Playboy is Making History with First Ever Transgender Playmate

Playboy is changing the game with their November/December 2017 issue. This time around, the highly controversial and often trend-setting magazine will feature the magazine’s first transgender playmate, 26-year-old French model Ines Rau.

While Rau has appeared in the magazine in the past, she will get the full playmate treatment this time around, with a centerfold all to herself. The issue will also feature a special tribute to Hugh Hefner, who died only a few weeks ago.

“Being a woman is just being a woman,” Rau told Playboy in an interview accompanying her photoshoot. She also admitted that she did not identify as transgender for quite some time, but now that she does, she feels at peace. “It’s a salvation to speak the truth about yourself, whether it’s your gender, sexuality, whatever,” Rau continued. “The people who reject you aren’t worth it. It’s not about being loved by others; it’s about loving yourself.”

While she took a long time to understand her personal identity, she said that Ines Rau always knew that she would become famous.

“I always knew from within, when I was a little kid in my room in the ghetto, that a beautiful destiny was waiting for me,” Rau added. “I don’t know how to explain it. A little voice was telling me, ‘You’ll see. Patience.’”

“When I was doing this shoot, I was thinking of all those hard days in my childhood,” Rau continued. “And now everything happening gives me so much joy and happiness. I thought, ‘Am I really going to be a Playmate—me?’ It’s the most beautiful compliment I’ve ever received. It’s like getting a giant bouquet of roses.”

Rau’s self-confidence is paying off. According to Dazed, she has also signed a deal and is set to appear in an upcoming feature film. Not to mention, Rau has walked in many designer fashion shows, including Balmain, and appeared in Vogue Italia

Rau may be the first Playboy playmate. But, in 1981, Caroline “Tula” Cossey posed for Playboy, making her the first transgender model. She also had a role in the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only, but that happened before she came out publicly as transgender.

Blue Apron is Laying Off 6% of Their Employees

0

Blue Apron is approaching their next earnings report in the next few weeks; the company said Wednesday they plan on laying off 6% of their staff as part of “a company-wide realignment of personnel to support its strategic priorities.”

Blue Apron was one of the most highly anticipated IPOs of the year. But since going public, Wall Street has cut Blue Apron’s stock price in half, and it has been unable to rise since then. The company is an example of a business that faces significant challenges that include acquiring and retaining customers as well as a competing with the e-commerce giant, Amazon.

These layoffs hit the company’s corporate offices and fulfillment centers. Blue Apron said it had 5,393 employees on June 30 this year, which means over 200 people will be laid off.

“A company-wide realignment, like the one we announced, is always painful, and especially so for a close-knit team like ours,” CEO Matt Salzberg said in a note to employees. “Our leadership and Board did not take this decision lightly, and I want to assure you that we believe it was necessary as we focus the company on future growth and achieving profitability. The actions that we took today flowed from the roadmapping (sic) and reprioritization exercise that we recently undertook. As part of that work, we identified the need to reduce some roles, open others, and streamline decision making for greater accountability. Wherever possible, we sought to fill new roles with existing employees.”

For Blue Apron to stay competitive, it is common for a company to go through a round of layoffs. That said, Blue Apron will have to find a new business strategy that will convince investors that it should remain an independent company that can continue to scale. Not to mention, one of Blue Apron’s competitors HelloFresh is also planning on going public.

Channing Tatum is Breaking Up with The Weinstein Company

Channing Tatum is breaking up with the Weinstein Company. Following several accusations of multiple instances of sexual harassment linked to Harvey Weinstein, the actor and filmmaker took to social media to announced that he has canceled his project, Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock.

The movie, which centers around the issue of sexual abuse, was picked by The Weinstein Company. Now, Tatum will no longer work with the company on any future projects.

“Our lone project in development with TWC — Matthew Quick’s brilliant book, Forgive Me Leonard Peacock — is a story about a boy whose life was torn asunder by sexual abuse. While we will no longer develop it or anything else that is a property of TWC, we are reminded of its powerful message of healing in the wake of tragedy,” Tatum’s statement read.

