Claims of Model Abuse Rock Fashion Week

At a Balenciaga casting call, casting directors Maida Gregori Boina and Rami Fernandes reportedly left over a hundred models waiting in a dark stairwell while they went to lunch for several hours.

One casting director spoke out about the abuse for the models involved int he abuse,  “In their usual fashion they shut the door, went to lunch and turned off the lights to the stairs leaving every girl with only the lights of their phones to see,” he wrote. “Not only was this sadistic and cruel it was dangerous and left more than a few of the girls I spoke with traumatised.”

Balenciaga issued a statement explaining they were ending their relationship with the casting company and sent apologies to the agencies of the models that were reportedly left to wait in the dark.

However, Boina and Fernandes are not taking the accusations sitting down and are telling their version of the story. In a statement to Business of FashionBoina claims that the models did not even wait in the stairwell for a very long time, nor were they treated poorly.

Via e-mail, the two casting directors told Business of Fashion their side of the story. “We personally ate our lunch in the casting facility and — without question — we did not lock the models in the stairwell and turn out the lights,” Boina explained.

“That would be completely inhumane. Throughout the entire process, we provided the most comfortable accommodations allowable based on the facilities provided.”

Allegedly, the building’s electricity went out for a “period of time,” which caused the models to wait in the dark as the reception area of Balenciaga’s headquarters was “unavailable.”

That said, last week, casting director James Scully posted on Instagram in which he called out the unethical Paris Fashion Week casting conditions. Scully is sticking to his version of the story and shared insight into the casting company’s history of “abuse.”

“What Maida and Rami did, they have been doing for a long time,” Scully said. “They are the king and queen of abuse. I’ve heard stories from girls who were left waiting for so long without food or water that they ordered a pizza, and Maida came out and started shouting at them and calling them pigs.”

Several models commented on Scully’s Instagram post confirming their negative experiences with the casting directors. Judith Schiltz, who says she was at the Balenciaga casting call claimed she did wait for several hours in the stairwell.

Another model confirmed the same experience. “Maida would request me season after season to do the exact same thing. Lock me in a room for 3 hours while everyone panicked, only to never, ever book me,” Mollie Gondi explained. “The apology to the agencies from the fashion house is laughable because the agents have known this for years and don’t think twice because they want their girl in the show.”

So true to my promise at #bofvoices that I would be a voice for any models, agents or all who see things wrong with this business I’m disappointed to come to Paris and hear that the usual suspects are up to the same tricks. I was very disturbed to hear from a number of girls this morning that yesterday at the Balenciaga casting Madia & Ramy (serial abusers) held a casting in which they made over 150 girls wait in a stairwell told them they would have to stay over 3 hours to be seen and not to leave. In their usual fashion they shut the door went to lunch and turned off the lights, to the stairs leaving every girl with only the lights of their phones to see. Not only was this sadistic and cruel it was dangerous and left more than a few of the girls I spoke with traumatized. Most of the girls have asked to have their options for Balenciaga cancelled as well as Hermes and Ellie Saab who they also cast for because they refuse to be treated like animals. Balenciaga part of Kering it is a public company and these houses need to know what the people they hire are doing on their behalf before a well deserved law suit comes their way. On top of that I have heard from several agents, some of whom are black that they have received mandate from Lanvin that they do not want to be presented with women of color. And another big house is trying to sneak 15 year olds into paris! It’s inconceivable to me that people have no regard for human decency or the lives and feelings of these girls, especially when too too many of these models are under the age of 18 and clearly not equipped to be here but god forbid well sacrifice anything or anyone for an exclusive right? If this behavior continues it’s gonna be a long cold week in paris. Please keep sharing your stories with me and I will continue to to share them for you. It seems to be the only way we can force change and give the power back to you models and agents where it rightfully belongs. And I encourage any and all to share this post #watchthisspace

Facebook Messenger Reactions Coming Soon?

