Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls ESPN Documentary is Finally Coming Soon

0

The highly-anticipated documentary and inside look into Michael Jordan’s last championship season with the Chicago Bulls is finally getting a release date.

On Tuesday, ESPN and Netflix announced the 10-part documentary is called ‘The Last Dance’ and will run in the United States over five consecutive Sunday nights starting April 19 and running through May 17. Each episode will be two-hours long and airing back-to-back at 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. Eastern Time.

The series will feature never-before-seen footage from that season, which featured the Chicago Bulls team chasing its sixth championship.

“As society navigates this time without live sports, viewers are still looking to the sports world to escape and enjoy a collective experience,” ESPN said in a statement. “We’ve heard the calls from fans asking us to move up the release date for this series, and we’re happy to announce that we’ve been able to accelerate the production schedule to do just that.”

ESPN initially planned on releasing the documentary in June, when the season NBA Finals were to be played. However, with the lack of sports content due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, the release date was pushed up.

The documentary is nearly 25 years in development. The documentary started in 1997 when Jordan, Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf and coach Phil Jackson allowed an NBA Entertainment film crew to follow the team the entire season. ESPN says the documentary includes “extensive profiles of Jordan’s key teammates including Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Steve Kerr,” and Phil Jackson.

“Michael Jordan and the ‘90s Bulls weren’t just sports superstars, they were a global phenomenon,” said Jason Hehir, who directed the series. “Making ‘The Last Dance’ was an incredible opportunity to explore the extraordinary impact of one man and one team. For nearly three years, we searched far and wide to present the definitive story of an era-defining dynasty and to present these sports heroes as humans.”

The documentary series will air in the United States on ESPN and internationally on Netflix.

What Does Furlough Mean?

What does furlough mean? What are the differences between getting laid-off?

While economists predict the Coronavirus will have long-term damage to the U.S. economy, COVID-19 is having an immediate impact on millions of Americans and thousands are getting furloughed.

What does furlough mean?

  • According to Merriam-Webster, furlough means  “to cease to employ (a worker) often temporarily.” The dictionary company points out that furlough is often used as a nice way to say, fire, otherwise removing someone from a job for an indefinite period of time.

Given the ambiguity of the term, the word’s definition will depend upon how it is used. More specifically, if a company says they are furloughing their staff for an indefinite period of time, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary, they are technically fired from their job.

Furlough in America

This week, Macy’s furloughed nearly 130,000 of their workforce. Macy’s announced it’s furloughing most of its workforce, including nearly 130,000 employees. Workers will continue to receive health benefits until the end of May 2020.

“Across Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and Bluemercury [beauty] brands, we will be moving to the absolute minimum workforce needed to maintain basic operations,” the retailer said Monday.

Since March 18, all of Macy’s closed their stories. The company says they will stay closed “until we have [a] clear line of sight on when it is safe to reopen.” That said, their online retail business is still open, but the company said they lost a majority of their sales due to store closures.

Meanwhile, SeaWorld Entertainment announced they will furlough 90% of their employees.

On Friday, SeaWorld Entertainment announced the company would furlough more than 90% of its employees by April 1.

The mass-furlough and park closures come as the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread, and businesses continue to furlough and layoff employees due to the virus’s impact on business.

Busch Gardens announced a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Employees will be eligible for unemployment, and the furlough is indefinite until “business conditions” improve.

“As a company in an industry dependent on travel and tourism, the current pandemic has impacted our business significantly,” according to a statement from SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment. “Our parks will remain closed and are unable to generate revenue; therefore, we have made the painful but necessary business decision to temporarily furlough over 90% of our current workforce, including corporate employees, to position the company for long-term viability. During this time, our focus is on resuming normal operations and welcoming back guests and ambassadors as quickly as possible.”

Arizona Closes Schools Through The Rest of the School Year

Arizona schools will remain closed for the rest of the school year, according to an announcement from Arizona state officials.

Gov. Dough Ducey and Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman released a statement on Monday explaining the decision to close schools.

“In alignment with yesterday’s updated federal guidance, today we are announcing the extension of school closures through the remainder of the school year. Today’s announcement is intended to give parents and educators as much certainty as possible so they can plan and make decisions. While this isn’t the outcome any of us wanted, we are grateful for the partnership of schools around the state, who have stepped up to offer virtual and take-home learning opportunities for our students. These efforts are crucial, and we recognize that schools are making every effort possible to continue providing instruction during closures. We also thank our legislative partners for passing legislation ensuring all educators and staff see no disruption in pay. Our number one priority will continue to be health and safety, and we will continue to work closely with public health officials to make the best decisions for kids, families, and our school communities.”

public schools, both district and charter will have to close for the remainder of the school year. Private schools are also required to remain closed until the end of the federal guidance, which recommends until April 30, 2020.

