The project, titled ‘Horizon: An American Saga,’ has been an ongoing task for Costner since the late 80’s. However, he faced a wave of hurdles, and a cash crunch caused lengthy delays.
Cannes: A Frosty Welcome Despite Standing Ovations
With high hopes, Costner strolled on to the red carpet at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, pitching his dream project. Costner’s first movie of the series earned him an impressive 11-minute standing ovation!
But, the standing O’s were not enough to lock down financial backers for the project.
Costner talked about this icy reception on the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon show, saying he dug into his own pockets and managed some funds overseas to keep the project alive. However, the finances were a more formidable challenge than he had imagined, often leaving him battling alone.
Westerns: An Uphill Battle in Today’s Cinema
Let’s face it, Westerns aren’t the hottest thing in movies today. Despite the genre seeing a decline in demand, Costner has tasted success playing John Dutton in the hit series ‘Yellowstone.’ But he did tap out before the show’s finale, reportedly unhappy with how the project was managed and the multiple shooting delays he experienced.
Costner Keeps Pounding the Rock
Despite the cold shoulder at Cannes, Costner isn’t stepping back. He recently opened up on Variety about his struggle to kickstart any sort of interest or investment in his project. In a funny twist, he shared his plans to drop by and chat with the richer attendees at Cannes to secure some funding. That didn’t quite pan out.
While he indeed loves the project, he knows audiences might not mirror his excitement. This could be why funds aren’t pouring in for him.

Costner’s commitment to ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ is unwavering, but the project’s future is anything but clear-cut. Whether or not the first two films do well at the box office will determine the fate of the remaining movies. Depending on how that goes, he may have to bankroll them alone or even consider dropping the dream project altogether.
The first two movies ‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1’ and ‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2’ are set to hit screens on June 28, 2024, and August 16, 2024.
