Study: Subway’s Chicken Has 50% Chicken DNA

0

50 percent of the DNA in the chicken used in Subway sandwiches comes from a chicken, according to a new study. Researchers say that the number should be 100 percent if it is chicken.

CBC did a DNA test of chicken from various fast-food restaurants in Canada and found most of the restaurants contained approximately 100 percent chicken DNA, except for Subway. For example, McDonald’s Country Chicken had an average of 84.9 percent chicken DNA and Wendy’s Grilled Chicken Sandwich had an average of 88.5 percent Chicken DNA.

Meanwhile, the results of the study found Subway’s oven-roasted chicken contained 53.6% chicken DNA. Meanwhile, Subway’s chicken strips only had 42.8% chicken DNA. The rest of it contained soy DNA.

Researchers were so surprised by the DNA results they checked the Subway chicken twice. In a statement, Subway Canada disagreed with the findings and claimed that their chicken is “100% white meat” with 1% or less of soy ingredients.

“Our chicken strips and oven roasted chicken contain 1% or less of soy protein,” Subway explained in a statement. “We use this ingredient in these products as a means to help stabilize the texture and moisture. All of our chicken items are made from 100% white meat chicken which is marinated, oven roasted and grilled.”

Subway added, “We tested our chicken products recently for nutritional and quality attributes and found it met our food quality standards. We will look into this again with our supplier to ensure that the chicken is meeting the high standard we set for all of our menu items and ingredients.”

Overall, researchers argued that fast food chicken has 25% less protein than you would receive from chicken cooked at home. Also, the levels of sodium were seven to 10 times higher than “unadulterated chicken.”

Update (Wednesday, May 17, 2017): Subway has issued a statement on the investigation.

Independent Labs Discredit Canadian Story on Subway Chicken

Two independent laboratories testing Subway® chicken have found that alleged test results broadcast on Feb. 24 by the Canadian Television show, Marketplace, were false and misleading.

Test results from laboratories in Canada and the U.S. clearly show that the Canadian chicken products tested had only trace amounts of soy, contradicting the accusations made during the broadcast of CBC Marketplace.

Subway representatives immediately contacted the program and the lab that conducted the tests to inquire about the methodology and the testing process. The program and the lab declined to engage with Subway except to share the results. In response, Subway sent samples of the Canadian products that Marketplace claimed contained 50% soy protein to Maxxam Analytics in Canada and Elisa Technologies, Inc., in Florida.

The results from both labs found soy protein below 10 ppm, or less than 1%, in all tested samples. These findings are consistent with the low levels of soy protein that we add with the spices and marinade to help keep the products moist and flavorful.

“The stunningly flawed test by Marketplace is a tremendous disservice to our customers. The safety, quality and integrity of our food is the foundation of our business. That’s why we took extra caution to test and retest the chicken. Our customers can have confidence in our food. The allegation that our chicken is only 50% chicken is 100% wrong,” said SUBWAY President and CEO Suzanne Greco.

Dave Theno, Subway’s Chief of Food Safety & Quality, said, ” Our chicken is 100% white meat with seasonings, marinated, cooked and delivered to our restaurants. The chicken has no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. Through years of testing, we’ve never seen results like the program claimed.”

Subway has shared the results of the independent tests with Marketplace and the lab that conducted the flawed test. The company is demanding a retraction and apology.

Uber CEO Gets in Argument with Uber Driver Over Lower Fees

0

Uber CEO TRavis Kalanick is worth over $6 billion but, money can not buy you solutions to solve the countless problems the company is currently facing. Now, Kalanick has a new problem, a viral video.

Bloomberg has obtained footage of Kalanick getting into an argument with an Uber driver.

Uber has had a tough year, from sexual harassment allegations to a boycott campaign against the ride-sharing company. Now, a video has surfaced showing the company’s CEO getting into a heated argument with an Uber driver.

The video, which was recorded by driver Fawzi Kamel, shows Kalanick sitting between two women. Then, about four minutes into the video, his friends exit the car and Kamel starts talking with Kalanick.

Kalanick tells Kamel that Uber had to lower prices or the company would go out of business.

“No, no no. You misunderstand me. We started high-end. We didn’t go low-end because we wanted to. We went low-end because we had to because we’d be out of business,” Kalanick said.

“What? Lyft? It’s a piece of cake right there,” Kamel replied.

“It seems like a piece of cake because I’ve beaten them. But if I didn’t do the things I did, we would have been beaten, I promise,” Kalanick responded.

Kamel argues Kalanick that he lost $97,000 and is “bankrupt” because of Uber’s business strategy. His situation is pretty common among Uber drivers. In fact, a Bloomberg report last January reported some Uber drivers are now sleeping in their cars, and the company has continuously started cutting fares to the point where some drivers make less than $10 an hour.

