Study: Long-Term Effects of Gastric Bypass in Teens

0

While obesity is a major epidemic in America especially, among children and young adults, not too much is known about the impact of bariatric surgery on teens. However, a new study published in “The Lancet: Diabetes & Endocrinology” examined the impact of bariatric surgery on adolescents.

Dr. Thomas H. Inge, MD and his team of researchers discovered that gastric bypass surgery among adolescents resulted in long-term health benefits and weight loss.

Researchers examined the benefits of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass of 58 young adults around the age of 17. The results of their study saw a body mass index decrease of about 30%. However, approximately 48% of the 58 patients studied exhibited mild anaemia, 45% had hyperparathyroidism, and 16% had low amounts of vitamin B12.

Dr. Inge explained in his study that after gastric bypass surgery adolescents should focus on dietary supplements. In addition, researchers also assert physicians should monitor micronutrients following gastric bypass surgery among adolescents.

This news comes after recent research on gastric bypass surgery found many individuals exhibited digestive problems following the surgery. Researchers examined over 200 obese patients who underwent laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery. They discovered that over 70% of the patients in the study had complained of indigestion and problems eating foods with high fat or high sugar content. In addition, those same patients  also had issues eating red meat.

In America, the average weight of kids has increased by more than ten pounds within the past 30 years. Now, one in three children are currently overweight or obese. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health published a study in ‘The Lancet’ arguing that energy-rich and nutrient-poor foods promote weight gain in early childhood. In turn, leading to chronic health issues among teens and adolescents.

How can parents prevent kids from becoming overweight? The NIH suggests that activities should be promoted to improve children’s health, avoiding high sugar beverages and avoiding sedentary activities.

NASA is Planning Two Asteroid Missions

0

While the recently released movie Hidden Figures cinematically recreated the early days of NASA and space exploration, the government space program is now working on their next space mission: Lucy and Psyche.

NASA announced in a statement their plan on to explore our solar system. The first mission is called “Lucy”. The mission is to explore the diversity of asteroids that have existed for over 10 million years. The mission will use remote sensing tools to map the physical properties of a group of primitive asteroids. The goal of the space mission is to to better understand the origins of our solar system.

The second mission is called “Psyche”. Psyche is the name of an asteroid orbiting between Mars and Jupiter. A spacecraft will arrive in 2030 and will travel to the asteroid exploring the geology, surface, and other physical traits of the asteroid. The goal of this mission to understand how planets and other spacely bodies were created.

Lead Psyche researcher Lindy Elkins-Tanton of Arizona State University explained in a statement that, Psyche will allow scientists to “learn inner space by visiting outer space.”

It’s not a surprise that NASA is focusing their attention on asteroids. Last month, NASA researchers explained that the world currently does not have a plan on stopping asteroids from colliding into our planet. In fact, researchers argue that every 60 million years there is a chance of a major asteroid or comet collision an ‘extinction level’ event.

While the odds of this happening are highly unlikely, President Obama released a plan to stop an asteroid from crashing into planet Earth earlier this month. The program was called ‘National Near Earth Object Preparedness Strategy’ and will prevent “Near Earth Objects” from crashing into our planet. A report on how to prepare the Earth from an asteroid or comet is expected to be released shortly, followed by triennial updates.

Amazon Will Soon Accept Food Stamps

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on Thursday several companies will soon be able to receive food stamps as a form of payment. One of these companies involved in the pilot program includes the online mega retailer, Amazon.

While, Amazon is working on delivering cashier less grocery stores, the USDA is working on making it easier for low income individuals to make purchases online.

The USDA included seven different retail firms that were now in part of a pilot program that allows for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP, to purchase groceries via the Internet. So when will food stamps beneficiaries be able to purchase their groceries online? Well, according to the USDA press release, the program will start this summer.

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack explained that ecommerce can help many SNAP participants make healthier choices. Especially, those living in urban and rural communities were access to fruits and vegetables can be a problem.

