Nearly 50% Americans Are Polite to AI, Study Reveals

Artificial IntelligenceNearly 50% Americans Are Polite to AI, Study Reveals

Key Takeaways:

– Nearly half of Americans believe in showing politeness towards AI, according to a new Talker Research survey.
– Gen Z leads the trend, with 56% being courteous to AI.
– About 27% of surveyed people feel that it’s acceptable to be rude to AI.

As the impact of artificial intelligence expands into various aspects of our everyday life, a new study suggests that politeness does have a place in our interactions, even with AI. In a significant find, a Talker Research survey revealed that nearly 48% of participants voiced the importance of courteous behavior when interacting with AI.

Politeness and AI

The study examined people’s communication styles with AI-powered tools, bringing forth a variety of perspectives. The survey showed that approximately 44% of the 2,000 American respondents always use polite language when dealing with AI, like Alexa or chatbots. On the other hand, 25% chose a strictly functional approach, avoiding unnecessary politeness and focusing on the purpose of the interaction.

Interestingly, the younger generation appeared to be more gracious towards AI. Gen Z topped the list with 56% stating they converse kindly with AI, followed by 52% of millennials and 39% of baby boomers.

Reasons for Respect

Respect towards AI seemed to be more than just habit. Astonishingly, about 68% of those who were always polite said, “It’s just my way.” Meanwhile, nearly a third (29%) justified their courteous behavior by stating that everything and everyone, including AI, deserves respect.

However, there was an opposing viewpoint as well. Around 27% of those surveyed expressed that it was perfectly acceptable to be uncourteous to AI, arguing that they are merely emotionless software. Men were more inclined towards this perspective with 34% accepting it was okay to use harsh language towards AI, compared to just 20% of women.

The Study

The survey, commissioned by Talker Research, was conducted online between June 21-24, 2024 and incorporated views from 2,000 Americans. The participants were sourced from online panels and through programmatic sampling.

To ensure accuracy, quality checks were put in place to exclude bots, duplicate responses, and speeders. It’s notable that the outcomes, while offering valuable insights, solely represent the internet user base. This might not accurately portray the views of individuals without online access.

Politeness towards AI: A Requirement?

As artificial intelligence continues to seep into our lives, this study sheds light on people’s evolving behaviour and attitudes towards AI. It poses the questions: should we treat AI units as more than machines? Is politeness a virtue that should extend beyond human-human interaction? These are considerations that need attention as we navigate our rapidly digitalizing world.

In conclusion, what seems clear from the study is this: for a considerable number of Americans, courtesy isn’t just reserved for fellow humans—it extends to AI interactions too.
