Jay Z’s TIDAL Releases ’17’, a Short Film to Fight Social Injustice

The rapper, entrepreneur, and father is expecting twins with his Grammy award-winning wife, Beyoncé. But, Jay-Z is focusing on building his music streaming business and fighting social injustices with his music app, Tidal.

Tidal has partnered with social justice group, Sankofa.org, to premiere 17, a 17-minute short film inspired by people who became victims of police and racial violence. The video includes music from hit recording artists including Ty Dolla $ign, Raphael Saadiq, Mali Music and Elijah Blake.

Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz wrote and directed the musical short film. The video centers around a 17-year-old named Jacobi Nelson as he experiences racism and police violence.

To mark the release of the short film, Sankofa.org and Tidal have launched a social media campaign called #IAM17. The social media campaign is being used to encourage others to share their stories of experiences they had at 17.

In a press release by Tidal, 17 is an introduction to Sankofa’s upcoming debut compilation album. The organization was launched by singer Harry Belafonte four years ago to connect artists and leaders to work together to fight injustice and human rights issues.

The exclusive Tidal content open to TIDAL members and non-members. A portion of all funds raised from the 17 short film will be used to support Sanokfa.org’s social justice grassroots partners who are “working and organizing on the front lines for progressive social change.”

Jay-Z’s Tidal deal with Sprint

This news comes after Sprint purchased 33% of Jay Z’s Tidal last January. As a result, Sprint will make TIDAL available to Sprint’s 45 million costumers and will provide exclusive content to Sprint costumers. In a statement, Jay-Z commented on the Sprint partnership by saying, “Sprint shares our view of revolutionizing the creative industry to allow artists to connect directly with their fans and reach their fullest, shared potential.”

Vin Diesel has appeared in some of the biggest movies in Hollywood history. Launching his career from a short film he made to acting in Saving Private Ryan and starring in the Fast & Furious franchise, it is hard to think of any movie without some trace of Vin Diesel. But, it looks as though Vin Diesel is spreading his wings and venturing into singing.

Vin Diesel added himself to a current Selena Gomez and Kygo song. Diesel broke the news on Twitter saying, You are going to be as shocked as I am… Kygo the magician just took my voice and added it to his new track. Speechless.”

Diesel added, “Go to my Facebook page… wait for it… again thank you Kygo for making magic. Selena’s voice is beautiful and welcoming. Dream come true!!”

Vin Diesel’s next major motion picture is the latest sequel in the Fast and Furious franchise, The Fate of the Furious. The movie features the ensemble cast including Charlize Theron, Dwayne Johnson, and Vin Diesel. The Fate of the Furious is directed by F. Gary Gray, the director of the hit box office movie, Straight Outta Compton. 

Vin Diesel’s The Fate of the Furious hits theaters on April 14th.

Nintendo Says the Switch Console That Leaked Online was Stolen

Fans are now able to get an inside look at the Nintendo Switch before the video game console’s release. However, the circumstances surrounding the early preview are allegedly illegal.

Earlier this month, NeoGAF posted an inside look at the new Nintendo Switch. But, Nintendo addressed the leak and confirmed someone stole several Switch consoles.

Was the Nintendo Switch stolen?

In a statement released to IGN, Nintendo claims someone stole several Nintendo systems.

“Earlier this week, individuals claimed to prematurely purchase a small number of Nintendo Switch systems from an unspecified retailer,” Nintendo explained.

“Nintendo has determined these units were stolen in an isolated incident by employees of a U.S. distributor, with one system being illegally resold. The individuals involved have been identified, terminated from their place of employment and are under investigation by local law enforcement authorities on criminal charges.”

While this does not explain what happened, it does appear as though Nintendo is taking it very seriously.

In the leaked video, a NeoGAF user named hiphoptherobot, says he purchased the Nintendo Switch two weeks early from an unnamed store. Then he proceeded to post a video showing how the new Nintendo Switch works. The allegedly stolen Switch video has obtained over 2 million views.