“We’re looking forward to being able to bring the benefits of the online market to low-income Americans participating in SNAP,” Tom Vilsack added.

Starting this summer, Amazon will be able to receive food stamps from low-income individuals in Maryland, New Jersey, and New York. Other companies participating in the pilot program include FreshDirect, Safeway, ShopRite, Hy-Vee, Inc, Hart’s Local Grocers and Dash’s Market.

The program will tested in New York, Maryland, Oregon, Washington, Pennsylvania and Iowa.

The USDA explains that this new pilot program will examine the benefits of online ordering and payments. The government agency argues that there are many security challenges, which will need to be addressed before it is available around the country. In addition, the SNAP program will only let low-income beneficiaries to purchase SNAP authorized products. Not to mention, SNAP will not pay for delivery or service charges.

With that being said, the USDA plans on implementing this program nationwide for SNAP beneficiaries, once the pilot program is completed and current unforeseen problems are addressed.

In many rural and urban areas access to healthy food options is a problem, which can contribute to obesity and other health issues. In order to combat this issue, the USDA spent nearly $20 million to help low-income families purchase healthy produce. The grant program was aimed to increase the purchase of healthy foods in low income areas. Since President Obama took office, Visack explained previous programs helped nearly 8 million SNAP beneficiaries purchase fruits and vegetables,

SNAP was created to help stop Americans from going hungry. Currently, the SNAP program helps millions of families with nearly 50% of all SNAP participants being children.

Facebook Taps CNN’s Campbell Brown to Head News Division

In an effort to take the rise of false news stories, Facebook has decided to hire Campbell Brown to head its newly created news division. The decision to hire Mrs. Brown, who had previously worked for NBS news and is currently a host on CNN, was announced on Friday.

The move is part of a series of corrective actions stemming from the unfettered rise of false and misleading stories on the social network. This came to a head following last year’s election as many pundits called out Facebook for not taking a more active role in debunking, or at a minimum, minimizing the impact of such stories.

While the company can do little to stop the posting of false stories on its social network, many have pointed out that it can make sure such stories are not promoted. In December, Facebook announced it would enact a system to gauge the authenticity of news stories posted on the site.

Regardless of the election, false and misleading stories have been a sore spot for some time. During the Christmas holiday, a seemingly credible story about a bomb attack in Bangkok, Thailand triggered Facebook’s Safety Check algorithm. The story was later proven to be baseless and the company is considering ways to improve Safety Check.

What does Campbell Brown mean for Facebook?

While The New York Times has reported that Facebook does have several professional journalists on its payroll, the hiring of Mrs. Brown marks the first time that the company has set up a news division. However, company representatives, note that Mrs. Brown was not brought on to the company to act and an editor, but rather to help Facebook cooperate with new organizations. It is believed that this will help the company to balance its increasingly vital role as a news source, with its original purpose as a social media network.

Mrs. Brown has gained notoriety for her reporting on school choice, particularly her support for charter schools and her battles with teacher unions over her positions.  While Mrs. Brown is a former Republican strategist, she has been openly critical of President-elect Donald Trump.

Ultimately the decision to hire Mrs. Brown is an attempt to reshape Facebook’s role as a trusted news source for is more than 1.8 billion users. This includes looking at paid placement of false or misleading stories which have increased in frequency and in popularity in recent years.

Wikileaks Wants to Use A.I. To Track Verified Twitter Accounts

Wikileaks is considering tracking the personal details of Twitter users with a verified Twitter account.

Wikileaks’ Task Force Twitter page, posted on Twitter saying “We are thinking of making an online database with all ‘verified’ twitter accounts & their family/job/financial/housing relationships,” the task force said on Twitter on Friday. In another tweet the organization said, “We are looking for clear discrete (father/shareholding/party membership) variables that can be put into our AI software.”

After several retweets, the task force elaborated by saying, “We are looking for clear discrete (father/shareholding/party membership) variables that can be put into our AI software. Other suggestions?”

