0

Starbucks customers are taking to Twitter and calling for a boycott of the coffee chain after the company’s CEO criticized President Donald Trump’s immigration executive order and announced a plan to hire 10,000 refugees.

On Sunday, Starbucks declared a project to hire 10,000 refugees over the course of the next five years.

“We are living in an unprecedented time, one in which we are witness to the conscience of our country, and the promise of the American Dream, being called into question,” CEO Howard Schultz explained.

While some Starbucks customers celebrated Schultz’s response to Donald Trump’s executive order, some customers were less than impressed by the company’s decision.

No one wants your overpriced crap anymore except for Bohemian Douchebag Millenials trying to look cool. ,” one Twitter user argued.

Another Twitter user asserted, “Instead of hiring 10,000 AMERICAN VETERANS, has decided to hire 10,000 ‘refugees’. Calling on all Americans to !”

Many other CEOs have spoken out about Donald Trump’s immigration executive order. Facebook, Tesla, Uber, Airbnb, and Lyft all commented on the Trump’s new immigration policy. In fact, Airbnb explains they will be providing free housing to refugees, Uber plans on compensating drivers, and Lyft is donating $1,000,000 to those affected by Trump’s immigration ban.

Donald Trump’s immigration executive order

Last Friday, Donald Trump signed an executive order that banned Syrian refugees from entering the United States. The new immigration policy would not allow residents from “terror-prone” countries from entering the country. These countries inTrclude Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen, and Somalia.

On Monday morning, Donald Trump defended the immigration ban on Twitter. “If the ban were announced with a one week notice, the “bad” would rush into our country during that week. A lot of bad “dudes” out there!”

The feature will use artificial intelligence to process orders through the Starbucks app. Customers can talk to the virtual assistant in a chat display. Also, the virtual assistant can confirm the details of the order from the app. The beta version of the My Starbucks barista will become available to 1,000 customers with a plan to release nationwide by the summer of 2017.

Starbucks Reorder Skill

Starbucks’ new feature with Amazon’s Alexa is called the “Starbucks Reorder Skill.” Customers can say, “Alexa, order my Starbucks,” and the device will purchase the items consumers typically buy.

“The Starbucks experience is built on the personal connection between our barista and customer, so everything we do in our digital ecosystem must reflect that sensibility,” said Gerri Martin-Flickinger, chief technology officer for Starbucks, explained in a statement.

“Our team is focused on making sure that Starbucks voice ordering within our app is truly personal and equally important was finding the right partner in Amazon to test and learn from this new capability. These initial releases are easy to use providing a direct benefit to customers within their daily routine and we are confident that this is the right next step in creating convenient moments to complement our more immersive formats. We expect to learn a lot from these experiences and to evolve them over time.”

The Starbucks “congestion” problem

These features come as the company reported long lines as a problem and affecting sales, according to CNNMoney. During the company’s earnings call last week, COO Kevin Johnson explained congestion in Starbucks stores caused customers who considered visiting the Starbucks did not pay because of  “congestion.”

Delta Systems Outage Causes Flight Cancellations and Delays

Delta is the second largest U.S. airline. The airline company operates thousands of flights every day using over 800 airplanes and flying over 180 million passengers a year. But, over the weekend, Delta Airlines suffered technical issues and temporarily grounded all of their domestic flights.

Delta flight cancellations

The airline took to Twitter to announce the flight cancellations. “Delta teams are expeditiously working to fix a systems outage that has resulted in departure delays and cancellations,” Delta said on Twitter. “Flights in the air remain unaffected.”

Delta then tweeted, “Approximately 150 flights have been cancelled tonight with more expected. Not all delays/cancellations are being reflected on Delta systems.”

Then, early this morning Delta tweeted the company canceled several additional flights. “Approximately 80 flights scheduled for today have been canceled with additional cancellations possible.”

Ultimately, Delta’s domestic flights suffered an over two-hour delay, which grounded over 100 flights. Delta explained that the essential IT systems went down around 6:30 p.m. Sunday. But, the system was restored several hours later shortly after midnight.

“I want to apologize to all of our customers who have been impacted by this frustrating situation,” Delta’s CEO Ed Bastian said. “This type of disruption is not acceptable to the Delta family.”

Delta promises a change fee waiver for all customers affected by the systems outage and flight cancellation. Furthermore, the airline also suggests Delta travelers to check their flight status, if they are traveling today.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the two-hour delay was caused by “automation issues” at Delta, according to Bloomberg.

United Airlines “IT issue”

Last week, United Airlines shut down all domestic flights over a reported “IT issue.” After a two hour delay, United Airlines resumed all flights. Also, earlier this month, Air Canada and Porter Airlines experienced technical issues. As a result, both airlines had to cancel some flights.

6-Foot Tapeworm Removed Through a Man’s Mouth

Physicians removed a tapeworm nearly the same height as NBA all-star Kyrie Irving. After a patient had complained of fatigue and abdominal pains, doctors removed a 6-foot long tapeworm from a man’s intestines through his mouth.