0

Mark Zuckerberg’s company has released a bevy of features ranging from their WhatsApp’s Status to Instagram’s Stories. Illustrating Zuckerberg’s commitment to adding new features to his company’s social networking applications.

Now Facebook wants you to chat and react in the same way you see your friends’ messages that you would do on a typical Facebook newsfeed post.

According to reports, Facebook Messenger is currently testing a reactions option on chat message posts. When a user hovers over a message that their friends sent in a chat message, users get to pick emojis that best identify with their feelings. For example, users can give a message a thumbs up, thumbs down, dislike, and emojis. Everyone within the chat message will then be able to see the reaction.

Facebook says that this new feature will make the application more “fun and engaging.” Currently, the social networking company is testing this new feature with a small group of people and allowing users to share reactions that best represents how they feel in response a particular message.

At the moment not everyone has access as new reactions feature. However, if everything continues to go well, then messenger reactions will become available to everyone across the Facebook Messenger platform.

It is important to point out that Facebook’s messenger reactions are quite similar to iMessages recently added tap-based emoji.

But, ultimately the easier Facebook makes Messenger, the better the odds company can compete with other messaging apps including the newly publicly offered company Snap and the Snapchat app. It is typically a rule of thumb the easier an application is it is, the more likely users are going to use it.

By offering new reactions to the Facebook Messenger app users will be able to message and communicate in the same way that they respond to the current newsfeed system. That said, we will have to wait and see if Facebook will release this application to the public worldwide.

President Trump’s Move on H-1B Visas

0

You might not know what an H-1B visa is but, you are affected by it in many different ways. The H-1B visa is a government program that allows immigrants to enter the United States to work “temporarily.”

Earlier this year, President Trump announced a plan to stop the processing of H-1B visas, which could disrupt the plans of thousands of immigrant workers that serve in industries ranging from healthcare to technology.

One of the industries that take “advantage” of this program is the hospitality industry. This would include hotel chains, like Trump Hotels, Disney, Cruise Ships and many more hospitality companies. People under the H-1B visas in the hospitality industry are those men and women who change the sheets, wash the laundry, clean the bathrooms and prepare meals for a hotel, cruise, or other hospitality business.

Meanwhile, the healthcare industry also utilizes this program to cut costs. In fact, this program is also one of the most popular programs for Islands in the Caribbean Sea to find jobs for their people here in the United States. For example, some rural areas in America rely on immigrant medical professionals, according to a report by CNN Money. The H-1B visas allow Doctors to remain in the United States after their J-1 visas expire. J-1 visas permitted them to complete a residency program here. Moreover, the American Association of Medical Colleges reported that about 6000 medical trainees from foreign countries are in the United States. In the last 15 years, approximately 15,000 foreign doctors came here to serve underserved communities in America by using the H-1B program.

This year alone the United States will give out approximately 85,000 H-1B visas. They are currently offered by a lottery system and can take six months or longer just for the application to be reviewed.

It is planned that on April 3rd, 2017, President Trump will stop accepting premium payments of $1,225, which has in the past expedited the visa process to 15 days.

Also, Trump has accused companies of abusing the H-1B program as a way to hire foreign workers resulting in the loss of American jobs.

The slowing down of the process will allow officials to sort through the backlog of applications. One suggestion is to reform the programs in such a way that visas not be awarded by lottery but, by merit. At this point, we can only assume that means some government agency will pick the best of the best and base that on what we believe we need more of to best serve the United States. The STEM (science, technology, science, and engineering) program comes to mind.

Ancient Human Skulls May Provide Details in Early Human History

0

Several skulls found in Chena may reveal what the ancient humans who lived in the area were like before Homo sapiens took over.

Research had shown that Europe and Western Asian was dominated by Neanderthals before Homo sapiens arrived. However, remains from East and Central Asia have been hard to find.

Professor Erik Trinkaus, the researcher in the study published in the Journal of Science, said it was not impossible to say that the ancient skeletons that were discovered in Xuchang were linked to Denisovans.

