Bill Cosby’s Spokesman Calls Eddie Murphy a “Hollywood Slave”

0

Over the weekend, Saturday Night Live host Eddie Murphy returned to the sketch series after 35 years. Murphy took to 30 Rockefeller Plaza with some of his iconic characters including Buckwheat and Gumby. That said, not everyone enjoyed Murphy’s return to Saturday Night Live. Case in point, Eddie Murphy’s monologue joe that asked, “Who is America’s dad now?”, did not settle well with Bill Cosby.

The joke directly referred to Cosby being in jail while Murphy was a “boring, stay-at-home house dad,” and Cosby spokesperson Andrew Wyatt responded back. In a statement posted on social media, Wyatt called the joke as “disparaging” and declared that Cosby had “broke[n] color barriers in the Entertainment Industry so that Blacks like Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappell, Kevin Hart, and et al., could have an opportunity to showcase their talents for many generations to come.”

The public statement continued by calling Murphy as a “Hollywood Slave” and suggested jokes like the previously mentioned are “bringing all of us down together.

You can read the full statement below:

“Mr. Cosby became the first Black to win an Emmy for his role in I Spy and Mr. Cosby broke color barriers in the Entertainment Industry, so that Blacks like Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappell, Kevin Hart and et al., could have an opportunity to showcase their talents for many generations to come. It is sad that Mr. Murphy would take this glorious moment of returning to SNL and make disparaging remarks against Mr. Cosby. One would think that Mr. Murphy was given his freedom to leave the plantation, so that he could make his own decisions; but he decided to sell himself back to being a Hollywood Slave. Stepin Fetchit plus cooning equals the destruction of Black Men in Hollywood. Remember, Mr. Murphy, that Bill Cosby became legendary because he used comedy to humanize all races, religions and genders; but your attacking Mr. Cosby helps you embark on just becoming click bait. Hopefully, you will be amenable to having a meeting of the minds conversation, in order to discuss how we can use our collective platforms to enhance Black people rather than bringing all of us down together.”

Bill Cosby is currently serving a 3-10 year prison sentence following his sexual assault conviction. During his only interview since entering prison, he declared he will never express remorse in the event he comes up for parole.

In other entertainment news, Eddie Murphy has recently finished filming his sequel to ‘Coming 2 America’ in Atlanta, Georgia.

Boeing Fires CEO Dennis Muilenburg

0

On Monday morning, Boeing announced the firing of the company’s CEO. To replace Muilenburg, Boeing named David Calhoun. Calhoun is currently the chairman of Boeing’s board of directors. Chief Financial Officer Greg Smith will serve as the company’s interim CEO until Calhoun takes on the role on January 13th.

“I strongly believe in the future of Boeing and the 737 MAX. I am honored to lead this great company and the 150,000 dedicated employees who are working hard to create the future of aviation,” Calhoun said in a statement.

In a statement, Boeing said the company “will operate with a renewed commitment to full transparency, including effective and proactive communication with the FAA, other global regulators and its customers.”

“The Board determined that a change in leadership was necessary to restore confidence in the company moving forward and that we will proceed with a renewed commitment to full transparency, including effective and proactive communications with the FAA, other global regulators, and our customers,” Smith said in a note to employees.

“Over the next few weeks as we transition to new leadership, I am committed to ensuring above all that we meet the needs of our stakeholders – especially our regulators, customers, and employees – with transparency and humility,” Smith added.

Muilenburg’s firing takes place only a few days after the Boeing Starliner’s failed mission to the International Space Sation. The spacecraft aborted the mission after an “automation” error causing the Starliner to not reach the correct orbit, according to NASA officials. NASA officials added the uncrewed spacecraft believed the time was “different than it actually was.”

But, Starliner is only one of a series of missteps for the company. Boeing revealed they were suspending the production of 737 Max jets, which have been grounded since March 2019 following two deadly crashes, which killed nearly 346 people. The company admitted their automatic flight control system played a part in the fatal 737 Max Jets crashes.

China: U.S. Space Force is a ‘Direct Threat’ to Space Peace

0

China calls out the recently devised U.S. Space Force as a “direct threat to outer space peace and security.”

According to ABC News, Foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters China is “Deeply concerned about it and resolutely opposed to it.”

“The relevant U.S. actions are a serious violation of the international consensus on the peaceful use of outer space, undermine global strategic balance and stability, and pose a direct threat to outer space peace and security,” Geng said at a regular briefing.

China Space Program

China’s space program first launched in 2003 and has progressed quickly in the last decade. Last February, the United States Pentagon claimed China and Russia had begun significant efforts to develop technology that could disrupt American satellites in a crisis or military conflict. In fact, in 2007, China launched a missile strike against one of its satellites, creating a large amount of space debris. Geng ignored the previously mentioned concerns saying they are “unfounded counter-charges,” which were provided with justification to the United States. Geng continues by saying the weaponization of space, and international treaties about space need to be negotiated.

“We hope that the international community, especially the major powers concerned, will adopt a cautious and responsible attitude to prevent outer space from becoming a new battlefield and work together to maintain lasting peace and tranquility in outer space,” he said.

