Facebook Fires First Salvo in Fight Against Fake News

0

Facebook releases a new update to combat fake news but, will it actually work?

While fake news is not a new phenomenon, its ability to reach previously unprecedented audiences with the help of social media is something entirely new. As such, many observers have pointed a finger at the likes of Facebook and Twitter for their role of undermining ‘legitimate’ news sources during this year’s election.

There might be some truth to this and earlier this week Facebook took its first steps in the fight against fake news.  The company announced that it has implemented a process to allow users to flag dubious postings and it would also work with the journalists to check the credibility of an article.

While the step was welcomed by most observers, there were some who worried that the process may eventually end up being abused as users and ‘fact-checkers’ rely on personal bias to confirm the authenticity of a posting.  Another issue is the lack of a clear audit trail (similar to Wikipedia) and a process to appeal a decision if a posting has been found to be inaccurate in some way.

In addition, the company announced that it will not remove the posting altogether. However, dubious postings will be labeled with the following warning – ‘Disputed by 3rd Party Fact-Checkers’.  This in itself could raise eyebrows, especially for fake news devotees who tend to discount the reporting of all ‘mainstream media sources’.

Any effort to vet information online is welcome. However, the move by Facebook to raise a number of questions.  First, some analysts have wondered how liable should Facebook be for the information posted on the social media site.  While some would say the company has a responsibility to stop the spread of speech which is hateful or blatantly false.  Others point out that there is a thin line between being diligent and projecting personal bias.

Rand Paul

One example of this is a rating given by Politifact to Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and Former Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) regarding a quote on federal income tax prior to 1913.  While both men said basically the same thing, Politifact rated Senator Paul’s comment as ‘Half True’ and Senator Webb’s comment as ‘Mostly True.’  Regardless of political views, this is a clear indication of bias in Politico’s rating system and if Facebook were to run into the same issues, the fallout could several hurt its brand image.

Facebook Fake News

In the end, the company is caught between users who see fake news as a threat and those who see it as either satire, novelty, or in extreme cases there only trusted source of news.  The fact that the company feels compelled to take steps probably points to how social media networks are increasingly become echo chambers to amplify one’s views.

As such, the company might want to look at the underlying causes of how the network, which was meant to bring people together, is slowly pulling them apart. That being said, it is probably easier to focus on a rating system for posts.

Germany May Start to Fine Facebook €500,000 for Every Fake News Post

0

Germany could charge Facebook €500,000 for every fake news story.

Earlier this week, Facebook announced a four point plan on how to stop fake news from going viral on the social network. But, Germany government officials do not seem that impressed.

Germany announced a law that would charge a fine of €500,000 or about $523,000 USD for every fake news or hate speech post that is not removed within 24 hours. The new law would require major internet platforms operating in Germany to have a point of contact to review suspected fake news and reported hate speech posts.

According to multiple reports, German government officials called out Facebook arguing the social media company has made a lot of money from fake news. In addition, they argued that when a company makes billions of dollars they have a social responsibility to remove fake news and hate speech.

This news comes after Facebook released a four-point plan to eliminate fake news from the social network, which may help Zuckerberg avoid €500,000 fines.

The social media giant announced plans on changing their algorithm, eliminating spoof sites and downranking disputed stories. In addition, Facebook is partnering with third-party fact checking organizations including Politifact, ABC News and Snopes to stop fake news. Most importantly, Facebook explained a new plan to disrupt the “financial incentives for spammers” by eliminating spoof websites.

Earlier this week, President Obama blamed the media for the rise of fake news. During a press conference on Friday, Barack Obama explained fake news mirrors partisan news reports in America.

Obama explained, “If fake news that’s being released by some foreign government is almost identical to reports that are being issued through partisan [U.S.] news venues, then it’s not surprising that foreign propaganda will have a greater effect.”

Obama also called for news reporting based on facts. “I do hope that we all just take some time, take a breath … to just reflect a little bit more about how can we get to a place where people are focused on working together based on at least some common set of facts?”

CDC: New York Drug Overdose Deaths Increase by 135.7%

0

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers are reporting a drastic increase in the number of illicit drug overdoses death.

In the “Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report”, scientists reported a rise a 300% increase in the number of drug overdose deaths from 1999 to 2014. The cause of the rise in drug overdose deaths? Researchers point out that opioid drugs are the problem.

