Buffalo Bills May Let Go of Star Linebacker, Matt Milano – Major Financial Savings Expected

SportsBuffalo Bills May Let Go of Star Linebacker, Matt Milano - Major Financial Savings Expected

Key Takeaways:

– Analysts consider Matt Milano, the Buffalo Bills’ All-Pro linebacker, a surprise cut candidate due to his recovery from a severely fractured leg.
– The Bills could save around $10 million if they choose to release Milano before the season starts.
– Buffalo Bills have not yet indicated that Milano’s place on the team is under threat.
– High optimism surrounds Milano’s full participation in the July training camp.

Rumours Circulate About Matt Milano’s Future

Last season packed a mighty punch to the Buffalo Bills when All-Pro linebacker, Matt Milano, injured himself in the fifth week. His fractured leg not only ended his season, but also left the future of his career in jeopardy. Now, analysts are speculating that if Milano doesn’t make a full recovery, the Bills might let him go. Alex Kay of Bleacher Report mentioned Milano as an unexpected cut candidate. He insinuated that the Bills could vastly reduce their cap space if they decide to release him before the 2024 season commences.

A Huge Savings for the Bills

Before his injury, Milano was performing exceptionally well, making his potential release a surprising prospect. As per Kay, the 29-year-old star had just finished up a career-best season. The impressive stats of the season included 99 tackles, 11 pass defenses, three interceptions with one returned for a score, two fumble recoveries, and 1.5 sacks. These figures earned him All-Pro honors.

However, the severity of his injury last year puts his recovery progress at stake. Being “still far from fully healthy,” there remains uncertainty around him regaining his top form. Milano’s potential dismissal could pave the way for younger, upcoming players to step up. The Bills have invested a great deal in recent drafts into bolstering their array of linebackers. Kay pointed out that young talent like third-round picks, Dorian Williams and Terrel Bernard, could grab Milano’s starting spot. The significant financial benefit of this move to the Bills would equate to approximately $10 million saved this year.

Buffalo Unfazed by Cut Speculation

As Milano’s future seems murky, the Buffalo Bills persistently remain optimistic about his return, with no indications of insecurity about his position on the team. On June 11, head coach Sean McDermott mentioned that Milano was participating in some limited practice activities and praised his dedication during the offseason.

In expressing his admiration for Milano, McDermott said, “Credit to Matt and what he’s been able to do with our training staff. The work he’s put in, he’s so focused. I feel like he is even more focused if that’s even possible, now.”

Coach McDermott also shared positive vibes about Milano’s readiness to fully participate in the training camp, scheduled to start in July. He maintained a hopeful stance saying, “Hopefully, he’s at a spot where when we open up, he’s available. It’s just a matter of putting it one day at a time and trying to put practices back to back.”

Changes in the Buffalo Defense Lineup

Amidst the speculation about Milano, the Bills have already released some key defensive player veterans to create more room in their cap space. Tra’Davious White, a cornerback, and safety Jordan Poyer were released in March. They also allowed safety Micah Hyde to move in free agency. Although, Hyde has shown some interest in returning back to the team in 2024.

The speculation about the release of Milano remains a topic of discussion. Whether the Buffalo Bills will choose to keep this star player or release him for a hefty financial benefit is a strategy we are yet to witness as the new season draws near.
