Notorious Canadian Serial Killer Robert Pickton Passes Away After Prison Attack

Notorious Canadian serial killer, Robert “Willie” Pickton, known for his grim and horrifying crimes in the 1990s and 2000s, has succumbed to injuries sustained during a prison assault. Passed away at 74, Pickton’s death was confirmed by the Correctional Service of Canada in an official statement on Friday.

Inmate Assault Under Investigation

The assault that led to Pickton’s death took place on May 19, inside the Port-Cartier Institution in Quebec where he was serving his life sentence. The alleged attacker, a 51-year-old inmate, is now reportedly in custody.

As stated by police spokesperson Hugues Beaulieu, an internal investigation has been triggered within Canada’s correctional service to scrutinize all the events leading up to the assault. The probe will particularly determine if existing policies and protocols were followed.

Known for his appalling crime spree near Vancouver, Pickton became one of Canada’s most notorious criminals. His case made headlines not just domestically, but it riveted attention internationally.

Sickening Crime Spree and Conviction

Convicted in 2007, Pickton was sentenced to life with no chance of parole for 25 years. His convictions spanned six counts of second-degree murder of women. The extent of his crimes was shocking; he was charged in connection with the death of 26 women.

The investigations which led to his arrest began over 22 years ago as police descended on his farm located in Port Coquitlam, a suburb of Vancouver. The farm became a gruesome scene, where the remains or DNA of 33 women were discovered.

Jarringly, Pickton once admitted to an undercover police officer that his victim count was much higher, claiming a death toll of 49. Adding further horror to his heinous crimes, during the trial a prosecution witness testified that Pickton admitted to strangling his victims and feeding their remains to his pigs. There were concerns among health officials about the meat from Pickton’s farm possibly containing human remains, leading to a tainted meat advisory notice issued to the neighboring community.

Reactions to Pickton’s Death

Paradoxically, the news of Pickton’s death brought relief to some of the families whose lives were forever scarred by his deadly rampage. Cynthia Cardinal, whose sister Georgina Papin was one of the confirmed victims, expressed a sense of karmic justice on hearing the news of the convicted killer’s death.

Acknowledging the deep scars left by Pickton’s heinous crimes, the Correctional Service of Canada emphasized in their statement that their thoughts are with the affected communities, victims, and their families, including the Indigenous populace, who endured a significant brunt of the brutality.

Among Pickton’s confirmed victims were Serena Abotsway, Mona Wilson, Andrea Joesbury, Brenda Ann Wolfe, Georgina Papin, and Marnie Frey. At his sentencing, the Supreme Court Justice of British Columbia, James Williams, asserted that this case unequivocally merited the highest period of parole ineligibility.

The episode of Pickton’s crimes and now his demise in an inmate assault has shone a spotlight yet again on a dark chapter in Canada’s criminal history. With his passing, the authorities hope for some closure for the families of the countless victims who fell prey to his brutal reign of terror.