CDC researchers analyzed drug overdose deaths from 2010 to 2015 and specifically centered on opioid drug overdoses from 2014 to 2015. The CDC explains the growing market of heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl – an opioid medication that is several times stronger than heroin is the main public health crisis affecting Americans. In fact, the rates of deaths caused by opioids drugs have increased across the United States.

Researchers also pointed out that there has been a rise in drug overdose deaths since 1999. From 2014 to 2015 the number of people dying from drug overdose deaths increased by 11.4% as the number of drug overdose deaths increased by over 5,000 individuals. Meanwhile the number of opioid related drug overdoses increased by 15.6%.

The CDC also revealed that opioid related drug overdoses have increased dramatically in the Northeast and Southern United States. In fact, the largest increase in drug overdoses occurred in New York, followed by Connecticut and Illinois. Scientists argued that the number of people who died from a drug overdose in New York increased by 135.7%. Meanwhile, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Virginia saw a decrease in opioid drug overdoses.

The CDC further explains that a public health and law enforcement initiative is urgently needed to combat drug overdose deaths.

The CDC provided solutions to the growing Opioid drug overdose problem include:

  1. Improving access and use of prescription drug monitoring programs
  2. Enhancing naloxone distribution
  3. Increasing opioid use disorder treatment facilities
  4. Supporting law enforcement with strategies to reduce the supply of opioid drugs.

Last November, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) called prescription drugs the most significant drug-related threat to the United States.

In addition DEA report, the government agency pointed out that nearly 50 different people died as a result of taking a deadly synthetic drug called U-47700. In the report, the DEA explained U-47700 is a new type of synthetic opioid that is similar to heroin and prescription opioids but nearly 7 times stronger.

Typically sold in the form of a powder or a tablet, the DEA explains that the product is being sold as either illegal heroin or as an opioid medication. Consequently, drug users do not know what kind of drug they are ingesting. In a statement, the DEA argued U-47700 creates a “”Russian Roulette” scenario for any drug user”.

Nintendo’s Stock Price Drops After the Release of ‘Super Mario Run’

0

On Thursday, Nintendo released “Super Mario Run”.

The newest spin-off in the “Super Mario Bros.” franchise is supposed to be one of the biggest mobile games of the year. Analysts predicted that the company will earn $100 million in the next few weeks. However, by Friday Nintendo’s stock price dropped nearly 8%.

What is Super Mario Run?

With the Nintendo’s new mobile gaming app, the gameplay is simplified mirroring the earliest versions of Mario. The game works like many other side-scrolling mobile gaming apps. Players essentially guide Mario over hurdles, enemies, and collect coins.

The goal is to reach and save the princess after completing several levels and defeating major bosses in the process as fast as possible.

However, Super Mario Run features a new and modern twist called “Toad Rally”. Mixing a social network with multiplayer gaming, Super Mario Run users can compete against other players and friends in the app.

Playing the game mode can earn the player coins used to buy items for customizing their “Mushroom Kingdom”, a gameplay mode similar to Farmville. In addition, players can unlock other characters including:

  • Yoshi
  • Toadette
  • Princess Peach
  • Luigi

For all intensive purposes, Super Mario Run is a freemium app. While the first few levels of the game are free, if a player is interested in completing the full game they would have to pay $9.99 for all of the features.

Nintendo of America’s Senior VP of Sales and Marketing hailed the new mobile application in a statement saying “Super Mario Run brings a new take on the series’ beloved action-platforming gameplay to iPhone and iPad for the first time.”

Why did Nintendo make Super Mario Run?

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata argued that the company would lose their identity and “cease to be Nintendo”, if they designed mobile gaming apps. But, by 2014 as the video game company announced a $240 million loss in the financial year, due to the lack of video game sales.

Iwata then explained in 2015 a new mission to transition Nintendo into the mobile gaming arena. Nintendo would partner with Niantic, Inc and The Pokémon Company to release the critically acclaimed and the hugely successful Pokémon Go.

On September 7th during Apple’s annual iPhone event, Super Mario Run was officially announced to the world. Currently available as an iOS app with a scheduled release on Android device at a later time.

Since the release of Super Mario Run reports estimate that the app was downloaded nearly 3 million times on the first day it was was released – beating Pokémon Go.

By Friday morning, Super Mario Run was the most downloaded app in the App Store.