However, it is unclear if they recent findings are connected to the Denisovans, a group known only by DNA analysis of bone fragments from Siberia.

Modern humans are classified as Homo sapiens, which originated out of Africa over 200,000 years ago before moving to Asia, Europe and other parts of the world 60,000 years ago. As they spread across the world, Homo sapiens displaced many preexisting types of ancient humans including the Neanderthals and the Denisovans.

The skulls from China date back 105,000 to 125,000 years ago and lack faces. However, researchers suggest there are similarities and differences to Neanderthals found elsewhere.

Professor Trinkaus explained to the BBC that there is a “certain amount of regional diversity at this time, but also there are trends in basic biology that are shared by everybody. And the supposed Neanderthal characteristics show that all these populations were interconnected.”

Overall, researchers are not sure what they discovered and how it connects to already recovered remains. However, Trinkaus asserts DNA evidence will be the key to understanding our ancient human history. “We must hope that ancient DNA can be recovered from these fossils to test whether they are Denisovans, or a distinct lineage.”

High School Makes $24 Million After SNAP Goes Public

0

A high school in California has made over $20 million dollars from the Snap initial public offering, the company behind Snapchat video sharing app.

The board of the Saint Francis High School in Mountain view invested $15,000 to Snap five years ago when the app was just getting started.

The school was invited to invest by one of the student’s parents, a venture capital investor, the school’s president explained in a letter issued to the school community on Thursday.

After Snap shares sold for $17 each in an IPO and rose 44% higher on Thursday afternoon, the school made millions off of their initial investment.

The website Quartz saying the company sold two-thirds of its shares at $17 each, to raise $24 million.

“The school’s investment in Snap — which this morning announced the completion of its IPO — has matured and given us a significant boost,” Simon Chiu, the school’s president said in a letter.

On Friday, shares of SNAP rose higher on Friday rising another 14% in mid-afternoon trading. According to a report by CNBC, NBCUniversal invested $500 million in SNAP. The investment comes as NBCUniversal continues to invest into digital media. NBC has previously invested in several millennial based digital media companies including Hulu, BuzzFeed, Vox and Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix to Premiere TWO Dave Chappelle Specials this Month

Netflix released a 27-second teaser for Dave Chappelle’s three-part Netflix release date on Thursday.

There’s not a lot of details to speak of in the teaser, but I guess that is the point of a teaser in the first place. That said, we now know Netflix is releasing two Chappelle specials from the comedian’s “personal comedy vault” on March 21st.

In the teaser and tweet, Netflix vaguely describes what the new Dave Chappelle will entail; “two specials, one event.” The two specials, according to Entertainment Weekly, include the March 2016 recording of The Age of Spin and the April 2015 Austin City limits show called Deep in the Heart of Texas. But is the “one event” in the tweet references that both shows will be released at once, or it could be another stand-up special?

Last November, Netflix released a press release announcing Chappelle’s deal. In addition, the comedian said he was prepping “three all-new stand-up specials” for Netflix.

“Dave Chappelle is a legendary voice in comedy — searing, vital, and now more than ever, essential,” Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary and Comedy, said in the press release last November. “Dave’s three new specials promise to be some of the most anticipated events in comedy, and we are honored he will mark his global return on Netflix.”

Dave Chappelle hosted Saturday Night Live last November, on the first episode of the NBC series since the presidential elecition. “I didn’t know that Donald Trump was going to win the election,” Chappelle said in his opening monologue. Chappelle added that he knew something was not going to go as the polls predicted.

“I know the whites,” Chappelle said. “You guys aren’t as full of surprises as you used to be. And I think I speak for all of black America when I say that we are all praying for Omarosa. I don’t even know what she’s doing in the news. But America’s done it. We’ve actually elected an internet troll as our president.”

Report: Chris Brown “Downward Spiraled” Using Cocaine, Molly and Xanax

A new investigative journalism report by Billboard reports Chris Brown’s alleged “downward spiraled” explained by former employees and people close to Brown.

