The Uncertain Future of Mad Max: The Wasteland

EntertainmentThe Uncertain Future of Mad Max: The Wasteland

Mad Max: The Wasteland is shrouded in mystery, with its future uncertain for many reasons. After the successful release of the post-apocalyptic franchise Mad Max: Fury Road, George Miller, the acclaimed director, hinted at another sequel, Mad Max: The Wasteland. Unfortunately, almost a decade has passed and there’s still no real news about this mysterious project.

Roadblocks to Wasteland’s Development

After Mad Max: Fury Road, Miller opted to work on a different, smaller-scale project called Three Thousand Years of Longing. This was only released several years after Fury Road. Further complications arose when Miller reportedly sued Warner Bros. This was due to unpaid earnings from Fury Road, which naturally slowed down the franchise. Nevertheless, this issue was settled by 2019, presumably clearing the path for another sequel, Furiosa.

Why The Wasteland is Still in the Pipeline

News about Furiosa was out even before Fury Road started filming. But its storyline, written as a novella, still needs to be turned into a screenplay. The latest update from Miller in 2022 suggested that the story still needed some work. Interestingly, Furiosa’s character isn’t part of the new story, indicating it will have a different focus.

Comic Book Reveals a Potential Storyline

Adding to the excitement, Miller and his partner Nico Lathouris have created a fascinating Mad Max universe within a comic book. The two-part comic released during Fury Road’s launch showcases Max in a race for a V8 engine and a daring rescue mission. This could potentially be turned into a storyline for The Wasteland.

Who will Play Max in The Wasteland?

One question nagging fans is whether Tom Hardy will continue portraying Max in The Wasteland. Although open to a sequel, Hardy’s recent statements cast doubts over his return. Adding to the speculation is the substitution of Hardy with his stunt double, Jacob Tomuri, for the Furiosa cameo.

Will Miller Direct The Wasteland?

Miller’s fans would surely love another Mad Max sequel under his direction. However, concerns arise as the director ages. Having mentioned a few directors he’d pass on the franchise’s baton to, including Guillermo del Toro, Miller’s return remains uncertain.

Furiosa’s Performance and Its Effect on The Wasteland’s Future

Furiosa, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, had a lukewarm reception on opening weekend, which could be seen as an obstacle for The Wasteland. The less-than-stellar reception might make Warner Bros reconsider if audiences still want more Mad Max. Strong performance from a Max-focused film, however, might convince the studio otherwise.

The Unknown Future of Mad Max: The Wasteland

With so many variables, it’s hard to predict what will happen with Mad Max: The Wasteland. Much depends on Warner Bros and whether the story can fully evolve under the watchful eyes of Miller and Lathouris. However, fans can take heart from Miller’s hint at another Max story beyond The Wasteland, keeping hope alive. After all, in the dust-filled universe of Mad Max, anything is possible.