Vincent van Gogh Painting Stolen at a Museum Closed Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic

Thieves stole a painting by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh in an overnight robbery on a museum. The museum closed to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus COVID-19.

Police and the museum broke the news on Monday, saying the Vincent van Gogh painting “The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring 1884” was stolen in the early hours of Monday. By early afternoon, all that could be seen from the outside of the museum was a large white panel covering the building’s glass front.

Museum General Director Evert van Os said the museum, which houses the collection of Americans William and Anna Singer, “angry, shocked, sad” at the robbery of the painting.

The Vincent van Gogh painting was on loan from the Groninger Museum in the northern Dutch city of Groningen. Currently, the value of art is unknown.

“I’m shocked and unbelievably annoyed that this has happened,” said Singer Laren museum director Jan Rudolph de Lorm.

“This beautiful and moving painting by one of our greatest artists stolen – removed from the community,” he added. “It is very bad for the Groninger Museum, it is very bad for the Singer, but it is terrible for us all because art exists to be seen and shared by us, the community, to enjoy to draw inspiration from and to draw comfort from, especially in these difficult times.”

How did the thieves steal the van Gogh painting?

Police revealed the thief or group of thieves broke through a glass door to get into the museum. The break-in set off an alarm, which officers responded to the museum. But, by the time the police got there, the painting and who stole were gone.

A team of art theft experts is studying video footage, and police are questioning potential witnesses.

It is important to note that this is not the first time someone robbed the museum. In 2007, thieves stole seven works from its sculpture exhibit, including a bronze cast of “The Thinker” by Auguste Rodin. Authorities recovered the sculpture but with a missing leg.

Meteorites Reveal Water Comes From Different Sources on Mars

0

Scientists studying Martian meteorites believe water came from different sources on Mars.

The more scientists analyze Mars, the more information we gather about the planet’s rich and watery history.

Currently, it is understood Mars was probably warm enough to keep liquid water on its surface. Dorothy Oehler at the Planetary Science Institute in Arizona and her colleagues found that ancient Mars may have had hot springs. Researchers compare images of bright areas on Mars with similar-looking geography on Earth.

Oval-shaped areas were spotted inside a crater on Mars, and the irregular shapes and bright concentric ellipses allowed the researchers to conclude this is where the fluid came from underground. That hot liquid may have been released by the impact, which created the crater, and is similar to how hot springs are created on Earth.

The Lunar and Planetary Science Conference were going to present the new scientific finding but, it was canceled due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

It is unknown whether there is still any liquid beneath Mars’ surface. However, scientists have found water molecules in the chemical structure of the planet’s rocks. Barnes used data from Martian meteorites to determine where that water came from. They expected to find similar chemical signatures in all fo the meteorites. But, there were differences, which might mean the magma ocean did not cover the entire surface, suggesting there are multiple reservoirs of water beneath Mars. “Different parts of the interior have different signatures,” says Barnes. “Maybe these different sources of water are telling us something about the building blocks of Mars.”

In relevant science news, between 3.7 to 4.5 billion years ago, life on Earth began. Now, researchers argue meteorites splashed down and leaked essential elements into warm ponds.

Scientists at McMaster University and the Max Planck Institute in Germany report wet and dry cycles bonded basic molecular chemicals int he pounds producing a nutrient-rich solution, which in turn created self-replicating RNA molecules that formed the first genetic code of life on Earth.

The company also said it had taken steps to “maintain financial flexibility.” These steps include suspending their stock dividend, using credit, freezing hiring, and spending. Macy’s also said the company is “evaluating all other financing options.”

Macy’s was struggling long before the Coronavirus COVID-19 economic shutdown. Last February, Macy’s announced plans to close over 100 stores over the next three years and cutting approximately 2,000 jobs.

Nearly 3.3 million people filed for unemployment benefits last week, a number that broke records going back over 50 years.

In relevant news, Wall Street economists forecast things will get worse in the future.

Ian Shepherdson, a chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, says things will get worse. “We now guesstimate that second-quarter GDP will drop at a 10% annualized rate, after a 2% fall in Q1,” said Ian Shepherdson, said in a note to clients last Monday. His forecast suggests consumer spending will decrease in the next few months. “We are becoming more pessimistic about the near-term economic outlook,” Shepherdson says.