Published in The New England Journal of Medicinedoctors in India removed a tapeworm through a man’s mouth after discovering the parasite during a colonoscopy procedure.

Doctors found the pork tapeworm, also known as Taenia solium, in the small intestine of a man in his 40’s. The patient suffered from fatigue and stomach pains. Doctors would later discover the parasite was causing the problems.

It took over an hour for doctors to remove the 6-foot long tapeworm. “A gastroscope and forceps were used to identify the tip of the tapeworm, and the tapeworm was extracted through the patient’s mouth,” researchers explained in their study.

A month following the procedure doctors report that the patient has remained asymptomatic.

Pork Tapeworms symptoms

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, people typically become infected with a parasitic tapeworm after eating undercook meat from infected animals such as pigs and cows. A tapeworm can grow longer than 12 feet and live for years. Also, the pork tapeworm can move out of the intestines. As a result, pork tapeworms can travel to the brain, eye, or heart. If the pork tapeworm travels to the brain, it can cause seizures and nervous system issues. Furthermore, doctors recommend seeking medical help if you discover something that resembles a white worm in your stool.

Tapeworms discovered in Salmon

Earlier this month, scientists discovered tapeworms inside Salmon found in the United States. The CDC published a study in the February 2017 publication of Emerging Infectious Diseases. In the study, researchers examined 64 different wild Pacific salmon. After studying the fish, researchers found parasitic larva inside the Alaskan pink salmon. Pacific salmon is transported unfrozen. Consequently, transported salmon provides an environment conducive for tapeworms allowing for them to survive.

Airbnb is Providing Free Housing to Refugees Affected by Trump’s Immigration Executive Order

0

Following the chaos that has erupted following President Donald Trump’s immigration executive order, Airbnb is providing free housing to refugees and anyone not allowed in the United States.

On Saturday, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, took to Twitter saying, “Open doors brings all of US together. Closing doors further divides US. Let’s all find ways to connect people, not separate them.”

Then on Sunday evening, Airbnb’s CEO revealed they will be providing free housing to refugees affected by the executive order. “Airbnb is providing free housing to refugees and anyone not allowed in the US,” he said on Twitter. “Stay tuned for more, contact me if urgent need for housing.”

Donald Trump discussed the immigration ban on Facebook. Trump explained that his goal is to keep America safe. Trump also compared his immigration executive order to a 2011 policy President Obama enacted that banned visas to Iraqi refugees for six months. In addition, President Trump wanted to make it clear that this immigration executive order “is not a Muslim ban, as the media is falsely reporting.”

However, many Silicon Valley executives have publicly criticized Donald Trump’s latest executive order over the weekend including, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. For instance, Mark Zuckerberg said on Facebook, “Expanding the focus of law enforcement beyond people who are real threats would make all Americans feel less safe by diverting resources, while millions of undocumented folks who don’t pose a threat will live in fear of deportation.”

Have an Idea to Fix Trump’s Immigration Ban? Tesla’s Elon Musk Wants to Know

Elon Musk is a member of President Donald Trump’s economic advisory board. As a result, Musk will be able to have a direct line of communication with the leader of the free world. Now, the CEO of Tesla is asking for “specific amendments” for the president’s executive order on immigration.

Over the weekend, several tech leaders took to social media to voice their opinion on Trump’s immigration ban on “terror-prone” countries. Elon Musk was among the tech giants throwing their two cents in the ring.

Earlier this weekend Musk commented on the Immigration Executive order. “The blanket entry ban on citizens from certain primarily Muslim countries is not the best way to address the country’s challenges,” Musk said.

“Many people negatively affected by this policy are strong supporters of the US. They’ve done right, not wrong & don’t deserve to be rejected,” Musk added.

Then on Sunday evening, Elon Musk took to Twitter to ask for advice. Musk linked to a Wall Street Journal article explaining the immigration order. “Please read immigration order. Lmk specific amendments. Will seek advisory council consensus & present to President,” Musk said on Twitter.

Musk will meet with Donald Trump during an economic advisory board meeting this Friday. Along with the CEO of Tesla, the chief executive officer of Uber, Travis Kalanick, will also be in attendance.

Over the weekend, Kalanick responded to the immigration executive order. Uber plans on compensating drivers affected by the immigration ban during the next three months to mitigate the some of the financial stress the new executive order will have on them.

Donald Trump issued a statement regarding the immigration ban on Facebook. “We will keep it free and keep it safe, as the media knows, but refuses to say,” Trump said. “My policy is similar to what President Obama did in 2011 when he banned visas for refugees from Iraq for six months. The seven countries named in the Executive Order are the same countries previously identified by the Obama administration as sources of terror. To be clear, this is not a Muslim ban, as the media is falsely reporting.”

Trump Immigration Ban Prompts Lyft to Donate $1 Million to ACLU

0

As #DeleteUber goes viral and Silicon Valley executives release official statements, Uber’s ride-sharing competitor is taking a firm stance against President Trump’s new immigration ban. Lyft announced on Sunday that they would donate a million dollars to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to “defend our Constitution.”

