Huge Outage For Sky’s Devices
Hundreds of customers in the UK woke up to find their Sky’s smart TVs and streaming devices unresponsive on Thursday. Sky – a Comcast-owned company known for providing internet, mobile, and satellite TV services – moved into the realm of streaming hardware in 2021. While the exact cause of the malfunction is still under investigation, it is widely speculated to be the result of a failed software update.
Understanding Sky’s Tech Innovations
Sky’s proprietary Glass TVs and Stream pucks offer users the option of gaining access to television channels via the internet, instead of using a traditional satellite dish. As it stands, you can grab a 43-inch Glass TV for around $800, or go for the bigger 65 inches for approximately $1,600. Boasting features like quantum dots and support for Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG HDR, these TVs look fancy for the price tag. The hitch is that to buy a Glass TV, you need to commit to a Sky Entertainment subscription.
The Sky Entertainment subscription package mirrors Sky’s satellite TV services. It brings under its umbrella a ton of streaming channels, as well as Netflix (either ad-free or with ads). Sky makes it clear that if the subscription isn’t kept active or renewed, access to these TV apps wouldn’t be possible. On the other hand, the Stream puck (another product from Sky) supports a variety of streaming apps, but it also requires a Sky subscription to function.
Customer Discontent Over Unresponsive Devices
In a twist of events on Thursday, several customers registered their complaints regarding unresponsive devices. Subscribers owning Glass and Stream devices claimed their devices wouldn’t power on, leaving them face-to-face with only a blank screen. Some users also reported that the issue persisted for several hours, causing immense dissatisfaction.
Sky’s Response is Expected
With numerous complaints circulating online, all eyes are on Sky to provide a reason for this unexpected power issue affecting their devices. It is understood that faulty updates could be the root cause of the problem. However, nothing has been officially confirmed by Sky, leaving many customers anxious and unsure.
While the assumption of a botched update sparks hope since this could mean Sky can fix the issue with another update, the situation undeniably disrupts customer experiences and questions the reliability of the company’s devices.
We will be following up on this story and will keep you informed of any updates regarding the Sky device power issue.
