Casting director, Jennifer Euston, later tweeted,  “Makes me sick there are producers who abuse their power & if there was a Casting Director present, they did nothing? Inexcusable.”

Flint Water Crisis: Several Michigan Health Officials Charged with Manslaughter

0

Several Michigan health officials charged with manslaughter over the Flint water crisis.

The Michigan attorney general’s office charged the director of the state’s health department along with four other public officials with involuntary manslaughter for their roles in the Flint water crisis.

The director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Nick Lyon, also faces a felony count of misconduct in office.

The Flint water crisis led to lead-tainted water that exposed thousands of young children to potential long-term health risks, the crisis has also been linked to an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease that contributed to over 10 deaths. Those cases ultimately led to charges on Wednesday for Lyon as well as the state’s chief medical executive Eden Wells, who also faces charges of obstruction of justice and lying to a police officer.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette also charged four other public office officials, with manslaughter. Officials charged include Stephen Busch, a water supervisor for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Darnell Earley who had been appointed by the state as the emergency manager for Flint, Howard Croft, the city’s former department director of public works, and Liane Shekter-Smith, who worked as the chief of the state’s Office of Drinking Water.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Lyon was aware of Legionnaires’ disease outbreak as soon as 2013 but, did not notify the public until a year later. Moreover, Lyon “willfully disregarded the deadly nature of the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak.” Lyon later added, “everyone has to die of something,” according to court documents.

In a statement, Gov. Rick Snyder defended Lyon and Wells, saying he has confidence and the two will remain employed at the health department.

“Nick Lyon has been a strong leader at the Department of Health and Human Services for the past several years and remains completely committed to Flint’s recovery,” Snyder said. “Director Lyon and Dr. Eden Wells, like every other person who has been charged with a crime by Bill Schuette, are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Some state employees were charged over a year ago and have been suspended from work since that time. They still have not had their day in court. That is not justice for Flint nor for those who have been charged.”

0

In Orlando, Florida the spa and showers at two LA Fitness clubs are now closed after reports of four different clients contracting Legionnaires’ disease. Now, health officials are looking into the reports.

Kent Donahue, a spokesman for the Florida Department of Health in Orange County, told the Orland Sentinel this week the three cases are linked to one club near Orlando, while another report of Legionnaires’ disease tied to a different facility.

Donahue says it is not certain how individuals contracted the illness or if the gym goers got sick by visiting the LA Fitness facilities. But all four people did visit the LA Fitness centers, and officials are not aware of any other commonalities.

As a precaution, LA Fitness has sent notices to customers last week warning them to monitor for signs of Legionnaires’ disease. Moreover, News 13 reports LA Fitness has closed the spa and showers at the two facilities.

This news comes after two guests who stayed separate at the Rio hotel-casino in Las Vegas, Nevada contracted Legionnaires’ disease. The Southern Nevada Health District is now investigating the situation.

Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria. People can contract the disease by inhaling aerosol droplets of water contaminated with the bacteria.

The disease is similar to other types of pneumonia. Symptoms include fever, headaches, muscle aches and shortness of breath.

Apple Confirms the Company is Working on Self-Driving Cars

0

Apple is developing artificial intelligence (AI) software to power self-driving cars.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed the company has been working on an Apple Car. While this is not the first time Apple talked about working on breaking into the car industry, it is a clear sign that Apple is expanding their reach in the tech industry.

Cook described Apple’s car project as a culmination of three different aspects including self-driving cars, electric vehicles, and ride-sharing. Together, those three factors could make the automobile industry even bigger.

That said, Cook says Apple is more focused on self-driving technology and not building a car.

“We’re focusing on… what we talked about we’re focusing on publicly is… We’re focusing on autonomous systems,” he said.

This interview confirms previous reports that the company has been focusing on building the software instead of manufacturing cars.

“Clearly, one purpose of autonomous systems is self-driving cars — there are others. And we sort of see it as the mother all AI projects,” Cook said to Bloomberg.

Cook added, “It’s probably one of the most difficult AI projects to work on. So autonomy is something that is incredibly exciting for us. But we’ll see where it takes us — we’re not really saying from a product point of view what we’ll do. It’s a core technology that we view as very important.”

It is important to note Apple received an autonomous vehicle test permit so that the company could start testing self-driving cars in California. So far, reports show Apple has been using a Lexus SUV to check their sensors and devices.

But, is it too late? Google has already released their self-driving technology company Waymo. In fact, on Monday Google’s Waymo retired their self-driving cars in favor of Minivans.

Uber CEO Takes Time Off Following Corporate Investigation

0

Since the #DeleteUber campaign went viral, the company’s CEO Travis Kalanick has been in the middle of a controversy with the enterprise and not to mention a tragic boating accident that occurred last month with this mother, the CEO of Uber is having a tough time.

