NASA scientists argue that the lack of time to prepare for an asteroid or comet collision could leave Earth open to an ‘extinction level’ event.
The odds of an asteroid or comet colliding into Earth is highly unlikely. Approximately, every 60 million years there is a chance of a major asteroid or comet colliding with Earth. In addition, the last major asteroid collision led to the extinction of dinosaurs.
However, experts warn that humans are not prepared for such a collision. Researchers at NASA are calling for a plan to protect Earth from an asteroid. In fact, researchers argue the best way to protect Earth is by building a rocket, in case an asteroid is headed our way.

The biggest issue surrounding asteroids and comets headed towards planet Earth and how to save humanity centers around time.
Dr. Joseph Nuth, a space scientist and researcher at NASA, argues that the possibility of an asteroid collision with an asteroid is possible but, the lack of a plan to stop it is worrisome.
Nuth asserts that it would take approximately five years to prepare for space mission similar to the Bruce Willis movie ‘Armageddon’. However, asteroids and comets have unpredictable trajectories. While being a great story line for Hollywood, the possibility of using the plan in ‘Armageddon’ would not work.

Consequently, Nuth argues it would be in the world’s best interest to design a rocket on top of an observer spaceship. By adding a rocket to a spacecraft, it would decrease the amount of time it would take to launch a rocket into space to either destroy or deflect the projectile.
Nuth points out that in the past two years, Earth has had two major close calls. In 1996, a comet was headed towards Earth but luckily hit Jupiter instead. Again, in 2014, a comet passed near by Mars.

66 million years ago, Earth’s biggest creatures, dinosaurs, roamed the planet. Until, scientists say an Asteroid smashed into earth. Debris from the collision entered the Earth’s atmosphere changing the environment. This in turn, led to the extinction of 75% of all species including plants and animals that existed 66 million years ago.
While tech billionaires meet with President-elect Donald Trump, hundreds of tech workers vow to never build a Muslim registry system.
The CEOs of several large-cap tech companies were in New York on Wednesday to meet with the President-Elect. According to sources, the meeting was cordial with both sides seeking to strike a reconciliatory tone.

Several tech industry observers have expressed concerns about a Trump Presidency. As candidate, Mr. Trump had struck an extremely aggressive tone against some of the companies represented in the meeting.Examples include calling for a boycott of Apple products when the company refused to help the FBI unlock a phone used by the couple linked to the San Bernardino terror attack.
Despite past differences, both sides agreed that well-balanced trade deals would benefit the industry and the American worker. This mirrors a pledge Mr. Trump made to negotiate ‘fairer’ trade deals with countries around the world.

The first test of this stance will be review of the recently negotiated Trans-Pacific Partnership.Mr. Trump railed against the election. However, the deal has widespread support from the tech community and some of the countries have already ratified the agreement in its current form.
Another issue which came up was cybersecurity. While the specifics of the conversation were not reported, the issue has dominated the headlines with reports of Russian hackers trying to disrupt the election. While the national intelligence community is currently divided on the cause and who this activity benefited it is in agreement that the hackers came from Russia.

One company not in attendance was Yahoo. Verizon is currently considering to purchase the once prominent internet company, but news was released today that it was the target of another data breach which dates to 2013.According to sources that breach compromised the records of nearly 1 billion users – roughly all of Yahoo’s users.
Beyond the growing specter of cybersecurity, another issue which may have come up is the 15-year ‘War on Terrorism’.The war began in earnest following the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.Mr. Trump has made winning the war a hallmark of his security agenda but the battle has increasingly moved from the real world to cyberspace.

On Wednesday, Yahoo announced more than 1 billion accounts were hacked.
Whether it be the Russia hacks controversy that is now circling around Washington D.C. Or, the Adult Friend Finder hack that compromised over 400 million accounts. Hacking attacks on major companies are now becoming more and more commonplace.
Last September, Yahoo announced that the company was hacked and hackers stole private information and data from 500 million users. Apparently, the hack took place several years ago and the discovery only happened after an internal investigation following Yahoo users’ private information was reportedly being sold online.

However, on Wednesday, Yahoo announced that the entire situation is a lot worse than they originally expected. Yahoo published an announcement on their website explaining investigators found the company was hacked again affecting one billion users.
Yahoo’s Bob Lord explained, “Based on further analysis of this data by the forensic experts, we believe an unauthorized third party, in August 2013, stole data associated with more than one billion user accounts.”
Lord added, “We have not been able to identify the intrusion associated with this theft. We believe this incident is likely distinct from the incident we disclosed on September 22, 2016.”

