Juul Labs Comes to Settlement
Juul Labs, a known seller of vape pens, will fork up $27 million to New York City. This action is part of their court deal from April 2023, where they agreed to pay out a total of $462 million for multiple legal cases. The announcement comes straight from city and state leaders.
A Larger Pot for New York State
The funds going to New York City are just a slice of a larger sum. New York State has been awarded $112.7 million from the total e-cigarette settlement. Five other states, among them California, Illinois and even Washington, D.C. are also part of this big money pull.
Funds to Combat Vaping Among Youth
New York State’s Attorney General, Letitia James, has declared that the payout will cover “education, prevention, research, and enforcement programs.” These initiatives aim to keep kids and young adults from using vapes. Speaking at a press conference, James pointed fingers at Juul for causing a nationwide public health crisis with their addictive products.
Minor use of e-cigarettes skyrocketed, with use among middle and high school students more than doubling since Juul’s launch in 2015. Now, this settlement cash will go to fighting what James referred to as “something harmless” in the hands of the youth.
Allocation of Settlement Funds
The Big Apple is set to receive a significant chunk of change – $14.9 million going directly to its schools. Where Mayor Adams’ administration will direct the rest of the funds remains unclear, but enforcement efforts and public health research seem plausible. The city’s deputy mayor, Fabien Levy, declared that the permissible use of the funds includes vaping prevention, nicotine cessation, and enforcement.
“It’s time to look ahead on education and initiate a real fight against this issue,” Mayor Adams commented. He stressed that the initiative must be youth-led given the substantial impact on young people, and he expressed confidence in their ability to develop effective strategies.
Dealing with Seized Vape Products
One possible avenue for the funds is the disposal of seized vape products. Councilwoman Gale Brewer pointed out that getting rid of these products is a costly endeavor, presenting a challenge to city officials.
