Creating the Perfect Plot? Not So Fast!
Do you know that Breaking Bad, your favorite wild ride of a TV show, was not fully thought out from the beginning? The creators, led by Vince Gilligan, didn’t initially know what would happen with Bryan Cranston’s character, Walter White. Sounds incredible, right?
Piecing Together the Plot Puzzle
From what grew to become a critically acclaimed show to a globally recognized masterpiece, Breaking Bad always had fans captivated with the suspense-filled episodes. But, Gilligan recently shared how the team navigated the intricate plot, without a clear roadmap for Walter’s progression. They never knew how the show would end. All they knew was Walter’s journey was to be a tragic one.
The Enigma of the M60 Machine Gun
Remember the M60 machine gun that triggered the dramatic twist in the final season? Walter White got it in episode 16, and it lingered around to finally take his life. According to Gilligan, even up till just half a dozen episodes to the final, the plot direction was barely definite, especially the role of that elusive gun.
Believe it or not, Gilligan and his team discussed ditching the gun at certain points. Fortunately though, his writers finally made him see the urge to keep it in the storyline. And so, the M60 machine gun, a regular background prop evolved dramatically to become the grim game changer, ending Walter White’s life.
Saul Goodman and His Trio of Wives
That’s not all; there were also inconsistencies like Saul Goodman’s personal life. In Breaking Bad, Saul cheerfully disclosed he had three wives. However, in the spin-off, Better Call Saul, we were only introduced to one wife, Kim Wexler.
To shed light on this discrepancy, Gilligan explained that during the creation of Better Call Saul, he and his team prioritized enhancing the narrative flow and character development. Therefore, they decided to leave out two wives and focus more on crafting an engaging story. So, if you are curious about Saul Goodman’s other wives, you may continue with your thoughtful guesses, as the team has decided to keep them out of sight.
In the Grand Scheme of TV Storytelling
The curious revelation from Gilligan underlines the hidden truth of television storytelling. The best shows need not begin with a flawless plot. Sometimes, it’s the surprising, unplanned twists that lead to unforgettable TV moments. Breaking Bad serves as a classic example demonstrating that even uncertainties can lead to iconic moments in a story.
