Get ready TV fans! The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards have kicked off, putting the dazzle back in Hollywood. Things were delayed because of the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes. But here we are now, making up for lost time!
Our amazing hosts this time are Dan and Eugene Levy, a father-son duo making us laugh from start to finish. We’ve seen some intense battles, with the spotlight shining on Shōgun. This epic drama series led with a whopping 25 nominations, hotly pursued by The Bear with 23.
Unwrapping the Big Wins
No contest in the category for Outstanding Drama Series. Shōgun took home the Emmy. But don’t underestimate the other nominees. We’re talking about heavy hitters like 3 Body Problem, Fallout, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses, The Crown, The Gilded Age, and The Morning Show.
In the Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress categories, Shōgun kept the flag flying high! Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai both grabbed the wins. A hearty round of applause to the other nominees who shone brightly in their roles.
Meanwhile, The Morning Show and The Crown grabbed wins for Supporting Actors. Elizabeth Debicki from The Crown and Billy Crudup from The Morning Show walked away with their much-deserved trophies.
Hacks and The Bear Steal the Show
Our laugh surgeons for the year were at Hacks – the winner of the Outstanding Comedy Series. The bounce-off-your-seat kind of funny. Found in Abbott Elementary, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, Reservation Dogs, The Bear, and What We Do in the Shadows.
Our comedy lead actors were none other than Jean Smart from Hacks and Jeremy Allen White from The Bear! And wouldn’t you know it, The Bear also swooped in supporting actor and actress categories with Liza Colón-Zayas and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
The limited series honors were taken by Baby Reindeer, with Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning taking home the awards for Lead Actor and Supporting Actress respectively. Jodie Foster also bagged the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited/Anthology Series or Movie for True Detective: Night Country.
Talking about the big guns in directing and writing, all credit goes to Frederick E.O. Toye from Shōgun and Will Smith from Slow Horses in the drama series. Christopher Storer from The Bear and the trio of Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, & Jen Statsky from Hacks impressed everyone in the comedy section.
Honoring the Best
Making us question reality and dive into unique scenarios, Baby Reindeer won the Emmy for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Kudos to Steven Zaillian from Ripley and Richard Gadd from Baby Reindeer for their stellar work in directing and writing, respectively.
And finally, let’s cheer for the shows that kept us hooked – The Traitors, winning the Outstanding Competition Program, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver grabbing the variety series honors and The Daily Show ruling the talk series.
Before we wrap this up, let’s not forget Alex Edelman’s Just for Us, which grabbed the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.