What is Nintendo Switch?

Last month, Nintendo held a live-event explaining in detail the features associated with the Switch including upcoming video games, pricing and how the system will work. For $299, users have the ability to play on the go, at home, and with friends by using a system dock and detachable controllers. At the moment, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wild and a new video game franchise, 1 2 Switch will be available on release day for Switch.

Tom Holland is taking his new acting job very seriously as Marvel’s new Spider-man took to Instagram to burn a copy of the Avengers: Infinity War script to prevent spoilers from leaking out to the press.

Holland confessed on social media that he had forgotten to turn over his copy of the Avengers: Infinity War script, which is a problem for a movie of this magnitude.

“Marvel [would] like to keep everything a secret,” Tom Holland explained in an Instagram video. “So, to all the producers who are probably freaking out because I forgot to hand in my script, here is evidence that I am destroying it.”

Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War is currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia at Pinewood Atlanta Studios. Holland, who recently shot Spider-Man: Homecoming just a few weeks ago, is expected to make an appearance in the new Avengers movie.

Earlier this week Central Casting, the extras casting company behind Avengers: Infinity War, announced on Facebook rules to prevent spoilers from leaking out to the press including Central Casting’s “Anti-Piracy & Confidentiality Policy.”

“During any time that you are ‘on the clock’ for any production that you have been hired, or booked, to work by Central Casting, you are prohibited from capturing any digital recording and/or image through the use of an audio or video recorder, still camera or cellular phone,” Central Casting said on Facebook.

Central Casting Georgia added, “Should it be discovered that you captured recordings and/or images or posted such recordings and/or images to any social media sites, you could not only be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination, but could also be subject to full civil and/or criminal prosecution to the extent permitted by law.”

Avengers: Infinity War is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and features a large cast including Ironman’s Robert Downey Jr., Captain America’s Chris Evans, and even Groot’s Vin Diesel. While the exact plot of the movie has not known, the film is expected to center around the Avengers joining forces with the Guardians of the Galaxy to defeat the evil Thanos.

Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 2018.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show released a sneak peek of next week’s episode. In the upcoming episode, Ellen asks the question millions of people have probably been asking themselves since last December: Why did Kanye West meet with Donald Trump?

DeGeneres asks, “My question for you about Kanye is, is he friends with Trump? I mean, is he going to visit him again?”

“I don’t think so. I have no idea. I mean…” Jenner answers back. Jenner continues revealing she was surprised by seeing Kanye West meeting with Trump. Kris Jenner explains that her boyfriend Corey Gamble and Kanye met with Trump to discuss “issues.”

“I think he had some, you know, issues that he might have wanted to talk about and I think that was the extent of it,” Jenner said.

“We all have issues we want to talk about with him, but we’re not showing up,” DeGeneres said.

“I think he was lucky enough to be able to get, you know, an audience and talk about whatever they talked about. But I think that you know, it wasn’t for any special intention.” Jenner replied.

Last November, Kanye West was committed to the UCLA Medical Centers after reportedly experiencing “temporary psychosis” caused by lack of sleep and fluids. As a result, Kanye West’s mental state caused the 21 remaining concerts to be canceled and covered by his insurance policy. Then on December 13th, Kanye West met with President-elect Donald Trump to discuss, “bullying, supporting teachers, modernizing curriculums, and violence in Chicago.” However, earlier this month Kanye West deleted all of his tweets related to Donald Trump.

This news comes after Kanye West’s New York Fashion Week fashion show. Last Wednesday, Kanye West presented his fifth season of the Kanye West collection.

‘Atlanta’s Donald Glover Cast to Play Simba in Disney’s ‘The Lion King’

Director Jon Favreau announced on Friday that Atlanta’s Donald Glover will be voicing the character of Simba and James Earl Jones will play Mufasa in the upcoming live-action version of Disney’s The Lion King. 