Kalanick eventually exits the car telling Kamel that “Some people don’t like to take responsibility for their own s***.” They blame everything in their life on somebody else. Good luck!”

Kalanick sent an email to Uber staff and posted a statement about the video on their website.

“By now I’m sure you’ve seen the video where I treated an Uber driver disrespectfully,” Travis Kalanick said. “To say that I am ashamed is an extreme understatement. My job as your leader is to lead…and that starts with behaving in a way that makes us all proud. That is not what I did, and it cannot be explained away.”

Kalanick added, “It’s clear this video is a reflection of me—and the criticism we’ve received is a stark reminder that I must fundamentally change as a leader and grow up. This is the first time I’ve been willing to admit that I need leadership help and I intend to get it.”

“I want to profoundly apologize to Fawzi, as well as the driver and rider community, and to the Uber team”

YouTube is Going After Live TV with YouTube TV

0

YouTube is tackling TV. Following in the footsteps of Hulu, Apple, and other streaming companies, YouTube is going after cable television.

For $35 a month you can obtain a TV package that includes all the major news channels, ESPN, USA, FX, Oxygen, E!, Disney Channel, National Geographic, and not to mention, local TV channels. Also, YouTubers can add TV channels such as Showtime,  an unlimited cloud-based DVR with unlimited storage and six accounts.

Essentially, YouTube TV will allow you the ability to live and record content from major TV network. Also, all of this content will be featured alongside YouTube’s pre-existing content and will work on nearly any TV screen that has the YouTube app.

The new service will be available later on this year and set for early spring. There is no contract, and six users can access the content at any time.

That said, there are a lot of major networks missing from the list. Most popular channels including The Walking Dead’s AMC, TBS, and TNT. Also, CNN is absent from the list. Meanwhile, Sony Playstation Vue includes CNN, TBS, TNT, and AMC.

YouTube TV will also be able to connect with Google’s internet of things device Google Home, so you will be able to ask Home to start playing a show on your television.

The mobile app will also include three main features including live, library and home. The live tab will show you everything that is currently broadcasting on the respective network. If you want to watch a particular show, you can just tap, and it will begin to play. If you want to look at a show later, you can click the plus icon, and the will start recording a show. YouTube TV will also harness Google artificial intelligence technology, and users will be able to see recommendations underneath the current video they are watching.

WHO: 12 Bacteria That Pose Greatest Risk to Human Health

0

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced twelve types of bacteria that are considered “priorities” and in need of new antibiotics to treat.

The priorities list is the first time WHO released a list of bacteria strains the health community should become aware of and research a treatment plan to combat what experts believe as the greatest threats to humanity. The WHO is hoping governments and pharmaceutical companies will concentrate on developing new drugs to treat people who become infected.

How the WHO determined which bacteria posed the greatest risk included analyzing their resistance to current antibiotics, how likely someone will die once infected with the bacteria, how common they are, and how it can impact health care around the world.

The WHO categorized the bacteria into three different types of categories including critical, high and medium priority. The top three bacteria listed under the priority section do not have an antibiotic to treat someone who becomes infected.

At the top of the list included “Gram Negative” bacteria including Aciento baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosin, which are linked to hospital infections, where medical equipment has the propensity of becoming contaminated.

E.coli, a type of Enterobacteriaceae, was also listed by the World Health Organization. Also, Streptococcus pneumoniae, a type of bacteria that infects the respiratory tract and nasal cavity, was also listed a priority.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4 percent of hospital patients are estimated to acquire an infection from the medical facility.

The growing concern is the number of bacteria strains that are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics. According to WHO, drug-resistant bacteria are expected to be the cause of 700,000 deaths every year. In fact, researchers suspect drug-resistant bacteria, like those named in the “priorities” list by WHO, will kill 10 million people in the next 33 years.

Best Picture Confusion: Here’s What Really Happened at the Oscars

0

The cause for the Best Picture Oscar confusion was an envelope error. Pricewaterhouse Coopers, the accounting firm that has accounted votes for the Oscars for years, announced on Sunday night that they messed up. Evidently, someone gave Warren Beatty the wrong envelope.

“We sincerely apologize to “Moonlight,” “La La Land,” Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar® viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture, Pricewaterhouse Coopers explained in a statement. “The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.”

Somehow, Beatty was handed the wrong envelope. Apparently, Beatty had been given the envelope for Best Actress, which was announced earlier in the evening.

The rest of the story is history. The La La Land cast and crew walked on stage and started to give their speeches, then a producer ran and told them they had lost and Moonlight was the real winner.

Moonlight filmed in Miami, Florida in 2015 and premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in September. The movie has earned over $25 million worldwide. By the end of the Oscars, Moonlight won Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Moonlight is a coming of age story of an African-American man going through three different stages of life including being a young boy, teenager and finally as an adult.

