Ryan Seacrest Accused of Behaving “Inappropriately”

0

In our post-Harvey Weinstein world, more celebrities, politicians and public figures are finding themselves in the middle of accusations, allegations, and claims. Even Ryan Secrets, the co-host of Live with Kelly and Ryan and the upcoming American Idol reboot, has found himself in the middle of a controversy. According to a story in The Hollywood Reporter late Friday, a former wardrobe stylist alleges he “behaved inappropriately” toward her during his time at E! News nearly a decade ago. Secrets have already denied the allegations, the details of what occurred have yet to be made public.

“Recently, someone that worked as a wardrobe stylist for me nearly a decade ago at E! News, came forward with a complaint suggesting I behaved inappropriately toward her. If I made her feel anything but respected, I am truly sorry. I dispute these reckless allegations and I plan to cooperate with any corporate inquiries that may result,” the television host said in a statement to People. “I’m distraught that anyone or any situation would call that into question. I’m proud of my workplace reputation, and believe my track record will speak for itself. I’m an advocate for women. I will continue to support their voices.”

E! is currently conducting its own investigation into the matter, with Seacrest “fully” cooperating.

The Hollywood Reporter’s sources claim [t]he alleged victim is said to have, through her representation, made a substantial financial ask in exchange for her silence.” Meanwhile, “Seacrest [has] declined via his lawyers.”

Argentine Submarine Goes Missing

0

A submarine has been missing for three days. According to CNN, an Argentine navy submarine with a crew of 44 has been missing for several days after the Navy lost contact, off the country’s Atlantic coast.

The ARA San Juan was last seen on Wednesday in the San Jorge Gulf, a few hundred miles off the coast of southern Argentina.

Search crews are looking for the vessel by air and sea, according to a Navy spokesman. The submarine has been traveling from a base in far southern Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego archipelago to its home base in Mar del Plata, a few hundred kilometers northeast. The vessel was supposed to arrive at its destination on Sunday. That said, officials hope the crew will bring the submarine to the surface.

“The submarine knows that if it does not have communication with land for this long, it has to surface,” navy spokesman Enrique Balbi told reporters.

News of the missing submarine hit close to home for the Vatican. Pope Francis, who is from Argentina and former archbishop of Buenos Aires, offered his “fervent prayers for the 44 officers aboard the ARA San Juan” in a statement released on Saturday by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state.

According to CNN, the navy said it ordered “all terrestrial communication stations along the Argentine coast to carry out a preliminary and extended search of communications and to listen into all the possible frequencies of the submarine.”

The United States Navy is also said to be helping. They plan on deploying a maritime aircraft to Argentina on Saturday.

A ‘Transparent’ Writer is Calling For Jeff Tambor To Leave The Show

0

Several allegations against actor Jeffrey Tambor have brought his role on the hit series Transparent into question, with a new report claiming writers are trying to find a way to take his character out of the show. Now a writer for the show and GLAAD are speaking out to say Tambor should walk away from the show and the should continue without him.

According to Deadline, a writer for Transparent and a transgender performer responded to the allegations about Tambor and said that the actor should not be the reason that “Trans content” like Transparent should get canceled.

My heart is broken. I’m struggling to put together words right now, as I’m flooded with emotions. Any abuse of power is inexcusable, but hearing the stories of Van and Trace have particularly shattered me. I honor the strength and courage that it must have taken for them to tell their truth.

Thank you for your leadership, Trace. Thank you for speaking up. And thank you for your proposed solution at the end of your statement. You are right — we cannot let trans content be taken down by a single cis man. I’m sure I’ll have more to say, but this is as much as I can get out in this very emotional moment.
….
My heart goes out to all victims of abuse, told and untold. I hope this is the beginning of our time to heal.

It is a sentiment echoed by GLAAD in their statement on the situation according to Vulture, saying the show is more significant than just Tambor.

“The show Transparent is bigger than one person and is home to some of the most talented trans people in Hollywood — both in front of the camera and behind. GLAAD stands with Trace in her hope that the inappropriate situations she and others endured on set will be remedied, and that future seasons will focus on more of the many brilliant characters that audiences love and care about.”

