WhatsApp Releases Their Version of Snapchat Stories

0

When Instagram copied Snapchat’s Stories feature last August, a report found Snapchat’s growth stalled by over 80%. Now, Facebook’s WhatsApp is releasing their version of Snapchat Stories.

On Monday, WhatsApp, a company Facebook owns, became the latest application to launch their version of the stories feature and they are calling it WhatsApp Status.

Instead of users posting a status message, the new feature will allow users to share photos and videos that last for up to 24 hours. The videos can last for 45 seconds, not just 10 seconds, and status updates are only shared within Whatsapp users’ address book and not followers you may not know, like Instagram.

But, that’s not all. WhatsApp’s version of Stories allows for users to share GIFS as a status message.

This news comes after Snapchat announced Spectacles are now available for sale to Snapchat users the country as the company prepares for their IPO. But, as the company pointed out their paperwork for their highly-anticipated initial public offering, the camera company said their biggest competitor was Facebook. “We face significant competition in almost every aspect of our business both domestically and internationally,” Snap Inc explained. Not to mention, the company pointed out that their competition “mimic our products and therefore harm our user engagement and growth.”

“We face significant competition in almost every aspect of our business both domestically and internationally,” Snap Inc explained. Not to mention, the company pointed out that their competition “mimic our products and therefore harm our user engagement and growth.”

But, these new features implemented by WhatsApp should not become a surprise. Last December, Instagram’s product manager Kevin Weil said the company “built on a format that Snapchat invented.” Weil added, “It’s a format, [and] we believe that format will be universal.”

40% of a Child’s Weight is Linked to Their Parents, Study Finds

0

Research has shown that children with obese parents suffer from mental and motor difficulties, but a new study published in the Journal of Economics and Human Biology suggests being overweight can have a significant impact on a child’s weight.

University of Sussex researchers found that between 35 to 40 percent of fat or thin a child is linked their parents’ genes. Scientists also found a high correlation between obese children and their parents suggesting 55 to 60% of obesity is genetically related.

Moreover, scientists report 20% of a child’s body mass index (BMI) is linked to the mother, while the other 20% was due to the father.

Researchers were able to reach these results by examining the height and weight of over 100,000 children and their parents from across the world.

Lead author, Peter Dolton, an economics professor at the University of Sussex released a statement about the study saying, “This gives an important and rare insight into how obesity is transmitted across generations in both developed and developing countries.”

Dolton added, “We found that the process of intergenerational transmission is the same across all the different countries.”

Obesity is linked to an extensive list of health problems including diabetes and cancer. Previous studies have shown even weekend workouts are beneficial to an individual’s health. But, the study suggests that healthy habits can only do so much.

Dolton explained, “These findings have far-reaching consequences for the health of the world’s children. They should make us rethink the extent to which obesity is the result of family factors, and our genetic inheritance, rather than decisions made by us as individuals.”

A study published earlier this year found obese parents lead to child development issues. Published in the journal of “Pediatrics” researchers found children from obese mothers were more likely to have problems with their fine motor skills. Also, children of obese fathers were also more likely to have issues with problem-solving tasks, and challenges interacting with others.

The live press conference will take place on February 22nd at 1 P.M. EST. The event will be streamed live on NASA’s TV station and their website. Researchers, scientists, and astronomers will be attending the press event. Also, NASA will answer questions on social media when users use the hashtag #AskNASA during the conference. Also, the agency will hold an Ask Me Anything on Reddit, following the briefing.

This news comes after NASA announced the winners of the “space poop” challenge. Scientists, physicians, and engineer were rewarded for their creative ideas on how to poop in a space. While it may sound ridiculous, it is rather difficult to do in space when there is no gravity. NASA called for people to create an innovative way to fix the problem. One of the solutions included using catheters and compartments to collect and store the waste.

Kris Jenner: Filming Was “Therapeutic” for Kim Kardashian After the Paris Robbery

0

The upcoming season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians is only days away. In preparation for the upcoming new season of the hit reality drama, Kim Kardashian is seen recounting what happened to her during the Paris Robbery – where several men broke into her room, held her at gunpoint, and robbed her of millions of dollars worth of jewelry.