The announcement would make it the largest hack ever. The second largest hack affected Myspace. Myspace was hacked leaving 360 million accounts vulnerable.
This news comes two months after after Verizon announced their plan to buy Yahoo for $4.8 billion. However, after the announcement of the first hack, reports pointed that Verizon wanted to pay $1 billion less in order to by Yahoo. On the other hand, that was after 500 million accounts were breached. Now, that the number has skyrocketed, it remains to be seen if the deal is still in the works.
Amazon announces Prime Air – a drone delivery service.
On Wednesday, Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO, announced on Twitter that the company had made their first drone delivery to an Amazon shopper in England. What was the first Amazon drone delivery through Prime Air? An Amazon Fire streaming device and popcorn. The entire process only took 13 minutes.
Watch Amazon Prime’s first drone delivery video below:
Amazon drone delivery service has the implications of disrupting the entire delivery and trucking industry. On Wednesday, Amazon announced the new program and described it as , “a delivery system from Amazon designed to safely get packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using unmanned aerial vehicles.”
How does Prime Air work?

Prime Air works by using drones to deliver packages to customers in a matter of a few minutes. Currently, the online shopping giant has development centers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Austria and Israel.
If their order weighs five pounds or less, Amazon shoppers can get their package delivered via Prime Air.
Accordingly, Amazon highlights that safety is their biggest priority. In addition, the company has reportedly developed “sense and avoid” technology. Amazon also plans on delivering packages in 30 minutes or less.
Also, the online shipping giant argues that the company believes they have developed drones small enough to not interfere with aircraft traffic.
When will Amazon Prime Air become available?

It is critical to point out that Amazon Prime Air delivery is not currently available. The program is currently awaiting regulatory approval. Earlier this year, the United States Federal Aviation Administration announced new rules for commercial drone use. However, the biggest limitation is that the drones must be operated by a human pilot and not controlled by an algorithm or GPS mapping software.
What is future of drone delivery?

Without the need for truck drivers, drones may disrupt the way people shop for products. In fact, drones could have a major environmental impact by reducing the number of required trucks to make deliveries.
On the other hand, this news comes after Amazon announced their plan to open brick and mortar stores called Amazon Go. The new stores are a different retail concept featuring stores without checkout counters. The move could be disruptive eliminating the need of cashiers.
No doubt, as Amazon continues to innovate, their new technologies point to lower labor costs. In fact, if the FAA approves of commercial drones without human pilots, the need for truck drivers and logistical operators could hit historic lows.
New study suggests viruses are deadlier to men than women.
Charles Darwin’s Origin of the Species has changed the world of science since its first publication in 1859. In the book, Darwin argues that evolution of animals is based around natural selection, fitness, and genetics.
Now a study by researchers, Francisco Úbeda and Vincent Jansen from the Royal Halloway University, take Darwin’s theory of evolution one step further. Úbeda and Jansen latest research discovery argues viruses have evolved to affect men in more harmful ways than women.
Published in “Nature Communications”, the study titled The evolution of sex-specific virulence in infectious diseases, explains that viruses may have evolved to be less harmful to women than on men in order for the virus to be passed onto future generations.

Tuberculosis, the human papillomavirus (HPV) and the Epstein-Barr virus affect men differently than women. In fact, if a man becomes infected with tuberculosis they are 150% more likely to die. Or, if a man is infected with HPV they are 500% more likely to develop cancer.
Why does this happen?

Viruses work by replicating themselves inside of a host. Whether it be a single cell organism such as a bacteria or a human white blood cell. The goal of the virus is to hijack the cell’s DNA replication pathway to produce more and more copies and spread to other hosts.
Ultimately, the virus’ goal is to use the host and spread it to the next host. An unfortunate consequence of this replication pathway, is that the host becomes too sick to serve as the virus’ home.
After testing, researchers discovered that while pathogens affect both men and women, natural selection favors viruses to become less harmful to women than men. Why? Because the virus is more likely to spread through nursing.
Researchers argue that if viruses are too aggressive in women, than they decrease their chances of spreading. Ultimately, evolution has pressured viruses to become less aggressive in women in order to spread.