Tambor has denied the allegations. However, the second accusation from trans actress Trace Lysette has led to the statements and calls for his firing.

Elon Musk’s Tesla Hit with a Racist Work Environment Lawsuit

0

A former Tesla employee is seeking permission from a judge to sue Tesla for racial harassment on behalf of 100 affected African-American workers, according to Bloomberg Technology. In the legal complaint, Vaughn v. Tesla Inc. in the Superior Court of California, alleges that Tesla workers, including managers, routinely used derogatory and discriminatory language against African-American workers.

Bloomberg Technology reports:

“Although Tesla stands out as a groundbreaking company at the forefront of the electric car revolution, its standard operating procedure at the Tesla factory is pre-Civil Rights era race discrimination,” the employee said in the complaint, filed Monday in California’s Alameda County Superior Court.

[…]

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Marcus Vaughn, who worked in the Fremont factory from April 23 to Oct. 31. Vaughn alleged that employees and supervisors regularly used the “N word” around him and other black colleagues. Vaughn said he complained in writing to human resources and Musk and was terminated in late October for “not having a positive attitude.”

Vaughn also alleges that Tesla’s workplace was a “hotbed for racist behavior,” and follows another lawsuit claiming racially-driven harassment and discrimination filed against Tesla last month.

Vaughn’s complaint also quotes allegedly features a letter from CEO Elon Musk, where he tells his employees to be “thick-skinned and accept that apology.”

From Bloomberg:

According to Monday’s complaint, Musk sent an email to Tesla factory employees on May 31.

“Part of not being a huge jerk is considering how someone might feel who is part of [a] historically less represented group,” Musk wrote in the email. “Sometimes these things happen unintentionally, in which case you should apologize. In fairness, if someone is a jerk to you, but sincerely apologizes, it is important to be thick-skinned and accept that apology.”

“The law doesn’t require you to have a thick skin,” Organ said in an interview Monday. “Tesla is not doing enough. It’s somewhat akin to saying ‘stop being politically correct.’ When you have a diverse workforce, you need to take steps to make sure everyone feels welcome in that workforce.”

There are other lawsuits filed against Tesla claiming the company failed to give proper notice when firing hundreds of employees, claims of anti-LGBTQ harassment, a complaint for a female engineer alleging harassment, and a complaint from the National Labor Relations Board defending employee claims that the company attempted to shut down a unionization effort.

Psychopaths Like Justin Bieber, Study Says

Study: If You Like Listening to Justin Bieber, You a Psychopath

People who enjoy listening to Justin Bieber’s What Do You Mean score pretty high on a psychopathy scale, according to a New York University study.

NYU researchers said they “wanted to find out if a preference for certain musical genres is correlated with psychopathy” and passed out questionnaires to nearly 200 psychology students with questions like “For me what’s right is whatever I can get away with” and “Love is overrated.”

The researchers then had the students listen to a wide range of songs and rate them on a seven-point scale. They looked for correlations between songs and psychopathy scores. Apparently, those with higher psychopathy scores liked Justin Bieber’s What Do You Mean?”, according to The Washington Post.

That said, Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” also scored pretty high along with Blackstreet’s “No Diggity”. Meanwhile,  The Knack’s 1979 pop-rock hit, “My Sharona” was not that popular with psychopaths.

“The cliche is they [psychopaths] are all in prison, but they’re all over,” NYU psychology professor Pascal Wallisch told the paper. “The cliche is they [psychopaths] are all in prison, but they’re all over,” NYU psychology professor Pascal Wallisch told WSJ.

Does Ben Affleck Want to Quit Playing Batman?

0

Rumors surrounding Ben Affleck’s future as Batman have been circling since the release of his first Batman movie.

Last January, Affleck said, “If it doesn’t come together in a way I think is really great I’m not going to do it.” A few weeks later, he announced he wouldn’t be directing the movie. Matt Reeves, the director of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, signed up to direct a new script of the movie instead of the one Affleck wrote, which added fuel to the rumors.