Favreau broke the news on Twitter revealing Donald Glover and James Earl Jones will be cast in the new Lion King movie. “I just can’t wait to be king,” Favreau tweeted with a picture of Donald Glover. “Looking forward to working with this legend. #Mufasa.” Favreau said with a picture of James Earl Jones.

Donald Glover is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood. Following the success of his award-winning FX TV series Atlanta, Donald Glover has landed a role in the upcoming Star Wars Han Solo spinoff as a younger version of Lando Calrissian.

Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, launched his career as a writer for NBC’s comedy series 30 Rock. He would later play the Troy Barnes in the NBC comedy Community. Glover then left the show to launch a music career and a new FX TV series called Atlanta. The show centered around Atlanta’s rap scene and ended up being a hit. In fact, the show received two Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Also, Donald Glover won Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy.

Meanwhile, James Earl Jones, who voiced the character of Mufasa in the original 1994 feature film, will return for the upcoming remake.

Favreau’s previous Disney movie, The Jungle Book, was a box office hit earning $965.8 million worldwide.

The Lion King is one of the highest-grossing animated in Disney history. In fact, The Lion King brought in $968.5 million worldwide since 1994.

The Lion King later won two Academy Awards and several Golden Globe awards and in 2016 the film was selected to be preserved by the Library of Congress for being culturally significant.

Disney is also working on a live-action version of Beauty and the Beast, which will star Emma Watson as Belle. Beauty and the Beast hits theaters in March.

The release date for Disney’s The Lion King has not been revealed but, this new report shows Disney’s growing relationship with the former Community actor Donald Glover.

Microsoft Releases Game Streaming App to Xbox One Insider Members

Members of the Xbox Insider program now have access to Microsoft’s Beam App. In addition to allowing users to broadcast live streams of their gameplay, Beam will also enable users to watch and communicate with each other.

What is Microsoft Beam?

The app will be available to Xbox users this spring 2017. Xbox users can browse game streams and earn “Sparks,” which is an in-app currency that allows viewers to unlock new features including emojis, experience points and more. Sparks will also illustrate how often users watch others playing video games. For example, one minute of watching another user’s gameplay will earn you two Sparks and every five minutes looking at a stream an Xbox user can earn 10 XP.

Matt Salsamendi, the co-founder of Beam, published a statement about the release of Beam saying:

“The popularity of game streaming has exploded in the past few years, and Beam is unique in that it not only lets gamers broadcast or watch their favorite streams, but Beam also gives streamers and viewers the ability to interact and play along together – it’s pretty cool,” Salsamendi explained.

“Starting today, the Beam app gives select Xbox Insider members the ability to watch, chat, and interact with their favorite game streamers in near real-time, just as we’ve done on the web,” Salsamendi added.

Microsoft reports that games such as Minecraft, Forza Horizon 3 and Halo 5: Guardians has seen a lot of interaction between streamers and viewers.

What makes Beam different?

But, what makes Microsoft’s Beam different than other streaming platforms? Salsamendi says is the ability to interact and participate in the live stream. For example, any stream can include interactive features such as sound boards.

To start using Beam, Xbox users can start streaming on Xbox One by pressing a button located in the Guide. Users can then manage their Beam broadcasts and interact with other gamers. You can also start streaming on a Windows 10 PC by pressing the Windows Key + G.

What about Twitch?

This news comes after Twitch, which is owned by Amazon, announced a plan to expand their business model. Instead of catering to live streams of gamers, Twitch is looking to take over the blogging sector with a new section called “IRL.” This way streamers can interact with their followers in real life experiences.

Microsoft founder and billionaire Bill Gates revealed in a new interview with Quartz robots, who are expected to replace human workers, should pay incomes taxes equal to the human worker they replaced.

“If a human worker does $50,000 of work in a factory, that income is taxed,” Gates said. “If a robot comes in to do the same thing, you’d think we’d tax the robot at a similar level.”

Bill Gates asserts that these taxes could be used to help fund programs that can train humans new skills. For example, the robot tax can be used to help fund retraining human factory workers for jobs that will still require human workers.