The movie centers around a high school student who plans to kill his best friend and then himself. It would have been Tatum’s directorial debut alongside Reid Carolin. Tatum would also be co-directing and co-producing via his Free Association production company along with Peter Kiernan, with Tatum potentially starring in the movie.

Since the news broke with The New York Times, articles surrounding alleged accounts of Weinstein’s sexual behavior have gone viral. Hollywood has since disassociated themselves with the company.

Brains May Continue to Function Even After Death, Study Finds

0

Here’s some scary news just in time for Halloween. Studies suggest that our brains still function after we die. That means, when we die, we know that we are dead. The research was first published in 2014 and says our consciousness may still function for a period after our physical body is declared dead. Therefore, it is arguable that a person could hear themselves be pronounced dead by a doctor.

This study, which is the most significant scientific studies of its kind, was done by a team of researchers led by Dr. Sam Parnia, the director of critical care and resuscitation research at NYU Langone School of Medicine in New York. Parnia and his team of researchers studied people who had suffered cardiac arrest and had technically been declared dead and then later revived. A large number of participants in the study report being aware of their surroundings during the period in which they were pronounced dead. While most were unable to recall specific memories, 39% of the study’s participants could describe a “perception awareness.” A small percent say they were able to hear full conversations, and even see what was happening around them.

Dr. Parnia tells the Independent, death is scientifically defined by the heart no longer beating and the lack of blood flow to the brain.

“Technically, that’s how you get the time of death – it’s all based on the moment when the heart stops,” Dr. Parnia states. “Once that happens, blood no longer circulates to the brain, which means brain function halts almost instantaneously.”

Moreover, “you lose all your brain stem reflexes – your gag reflex, your pupil reflex, all that is gone,” Dr. Parnia continues. However, this research suggests brain energy that happens after death could indicate that death is more complicated than that.

A 2013 study from the University of Michigan studied brain signals of rats that were anesthetized and experienced a heart attack. Researchers of the study observed brain activity suggesting a “hyper-alerted state” shortly after the rats were pronounced dead.

“This is a very neat demonstration of an idea that’s been around for a long time: that under certain unfamiliar and confusing circumstances – like near-death – the brain becomes overstimulated and hyperexcited… “ Dr. Jason Braithwaite, the professor at the University of Birmingham, told BBC in regards to the rat research. “Like ‘fire raging through the brain,’ activity can surge through brain areas involved in conscious experience, furnishing all resultant perceptions with realer-than-real feelings and emotions.”

‘Game of Thrones’ Star Lena Headey Reveals Weinstein Harassment

Game of Thrones star Lena Headey revealed on Tuesday that she had her own harrowing experience with Harvey Weinstein in an elevator during the Venice Film Festival in 2005. When she declined his advances, he warned her to keep quiet.

“He whispered in my ear Don’t tell anyone about this, not your manager, not your agent. I got into my car and I cried,” the British actress wrote on Twitter.

“At one point Harvey asked me to take a walk down to the water, I walked down with him and he stopped and made some suggestive comment, a gesture, I just laughed it off,” Headey, 44, wrote.

“I was genuinely shocked, I remember thinking, it’s got to be a joke, I said something like… oh come on mate?!?? It’d be like kissing my dad !!”

She said she saw Weinstein several years later in Los Angeles, California. “I had always carried the thought that he’d never try anything with me again,’’ Headey said. “I believed he respected my boundary.”

That said, Headey explained that Weinstein made advances to her again. Weinstein “said, let’s go up to my room, I want to give you a script,” Headey wrote.

“We walked to the lift and the energy shifted, my whole body went into high alert, the lift was going up and I said to Harvey, I’m not interested in anything other than work.

“He was silent as I spoke, furious,” Headey said.

Luckily for Headey, Weinstein’s hotel key card was not working, she claimed. he walked her back to the elevator, “holding tightly to the back of my arm,’’ she wrote.

Weinstein then ordered her to keep quiet about what had happened.

Headed also called out director Terry Gilliam, who she worked alongside in the 2005 movie The Brothers Grimm, that said not for sexual harassment.

