In a twist that few saw coming, the Cleveland Browns’ playoff dreams were realized not by their star quarterback, Deshaun Watson, but by a seasoned veteran, Joe Flacco. When the Browns faced the New York Jets on December 28, 2023, it was Flacco who led the charge, throwing for 309 yards and three touchdowns, securing a 37-20 victory that clinched Cleveland’s second playoff berth since 2002.
Watson, expected to be the franchise savior, was sidelined with a season-ending shoulder injury, leaving the Browns in a precarious position. Enter Flacco, a 38-year-old quarterback who was unsigned at the start of the season. His late-season heroics sparked a four-game winning streak, turning the Browns’ fortunes around and earning him the AP NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.
Despite Watson’s earlier struggles, the Browns’ quest for stability at quarterback found an unlikely hero in Flacco. His ability to step up when it mattered most not only changed the narrative of Cleveland’s season but also highlighted the unpredictability of the NFL. The Browns’ late-season surge was a testament to Flacco’s leadership and resilience, proving that even a backup can become the centerpiece of a team’s success.
As the Browns look to build on this momentum, the story of how Flacco stepped in to fill the void left by Watson remains a compelling narrative of unexpected triumph. While Watson’s future with the team may still hold promise, it’s Flacco’s remarkable run that will be remembered as the defining moment of the Browns’ 2023 season.
That reversal is the story’s sharpest twist: Watson, the quarterback around whom the Browns built the franchise, was overtaken in narrative importance by Flacco, a 38-year-old veteran who was unsigned at the start of the 2023 season. New York entered that period struggling and effectively out of the 2023 playoff hunt, and AP reported on December 19, 2023, that Aaron Rodgers’ hoped-for return would wait until the following season because he was not 100% healthy.
NFL coverage later said Flacco led Cleveland on a four-game winning streak and an offensive surge after Watson’s injury, and Week 17 reporting noted that the Browns could clinch with a win over the Jets because of “the recent heroics” of Flacco. Cleveland beat New York 37-20 on December 28, 2023, clinching only its second playoff berth since 2002, and Flacco threw for 309 yards and 3 touchdowns in the win.
Even in retrospective coverage, NFL and ESPN reporting emphasized that Cleveland had craved stability at quarterback “much of the season, even when Deshaun Watson played earlier in the year,” and later ESPN analysis said Watson was “well below expectations” through 17 Browns starts. com quoted Flacco saying he was “super grateful” for the opportunity, a line that reflected how improbable his role had become after joining the Browns only after Watson’s season-ending injury.
NFL and AP coverage described it as an “unlikely” postseason push, with the Browns reaching 11 wins despite losing Watson earlier in the year to season-ending shoulder surgery. Cleveland scored a season-high 37 points against New York, and Flacco’s 309 passing yards came in a game where the Browns’ offense finally looked explosive rather than patched together.
com later noted that Flacco threw 3 touchdown passes against the Jets, his third such performance in four games, and that Cleveland’s late-season burst was strong enough for him to win AP NFL Comeback Player of the Year after just five starts. The original framing about Watson leading a “surprising Browns” team into a Jets game appears to belong to an older pregame moment, but the most newsworthy reporting that matters now centers on what happened next.