“Some of it can come from the profits that are generated by the labor-saving efficiency there. Some of it can come directly from some type of robot tax,” Gates said.

Also, Gates argues that policy should be implemented to “slow down the speed” of automated jobs to allow governments time to manage the technological revolution.

Last December, Amazon announced the release of “Amazon Go” a new service that could disrupt the entire retail industry. Amazon Go is a store that does not have have a single register and most of the stocking will be done by robots and not people. While the idea is great for people who are interested in avoiding standing in line to check out, economists are worried about the future of jobs.

A 2016 report from the Council of Economic Advisers found that nearly 83% of all jobs paying $20 per hour will be replaced by some form of technology. In addition, jobs paying between $20 to $40 per hour will face some sort of disruption.

Overall, Gates argues that more time should be spent on doing a better job of “reaching out to the elderly, having a smaller class side, helping kids with special needs.”

Tyler Perry Upgrades Background Extras to Principal Speaking Roles

Tyler Perry’s extras casting team announced on Facebook several background actors were upgraded to principal speaking roles.

On Friday, Southern Casting Associates, the extras casting company working for Tyler Perry Studios, broke the news on Facebook.

“Congratulations to the two that got bumped to principal today as well- you know who you are,” Southern Casting Associates said on Facebook.

Southern Casting Associates did not reveal the name of the production. However, earlier this month it was announced Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network picked up a new TV series created by Tyler Perry. The new show, Paynes, which is a spinoff of the TBS series House of Payne, is written, directed and produced by Mr. Perry. Paynes will feature LaVan Davis and Cassi Davis reprising their original roles in the new TV show.

It’s important to note that Tyler Perry has a history of upgrading background actors to speaking roles. Last year, while filming his new TV series Too Close to Home, a background actor was bumped to a principal role. Southern Casting Associates broke the news on Facebook saying, “Congratulations to Hunter Watson on being bumped to a PRINCIPAL ROLE!! He is signing his contract as we speak! This goes to show you that it can happen to you at ANY MOMENT when you are working with us at Tyler Perry Studio!”

Last October, Tyler Perry’s latest feature film Madea’s Halloween beat some of Hollywood’s biggest actors. Madea’s Halloween topped Tom Hanks’ Inferno and Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. In fact, Box Office Mojo reports his latest feature filmed earned over $74 million at the box office on a budget of only $20 million. Following the success of Madea’s Halloween, Lionsgate announced several new Tyler Perry movies are on the way.

YouTube Drops Un-Skippable 30-Second Ads

YouTube says they will no longer support 30-second unskippable advertisements starting 2018, to focus on promoting engaging commercial products on the app.

In a statement shared to Campaign, a YouTube spokesperson wrote, “We’re committed to providing a better ad experience for users online. As part of that, we’ve decided to stop supporting 30-second unskippable ads as of 2018 and focus instead on formats that work well for both users and advertisers.”

Earlier this week, Facebook announced a new a new app for TVs that will allow users to stream videos on their set-top boxes. Facebook’s new app will include saved videos, recommended videos, videos shared by friends and popular live video streams.

So why is YouTube pulling the plug on their 30-second unskippable ads? Campaign, which broke the news, argues that YouTube is concerned with the future of Facebook and is concentrating on creating advertisements that are not as overbearing and intrusive. That said, YouTube released last year six-second bumper ads which are less intrusive and far more engaging than 30-seconds. Also, unskippable 15 and 20-second video ads remain an option for advertisers.

While this move away from intrusive advertisements, it raises questions about the future of advertising online and how websites are willing to make money off video content. However, YouTube is thinking outside of the box regarding increasing revenue.

Last January, YouTube announced a new feature called “Super Chat.” Super Chat makes it easier for YouTubers to share and connect with their audience. YouTube live-stream followers can purchase a highlighted message in the chatroom that will stand out from the rest of the other chat messages. YouTube explains that this new feature allows for a deeper connection between YouTubers and their followers.