Headed explained “(during shooting, I was subjected to endless bullying by the director Terry Gilliam),’’ she pointed out while writing about Weinstein.

Amazon Studios’ Roy Price Resigns Following Harassment Allegations

Amazon Studios executive, Roy Price, resigns following harassment allegations. Amazon Studios chief Roy Price has resigned, less than a week after Amazon placed the studio executive on leave following a producer accused him of sexual harassment.

Following a Hollywood Reporter report detailing harassment allegations against the Amazon Studios chief made by Isa Hackett, a producer of the Amazon series The Man in the High Castle,  Price from resigned the company. Albert Cheng will serve as the interim head of the studio; an Amazon spokesperson told CNN.

Amazon is competing with Netflix, and other TV streaming giants and the loss of a studio executive could be a significant setback for the company. In fact, Amazon decided to cancel an event promoting their new shows in London this week. However, it is unclear if it was due to the Roy Price harassment allegations.

The harassment accusations come from an incident that allegedly happened in 2015. Hackett claims that Price repeatedly made lewd comments to her while they were both attending Comic-Con. Hackett said she reported his improper behavior to Amazon at the time.

Hackett said she was motivated to speak out because so many women had shared their stories about Harvey Weinstein, a film producer who is the subject of several sexual harassments and rape claims that have come to light recently. In fact, Weinstein resigned from the board of the Weinstein Co., on Tuesday.

“I hope we all continue to inspire each other and ultimately create change,” Hackett said.

Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder Lawsuit: Appeals Court Throws Out $72 Million Award

0

A Missouri appeals court has tossed out a $72 million award in a woman’s lawsuit that claimed talcum powder and other Johnson & Johnson products added to her cancer, according to CBS news.

On Tuesday, the Missouri Eastern District court ruled that Missouri was not the correct jurisdiction for the Johnson and Johnson lawsuit.

The court said a U.S. Supreme Court ruling this summer found there must be a clear connection between the plaintiff and the state where a lawsuit is filed. Consequently, in the Johnson & Johnson lawsuit, only 2 out of the 65 plaintiffs resided in Missouri.

The lawsuit was filed by Jacqueline Fox, of Birmingham, Alabama. She died in 2015 of ovarian cancer. The 2006 award she received was the first of several cases that claimed talcum powder contributed to Ovarian cancer. Three other juries found Johnson & Johnson at fault in similar lawsuits in Missouri. A Los Angeles jury awarded $417 million to a California woman who claimed she contracted ovarian cancer from using Johnson & Johnson baby powder.

That said, Johnson & Johnson sees Tuesday’s verdict as a win. A spokeswoman said the company has consistently argued that Missouri had no jurisdiction in cases involving non-residents and the company expects the existing judgments that are going through the appeals process to be reversed.

In 2016, Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay $72 million in damages to the family of Jacqueline Fox. She had been using Johnson’s Baby Powder on her underwear nearly every day since she was a teen. The company claimed that scientific evidence supports the safety of the talcum powder. That said, Ovacome said that 16 studies showed talc increased the risk of ovarian cancer by a third. The British charity later said, “Ovarian cancer is a rare disease and increasing a small risk by a third still gives a small risk.” Johnson & Johnson claimed the studies were not reliable. However, by March 2017 over 1,000 women in the United States had sued the company for covering up the possible cancer risk.

China’s Space Lab is Going to Crash Into Earth! But No One Knows Where

0

Within the next few months, China’s 8.5-ton space laboratory will crash into Earth. But, no one knows where it will hit.

According to reports, Tiangong 1, in Chinese translates to “Heavenly Palace,” is China’s first space lab. China launched Tiangong1 in 2011, and the laboratory worked as a prototype for a permanent space station that the country plans to construct. But six years after the lab was launched into orbit, the facility became unresponsive and is now expected to come crashing down to Earth.

