ABC to Develop A Scrubs Reboot, With Bill Lawrence Leading the Way

Guess what fans! ABC is cooking up a Scrubs reboot and it’s reported to be in its very early stages of development. Getting the buzz going is none other than the original series creator, Bill Lawrence. He’s weaving his magic on this beloved medical sitcom under the wing of 20th Television, a part of Disney. Scrubs fans may remember that ABC Studios, now under 20th Television due to a Disney shakeup, was the force behind the original series.

The Bill Lawrence Connection

You know him as the genius mind behind Scrubs. Even though he’s now associated with Warner Bros. Television, the word is that he’s rejoining his old buddies for this project. Keep in mind though, insiders say Lawrence won’t be the showrunner if this revival morphs into a series. As of now, no eventual cast members or other juicy details have been revealed.

The Epic Journey of Scrubs

Anyone remember back when Scrubs first hit our screens on NBC in 2001? Spanning seven whole seasons, it then hopped onto ABC for the final two rounds from 2009 to 2010. The single-camera comedy kept us glued to our seats, with the constant shenanigans at Sacred Heart Hospital starring interns, doctors, nurses, and of course, the ever-quirky Janitor.

The cast boasted huge names like Zach Braff (J.D.), Donald Faison (Turk), Sarah Chalke (Elliot), Judy Reyes (Carla), Ken Jenkins (Dr. Kelso), John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox), and Neil Flynn (the Janitor). The way Scrubs mixed humor with a big dose of heart, topped with J.D.’s wild daydreams, got everyone talking. The show, narrated by Braff’s character, was a hit, collecting a whopping 17 Emmy nominations over its nine-season run.

Fans Are Excited for the Reboot

Long after the credits rolled for the final time, Scrubs has kept a massive group of fans walking its hospital hallways. Thanks to Braff and Faison’s 2020 rewatch podcast, Fake Doctors, Real Friends, the show’s popularity once again skyrocketed. When asked about the potential reboot, Braff was bubbling with excitement, saying joining his friends for an extra 10 to 12 episodes sounded like a dream.

Bill Lawrence too dropped hints, jokingly mentioning in an old chat with Variety that the Scrubs reboot was a great way to dodge those pesky questions about his current smash hit, Ted Lasso.

More Scrubs on the Way?

It’s too soon to tell, but the thought of heading back to Sacred Heart Hospital is already getting fans super excited. The unique Scrubs cocktail of humor and heart, plus that amazing lineup of actors, promises to recapture the original’s magic.

So, to all the Scrubs fans out there, brace yourselves. The reboot is in the works, and it’s no joke – just like the Janitor’s subtle sarcasm. This much-anticipated return of the unforgettable medical sitcom might just be the treat we’ve all been waiting for.Check the full story on Project Casting.