“This weekend, Trump closed the country’s borders to refugees, immigrants, and even documented residents from around the world based on their country of origin, ” the company explained in an email sent to users.

“Banning people of a particular faith or creed, race or identity, sexuality or ethnicity, from entering the U.S. is antithetical to both Lyft’s and our nation’s core values. We stand firmly against these actions, and will not be silent on issues that threaten the values of our community.”

Meanwhile, Uber announced that they would compensate drivers who are currently affected by Trump’s executive order. Uber’s CEO Travis Kalanick explained in a statement, “We are working out a process to identify these drivers and compensate them pro bono during the next three months to help mitigate some of the financial stress and complications with supporting their families and putting food on the table. We will have more details on this in the coming days,” Kalanick said.

On Friday, President Trump signed an executive order that stopped Syrian refugees and individuals from “terror-prone” countries from entering the United States. These countries include residents from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen, and Somalia.

On Friday, Mark Zuckerberg openly criticized Trump’s executive order. “We need to keep this country safe, but we should do that by focusing on people who actually pose a threat,” Zuckerberg explained in a Facebook post.

When asked about the immigration ban, President Trump responded by saying, “It’s not a Muslim ban, but we were totally prepared,” The New York Times reports. “It’s working out very nicely. You see it at the airports, you see it all over.”

FDA Warns Toxic Belladonna Found in Homeopathic Teething Products

0

On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that laboratory tests found levels of toxic belladonna in particular homeopathic teething products.

The FDA reports that after laboratory analysis the federal organization found inconsistent levels of belladonna, which could pose a risk to infants and children. As a result, the FDA urges consumers not to use these homeopathic teething tablets. Also, the FDA has contacted the Standard Homeopathic Company in Los Angeles calling for the company to recall their teething tablet products containing belladonna.

“The body’s response to belladonna in children under two years of age is unpredictable and puts them at unnecessary risk,” said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, explained in a statement. ”We recommend that parents and caregivers not give these homeopathic teething tablets to children and seek advice from their health care professional for safe alternatives.”

The FDA also points out that the agency has not approved homeopathic teething products. However, this is not the first time the FDA warned consumers about the risks associated with homeopathic products. Moreover, in November 2016, the FDA reports Raritan Pharmaceuticals recalled three belladonna-containing homeopathic products; CVS sold two of those products.

FDA warns consumers who have recently given their child the homeopathic teething products to immediately seek medical care if their child displays the following symptoms:

  • Symptoms
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Excessive Sleepiness
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Agitation

What is Belladonna?

The U.S. National Library of Medicine says “Belladonna” can be used as a sedative, painkiller, motion sickness and motion sickness. However, when taken by mouth, belladonna is toxic. Side effects include: “include dry mouth, enlarged pupils, blurred vision, red dry skin, fever, fast heartbeat inability to urinate or sweat, hallucinations, spasms, mental problems, convulsions, and coma.”

Here’s Why #DeleteUber is Now Trending on Twitter

0

#DeleteUber is now trending on Twitter following protests of Donald Trump’s immigration ban. On Saturday evening, the New York Taxi Workers Alliance refused to pick up passengers at New York’s JFK airport for one hour as a form of protest of Trump’s latest executive orders.

The NYTWA called for other taxi drivers to protest in solidarity against the immigration ban since so many taxi drivers are from the countries listed in Trump’s “terror-prone” list.

Then, Uber’s New York Twitter account posted a tweet saying “Surge pricing has been turned off at #JFK Airport. This may result in longer wait times. Please be patient.”

Surge pricing causes the price for Uber rides to increase during certain times, especially when demand is high. For example, during New Year’s Eve, prices for Uber rides typically increase.

Many people took this as a sign that Uber was attempting to profit off of the NYTWA’s protest.

By Sunday morning, Uber tweeted, “Last tweet not meant to break strike.” According to a statement issued to BuzzFeed News, Uber explained, “We’re sorry for any confusion about our earlier tweet — it was not meant to break up any strike. We wanted people to know they could use Uber to get to and from JFK at normal prices, especially tonight.”

Uber’s Co-Founder Response to the Immigration ban

Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick, who is also part of Trump’s economic advisory team, released a statement regarding the president’s immigration ban. In the declaration, Kalanick joined other Silicon Valley giants in addressing how the travel ban would impact their employees.

“This order has far broader implications as it also affects thousands of drivers who use Uber and come from the listed countries, many of whom take long breaks to go back home to see their extended family,” Kalanick explained in a Facebook post. “These drivers currently outside of the U.S. will not be able to get back into the country for 90 days. That means they will not be able to earn a living and support their families—and of course they will be separated from their loved ones during that time.”

In response, Kalanick plans on compensating those drivers during the next three months to decrease the amount of stress the immigration ban will have on them. “We are working out a process to identify these drivers and compensate them pro bono during the next three months to help mitigate some of the financial stress and complications with supporting their families and putting food on the table. We will have more details on this in the coming days,” Kalanick said.