Now, the CEO of Uber has told his time he will take time off for an unspecified amount of time.

According to reports, Kalanick told his team that, “During this interim period, the leadership team, my directs, will be running the company. I will be available as needed for the most strategic decisions, but I will be empowering them to be bold and decisive in order to move the company forward swiftly. It’s hard to put a timeline on this – it may be shorter or longer than we might expect.”

This news comes after former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder conducted an investigation into the company’s ethics and leadership issues, including sexual harassment and discrimination. Following the report, Holder suggested that when Kalanick returns, he should take a smaller role in the company. “Some of the responsibilities that Mr. Kalanick has historically possessed should be shared or given outright to other members of senior management,” the report outline said.

Moreover, Uber’s board of directors has also voted to adopt all of Holder’s recommendations, which the company shared with employees and public.

Uber conducted an internal investigation following allegations made by a former Uber engineer Susan Fowler, including that an Uber employee discriminated her based on her gender and the company ignored her repeated complaints of sexual harassment caused by her supervisor because he was a “high performer.”

Ultimately, the investigation illustrates Uber is focused on creating an internal change that will make it a more inclusive workplace environment.

So when will Kalanick be back? In his letter to his team, the CEO of Uber explains he will focus on his family and “Uber 2.0 real so that the world can see the inspired work all of you do, and the inspiring people that make Uber great.”

‘Pokemon Go’ Study Finds Only The Mobile App Only Provided Short Term Physical Health Benefits

0

Pokemon Go is an innovative take on a pop cultural hit animation series and mobile gaming applications. It provides challenges and motivates gamers to get out of the house. One of the things that made Pokemon Go so captivating was the potential health benefits associated with playing the game.

Initial research of how the game could be healthy for gamers painted an optimistic look at the future of gaming. However, a recent study published in the British Medical Journal suggests the exercise benefits did not last.

Researchers examined 1,000 people between the ages of 18 to 35 last summer and monitored their physical activity for six weeks. The initial results of the study were probing. However, following the first week, the physical activity began to fall off.

Jean-Philippe Chaput, a research scientist at Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, explained to CBS that Pokemon Go’s benefits are similar to many exercise trends.

“So yes, it worked for the first week, but then after a month and a half, people were not walking more or moving more,” Chaput explained.

“I think people look for a quick fix, so … they can lose weight quickly. We know that we have a lot of different kinds of diets and they don’t work.”

Chaput added, “So it means that [Pokemon Go] fits with all of the other physical programs — it works over the short term, but even after a month and a half it doesn’t work well … we can say that Pokemon Go is a fad as well.”

That said, that’s not to say that there are not health benefits to playing Pokemon Go. It is similar to any workout, it all about consistency.

0

Two guests who stayed separately at the Rio hotel-casino in Las Vegas Nevada have reportedly contracted Legionnaires’ disease. Now the Southern Nevada Health District is investigating the situation.

Rio hotel-casino is assisting int he investigation and taking steps to provide information to the past and future guests of the hotel. In a statement released on Friday, the Rio explained the presence of legionella bacteria.

“Test results on the water at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino indicated the presence of the legionella bacteria. The company is working closely with the Southern Nevada Health District and taking aggressive remediation actions to ensure the safety of Rio’s water. Out of an abundance of caution, we are relocating guests from rooms where remediation actions are being undertaken.”

Following the first report of the illness, Rio set up an environmental testing of their water system. After test results were completed, researchers found a presence of Legionella bacteria, and the hotel launched the appropriate response with a chlorine disinfection. Following reports of another case, the Southern Nevada Health District began sampling the water system and found Legionella bacteria.

The Health District reported they are working with Rio to address the issue and follow up with additional sampling to make sure remediation efforts are working.

In 2012, a guest at Las Vegas’s Luxor died of Legionnaires’ disease while several other people contracted the disease. Prior to the Luxor incident, in 2011 at least six people contracted the disease.

What is Legionnaires’ disease?

Legionnaires Disease

Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria. Individuals can contract the disease by inhaling aerosol droplets of water contaminated with the bacteria.

Legionnaires’ disease is similar to other types of pneumonia. Symptoms include fever, headaches, muscle aches and shortness of breath. Legionnaires’ symptoms typically start within 2 to 10 days following exposure to the bacteria. That said, individuals who are at risk of contracting the disease should monitor their health for at least two weeks after getting exposed to the bacteria.

Individuals who are at risk of contracting the disease include men and women over the ages of 50, smokers, individuals with weakened immune systems, and individuals with illnesses such as liver failure, diabetes or kidney failure.

Is Legionnaires’ disease deadly?

Many people who are exposed with Legionella will not get sick. That said, it can cause severe illness and sometimes can result in death.
