Donovan Mitchell Knicks Trade Unlikely, Nets More Possible

SportsDonovan Mitchell Knicks Trade Unlikely, Nets More Possible

Key Takeaways:

– Despite earlier expectations, the Knicks are seemingly unlikely to pursue a trade for Donovan Mitchell.
– The Knicks are more likely to look for an upgrade in the frontcourt, possibly replacing Julius Randle.
– While Donovan Mitchell’s future is uncertain in Cleveland, there are no strong clues that he wishes to exit.
– The Brooklyn Nets are a more likely destination for Mitchell if a move to New York eventuates.
– The Nets are reportedly keen to boost their offense in the upcoming offseason.

Looking back, it seemed almost certain – New York Knicks fans were ready to welcome back their home-grown son Donovan Mitchell, in the summer of 2022. However, Danny Ainge, then president of Jazz, never folded and instead struck a deal with the Cavaliers. Fast forward to today, and speculation has been reignited regarding Mitchell’s future, not least with the Knicks possibly making their first conference finals in 24 years. Yet, in basketball, as it is in life, circumstances alter, and the Knicks have molded a new roster.

Knicks Give a Cold Shoulder?

Under Jalen Brunson’s leadership, the Knicks have seen significant modifications to their team. They roped in highly-valued two-way wing OG Anunoby and uncovered suitable roles for guards Donte DiVincenzo and Josh Hart. The Knicks seem content, with an NBA executive telling Heavy Sports, “They’ve moved on. They’re not going back there. They’ve their own needs and are looking for another piece, but it’s not going to be some wild deal for Donovan Mitchell.”

Knicks Likely to Seek Forward, Not Mitchell

Analysts predict that if the Knicks do trade this offseason, it will be to enhance their frontcourt talent, possibly replacing Julius Randle. Gaining a more versatile power forward who wouldn’t require the ball as frequently and brings a better defensive game would suit the Knicks more than reacquiring Mitchell, skilled as he is. Mitchell, fresh off a season averaging 26.6 points with 5.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists, hasn’t indicated any desire to leave Cleveland despite eligibility to sign a $200M contract with them. Cleveland, on their part, seems belief they can convince Mitchell to remain.

Nets Could Lure Mitchell

If Mitchell harbors a desire to return to New York, the Brooklyn Nets appear to be a more likely destination. The Nets are widely believed to be planning to boost their offensive line in the upcoming off-season, given their less than flattering offensive rating of 112.4, placing 23rd in the NBA last year.

A change of setting in Brooklyn could offer Mitchell the fresh start he may need, something the Knicks, with their new roster, can’t provide. However, all such speculations are predicated on Mitchell deciding to leave Cleveland in the first place. So, it’s a waiting game, filled with assumptions, and only time will reveal Mitchell’s decision and his future NBA destination.
