Once Upon a Superhero Time
A while ago, Joss Whedon was the big hero at Marvel. He made the highest-grossing films and then suddenly, he called it quits. Marvel was in a fix and needed a quick solution. The answer came in the form of the Russo Brothers. They had previously made a smooth transition from TV to movies with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War. So, the franchise chose them to finish out the epic Infinity Saga.
Winning Big with Marvel
This decision worked in Marvel’s favour, and boy oh boy, did it work for the Russo Brothers too! With the Avengers: Endgame series, they not only filled their coffers but also received a round of applause from the critics. But then in 2021, they teamed up with Spider-Man (from the MCU) for a crime thriller, and things didn’t go as well as sort.
A Bumpy Box Office Ride
After leaving the MCU behind, the Russo Brothers decided to try something new. They worked on the Netflix extraction series which included MCU star Chris Hemsworth. Then they teamed up with MCU’s big gun, Tom Holland, but sadly this movie could not recreate the magic. Their 2021 film Cherry wasn’t a big hit with audiences or critics.
Whilst Tom Holland’s performance was good, the movie lacked the Russo Brothers’ previous artistic edge. This showed in the Tomato-meter score too, which for Cherry was a dismal 37% compared to near-perfect scores for Endgame.
The Comeback Trail?
Regardless of this setback, there’s a buzz that the Russos could be directing the next few Avengers films. There’s a lot of hope, and even an expectation, that they can reclaim their box-office glory.
Spider-Man to Lead the Avengers?
With future MCU movies lacking Chris Hemsworth, there’s been some chatter about who could lead Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Some fans think it could be Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. There’s also been talk that the Russo Brothers and the MCU might give him this awesome responsibility. After all, Joe Russo has hinted that Holland could step into Robert Downey Jr’s shoes in the Infinity Saga.
Despite saying that they were done with the MCU after Endgame, it appears the Russos might be coaxed back to direct the next two Avengers movies. They’ve shared that they really like the Secret Wars storyline, which could be the key to their return to Marvel movies.
Eager Fans Await Marvel’s Secret Wars
Rumors suggest that Avengers: Secret Wars will be released worldwide on May 7, 2027. Despite Cherry’s underperformance, audiences still love the Russo Brothers. There’s a lot of excitement about their possible return. Marvel fans everywhere are eager to see how they can bring back the Avengers magic. With all the anticipation, the countdown to the next Avengers movie has already begun!