What is Space Force?

The United States created Space Force as a way to effectively organize the defense of United States interest in space, including but not limited to satellites for navigation and communication. The Space Force was not created to launch troops in space.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper told reporters on Friday Space has “evolved into a war-fighting domain of its own.”

Much of the American economy relies on technology in space, including the Global Positioning System (GPS), which provides navigation services than civilians. China has launched a similar network of a satellite called the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, created from 42 separate satellite launches.

Netflix Lost 1 Million Subscribers to Disney+ (Report)

0

Disney+ made an impact on the streaming industry, according to a recent Wall Street analyst report saying that the new streaming platform had approximately 24 million subscribers by the end of November 2019, which resulted in a net loss for Netflix.

The report came from Cowen & Co., estimating approximately 1 million of Netflix’s U.S. subscribers canceled their subscriptions in favor of Disney+, which has received high praise since launching on November 12th, according to reports.

Disney+ launched with Star Wars series ‘The Mandalorian’ and has aggressively promoted their proprietary series including Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and Disney films, which has helped boost Disney’s platform. Disney previously announced 10 million users signed for Disney+ the day after the service launched.

According to the report, approximately 19.4 million consumers subscribed to both Netflix and Disney+, indicating an 80% overlap between the two platforms.

Netflix has had a mixed year for the streaming platform. Netflix, which raised its prices earlier in the year, missed its U.S. subscriber forecast in the company’s third-quarter and reported a loss of 126,000 U.S. subscribers in Q2.

Disney started removing some of its popular productions off of Netflix leading up to the launch of Disney+. Disney-branded projects including ‘Daredevil’ and ‘January Jones’ were canceled shortly after Disney+ was announced.

While the Cowen report is good news for Disney+, a large number of their users are reportedly not paying for the service. Disney signed a deal with Verizon, which allowed for Verizon customers with the carrier’s unlimited data plan to receive a free year of Disney+, and Cowen estimated around a third of Disney+’s U.S. subscribers were taking advantage of that deal.

This news comes after Netflix’s Chief Creative Officer commented on Disney+’s launch.

Netflix’s Ted Sarandos gave his response to Disney+’s launch during a talk at the Paley Center’s International Council Summit in New York.

“We’ve been competing with Disney and all these other folks who are coming into this from the beginning,” he said. “For us, nothing really changes. We’ve always been customer-first and we don’t really get distracted by competition. We figured at some point everyone would get into this business.”

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer add that he’s “frankly surprised it took Disney and other people this long to go down this path. It’s a hard change. These companies that have been built on making and selling content to other people, can they actually make more money or do better in business selling it directly to the consumer? … It’s a hard bet, and it’s a bet-the-farm one.”

50% of Americans Will Be Obese By 2030 (STUDY)

0

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine finds by 2030, nearly 50% of Americans will qualify as obese. The study asserts more than half of all Americans in 29 states, mostly located in the South and Midwest, are projected to be obese.

The study released on Wednesday predicts 48.9% of Americans will be obese within a decade, and no state is expected to have less than 35% of their population qualify as obese.

What is obesity?

Obesity suggests a person having too much body fat. Obesity is different than a person being overweight, which means weighing too much. While the weight may come from muscle, bone, fat, or body water, both obesity and overweight say that an individual’s weight is higher than what’s considered healthy for his or her height.

What is severe obesity?

Severe obesity is approximately 100 pounds overweight. The study expects the number of people who are severely obese will increase by 2030, to a rate of 25% of the total U.S.population. Twenty-five states are projected to have more than 25% of their population to reach severe obesity.

The study suggested specific subpopulations are more at risk for severe obesity. These particular groups include women, non-Hispanic black adults, and low-income adults.

How to lose weight?

Those individuals who are interested in losing weight are suggested to consume fewer calories, make healthy food choices, get more exercise, and monitoring weight may help reduce body weight.

The study used data from national surveys to analyze the reported BMI data from 6 million U.S. adults.

Facebook Acquires Cloud-Gaming Company PlayGiga

0

Facebook acquires Spanish cloud gaming company PlayGiga, which offers services across Europe, including Italy, Argentina, and Spain. The purchase was confirmed by Facebook to CNBC, following reports last week that claimed the deal was close valued at around $78 million.

IN a tweet confirming the news, Facebook Gaming’s official twitter account tweeted, “We’re thrilled to welcome @PlayGigaOficial to the Facebook Gaming team. We’ll decline further comment for now.” A message on PlayGiga’s site reads the team is “moving on to something new” but confirmed to The Verge they will continue working on cloud gaming.

Facebook’s deal comes as the cloud gaming industry is growing. Google launched Stadia service, while Microsoft is working on xCloud platform. Sony has a cloud gaming service out now called Playstation Now, which has been available for a few years now.

PlayGiga is a far smaller cloud gaming company, but before the acquisition, the company had plans to expand. Variety explains that it was previously planning a launch in the Middle East and explored offering its 300 game library in Sweden, Austria, the Netherlands, and Guatemala. There is no report on whether or not Facebook will use the business deal to launch a gaming service of their own. Facebook is presumably in a better position to build a streaming gaming company after acquiring PlayGiga.

