Pushing Back Against Criticism

New York Rangers’ captain and defenseman, Jacob Trouba, recently took a stand against sharp criticism made on the prominent hockey podcast, Spittin’ Chiclets. Throughout the playoffs, Trouba endured some severe criticism concerning his performance and several contentious hits. When he learned about the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast’s comments, he retorted with a suicide awareness post.

Addressing Mental Health In Sports

“Suicide rates have doubled over the past two decades in U.S. college athletes,” read one of Trouba’s posts on social media. “A professional golfer from the PGA Tour tragically took his life after a mental health battle, leading many to question the possibility. It’s clear we must do better than this.” To echo his advocacy, Trouba announced that 30-day proceeds from the sales of 24” prints would be donated to AthletesForHope, a non-profit organization committed to fostering mental health, leadership, and social impact in sports.

The Criticism Directed At Trouba

Pasha Esghi, one of Spittin’ Chiclets’ contributors, had aimed harsh criticism at Trouba, labeling him as the worst captain in the National Hockey League (NHL). Esghi voiced his exasperation with Trouba’s perceived lack of discipline on the ice and his history of controversial hits. Among his allegations, he mentioned that Trouba and his wife created the Trouba Creative Expression Arts Program to provide adults with epilepsy and seizures with art services. “Jacob should, however, learn about concussions leading to epilepsy and seizures from his neuroscience major wife before subjecting other players to daily concussions,” Esghi remarked.

Trouba’s Playoff Experience Despite Injuries

After the Rangers were eliminated from the playoffs by the Florida Panthers, Trouba revealed an astonishing revelation to the media. He had competed with a broken ankle. “You feel fine, but once you put a skate on and start pushing at different angles, it does not feel good,” said the resilient player. In the playoffs, Trouba managed seven points in 16 games after having gathered 22 points during the 69 regular season games.

A Leader On and Off the Ice

On May 14, the Rangers’ defenseman received the 2023-24 Mark Messier Leadership Award, which celebrates a player for their remarkable leadership qualities to their team and significant role in nurturing the game in their community. Trouba and his wife, Kelly, have notably raised above $160,000 for the Garden of Dreams Foundation and the Epilepsy Foundation. In addition, the NHL star frequently hosts meet-and-greets with kids from the Garden of Dreams Foundation, providing them with tours of the locker room and the arena. As the recent criticism swirls, it only amplifies Trouba’s commitments to mental health and community support both on and off the ice.
