Miami Marlins Pitcher Jesus Luzardo Explored as Potential Asset for Injury-Stricken Baltimore Orioles

SportsMiami Marlins Pitcher Jesus Luzardo Explored as Potential Asset for Injury-Stricken Baltimore Orioles

Key Takeaways:

– The Baltimore Orioles are pondering a potential trade for Miami Marlins pitcher Jesus Luzardo.
– This move will aim to bolster the Orioles’ starting rotation severely depleted by injuries in the 2024 season.
– A proposed trade could see the Marlins receiving three top-10 prospects from the Orioles.
– Even if ace Corbin Burnes departs for free agency in 2025, Luzardo’s potential acquisition could help mitigate the loss.
– Luzardo’s impressive performance and contract situation make him an attractive candidate for the Orioles.

Potential Orioles-Miami Marlins Trade Ahead of Deadline

The Baltimore Orioles are looking to shore up their afflicted starting rotation, with Miami Marlins lefty pitcher Jesus Luzardo proving to be an attractive prospect. With the July 30 trade deadline looming, it is likely that Luzardo could find himself as a popular trade candidate, with sports journalists proposing the Orioles as a potential destination.

Joel Reuter of the Bleacher Report placed Baltimore as the conceivable fifth landing spot for Luzardo. He suggested a four-player swap, where the Orioles receive Luzardo, and the Marlins pocket three of Baltimore’s promising young talents, including outfielder Enrique Bradfield Jr., infielder Connor Norby, and left-handed pitcher Cade Povish. This trio is currently among the top-10 prospects in the Orioles organization.

Looking to Add Depth to the Orioles’ Rotation

The Orioles have been hit hard by injuries among their players in the 2024 season. They’ve missed key starters John Means and Tyler Wells due to season-ending elbow surgeries. Current starters include Burnes, Albert Suarez, Kyle Bradish, Cole Irvin, and Grayson Rodriguez. Adding Luzardo to this mix could potentially revive the team’s competitiveness.

With a solid 4.18 ERA in 51.2 innings and strong performances over his last five starts, Luzardo may indeed be a logical addition to the Orioles roster. Although his 2024 season started shaky, Luzardo’s performance improved significantly with an impressive 1.99 ERA with 29 strikeouts from his recent performances.

Long-Term Gain with Luzardo’s Acquisition

Another appealing factor in favor of Luzardo is his contract situation. With a 2024 salary of 5.5 million, he remains under team control for 2025 and 2026. Tim Britton of The Athletic recently valued a potential extension for Luzardo at six years and $90 million, indicating a relatively reasonable investment.

This strategic move could be particularly beneficial if Corbin Burnes, valued at eight years and a whopping $260 million, leaves for free agency in 2025. Luzardo’s presence could potentially provide some cushion for the impact of Burnes’ departure.

The Orioles have much to gain with Luzardo in their team, notably, a much-needed boost and depth to their starting rotation coupled with an effective safeguard for future seasons. Amid the unrelenting injuries plaguing their current rotation, it would serve the Orioles well to keep Luzardo on their deadline trade radar.
