Tragic Storm Surge: Maryland Man and Dog Electrocuted During Rescue

A Devastating Culmination in Severn

In a heartbreaking incident, a 31-year-old man in Maryland lost his life earlier this week. This tragedy followed his brave attempt to rescue his dog during a thunderstorm, Anne Arundel County officials shared on Tuesday. The man, whose name has yet to be revealed, unfortunately suffered fatal electrocution.

The Moment of Crisis

The incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Amidst the roaring thunderstorm, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department began receiving several calls. The concerns relayed over these distress calls were about fallen trees and sagging power lines in the Severn area. The disaster seemed localized around Maryland and Disney avenues.

The team rushed to the scene fearing the worst. They discovered a horrifying sight. Power lines had fallen due to the trees collapsing under the might of the storm. These lines were now arcing dangerously. Amidst this chaos, they found one man severely injured from electrocution.

Rush to the Hospital Ends in Despair

The man, still in a critical state, required immediate medical attention. He was swiftly transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center. But despite the best efforts of the medical team, the man succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

A Rescue Turned Tragic

Firefighter Steven Bishop offered more insight into the event while talking to local news outlet WBAL. He said that the man had rushed outside to save his pet dog. A power line had plummeted electrifying a metal fence nearby where the dog was located.

“The dog, unfortunately, was electrocuted first,” shared Bishop. “The owner hearing the commotion dashed out, aiming to save his beloved pet. But he suffered the same fate as his dog due to the electrified fence,” he added.

Neighbors echoed the sense of tragedy. “It’s just heartbreaking, him and his dog,” said nearby resident, Jeff Wunder. “Today is just a sad day.”

Severn, where this unfortunate incident occurred, is a relatively quiet city located 15 miles south of Baltimore.

A Reminder to Stay Safe

As we express our condolences to the unnamed man and his pet, this incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers storms can bring. During such adverse weather conditions, safety of self and loved ones should be the primary concern.

Trees falling and power lines tearing are common during thunderstorms. These can lead to potentially lethal situations, as it did in Severn. Being mindful about one’s surroundings, immediately reporting any fallen power lines to the authorities, and maintaining a safe distance from them could help to avoid such unfortunate incidents.
