Tonya filmed throughout Georgia in early January with reshoots taking place as late as May 2017. There were dozens of casting calls ranging from skaters to FBI Agents.
Playboy is changing the game with their November/December 2017 issue. This time around, the highly controversial and often trend-setting magazine will feature the magazine’s first transgender playmate, 26-year-old French model Ines Rau.
While Rau has appeared in the magazine in the past, she will get the full playmate treatment this time around, with a centerfold all to herself. The issue will also feature a special tribute to Hugh Hefner, who died only a few weeks ago.
“Being a woman is just being a woman,” Rau told Playboy in an interview accompanying her photoshoot. She also admitted that she did not identify as transgender for quite some time, but now that she does, she feels at peace. “It’s a salvation to speak the truth about yourself, whether it’s your gender, sexuality, whatever,” Rau continued. “The people who reject you aren’t worth it. It’s not about being loved by others; it’s about loving yourself.”
While she took a long time to understand her personal identity, she said that Ines Rau always knew that she would become famous.
“I always knew from within, when I was a little kid in my room in the ghetto, that a beautiful destiny was waiting for me,” Rau added. “I don’t know how to explain it. A little voice was telling me, ‘You’ll see. Patience.’”
“When I was doing this shoot, I was thinking of all those hard days in my childhood,” Rau continued. “And now everything happening gives me so much joy and happiness. I thought, ‘Am I really going to be a Playmate—me?’ It’s the most beautiful compliment I’ve ever received. It’s like getting a giant bouquet of roses.”
Rau’s self-confidence is paying off. According to Dazed, she has also signed a deal and is set to appear in an upcoming feature film. Not to mention, Rau has walked in many designer fashion shows, including Balmain, and appeared in Vogue Italia.
Rau may be the first Playboy playmate. But, in 1981, Caroline “Tula” Cossey posed for Playboy, making her the first transgender model. She also had a role in the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only, but that happened before she came out publicly as transgender.
Blue Apron is approaching their next earnings report in the next few weeks; the company said Wednesday they plan on laying off 6% of their staff as part of “a company-wide realignment of personnel to support its strategic priorities.”
Blue Apron was one of the most highly anticipated IPOs of the year. But since going public, Wall Street has cut Blue Apron’s stock price in half, and it has been unable to rise since then. The company is an example of a business that faces significant challenges that include acquiring and retaining customers as well as a competing with the e-commerce giant, Amazon.
These layoffs hit the company’s corporate offices and fulfillment centers. Blue Apron said it had 5,393 employees on June 30 this year, which means over 200 people will be laid off.
“A company-wide realignment, like the one we announced, is always painful, and especially so for a close-knit team like ours,” CEO Matt Salzberg said in a note to employees. “Our leadership and Board did not take this decision lightly, and I want to assure you that we believe it was necessary as we focus the company on future growth and achieving profitability. The actions that we took today flowed from the roadmapping (sic) and reprioritization exercise that we recently undertook. As part of that work, we identified the need to reduce some roles, open others, and streamline decision making for greater accountability. Wherever possible, we sought to fill new roles with existing employees.”
For Blue Apron to stay competitive, it is common for a company to go through a round of layoffs. That said, Blue Apron will have to find a new business strategy that will convince investors that it should remain an independent company that can continue to scale. Not to mention, one of Blue Apron’s competitors HelloFresh is also planning on going public.