Like many social media platforms, Twitter gives verified accounts a blue check to show other Twitter users that the company has identified and verified the account’s information. It’s mostly seen and used by writers, authors, celebrities, politicians and musicians. However, Twitter recently expanded the program to make it easier for people to get verified.

Ultimately, Wikileaks explained that they are looking to find “relationships” between people. They will accomplish this by using their artificial intelligence programming.

Meanwhile, Julian Assange and his task force are in the middle of a Russian hack contention between the CIA, NSA, Donald Trump, and Wikileaks.

Their leader, Julian Assange, is responsible for leaking private e-mails from the Democratic Party. In fact, over the course of several weeks nearly 20,000 different hacked e-mails were published by organization just days before the election. Now, Wikileaks is the center of a highly contentious Russian hack scandal. While, Assange argues that his source for the e-mails is not connected to the Russian government. However, several intelligence reports assert that Russia was behind the hack and shared the information with Assange’s organization.

Regulatory Filings Show Apple Executives Take a Pay Cut For 2016

0

While many observers would describe 2016 as a good year for Apple, it turns out that it was not good enough. In fact, the company missed many of its internal targets and several key executives were forced to take a pay cut. Fortunately for them, the miss has done little to curtail the company’s share price which was trading near five-year highs on Friday afternoon at $118.

Based on regulatory filings, Apple posted sales of just under $216 billion for 2016, with a net operating profit of $60 billion. While this might not seem too shabby, the filings noted that this was below internal targets for the company – these targets have not been released to the public.

Some analysts believe reasons for the miss include lower than expected sales of the Apple Watch and consumer apathy towards the iPhone. The phone was a big deal when it was first released in January 2007, but since then consumers have come to take it for granted.

Another issue is the increased competition in the smartphone space.  While the iPhone revolutionized the category, leading the eventual exit of Blackberry and Nokia, the space has become increasingly commoditized.  This has impacted Apple’s market share and today Samsung holds the upper hand in the global smartphone market.

The importance of the iPhone to Apple’s success cannot be underestimated.  The product catapulted the company to become the most valuable company by market capitalization. It is also an extremely profitable product line and this has helped Apple to post quarterly profit numbers which smashed records for public companies anywhere.

The iPhone’s magic has begun to wane in recent years and in 2016 sales fell by nearly 8 percent. This represented a nearly 28 percent reversal from 2016 sales growth and was the first-time Apple sales had dropped in 15 years.

In statements regarding the cut in executive pay, the company noted that 2015 was a ‘record-breaking year’ and that performance for 2016 was ‘below the target performance goals set by the Compensation Committee’.

While this meant that top executives would receive a pay cut, their overall compensation remained hefty. The filings noted that Apple CEO, Tim Cook, was due to receive nearly $8.7 million including salary and bonuses. Not bad for a year’s work and Mr. Cook benefited from more than $130 million in stock options vesting last year – stock options are a big part of compensation at Apple.

In the end, 2016 remained a good year for Apple and the company remains tremendously profitable. In addition, the company has nearly $53 billion in free cash flow on hand.  Given this envious position, it is highly likely that Apple will begin committing some of this case to develop new products or services to expand its reach.  Some possibilities include a major push into China or the enterprise market in the U.S.  Some analysts have also speculated that Apple might pursue investments in services or entertainment as this would be a logical extension of its current portfolio.

Humanity Would End in 100 Days After a Zombie Epidemic, Study Says

0

Millions of people turn on their TVs every Sunday to watch and see what will happen on the next episode of The Walking Dead.

But, could humanity survive the zombie apocalypse? Well, researchers at the University of Leicester have studied the “zombie epidemic” and published a new study in the “Journal of Physics Special Topics”.

According to the study, researchers from the Department of Physics and Astronomy discovered that by the 100th day the surviving population would only be around 100 to 200 people.