A consumer report by Newzoo expects the mobile gaming app to earn $100 million revenue in the next few weeks. Arguing the the combined promotional campaign alongside Apple’s iPhone 7 and the anticipation surrounding the strong Mario branded game will prove highly profitable for Nintendo.

However, by Friday evening Nintendo’s stock (NTDOY) dropped 7.67%.

Fallout from Yahoo Hack Continues as Verizon Mulls Withdrawing Its Offer

0

The latest victim of the massive hack which compromised the information of more than 1 billion users may be Yahoo itself.  According to sources with knowledge of ongoing negotiations between Verizon and Yahoo, the two companies are at odds with how to reprice their deal.

Some sources have intimated that Verizon and its lawyers are considering the nuclear option of petitioning a court to release them from any liability in its negotiations with Yahoo. This would allow the telecom company to walk away from its planned buyout of Yahoo without any penalty.

Several M&A analysts believe Verizon might have a solid argument as the Yahoo hacks point to a lack of governance at the internet company and these failures of management could ‘materially impact’ the company’s valuation.

The key phrase here is ‘materially impact’.  While Verizon would have to prove its case, observers believe sufficient evidence might be available to show that Yahoo is not worth what the company say it is.

Verizon Yahoo
Stock Photo:

If Verizon is able to extricate itself from negotiations with Yahoo, then this causes more problems for the troubled internet company.  First, the company is bound to face several class action lawsuits stemming from the security breaches.  Second, Verizon’s claim that Yahoo is not accurately priced would undoubtedly raise questions from regulators and shareholders alike.  In the case of regulators, the company would be subpoenaed, and fined, and possibly sanctioned, while it could also face lawsuits from shareholder groups and board challenges from activist investors.

Caught in the crosshairs of the news is Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, who many believed was looking at the Verizon deal as her last chance to resurrect the once company.  While Mrs. Mayer was brought in to turn around the struggling company, her achievements have uneven at best.

The company lost more than $2 billion in free cash in 2015 and analysts believe that Yahoo might have less than $1 billion in cash available.  As such, it is difficult to see how the company is worth the $4.8 billion which Verizon originally pledged to pay for the company.

Yahoo!

While analysts don’t believe Yahoo will file for bankruptcy, it is possible that the fallout from the news of these events might push the company over the brink.  Adding to the injury was a Bloomberg report that information from the hack may contain information on Government employees – including those who work for the CIA, FBI, and NSA.

If this is correct then it is likely that Mrs. Mayer and her management will be called before Congress to explain how it happened, why the company did not know about it, and what they are doing to address the issue.  These hearing might be part of a broader initiative on addressing cybersecurity issues in government and industry.

Shares of Yahoo and Verizon were trading up on Friday based on strength in the broader market.

McDonald’s Announces UberEATS Delivery Service in Miami, Orlando and Tampa

McDonald’s partners with UberEATS to deliver food in Orlando, Miami, and Tampa.

Whether you are traveling across the interstate or visiting a shopping mall, you are pretty much guaranteed to spot a McDonald’s fast food restaurant.

Now, McDonald’s is working on making it even easier to order a Big Mac, large fries and an apple pie. The fast food giant is partnering with UberEats in Orlando, Tampa, and Miami, Florida.

Starting early 2017 stores across Florida’s biggest cities will start delivering fast food to people. McDonald’s plans on going worldwide by 2018.

Partnering up with UberEATS and updating the McDonald’s app, the fast food giant will provide delivery service from 25,000 different fast food McDonald’s restaurants.

UberEATS is tapping into the growing food delivery market. Instead of transporting people, UberEATS transports food. As part of an expansion of the Uber service, the new feature connects Uber drivers with people interested in getting their food delivered.

Earlier this week, Uber unleashed their self-driving cars in San Francisco, California. However, that did not come without some problems.

On Wednesday, the California Department of Motor Vehicles called for Uber to end their self-driving car program in San Francisco or the company could encounter future legal consequences.

Brian Soublet, California’s DMV director argued, if the company obtained a permit for testing autonomous vehicles prior to launching the program, Uber would not have had a problem.

Therefore, he asserts it is illegal for Uber to operate with self-driving cars until they fill out the required paperwork.

Then on the same day the program is launched, one of the Volvos featuring self-driving car technology was filmed running a red light sparking controversy. Uber would later say it was the driver’s fault and not the technology.