At the moment, how a virus is able to affect women differently than men have scientists confused. But, scientists believe they have an idea on how it works. Researchers argue that a virus may be able to detect the different hormone levels between men and women, consequently changing their virulence – the amount of damage the virus is causing the host.
As part of a broader strategy to realign the company’s operations, Google announced on Tuesday that it would spin off the company’s self-driving car unit. The new company will be called Waymo and the move is viewed as a signal that the underlying technology has moved beyond the development stage.

The announcement coincides with news that Uber was expanding its test of their autonomous delivery service from Pittsburg to San Francisco. These moves are an indication of the hundreds of billions of dollars which are at stake in the race to develop commercially viable driverless vehicles.
Google, who was once viewed as the leader in developing technology in this space, has lost ground in recent years to a several companies who have been able to bring autonomous vehicles to the market. This group includes companies such as Uber and Tesla, as well as several automakers who have integrated features of driverless cars into latest models.

The Department of Transportation has also set aside nearly $160 million in grants for its smart city initiative – a big part of which is dedicated to mobility solutions. This has also drawn companies such as IBM, Intel, and GE into the space. While these companies are not developing their own autonomous vehicles, their technologies will help to power the driverless roadways of the future.
Adding to the competition is Ford CEO, Mark Fields, who recently told Bloomberg that the company is ‘dedicated to putting autonomous vehicles on the road for millions of people, not just those who can afford luxury cars.’In doing so, companies like Ford and Google will be at the forefront of the biggest disruption to transportation since the car was introduced more than 120 years ago.

The spin-off allows Google parent Alphabet to position the car unit as a technology service provider to automakers and ridesharing services. This could include Uber competitor Lyft as well as public bus services.Another potential application would be long-haul trucking as autonomous vehicles would help to address driver shortages and safety concerns in the industry.
Since its inception in 2009, Google’s self-driving cars have logged more than 2.3 million miles.Last year the company completed the world’s first completely driverless test when the vehicle helped a blind passenger navigate public roads in Austin, Texas.

According to sources, Waymo will remain a privately-held company under the Alphabet umbrella for the time being. However, industry insiders speculate that rapid success could lead the company to IPO the Waymo unit as a separate entity.
Share of Google parent company Alphabet were trending up in pre-market trading on Tuesday.

After 2 million miles of self-driving and years of testing, Google is taking their self-driving car project out of development and into the hands of car companies. Starting Tuesday, as a company under the Google umbrella, Waymo will take their proprietary self-driving car technology and transform it into a commercial product.
What is Waymo?

“Imagine if everyone could get around easily and safely, without tired, drunk or distracted driving,” that is how Waymo describes their new company on their website. Highlighting the ability for people to spend more “doing what you want to do.”
Waymo CEO John Krafcik explained the company’s mission is to “make it safe and easy for people and things to get around.” However, what is next? According to Krafcik, expect to see the expansion of self-driving cars in the ridesharing, truck driving, and personal driving markets in the years to come.
Krafcick elaborated that the future of Waymo lies in “the ridesharing business, trucking, logistics, even personally used vehicles and licensing with automakers.”

Currently, Waymo is testing their self-driving car technology in California, Washington, Arizona and Texas. The technology works by using sensors and software to detect objects up to two hundred yards away in all directions. Waymo explains that their companies’ sensors not only detect but also predict the behavior of motorists. In addition, self-driving cars have the ability to respond to closed lands or complicated situations such as railroad crossings.
Currently, the company has two different prototypes including the Lexus RX450h, a smaller prototype car (shown above) and an expected 100 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans coming soon. Currently, there are test drivers who are behind the wheel who share the experiences with Google designers and developers.

