Turning up The Sun’s Power
The sunlight that blankets the hospital’s rooftop is effectively used to generate power, thanks to a collection of 519 solar panels installed atop one of its buildings. This clever strategy produces enough energy to not only power the hospital but also to support needy patients by offsetting their electricity costs. It offers a ray of hope to some 80 patients with challenging chronic conditions and complicated medical needs.
Sharing is Caring
Approximately half the power generated by the solar units fuels the medical center, while the surplus energy assists patients in need. The beneficiaries receive almost $50 off their utility bills every month, thanks to this energy surplus shared by the hospital. This welcome respite softens the blow of their mounting bills, especially for those whose medical requirements heighten their energy use.
One of the first bewillneficiaries of the program, Kiki Polk, a patient with high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes, shares her experience. Living on a tight budget, Polk found it challenging to maintain a comfortable temperature, especially during her recent pregnancy. This much-needed aid brought comfort during a critical time, moreover, it also provided her daughter, who also relies heavily on air conditioning, some breathing room.

The Clean Power Prescription initiative extends beyond merely providing physical relief. The hospital’s medical director of climate and sustainability, Dr. Anna Goldman, who also spearheaded this initiative, shares how home healthcare patients sometimes face utility shut-offs due to their high power usage, leading to enormous stress. The solar initiative alleviates this distress and contributes positively to healthier living environments.

BMC is planning to broaden the horizons of their pilot project. An additional investment of $11 million in upcoming solar installations points towards future growth. The ultimate goal of BMC is to significantly scale up this program to accommodate more patients. The dependency on partners who share their solar energy in return for higher federal tax credits or reimbursements would allow them to serve a higher section of society.
