Mets Reorder Pitching Lineup: Severino To Face Cubs Instead of Yankees

Starting Pitchers Switch-Up

In a surprising turn of events, the New York Mets have reconsidered their pitching lineup for the upcoming 2024 Subway Series opener. Initially, the stage was set for a thrilling showdown with former Yankees member Luis Severino, who now plays for the Mets, against his ex-teammate and current AL Cy Young Award holder, Gerrit Cole. However, the Mets reassessed their strategy.

Taking into consideration the Chicago Cubs’ batting lineup, the Mets have decided to move Severino’s performance two days forward to Sunday night. This change means that Severino will play the series finale at Wrigley Field instead of facing the Yankees at Tuesday’s opening game.

Manager’s Considerations

According to the Mets’ manager Carlos Mendoza, this alteration was all about ensuring the right type of play against the Cubs. “It’s matchup-based,” Mendoza said during a press conference Friday at Wrigley Field. “We felt it was a better move to have [Severino] face off against the right-handed heavy Cubs lineup. Then our left-handed pitchers will play against the Yankees.”

As a result of these changes, left-hander David Peterson will handle the daunting responsibility of facing the Yankees Tuesday. Following him, left-hander Sean Manaea will start the second game of the Subway Series on Wednesday night.

Potential Playoff Implications

While the changes may be a letdown for fans hoping for an old-teams face-off between Cole and Severino, the decision appears strategic with an eye on Wild Card contention. With both the Mets and Cubs just one game behind the San Diego Padres, every match now carries significant importance. A win at Wrigley Field could provide the Mets an advantageous position over the Cubs.

The Subway Series is certainly significant, especially with the Yankees currently leading the league. But this National League matchup provides an opportunity for the Mets to make progress in their playoff run.

Player Perspectives

Severino has accepted the changes with poise, expressing his readiness to do whatever is best for the team. “I checked with him a few days ago just to ensure health-wise he was good to go since he’s going to play on regular rest,” Mendoza revealed. “Talking to Peterson, we explained our reasons and what we’re thinking. They’re both on board.”

So far this season, Severino has established a record of 4-2, with a 3.52 ERA and a 4.17 FIP across 14 games. Although he was shaky in his most recent game against the Texas Rangers, the Mets managed to secure a win.

Peterson, on the other hand, holds a 3-0 win record and a 3.97 ERA in his four matches since a hip surgery. However, in his brief innings against the Yankees, he has an ERA of 10.38.

Upcoming Roster Changes

In other Mets’ news, catcher Luis Torrens was placed on the paternity leave list Friday. The Mets have since recalled catcher Joe Hudson from Triple-A Syracuse who managed to join the team in time for the start of the series.

Furthermore, the Mets claimed outfielder Duke Ellis off waivers from the Chicago White Sox and have opted to send him to Double-A Binghamton.