Brown, who is currently planning a 33-date tour, is described at one point in the report as the “new Bobby Brown.” Others involved in the story expressed their fears that Brown tends to self-medicate his problems.

The Billboard report begins with a former employee’s account of a “Mondy morning around this time in 2016,” where the employee recounts Brown being upset with a delivery man as he strolled Instagram to look for updates on Karrueche Tran, Brown’s former girlfriend. At the time, Brown’s team told Billboard that he would stay away for three days in a row doing cocaine and “dabbling in” other drugs including molly, Xanax and lean.

“He will cuss you out and say, ‘Hey, man, I’m functioning. I’m going to get the work out.’ And he does,” someone still employed by Brown explained. “But [he’s not] the first functional star who thinks they can handle those powerful drugs. I got to say with all my heart, he’s dancing with death.”

Billboard also revealed that Brown was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder three years ago, according to a probation officer’s report. The report also pointed out that he had engaged in “inappropriate self-medicating,” adding that he also suffered from “untreated PTSD.”

A former female employee of Chris Brown explained that Brown does not hate women. Rather he’s a “very sweet, sensitive guy. But they’re an easy target, and he’s a bully. It’s not just women it’s everyone, and he can get away with it.”

Amazon Reveals What Caused the Internet Disruption

0

On Monday, Amazon’s hosting network mysteriously took out large portions of the internet, unsurprisingly causing first world problems for people across the country. Amazon was able to fix the issue and started searching for the cause of the problem. Evidently, that problem turned out to be a typo.

Amazon was taking a few servers offline to update their billing system when a single mistake caused parts of the internet to start crashing and knocking out the entire system.

Amazon explains that early Monday morning an authorized team member executed a command that was intended to shut down a few servers. The Amazon released a statement about what happened, “an authorized S3 team member using an established playbook executed a command which was intended to remove a small number of servers for one of the S3 subsystems that is used by the S3 billing process.”

Amazon added, “Unfortunately, one of the inputs to the command was entered incorrectly and a larger set of servers was removed than intended. The servers that were inadvertently removed supported two other S3 subsystems.”

An employee, who will probably always be known for making this mistake, entered the wrong command and shut down several major websites and apps. Fortunately, they were able to fix the problem, but this is a good reminder that Amazon’s hosting platform controls a significant portion of the internet.

No reports are suggesting how this has impacted Amazon sales. Good thing Amazon still has Alexa.

Snapchat: Snap Shares Rise More than 45%

0

Shares of Snap started trading more than 40% higher than their original IPO price, which was $17 per share. Now the company is trading at $24.94 by mid-day trading.

After months of rumors, Snap’s IPO has set the stage for the future of the camera company. Snap’s performance illustrates investors expectations for the company and that the corporation will continue to make money.

Yesterday, Snap was priced at $17 per share, giving the company a valuation of around $24 billion. Snap raised $3.4 billion in its IPO, presenting the company plenty of money to move forward and grow despite high costs to keep the business moving.

After opening at $24, shares of Snap reached $25 per share, but since then trading has fallen below that range. But, a stock price around $24 per share would value Snap at around $30 billion. In comparison, Twitter is worth a little more than $ 11 billion.

It is important to note that investors who are buying shares in Snap’s IPO are buying non-voting shares for the company. As a result, investors are hoping the company will continue to grow under the guidance of CEO Evan Spiegel and his team. Since, Spiegel and co-founder Bobby Murphy will have control of voting shares of the company and will, for the most part, not be controlled by Wall Street investors.

Essentially, the purpose of going public is to raise capital and Snap has a lot of expenses. Snap spends millions of dollars running their business. The company has a $1 billion contract with Amazon and a $2 billion contract with Google that will be paid out over the course of five years. Snap is also actively acquiring companies. In fact, last year Snap obtained an augmented reality company.

But the biggest question following Snap’s IPO is whether the company can make capital and advertisers receive a return on their investment by using Snap’s advertising products.