This is not the first time McDonald’s talked about about delivery service for their consumers. In 2015, during a SXSW panel discussion, the company said they were always looking for ground breaking ideas. One such idea was developing drone technology that delivered fast food to moving cars.

Scientists Call Synthetic Marijuana a ‘Public Health Concern’

1

Researchers have discovered what caused the “zombie” outbreak, which affected 30 people in New York City.

But, what appears to be an emerging problem manufactured in China and affecting the inner city, synthetic cannabinoids is on the rise across America.

What happened in the NYC ‘Zombie’ outbreak?

On July 12th, several dozen people were found walking around Brooklyn, New York City reportedly high on a synthetic form of marijuana. It was famously coined the “zombie” outbreak because so many people were experiencing a serious, and often times dangerous, hallucinogen poisoning.

Researchers analyzed the blood and urine of analyzing 8 of the 18 patients who were taken to the hospital.

Axel J. Adams and his team analyzed the samples along with the herbal product known as “AK-47 24 Karat Gold”, which was used in the reported “zombie outbreak”.

In The New England Journal of Medicine researchers discovered the synthetic cannabinoid, “AK-48 24 Karat Gold”. The Synthetic Marijuana product was so potent that it caused “strong depressant effects”and that lead to reported ‘zombie like’ behavior due to hallucinogen poisonings.

Researchers explained, the chemical “found in the NYC incident is an example of the emerging class of “ultrapotent” synthetic cannabinoids and poses a public health concern.”

Synthetic marijuana is 100 times more powerful than tetrahydrocannabinol also known as THC. The synthetic cannabinoids were first released in 2008 but, by 2010 researchers were already paying attention to the negative impact it had on the human body.

Published in the Journal of Mass Spectrometry, researchers discovered the chemical identification of the Synthetic Cannabinoids frequently change from product to product and in turn puts consumers at risk by not knowing what is actually contained in their product.

Six years later, that same product predominantly impacts the poor and urban cities.

Synthetic Marijuana Use on the Rise

New York City Homeless

Earlier this year, researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine discovered a major rise of synthetic cannabinoid use in inner cities. Published in the Journal of A59 Tobacco, Nicotine and Marijuana Use, researchers argued Synthetic Marijuana use was a “cheaper alternative” in comparison to traditional marijuana.

The team from Jacobi Medical Center in Bronx also discovered the drug mostly affected the underserved population in the inner city.

Over time, the chemical gained in popularity throughout New York City. From 2014 to 2015 the number of hallucinogen poison calls to U.S. poison centers increased by 229% by 2015.

Scientists analyzed 47 different encounters from 14 different patients and were able to discover the following:

  • Synthetic Marijuana mostly affected men.
  • The median age of synthetic cannabinoid poisonings were 33 years old
  • Users had a history of smoking and alcohol abuse
  • Nearly a third of those patients had a history of mental health issues.

This comes as “new psychoactive substances” also known as NPS are on the rise. NPS is a hallucinogenic substances that are now for sale, with the purpose of mimicking the effect of other illegal drugs.

E-liquid - Synthetic Marijuana

Typically sold in in the form of a liquid or in a foil package, these products are made up of dried of plants mixed with a synthetic cannabinoid chemical. Unless sold in the liquid form so people can vaporize them in a e-cigarette.

How does Synthetic Marijuana affect the body?

Synthetic cannabinoids work on the brain by binding to the same brain cell receptors found in THC, the chemical found in marijuana.

Some users report feeling relaxed, and in a good mood. However, others report delusional or disordered thinking. In fact, synthetic marijuana have reportedly caused the reported suicidal thoughts and violent behavior. Not to mention, kidney damage and seizures.

Not only do synthetic marijuana chemicals negatively impact the poor and mentally ill. The synthetic cannabinoids are extremely addictive. According to multiple sources, regular use of the product can cause withdrawals.

Who makes synthetic marijuana?

In 2013, the Drug Enforcement Agency and lawmakers were unable to keep up with the rise of untested compounds from Chinese manufacturers. In an interview with CBS News, DEA Special Agent Doug Coleman revealed:

‘For the most part China is the main source. They were probably the first ones to start it. Once they saw there was a big demand for it, they ramped it up,” Coleman explained.