In October, Apple’s self-driving project “Project Titan” was reportedly headed in a new direction starting 2017. According to reports, Apple was interested in working with automakers immediately or develop their own car at a later time. In fact, a Bloomberg report that hundreds of employees within the “Project Titan” team were either reassigned or cut with the remaining staff to allegedly encouraged to provide a new direction for the project.
Is the government ready for self-driving cars?
On Tuesday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a proposed rule that would require vehicle-to-vehicle, also known as V2V communication. (Teguh Jati Prasetyo/Shutterstock)
Self-driving cars are expected to cut down the number of traffic related deaths, which total a million worldwide per year. As well as provide a new form of transportation for millions of people who are unable to drive.
On Tuesday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a proposed rule that would require vehicle-to-vehicle, also known as V2V communication.
Similar to WiFI, V2V communication uses DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communications) radio singles that send and receive short messages over the course of 1,000 to 1,500 feet. One vehicle would have the capability of sharing speed, braking, position and direction. Vehicles receiving these messages would be able to send drivers alerts. Essentially, cars would be able to talk to each other.
But, it would take a few years, if enacted, before it becomes mandatory. NHTSA spokesman Bryan Thomas explained in a statement that it would take about three years after the notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) before talking cars becomes a Federal Motor Safety Standard.
Thomas explained, “The whole process from publication of the NPRM to final rule usually takes about one year,” Thomas said.
Thomas continued, “Two years after that the phase-in period begins with half of new vehicles in the first year being affected, 75% in the second year and 100% from the third year on.”
The future of self driving cars?
But, Google is not alone in the self-driving arms race towards self driving cars. Apple, Uber, Tesla and even Chinese web service company Baidu announced their plans to bring self-driving cars to consumers. In fact, last October, Uber and Budweiser teamed up to deliver a truckload of beer across Colorado, highlighting the possible disrupt in the trucking industry.
Shares of Google were trading up on Tuesday evening, following the announcement of Waymo.
Apple releases wireless headphones Apple AirPods to the public on Tuesday.
After rumors that Apple’s AirPods would not be available until after Christmas, Apple announced the launch and sale of AirPods. This comes after one of Apple’s biggest technological disrupts, the removal of the headphone jack from the iPhone 7. In addition, Apple delayed the release of AirPods indefinitely explaining that the company did not want to ship a product “before it’s ready.” Anonymous sources told the Wall Street Journal that the delay in the sale of AirPods was due to wireless problems.
In a blog post, Apple announced the opportunity for people to purchase wireless headphones online and starting next week, stores will begin selling the new device at their local stores and authorized resellers.

The setup process for AirPods is pretty straightforward. All AirPods users have to do is open their charging case near their iPhone and with a touch of a button, the AirPods are automatically connected to Apple products including the iCloud, iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac. In addition, with a simple tap, users can play and pause music. While, double tapping will allow users to activate Siri.
Tech Specs: AirPods
What makes AirPods different than the other Apple products is the newly designed W1 chip. According to Apple, the AirPods’ W1 chip allows for higher-quality audio and longer lasting battery life. AirPods will be able to last for up to five hours off of a single charge and can the charging case can recharge the AirPods, providing 24 hours of additional listening time.
The new W1 technology will also spread to the company’s Beats headphones as the wireless BeatsX headphones will also feature the same wireless chip as the AirPods. However, those headphones were reportedly delayed until February 2017.

American teens using less drugs, smoking fewer cigarettes and drinking less alcohol, which begs the question – what are teens doing instead?
In 1999, 1 out of 20 high school sophomores tried cocaine. Seventeen years later, cocaine use is down to only 1.3 percent of 10th graders. But cocaine use is not the only illicit substance declining among teens. In 1996, nearly 1 out of 5 eighth graders reported getting drunk in the past year. Now, only 5.7 percent of twelve year olds report getting drunk.
Published in the 2015 National Institute of Health annual study, Monitoring the Future survey, researchers found that there is a major shift in teen behavior and drug use. The studies showed a continued decline in the many illegal drugs including alcohol, tobacco and marijuana. In addition, prescription medications were also on the decline. Researchers surveyed middle school students and high school students as part of an annual survey monitoring drug use among teens.

What’s interesting is that as marijuana becomes legal across the country, the number of eighth graders using marijuana in the past month declined from 6.5 percent to 5.4 percent. This maybe due to the attitudes towards marijuana. In fact, according to the study 44 percent of 10th graders believe marijuana smoking is harmful.
However, four years later, marijuana use in the past month among high school seniors is nearly 25 percent with 22.5 percent reporting using the drug and 6 percent report using it daily. In addition, states with medical marijuana laws also report higher weed use among teens (38.3 percent) in comparison to states without medicinal marijuana laws (33.3 percent).
Nora D. Volkow, M.D., and director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) explained that public health prevention efforts and public policy changes are helping decrease drug use among teens. But, that does not mean Americans should celebrate. Dr. Volkow argues that the 6 percent of high school teens using marijuana daily is worrisome.
“However, when 6 percent of high school seniors are using marijuana daily, and new synthetics are continually flooding the illegal marketplace, we cannot be complacent. We also need to learn more about how teens interact with each other in this social media era, and how those behaviors affect substance use rates,” Volkow explained.