How did researchers discover this? Well, C.T. Davis and his team of researchers investigated the spread of a hypothetical zombie virus after it has infected one person by using the SIR model – an epidemiological model that calculates the theoretical number of people who will become infected with a contagious disease.

Zombie epidemic

It is important to point out that this study had many assumptions. For example, researchers explained that they assumed the hypothetical zombie virus would turn each person into the undead with a 90% probability. In addition, they did not take into account natural births and deaths. Also, researchers argued that each soul less corpse will be able to find a new person to infect every day. Nor, did the researchers assume the possibility that humans would be able to kill zombies. Consequently, the final number of 100 to 200 people at the end of the day may be very low.

Could a zombie apocalypse really happen?

In the study, Hungry and angry: could we survive a zombie apocalypse? published in the journal “The Lancet Neurology” neurologists examined pop cultural undead and correlated with different parts of the brain. Researchers explained in essence that some of the prime motivations such as hunger and rage could be attributed to a dysfunction within the orbitofrontal cortex. Or, an overactive amygdala, hypothalamus, and thalamus and a malfunctioning hormonal system.

And while a “zombie virus” has never been discovered. In New York City, researchers recently found synthetic marijuana to be the cause to the “zombie outbreak”. Moreover, 30 people were hospitalized after smoking store bought synthetic cannabinoids.

December was a Record Month for Apple’s App Store

0

December was a banner month for Apple’s App Store both in the U.S. and in China. When talking to Verge on Wednesday, Phil Schiller, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple, noted the App Store has more than $3 billion in review in December alone. This total included subscription fees, in-app purchases, and paid downloads. 2016 was a big year for the App Store. Revenue for the year was up nearly 40 percent over 2015. But December’s tally of $3 billion total represented a big chunk of the $20 billion collected last year.

It turns out the U.S. was not the only growth market for the App Store in December. According to reports, the App Store for the mainland China market was up roughly 90 percent from December 2015. The growth highlights an important opportunity for Apple which has long sought to gain inroads in the fast-developing market with more than 1 billion potential users.

Apple’s path to success in China has been an arduous one and even with the App Store growth the company still has a way to go. One of the challenges has been battery issues which first popped up on Chinese social media last year. Another challenge is how Apple can supplant the dominance of local handset makers – many of whom are now beginning to compete with the company on a global stage.

In the end, the growth of App Store revenue has a tremendous impact on the company’s top, and bottom, lines. Analysts believe the App Store helped to add anywhere between $4 to $8.6 billion in revenue in 2016 alone – the variance is due to licensing fees, etc. This does not consider the carried interest which Apple generates from the massive overnight balances it carries on the fees it collects from users.

Granted, the clear majority of apps are free but in-app purchases have become increasingly commonplace. Another revenue generation opportunity are fees collected for subscriptions, such as the streaming of music and sports content among other things.

Pokemon Go

Looking back at 2016, it was not surprising that Pokémon Go was the most downloaded app of the year. The app took off like a rocket in June, breaking records for downloads.  While it has set an interesting precedent for Augmented Reality (AR) app in gaming and in other categories, active daily users have waned in recent months.

In some ways, this is to be expected as the groundswell which propelled the app last summer was likely to burn out after a while. However, the game remains one of the most downloaded apps and is should remain popular for the foreseeable future.

Speaking on the future of the App Store, Mr. Schiller noted that the company is also focusing on targeted advertising and search suggestions. Not only will this help app developers to gain exposure, but it is a way to continue revenue growth.

Shares of Apple were up 0.44 percent in morning trade on Thursday at $116.54.

AI Is Quickly Becoming Big Business at Google and IBM

Reports surfaced in China on Thursday that Google’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) research group has again beat some of the best Go players in an online tournament. Go is widely considered one of the toughest strategy games to play as each move has roughly 250 choices.  However, DeepMind, Google’s AI program, has repeated beaten the masters over the past year.

