Hallmark veterans Brendan Penny and Amanda Schull are all set to co-star in a medico-suspense series, marking their debut as leads in a Hallmark mystery franchise. In a discreet move, Hallmark Mystery shared details online about the brand new medical mystery “Family Practice Mysteries: Coming Home,” slated for release on May 17. This series is one of many that Hallmark is producing as part of its agenda to focus more on mystery content in 2024.

Schull Takes on the Lead Role as Former Army Surgeon

According to details released online, Schull will play the lead role as an ex-army surgeon who returns to her hometown. Joining a family doctor practice, she finds herself enmeshed in the bizarre death of a patient, turning her quiet existence topsy-turvy. As for Penny’s role, while no specific information is available, Hallmark mysteries usually have the male lead playing a detective or law enforcement officer involved in the investigation.

A Bit About the Lead Actors

Having had minor parts in Hallmark’s “Along Came a Nanny” (2014) and “Gourmet Detective: A Healthy Place to Die” (2015), this is Penny’s first main role in a mystery series. He started with Hallmark in a leading role in “Tis the Season for Love” (2015) and has starred in about a dozen Hallmark films since. He is also a cherished member of the “Chesapeake Shores” cast from 2016 to 2022. His recent Hallmark projects were “A Season for Family” (2023) and “The Wedding Cottage” (2023).

Schull remains best known for her role as Katrina Bennett on “Suits” from 2013 to 2019, and on the SyFy series “12 Monkeys” from 2015 to 2018. She debuted on Hallmark Channel in 2018’s “Love, Once and Always”, and has starred in a Hallmark rom-com each year since 2020, with her latest stint in the Easter 2023 movie, “The Blessing Bracelet.”

Anticipation Builds for More Hallmark Mysteries

With Hallmark’s renewed commitment to mystery content in 2024, fans are in for a joyride. Hallmark Media’s announcement on February 6 of rebranding the 20-year-old Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel to Hallmark Mystery signaled the company’s intent to innovate and bring back engaging, family-friendly crime-solving dramas.

Lisa Hamilton Daly, Hallmark programming’s executive VP, emphasized the importance of brewing fresh mysteries and maintaining Hallmark’s distinct persona. Under her leadership, Hallmark anticipates the debut of a new look and a record number of fresh and returning mystery series.

As part of this initiative, viewers can look forward to more intrigue from the duos Nikki DeLoach and Andrew Walker in “Curious Caterer,” scheduled for an April 26 premiere, and Paul Campbell and Aimee Garcia in “The Cases of Mystery Lane.” Hallmark has also added unique stories such as “Crimes of Fashion: Killer Clutch” and “Gilded Newport Mysteries” to its roster.

Further exciting news for fans is the revival of the well-liked “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” series, featuring Crystal Lowe, Kristin Booth, Eric Mabius, and Geoff Gustafson. These postal sleuths will return in two new 2024 movies. The latest “Hannah Swensen Mystery” is also in the pipeline, beginning filming on April 11.

With a myriad of mysteries meandering their way to the screen in 2024, Hallmark Mystery promises captivating storytelling and an engaging roster of series and films. Keeps your eyes peeled for Brendan Penny and Amanda Schull’s new mystery drama, premiering on May 17 at 9 p.m. Eastern time.
