New Orleans Airbnb Bomb Discovery Tied to Bourbon Street Terror Attack

Breaking NewsNew Orleans Airbnb Bomb Discovery Tied to Bourbon Street Terror Attack

Takeaways:

  • Authorities discovered bomb-making materials at a New Orleans Airbnb linked to the Bourbon Street attack.
  • Investigations reveal ties to the deceased attacker, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who acted alone.
  • Heightened security and ongoing investigations aim to prevent future incidents.

Bomb-making materials found at an Airbnb in New Orleans’ St. Roch neighborhood are believed to be connected to the deadly New Year’s Day attack on Bourbon Street. Federal and local authorities are actively investigating the scene for additional evidence, linking the property to the attacker, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas.

Attack Leaves 15 Dead and Dozens Injured

On January 1, 2025, Jabbar drove a Ford pickup truck into a crowd of revelers on Bourbon Street, killing 15 people and injuring over 30 others. Following the crash, he exited the vehicle and engaged in a firefight with police, where he was fatally shot. Investigators found an ISIS flag, weapons, and an improvised explosive device (IED) in his vehicle. Additional IEDs were discovered in the French Quarter.

Bomb-Making Materials Discovered at Airbnb

A fire at a rental property on Mandeville Street early Wednesday morning led to the discovery of bomb-making materials. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and FBI agents secured the site for further investigation. Evidence retrieved included two laptops and three cell phones linked to Jabbar. Authorities continue to process the scene with specialized teams of fire and explosives experts.

FBI Confirms Lone Attacker

Initial suspicions of accomplices have been dismissed as the FBI announced on Thursday that Jabbar acted alone. Despite this, investigations remain extensive, spanning multiple states to rule out any remaining threats.

Community Concerns and Federal Response

The New Orleans Fire Department’s swift evacuation of neighboring homes ensured public safety during the initial response to the Mandeville Street fire. Residents in the area expressed shock at the connection to such a devastating act of terror.

“They said they found bomb-making material in the yellow house and wanted the bomb squad to look it over,” said Bob Koenig, a neighbor. The property owner, reportedly listed on Airbnb, has not yet responded to inquiries.

No Link to Las Vegas Incident

Speculation regarding a connection between the Bourbon Street attack and an unrelated explosion in Las Vegas was addressed by FBI officials. A Tesla Cybertruck loaded with fireworks and fuel exploded outside President-elect Donald Trump’s hotel, killing the driver and injuring seven others. “At this point, there is no definitive link between the attack here in New Orleans and the one in Las Vegas,” stated Christopher Raia, FBI Deputy Assistant Director of Counterterrorism.

Strengthening Security and Vigilance

This incident highlights the growing need for enhanced security measures in high-profile areas. Officials are urging residents and visitors to remain vigilant while ensuring public events proceed with adequate safety protocols.