In talking about the recent victories, DeepMind founder, Demis Hassabis, tweeted that many of the games were played with ‘fast time controls’.  As such, these were speed games, which would benefit only the most experienced players. Or in this case, a supercomputer.

According to a report from Venture Beat, one Chinese player offered a reward of $14,300 (100,000 Chinese Yuan) to the player who could beat one of DeepMind’s usernames.

While the game playing is well and good, DeepMind is involved in several initiatives at Google. In fact, the research team has published multiple papers to the scientific community including a paper published by Nature in October of last year on the hybrid computing. Whilst the paper is meant for an academic audience it points out how AI is moving beyond the research lab and into the real world.

One company which is at the forefront of this push is IBM.  The company’s Watson supercomputer when it defeated a host of Jeopardy champions in 2011.  Fast forward five years and Big Blue’s AI initiative is currently working with cancer specialists around the world to help diagnose and treat patients.

IBM has also partnered with companies such as Pfizer for drug research, The Weather Channel, BMW, and several technology companies. The approach has been so positive that IBM has opened up Watson to just about anyone through its Bluemix suite of tools.

AI is quickly becoming big business.  In July 2016, CB Insights, a research firm which tracks venture capital investments, noted that the more than $1 billion in funding flowed into AI companies of last year.  The amount was an all-time high and while the number of transactions were down the average deal size was up.This shows that several AI companies are quickly maturing and many of them have already deployed their technology in the market.

According to IDC, nearly half of all consumers will have regular contact with AI-enabled programs by 2018. This is already happening in several industries, especially banking and finance. Last year the RBS installed an AI program in its customer service department and large U.S. banks such as Goldman Sachs and J.P.Morgan have made significant investments in the technology.

As such, AI is quickly moving beyond hype and along with other emerging technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as Google Home have the potential to be big business.

New Study Suggests Gun Violence Maybe Contagious

0

What if gun violence was just as contagious as the flu? While this sounds as strange as an episode of Netflix’s Black Mirror, researchers at Yale University discover a link between gun violence and other contagious diseases.

In 2016, Chicago experienced 762 murders and over a thousand shootings. The worst history of gun violence in over twenty years. In fact, those primarily affected by violence attributed to guns lived in the inner city and urban areas of the city. Now, researchers at the Yale University have published a study in the “Journal of American Medical Association” showing how “contagious” gun violence is in America.

Yale University Gun Violence
Stock Photo: New Haven – May 18: Yale University graduation ceremonies on Commencement Day on May 18, 2015. Yale University is a private Ivy League research university in New Haven, Connecticut. Founded in 1701

Associate professor of sociology, Andrew Papachristos, and his team of researchers analyzed the social networks of men and women who were arrested over the course of 8-years in Chicago, Illinois. Researchers discovered that a person was the greatest risk of getting shot 125 days after the person most responsible for putting them in harm is subjected to gun violence.

Researchers argue that type of violence is not only a problem but also follows a pattern. Ultimately, the person with a large group of friends who have become a victim of gun violence are also more likely to get shot. With that being said, researchers were not able to prove that gun violence is actually “contagious”.

However, Papachristos explained that it is important that we understand the timing of these events in order to identify victims and where provide programs to reduce violence in historically violent areas.

Can gun violence be stopped?

Gun Violence

The U.S. government is still working on a solution to stop gun violence. Project Safe Neighborhoods is a program to help reduce gun and gang violence in America by working with existing programs that target crime. Since 2001, nearly $2 billion has been used to decrease violence in America. In turn, Project Safe Neighborhoods led to the creation of Baltimore’s “Safe Streets” program. Ultimately, the Safe Streets led to a decrease in bloodshed by using conflict mediations led by program outreach workers.

However, recent a study published in the “Journal of Quantitative Criminology” called Deterring Gang-Involved Gun Violence found Boston Operation Ceasefire – a program designed to help eliminate violence by helping at risk youth – had little direct evidence of actually positively impacting the community.