Meanwhile, La La Land centers around an aspiring actress who falls in love with a musician. Ultimately, the Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone starring motion picture won six Academy Awards including Best Director, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song and Best Production Design.

Trump Announces He Will Not Attend the White House Correspondents’ Dinner

President Trump will not attend the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, which is scheduled for April 29th. Trump revealed his decision on Twitter Saturday afternoon saying, “I will not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner this year. Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!”

Following Trump’s announcement, the president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, issued a statement that dinner would continue even without the President’s attendance, the Washington Post reports.

President Trump has had an increasingly difficult relationship with the media and press. Since Trump became President,  he has frequently lambasted several major news outlets including calling CNN “fake news.” Also, earlier this month Trump called the media “the enemy of the American people,” during a campaign rally in Florida.

Moreover, the White House blocked several media outlets including CNN and the New York Times from attending a press briefing.

The White House Correspondents’ Association is a group of journalists who cover the White House and the President. The White House Correspondents’ Dinner started in 1920, and over fifteen presidents have attended at least one dinner starting with Calvin Coolidge in 1924. The Washington Post reports the White House Correspondents’ Association awards $100,000 in scholarships and has recently launched a mentoring program for aspiring journalists.

Trump has attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in the past. In 2011, former President Barack Obama poked fun at Trump at the dinner with five minutes of jokes directed at the then-star of Celebrity Apprentice.

“For example, no seriously, just recently in an episode of ‘Celebrity Apprentice,’ at the steakhouse, the men’s cooking team did not impress the judges from Omaha Steaks,” Obama said. “And there was a lot of blame to go around but you, Mr. Trump, recognized that the problem was a lack of leadership and so ultimately you didn’t blame Little John or Meatloaf — you fired Gary Busey. And these are the kinds of decisions that would keep me up at night. Well-handled, sir. Well-handled.”

Cloudflare Bug Leak May Have Revealed Thousands of Passwords For Months

0

You may want to change your passwords after Cloudflare reveals a problem with their coding may have leaked out private information to the public.

The bug could have released private customer information including passwords, cookies and other personal details from several major websites over the past few months.

Cloudflare, which manages 10% of all Internet traffic, helps companies and website by providing web performance and security tools. But, the Chicago Tribune reports personal information of customers tied to Cloudflare’s clients including Uber, FitBit, and OkCupid, have been affected by the bug.

Now called “Cloudbleed,” the Chicago Tribune reports that Cloudflare has been leaking customer’s information for several months.

Google security expert Tavis Ormandy discovered the leak after personal information was picked up by search engines.

Cloudflare did not reveal a list of the websites affected but, the company did say that it was not widespread incident.

In a statement, Cloudflare explained that the biggest leak took place between February 13th and February 18th affecting “1 in every 3,300,000 HTTP requests through Cloudflare.”

“Because of the seriousness of such a bug, a cross-functional team from software engineering, infosec and operations formed in San Francisco and London to fully understand the underlying cause, to understand the effect of the memory leakage, and to work with Google and other search engines to remove any cached HTTP responses,” Cloudflare explained in their statement.

The company asserts it is committed to fixing this issue. “Having a global team meant that, at 12-hour intervals, work was handed over between offices enabling staff to work on the problem 24 hours a day.”

The service added, “The team has worked continuously to ensure that this bug and its consequences are fully dealt with.”

Several search engines have attempted to removing user’s sensitive information affected by the leak. However, there is still some private details online.

Intense Workouts May Hurt Your Sex Life

0

Is your workout routine hurting your sex life?

A new study from the University of North Carolina published this week in the Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise found men who have intense exercise routines may have a lower sex drive, also known as libido, than men who do not exercise as hard.

Researchers examined over 1,000 active men and surveyed their workouts and their sex drives. Scientists split the participants into separate groups based upon how long they worked, the intensity of their workouts and their libido levels. When researchers compared the results, scientists found that those who reported light or moderate exercises were more likely to have a higher libido than men who had intense workout sessions.

Researchers in the study argue that the survey is self-reported, which could skew the results of the survey and may not be entirely accurate. However, it is just a survey that suggests a correlation between intense workouts and lower libidos.

However, researchers told the New York Times that men who have intense workouts may be too tired or may experience a drop in testosterone levels. “But there does seem be a potential tipping point,” researchers explained in the study.

Exercise and Libido

A 1986 landmark study published in the Journal of Animal Science examined how a regular exercise regiment affected the libido in horses. After 32 weeks, researchers found that animals that exercised regularly had a lower libido than horses that did not. Researchers explained in their study, “mean libido scores of the non-exercised group were higher than exercised stallions after 12 wk of forced daily exercise.”

But, not exercising may have a long term problem. Recent research has shown obese men who have children are more likely to have kids with social developmental problems.