Last year, Chinese officials confirmed they had lost control of the facility and that it would crash into Earth sometime in 2017. Last May, China told the United Nations that the lab would re-enter Earth between October and April 2018. That said, much of the lab is expected to burn up before entering the United States. But, Jonathan McDowell an astrophysicist from Harvard University told The Guardian, that pieces weighing up to 220 pounds could still make it to the Earth’s surface.

“You really can’t steer these things,” Dowell said. “Even a couple of days before it reenters, we probably won’t know better than six or seven hours, plus or minus, when it’s going to come down. Not knowing when it’s going to come down translates as not knowing where it’s going to come down.”

While this may seem insane, this is not the first time this has happened. The Soviet Salyut 7 space station crashed into Earth in 1991. Even the United States’ NASA Skylab fell over Western Australia in 1979.

Despite the setback, China is launched Tiangong 2, a second experimental station in 2016 and plans to have a permanently manned space station in orbit by 2020.

Man Kidnapped By The Taliban Couldn’t Believe Trump Was President

0

The Taliban had kidnaped Joshua Boyle and his pregnant wife on a trip to Afghanistan in 2012. The captors would later kill his infant daughter, he said, and rape his wife, according to Joshua who described the entire experience as a “Kafka-esque nightmare.” Late last year, the couple were reportedly on the verge of making a video to show their loved ones that they were still alive.

That said, Joshua Boyle explained that he thought one of his captors was lying when his captors told him  Donald Trump had been elected the President of the United States.

“It didn’t enter my mind that he was being serious,” Boyle, a Canadian national, told the Toronto Star days after being rescued.

The last time Boyle had access to the news that wasn’t controlled by his Taliban captors was in 2012 when Trump was only flirting with the idea of running for president.

The top issue at the time appeared to be whether or not President Barack Obama was born in the United States. Meanwhile, Trump was still just working on his reality TV show and focusing on his businesses.

In fact, according to the Guardian, in 2011 Trump said, “Business is my greatest passion, and I am not ready to leave the private sector.” Moreover, a study at the time found 71% of people thought Trump had no chance at becoming president.

Joshua Boyle, his wife Caitlan Coleman and their three children – all of them born in captivity – were rescued Wednesday in Pakistan, where their captors had moved them after their kidnapping in Afghanistan. Boyle described himself as a pilgrim and said he and his wife went to Afghanistan to try and help “the most neglected minority group in the world, those ordinary villagers who live deep inside Taliban-controlled Afghanistan … where no NGO, no aid worker, and no government has ever successfully been able to bring the necessary help.”

Bitcoin Valuation Skyrockets to $5,000

0

Bitcoin’s valuation has surpassed $5,000 for the first time on Thursday. The value of Bitcoin has jumped 8% on the day as investors gain more confidence in the cryptocurrency market.

Bitcoin is the biggest and most popular cryptocurrency. Since the start of 2017, the value of the cryptocurrency has increased by 500% this year. It is important to note that the valuation of Bitcoin is highly volatile and more difficult to sell than traditional assets. On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of the risks surrounding the cryptocurrency market. In fact, Russia’s central bank said they are considering banning cryptocurrency trading websites.

That said, Goldman Sachs is reportedly considering offering bitcoin trading and even China is considering easing restrictions of the cryptocurrency.

The main reason why the valuation of Bitcoin is rising is due to a rise in demand for the cryptocurrency. According to data from SEMrush, a search engine data analytics company found the price had a 91% correlation with Google searches surrounding bitcoin, suggesting news surrounding the cryptocurrency increases the valuation of Bitcoin.

This news comes after the head of JP Morgan called out the cryptocurrency as a “fraud,” but after a slight drop in the value of Bitcoin, the valuation of the cryptocurrency has increased by 75% in the last four weeks.

So what is causing the rise in the valuation of bitcoin?

Bitcoin

As we previously reported, the growth can be linked to several factors ranging from political concerns to a recent split into two currencies – the first being Bitcoin classic and Bitcoin cash. The change, which started on August 1st, was made to give the money a larger infrastructure. It also allowed for large trades in the currency to take place more frequency. It is important to highlight the fact bitcoin could be bought for around $570 just about a year ago.