Affleck seemed to deny those rumors at San Diego Comic-Con. He told the Comic-Con audience, “I am the luckiest guy in the world. Batman is the coolest part, and I’m so thrilled to do it. It’s f*cking amazing, and I still can’t believe it after two films.”

It seemed as though those rumors were over. Until, Affleck’s brother Casey said, “I thought he was an okay Batman. No, I thought he was great. He was great. He’s a hero, so he had something to channel and work with there. But he’s not going to do that movie [The Batman], I don’t think. Sorry to say. […] Is that breaking news? Because I was just kind of making that up, I don’t know.” Casey Affleck later said he was only joking.

Now, Ben Affleck is stoking the rumors himself during his promo tour of this weekend’s opening of Justice League. In an interview with USA Today this week, Affleck said The Batman is “something I’m contemplating,” later adding, “You don’t do it forever, so I want to find a graceful and cool way to segue out of it.”

Affleck added, “This is the one movie people have really been asking me about as I just go through my life.”

Then, in an interview with ExtraTV last week, he also sounded unsure about how he long he will be playing the character. When asked if he will continue to play Batman in two more movies after Justice League, Affleck commented, “I don’t know about that. We’ll see what the future holds.”

That said, Affleck said he was optimistic about his future, telling USA Today, “We certainly are in need of heroes in 2017. There’s a lot of stuff going on in the world, from natural to man-made disasters, and it’s really scary. Part of the appeal of this genre is wish fulfillment: Wouldn’t it be nice if there was somebody who can save us from all this, save us from ourselves, save us from the consequences of our actions and save us from people who are evil?”

James Franco Reveals What It Was Like to Host the Oscars

0

James Franco was recently nominated for Best Actor at the Gotham Independent Film Awards for his performance in the upcoming feature film The Disaster Artist. Could Franco win an Academy Award for his acting in the biopic about the making of the cult classic movie, The Room?

Franco previously received an Oscar nomination in 2010 for the movie 127 Hours. That same year, he co-hosted the show with Anne Hathaway.

That said, Franco was not too happy with his performance during the live telecast. “At the time I justified it to myself,” Franco said about his performance. “‘This will be an experiment. This will be weird.’ Part of me was so uncomfortable with the attention of being nominated, but also fear of losing, because everybody was talking about Colin Firth [who eventually won for The King’s Speech].” He continued, “I mean, I shouldn’t have been doing it. Honestly, I think the biggest criticism of me, it seemed like I was high or low energy. In my head, I was trying to be the straight man. I guess I just went too far or came across as the dead man.”

Jimmy Kimmel has already been announced as the 2018 Oscars host, so Franco won’t have to work on the show again.

Jon Stewart Says He’s “Stunned” By the Louis C.K. Sexual Misconduct Allegations

0

Jon Stewart and Night of Too Many Stars creator Michelle Smigel sat down on Today with hosts Matt Later and Savannah Guthrie to discuss the upcoming event, which takes place on Saturday.

The topic of conversation quickly turned to the sexual misconduct allegations about Stewart’s friend Louis C.K., which the comedian admitted to after a bombshell New York Times report confirmed several years of rumors.

When asked, Stewart replied, “Um… stunned, I think?” He continued, “You give your friends the benefit of the doubt, I try to think of it in terms of, I’ve had friends who have had compulsions and have done things, gambling or drinking, and drugs, and we’ve lost some of them, some of them have died. And you always find yourself back to a moment of, did I miss something? Could I have done more? And in this situation, I think we all could have. So you feel anger at what you did to people.”

“Look, comedy on its best day is not a great environment for women,” Stewart admitted. “I think it’s gotten better over the years, but certainly when we started 30 years ago it was really difficult, and so to do it was an act of bravery in and of itself.”