Coleman added, “It’s like whack-a-mole. They pop their head up, we hit them, they go down and then they pop their head up in another spot.”

A 2016 Vice report found that the companies are now expanding into the pharmaceutical industry. In what apparently appears as a way to compete with higher prescription costs, Chinese chemists are creating chemicals to treat acne, baldness, antibiotics and illegal drugs such as ketamine with the possibility of thousands in existence.

It is important to point out that many Synthetic Marijuana packages features warning signs including “not for human consumption”.

President Obama Promises to Respond to Russian Election Hacks

0

As Russian hacks continue to make headlines across the country, President Barack Obama promises to respond to the cyberattacks.

In an interview with NPR, President Obama says America needs and will to take action against Russia for the hacks. In addition, Obama explained that he spoke directly with Russia’s president Vladimir Putin about the issue.

Nearly 20,000 hacked e-mails were published by Wikileaks prior to the election. But, everyone is not in agreement as to the source of the leaks or whether the leaks came from Russia.

In an interview with Fox News, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange explained that the source behind the e-mails did not come from the Russian government. With that being said, Assange’s comments explicitly contradict intelligence agencies reports.

Hillary Clinton

At this point in time, the US intelligence committees including a CIA investigative report suggest that Russia is behind the Democratic National Committee hacks. Several intelligence agencies argue that there is evidence to suggest that hackers linked to the Russian government were behind the hacks with the objective to make Donald Trump President. On the other hand, no evidence has been released to the public.

This news comes after Donald Trump called the DNC hacks originating from Russia as “ridiculous”. Trump also called the Russian hack as an excuse to explain how he won the election against Hillary Clinton.

But, President-elect Trump did not stop there. Trump also took to Twitter on Thursday, saying “If Russia, or some other entity, was hacking, why did the White House wait so long to act? Why did they only complain after Hillary lost?”

But, before President-elect Donald Trump becomes President several electoral college members demand more information regarding the hacks. Ten electoral college members, nine democrats and one republican, wrote an open letter to the Director of National Intelligence James Clapper calling for additional information regarding Russia’s relationship in the election before, they cast their votes later on this month.

The electoral college members also called for Donald Trump to release evidence showing his campaign did not seek or receive help from the Russian government to win the election.

Facebook’s 4 Point Plan to Tackle Fake News

0

On Thursday, Facebook announced a new plan to tackle fake news on the social media network.

How is Facebook going to stop fake news?

Now, Facebook is working on a new strategy to tackle Fake news. Facebook’s Adam Mosseri outlined four primary objectives to handle fake news, which include:

  1. Making it easier for Facebook users to dispute stories
  2. Down ranking disputed stories
  3. Changing their algorithm based upon user activity
  4. Eliminating spoof websites and “disrupting” fake news website earnings

The first step included the opportunity for Facebook users to flag content they believe is fake. The goal of Facebook is to make it easier for someone to report something as a fake news story.

In addition, Facebook will begin working with third-party organizations to fact check news stories. According to reports, Politifact, ABC News and Snopes will be the third-party companies tasked with fact-checking stories shared on the social network.

Also, a “disputed” story will show up on the news feed with a disclaimer saying that the facts of the story have been disputed.

Facebook says they will monitor the number of times a story is shared on the social network through “informed sharing.” Facebook explains that if people read an article and do not share it, it raises a red flag. Consequently, Facebook is going to start testing a new algorithm that will allow affect articles that do not get shared after a Facebook user reads the article.

The social network also explained they plan on “disrupting financial incentives for spammers.” Facebook will attempt to accomplish this by eliminating spoof websites and analyzing analyzing websites to detect “where policy enforcement actions might be necessary”.

Ultimately, Facebook says they are working on creating a better and meaningful experience on the social network and the company is reports working on the fake news issue until it is no longer a problem.

Can Facebook stop fake news?

Paul Horner, the owner of a fake news website, reported earning approximately $10,000 a month in advertising revenue by publishing and sharing fake news content. He explained to the Washington Post that he believes Donald Trump was elected into office thanks to him.

During the election, the most popular false news story was a fake report that the Pope endorsed Donald Trump for president; the story would later receive 960,000 shares.

When reporters asked Mark Zuckerberg about whether misinformation shared on Facebook helped Donald Trump get elected, Zuckerberg called the notion crazy.
