Marvel movies getting released are a big deal! It’s a thrill for the fans. But what if the film isn’t as stellar as they hoped? The recent film Morbius, directed by Daniel Espinosa and starring Jared Leto, might be one such example. Espinosa had a tough time making the film. He blames it on Hollywood bureaucracy and the COVID pandemic, among other things.
Troubles in the Making of Morbius
In a recent chat, Espinosa was pretty upfront about his struggles while making Morbius. He even hinted that maybe someone else would have done a better job directing the film. It appears his take on Morbius, with Jared Leto as the leading vampire, wasn’t exactly what we ended up seeing in cinemas.
Espinosa said, “I’m well-known for having a ton of ideas which the studios don’t seem to like. Maybe they were looking for a different kind of director.” This points to a common problem. Very often, films are made ‘through a committee’ and different opinions tend to water down the final movie.
Not the First Time – Remembering Madame Web
Here’s a flashback. The Sony movie Madame Web also experienced a similar setback. Upon its release, the movie faced extreme criticism, igniting a debate about the ‘committee-based’ movie making process.
Actress Dakota Johnson, who was part of the movie, voiced similar concerns. She said, “I believe a filmmaker and their creative team should be the ones bringing the vision to life. But, today it seems decisions are made by committees and, honestly, art doesn’t typically work well that way.”
Concerns Rise for Upcoming Movie – Kraven the Hunter
While we discussed the past, let’s also look at what lies ahead. There’s worry already hovering over Sony’s next release – Kraven the Hunter, featuring Aaron Taylor Johnson as Sergei Kravinoff. In June 2023, the film released a quite brutal red-band trailer but has been silent since.
Scheduled to premiere on December 12, there isn’t much discussion about it. It’s as if fans have completely pumped the brakes and forgotten all about it. Let’s hope Marvel picks up the pace and triggers some excitement among the fans.
Sony’s Spider-Verse Still Holds Promise
Despite the bumps faced with Morbius and Madame Web, there’s still hope. Sony’s extended Spider-Verse is bubbling with potential. For instance, Spider-Noir, backed by a talented crew, is already creating some buzz and holds promise.
What’s critical now is for Sony to find their groove. They need to understand what works and how to ride the wave. The cool and not-so-cool reception to Morbius and Madame Web highlights the fine line between a bold creative idea and the stress of major studio filmmaking.
