Japan to Intensify Surveillance of Chinese Military Activity

PoliticsJapan to Intensify Surveillance of Chinese Military Activity

Key Takeaways:
– China acknowledges inadvertent violation of Japanese airspace by a military plane.
– Japan still disgruntled about aircraft breach, despite China’s explanations.
– Chinese and Russian military activities around Japan cause concern.
– Japan fortifies defenses in southwestern waters and airspace.
– Unprecedented military drills by Russia and China in proximity to Alaska alarms the US.

Chinese Aerial Breach an ‘Unintentional Incident’

Japanese administrative officials have disclosed their intention to intensify scrutiny over China’s military operations. This comes in the wake of an incursion falling nearly three months prior, when a Chinese Y-9 military plane trespassed into Japanese airspace. The Chinese authorities have clarified this as inadvertent, triggered by unexpected turbulence.

Japan had sternly opposed this incident, immediately scrambling their fighter jets and providing warnings to the stray aircraft. Following this, Tokyo pressed Beijing for an explanation of the occurrence. Yoshimasa Hayashi, Chief Cabinet Secretary, revealed that China admitted to the airspace breach and pledged to prevent similar happenings.

Despite Beijing’s recognition and reassurances, Hayashi stated, “We are mindful of China’s explication, but we will now keenly monitor Chinese military endeavors”.

The ‘Turbulent’ Excuse Open to Dispute

While turbulence can indeed affect aircraft, Japanese authorities consider such a substantial detour from an established flight path is implausible. Japan’s Foreign Ministry revealed China’s stance, stating an unexpected requirement for emergency measures triggered by turbulence caused the incident. No further details about this event or subsequent Chinese explanations have been shared due to diplomatic exchange protocol.

Notwithstanding, the violation of airspace remains unpalatable to Japanese defense officials, who perceive it as a severe infringement of territorial sovereignty.

China’s Increasing Military Activity Raises Alarm

Japanese authorities have expressed growing apprehension towards China’s escalating military activity in and around Japan’s southwestern airspace and waters. This has provoked Tokyo to ramp up its defense measures significantly in the region. The area includes remote islands that are crucial to Japan’s defense strategy.

Japan’s concerns are further heightened by the increasing communal military operations between China and Russia. Evidence of these joint exercises came to light in the previous months through various incidents. A Chinese survey ship trespassed into Japanese territory in August. Following this, in September, Chinese warships, including the aircraft carrier Liaoning, entered Japan’s contiguous zone adjacent to Yonaguni and Iriomote islands.

Japan’s Discontent Extends to Russia’s Military Moves

In addition to the concerns over China’s activities, Japan has reported warning a Russian reconnaissance airplane to vacate its northern airspace in September. It comes as Russian and Chinese military activity escalated near Alaska.

There have also been reports of the US shifting military resources in response to increased Russian military aircraft and naval vessels approaching US territory. Evidence of intensified Russian and Chinese collaborative drills includes instances of Russian military aircraft and naval vehicles, including submarines, advancing towards Alaska.

Overall, the mounting military operations by Russia and China in proximity to territories of Japan and the US spark international concerns. As Japan commits to maintain a keen eye, all eyes are now on Beijing’s compliance with promises to prevent future airspace violations. As tensions rise, it becomes incumbent on the involved parties to keep reinforcing diplomatic channels while ensuring defense preparedness is not compromised.