Later, the Daily Show host remembered the first time he had heard about the sexual misconduct accusations about Louis C.K., which he had been caught off guard with by an audience member while recording a podcast. “My first response was, what?” he said. “And then, joke joke, and as he kept going I was like, ‘Look, I know this is very serious, but I know Louie, he’s always been a gentleman to me’ — which again, speaks to the blindness that I think a man has, which is like, ‘Hey, he’s a good guy, what are you talking about?

When asked whether or not Louis C.K. has talked to Jon Stewart, Stewart replied, “No I haven’t. Yet. I haven’t.”

7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Iraq, Iran

0

On Sunday in Iraq, a massive earthquake measuring 7.3 in magnitude hit the northern part of the country near Halibia, which is a city located in the northeastern part of Iraq near the Iran border.

News outlets report deaths in both Iraq in Iran had occurred, and the number of dead was expected to rise as recovery operations continue in the country. CNN now reports a total of 300 dead with at least 4,000 people injured.

A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake Sunday in the Iraqi city of Halabja, close to the Iraq-Iran border, killed scores of people in Iran, Iranian officials said.

State-run Press TV reported at least 130 people were killed in Iran, citing the deputy governor of Kermanshah province, Mojtaba Nikkerdar. Citing the head of Iran’s emergency services, Iran’s semi-official news agency Fars News said at least 1,000 people were injured in the quake.

The powerful earthquake reverberated in the form of tremors through the Iraqi city of Baghdad, which is located in the center of the country. Damage has been reported in several villages, which have seen major telecommunication outages. The region where the quake struck is located along several major fault lines in Iran, and while the country has quakes daily, this is the deadliest one in recent history. In fact, in 2003 a 6.6 magnitude quake left 26,000 dead.

In 2005 a 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked the city of Zarand in the southeastern province of Kerman, killing at least 400 people, and in 2012 a pair of earthquakes jolted northwest Iran, killing at least 300 people.

Kurdistan Regional Government Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani tweeted, “A real earthquake has just added to the political, security, humanitarian and economic earthquakes to have hit Kurdistan & Iraq.”

Sean Parker on Facebook: “God only knows what it’s doing to our children’s brains”

0

Critics often criticize Facebook regarding privacy concerns. Most recently, the social network is working on combating fake news, fake accounts, and managing revenge porn. Not to mention the fact that Russia spent thousands of dollars in advertisements to manipulate Americans before the election. Mark Zuckerberg has been working on fixing all of that, but he may not have expected to receive criticism by Facebook Ex-President Sean Parker at an Axios event.

Sean Parker told the audience that he would not be surprised if Zuckerberg blocked him from Facebook after the interview. He delivered a fascinating look at how the company was designed with a single mission in mind. “How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?”

It was from that point on; Facebook created a system of “likes,” which was base don giving users “a little dopamine hit” in the form of positive reinforcement. Parker worries about how the resulting social media platform changed the culture and human psychology.

“The unintended consequences of a network when it grows to a billion or 2 billion people and … it literally changes your relationship with society, with each other … It probably interferes with productivity in weird ways. God only knows what it’s doing to our children’s brains … It’s a social-validation feedback loop … exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with, because you’re exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology.”

The positive reinforcements, in turn, motivate people to post more often, which generates more page views for Facebook and, therefore, more ad revenue for the company. Research has shown this to be true. A May 2016 study by UCLA researchers discovered that a teen’s brain reward regions become excited when teenagers see high numbers of “likes” on their photos.

While the study did not suggest social networks were as addictive as heroin, researchers did note that a large number of “likes” had a larger effect on the teens than just a few. So much so that social media can impact behavior. Researchers in the UCLA study, Lauren Graham explained, “If your teen’s friends are displaying positive behavior, then it’s fabulous that your teen will see that behavior and be influenced by it.”

Following the success of Facebook, other developers have gone on to use this idea of narcissistic tendencies to make money. For example, the rise of Instagram, Snapchat, and other platforms are additional ways for users to distract themselves from reality. Parker admits that he and Zuckerberg “understood this consciously” – suggesting they realized they were taking advantage of a person’s need for approval from others, “and we did it anyway.”