Facebook has focused its attention on the gaming industry. Last March 2019, the social media company added a “Gaming” section to their menu bar, which brought live-streaming to the platform, as well as a collection of games. Mark Zuckerberg‘s company also has an interest in virtual reality gaming since the company acquired Oculus in 2014. The company recently amassed over 700 million of its users to visit Facebook’s gaming content each month.

Tekashi69 Sentenced to 2 Years After Snitching Against Nine Trey Gang

0

On Wednesday, rapper and Instagram star Tekashi69 was sentenced to two years in prison by a federal judge. The judge did give the rapper credit for sending several of his former Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods to prison.

Tekashi69, otherwise known as Daniel Hernandez, spent 13 months in federal jail, and that time will count towards his sentence. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan described to the New York Times as “extraordinary” and extremely useful.” However, the federal judge, Paul A. Engelmayer, reported the conduct described by Tekashi69 as “too violent” to justify an immediate release from police custody.

Tekashi69 will get out soon, but it begs the question – what will happen to Daniel Hernandez? Prosectors report he is at risk of being killed because the Nine Trey Gang may want to get revenge. Mr. Hernandez says upon his release that he is not interested in getting into the federal witness protection program. In fact, in a letter, he told the court he plans to keep performing after getting released.

Tekashi69 was arrested in November 2018 after spending years flashing his gangster lifestyle on social media and building a public persona of a hustler and gang leader. With his famous face tattoos and brightly colored hair, Mr. Hernandez became viral after live streaming to millions of his fans with money and guns. He would often engage in quarrels on Instagram and taunted the police on social media.

But Tekashi69’s lifestyle came to an end when he was arrested on firearms and racketeering charges, which carried a sentence of at least 47 years if he were convicted of the crimes mentioned above. It did not take a lot of time for Tekashi69 to snitch on the Nine Trey gang. Within 24 hours, Daniel Hernandez made a deal with the government, agreeing to plead guilty and testify against two co-defendants.

“I was weak. I was easily influenced. I can’t believe that was me,” Tekashi69 said while crying at the sentencing hearing. “There is no apology good enough.”

During his sentencing hearing, he explained to the judge he had just seen his biological father in the courtroom for the first time since third grade. His biological father would attempt to make a statement, but Judge Engelmayer refused.

Tekashi69’s decision to become a snitch was a major surprise for a career that imitated the street life mentality, where becoming a witness against your fellow gang members is immoral. He testified in a federal courtroom in Manhattan and laid out the details of the Nine Trey gang for a jury, which later convicted two of his co-defendants.

“Hernandez provided the government with critical insight into the structure and organization of the gang,” the government addressed to Judge Engelmayer last week, seeking mercy on Mr. Hernandez’s side.

Due to Hernandez’s decision to testify, many other gang members charged in the case decided to plead guilty as well.

“The weight of the evidence, coupled with the knowledge that Hernandez was ready, willing and able to testify to describe the acts of violence and how they were related to Nine Trey were significant factors in the co-defendants’ decisions to plead guilty,” prosecutors wrote.

Tekashi69 apologized for his conduct, saying, “I still consider myself a role model to millions of people as an artist, a celebrity, and as a human being. I’m happy that the public was able to witness me dealing with the consequences of my actions because I feel like it sheds light on what can come from gang affiliation.”

Trump Impeachment: Donald Trump’s Approval Rating Rises

0

The United States House of Representatives will vote to impeach President Donald Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of justice of Congress; both charges are linked to his actions surrounding a July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

It is important to note that despite the move towards impeachment, there is evidence suggesting public impeachment proceedings could be helping President Donald Trump. On Wednesday, a new Gallup poll shows public opinion is shifting regarding President Trump’s conduct.

  1. President Donald Trump’s approval rating has grown to 45% from 39%.
  2. Support for Trump’s impeachment has dropped to 46% from 52%

The details from the report illustrate American’s support for impeachment is waning. That said, Donald Trump’s current numbers on impeachment closely align with Richard Nixon in the spring of 1974. Richard Nixon would later resign before the House Judiciary Committee came to a vote.

Donald Trump Letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Donald Trump sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on eve of impeachment vote a letter. In the letter, Trump calls the Impeachment the Salem Witch Trials and questioned whether Pelosi prays for him.

The letter says, “This impeachment represents an unprecedented and unconstitutional abuse of power by Democrat Lawmakers, unequaled in nearly two and a half centuries of American legislative history.”

President Trump adds, “Even worse than offending the Founding Fathers, you are offending Americans of faith by continually saying you pray for the President when you know this statement is not true, unless it is meant in a negative sense.”

Whistleblower complaint

A whistleblower complaint about Donald Trump’s actions on July 25th caused the Impeachment proceeds, and it became clear Trump’s behavior could be grounds for impeachment.

Before the whistleblower complaint, Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California had no plans of impeaching President Donald Trump. In an interview with the Washington Post magazine, she said, “Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.”

But that all changed when the whistleblower complaint surfaced.