While Kris Jenner, the executive producer behind Keeping Up with the Kardashian, has seen the interview, she says she still has not finished watching it.

During an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show, Jenner explained, “I just saw some of it. I couldn’t even watch the whole thing it was so upsetting. It was such an upsetting time, and something so awful happened to somebody you love so much. And it’s just like — ugh — it chokes me up every time to think about it.”

Jenner added, “Like, I get choked up just thinking about it and talking about it. But it’s remarkable to listen to her tell the story, and she does that, moment by moment.”

Kris Jenner explains that the details of the Paris Robbery do not air until the second half of KUWTK. However, Jenner revealed filming helped Kardashian recover from the incident.

“When we started filming again and getting up and running, you know obviously Kim was around because we all practically live together on the street,” Jenner explained. “And we started filming and what was coming out of that was very therapeutic for her, I think. To just explain to us and walk us through.”

Jenner added, “She just thinks that it might bring some awareness. You know, it’s changed the way we live our lives and just the way we take care of our kids and our grandchildren. So it’s been a process.”

After the Paris Night robbery, Kim Kardashian stopped filming on the show and posted very few photos on social media. However, months after the incident, Kim Kardashian has slowly resurfaced to the public limelight.

Also, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have moved out of Kris Jenner’s home. “They moved to their home in Bel-Air. I said to her, ‘I kind of forgot you had a house across town. You should have been living there the whole time!’

This news comes after photos of the Paris night robbery surfaced online revealing the location, evidence, and details from the evening Kim Kardashian was duct-taped and robbed.

Uber CEO Launches Investigation After Sexual Harassment Accusations

0

Fresh on the heels of the #DeleteUber hashtag went viral, Susan Fowler, a woman working for Uber from November 2015 to December 16, has revealed her alleged experiences of sexual harassment and discrimination while she worked at the ride-sharing company.

Following the report, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick ordered an “urgent investigation” into Fowler’s accusations. Also, Kalanick promises to fire anyone who allowed for the sexual harassment to occur at the company.

Fowler, who worked as a site reliability engineer at Uber, said that on her first day at work her manager sexually harassed her.

“My new manager sent me a string of messages over company chat. He was in an open relationship, he said, and his girlfriend was having an easy time finding new partners but he wasn’t,” Fowler explained. He was trying to stay out of trouble at work, he said, but he couldn’t help getting in

“He was trying to stay out of trouble at work, he said, but he couldn’t help getting in trouble, because he was looking for women to have sex with.”

Fowler then took screenshots of the messages and told Uber’s Human Resources department. However, she was told “Even though this was clearly sexual harassment,” it was his “first offense.” As a result, the HR department said, “they wouldn’t feel comfortable giving him anything other than a warning and a stern talking-to.”

Fowler explained HR told her she could transfer to a different team or stay on the same team as the manager that sexually harassed her. However, HR told her if she did stay, to expect him to give her a “poor performance review.”

Fowler then explained, “One HR rep even explicitly told me that it wouldn’t be retaliation if I received a negative review later because I had been ‘given an option.’”

Fowler learned that the manager had done the same thing with other women but, the HR department told all of the women he would not get disciplined because it was his “first offense.”

Fowler added that the company is a “game-of-thrones political war” within the company undergoing “complete, unrelenting chaos.”

Fowler also explained another incident where she a manager discriminated her and other women working at Uber. Uber ordered over a hundred jackets for men, but none for women because only six employees were working at the company. Managers told the women if they wanted a leather jacket, then they would have to “to find jackets that were the same price as the bulk order price of the men’s jackets.”

Fowler explained throughout her experiences at Uber she continued to show “proof” to the company’s HR department including emails and screenshots. Ultimately, an HR rep suggested that Fowler was “the common theme” in all the reports. However, Fowler said Uber never documented a single complaint she had with the company. Also, HR told her she was on “very thin ice” for reporting his manager to HR. As a result, Fowler contacted the Chief Technology Officer, but the company did not do anything because the manager was reportedly a “higher performer.”

Fowler ultimately left the job.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick has ordered an investigation into the sexual harassment and discrimination complaints calling them “abhorrent and against everything we believe in.”