So what are teens doing instead? A 2016 study by Business Insider found that teens are getting phones earlier and spending approximately six hours per day on their cell phone. In addition, reports suggest that many teens are spending every minute of their waking lives in front of some sort of screen, either a cell phone, computer or a television. In addition, studies have shown that Snapchat is one of the most popular apps among teens, followed by Netflix and Instagram. What’s not as popular among teens? Facebook.
With an entire generation living vicariously through social media absent of any mind altering substances, it truly begs the question – are teens addicted to social media and not drugs? A May 2016 UCLA researchers discovered that a teen’s brain reward regions becomes excited when teenagers see high numbers of “likes” on their photos.
Stock Photo: ATLANTA, GA – APRIL 11: A group of Asian teenage girls laugh as they try to take a selfie with a selfie stick at the Atlanta Dogwood Festival on April 11, 2015 in Atlanta, GA. (BluIz60 / Shutterstock.com)
The study analyzed 30 different teens ages 13 to 18. Researchers told the teens they will be participating in a small social network, similar to Instagram. In the experiment, the researchers showed the teens hundreds of photos on a computer screen, including 40 photos the teens submitted. Meanwhile, researchers used an fMRI to see which parts of the brain were activated while the teens browsed the social network. Researchers found that the reward part of the brain, the same part of the brain that becomes excited when someone eats candy, or uses a prescription opioid such as fentanyl or an illegal drug such as heroin, became ignited when they teens saw their photos had “likes”.

The nucleus accumbens is known to be the reward pathway for several prescription medications and illegal drugs including “heroin”. When a heroin user injects the drug, high levels of the neurotransmitter Dopamine are sent to the nucleus accumbens causing an euphoric feeling. The same reward pathway occurs when teens see a large number of “likes”.
While the study did not suggest social networks were as addictive as heroin, researchers did note that large number of “likes” had a larger effect on the teens than just a few. So much so that social media can impact behavior. Researcher in the UCLA study, Lauren Graham explained, “If your teen’s friends are displaying positive behavior, then it’s fabulous that your teen will see that behavior and be influenced by it.”
Graham also added that it is important for parents to be aware of what their teens are seeing on social media and who they are friends with.
“It’s important for parents to be aware of who their teens interact with online and what these friends and acquaintances are posting and liking,” Graham explained “In addition, teens’ self-identity is influenced by the opinions of others, as earlier studies have shown.”
On Monday, Microsoft announced it is working on offering its Cortana virtual assistant to a slew of consumer-focused Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The move will bring the world of the Jetsons one step closer to reality and was announced at the company’s WinHEC conference which was held in China – home to many IoT component manufacturers. According to sources, some of the first Cortana-enabled devices are expected to hit the market next summer after Microsoft releases an update to Windows 10.

Cortana Program Manager, Carla Forester, noted appliances manufacturers are beginning to add touch screen displays to the appliances they are building.Mrs. Forester added that ‘any kind of smart device with a screen can now take advantage of Cortana.
Faced with a shrinking PC market and almost no share in the mobile phone sector, Microsoft sees appliances and connected devices as an important part of the company’s future.According to Gartner, there will be nearly 21 billion IoT-enabled devices deployed by 2020.
Of this total, more than 13 billion are expected to be consumer appliances.Granted mobile phones are considered IoT-enabled devices, but a total to 13 billion devices would represent near doubling from the number of devices currently deployed.

As part of the company’s drive, Microsoft is working to upgrade Cortana’s speech communication capabilities. This includes a ‘Wake on Voice’ feature which will be part of next year’s Creators Update to Window 10.
The company is betting that appliance manufacturers will latch onto these updates and will begin licensing Windows 10.The potential applications of IoT-enabled home devices are immeasurable.Including refrigerators which can automatically reorder food based on the user’s preference, to home heating and air conditioning which can remotely monitor conditions.
One of the biggest challenges for Microsoft or any company moving into the IoT space is security. In October, several high-profile websites, such as Twitter, was shut down due to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack.According to internet security experts, the attack was made possible by targeting poorly secured IoT devices which were then used to bombard the targets servers until they were overloaded and crashed.

While Microsoft’s software was not involved in this high-profile incident, it does highlight legitimate security concerns connected to IoT devices. As such, Microsoft and appliance manufacturers should consider security measures as well as connectivity.
Shares of Microsoft opened up .14% in early trading on Tuesday at $62.26.
