Looking for a New Job? Walmart to Hire 34,000 Jobs

2

Following Amazon’s recent announcement that the e-commerce giant will be hiring over 100,000 jobs by 2018, Walmart announced they plan to hire 34,000 jobs and improve training for their associates.

On Tuesday Walmart revealed that they will be investing in their company and in turn will be hiring 34,000 jobs. How is the company going to achieve their new year’s resolution? According to their press release, the company explains that they will continue to expand and improve their stores and their online shopping platform. In fact, the company reports that they are planning on nearly $7 billion in capital investments. The investments will fund construction, remodeling of stores and distribution centers, along with their new service Online Grocery Pickup.

But, Walmart is not stopping there. The company also outlines a new plan that will provide training programs for more than 200,000 current employees. Furthermore, Walmart will launch 160 new training facilities around the United States. Associates will be able to receive up to 6 weeks of speciality training. At these training sessions, the company plans on training supervisors and assistant store managers leadership, retail management skills and how to run store departments.

“The training is designed to help associates be successful in their careers and in meeting the changing needs of customers,” Walmart explained on their website.

In addition, the Walmart Foundation alongside the U.S. Conference of Mayors will be announcing grants to help increase innovation in the textile manufacturing industry. The grant program will be accomplished through the U.S. Manufacturing Innovation Fund, which was launched in 2014 in order to focus on the development of U.S. manufactured products. Moreover, Walmart plans on providing $10 million in grants over the course of five years.

Walmart also announced that they will continue to purchase an additional $250 billion in American-made products, which the company estimates will help create one million jobs.

Walmart executive vice president for corporate affairs explained that Walmart is investing to “better serve customers”.

“With a presence in thousands of communities and a vast supplier network, we know we play an important role in supporting and creating American jobs. Our 2017 plans to grow our business – and our support for innovation in the textile industry – will have a meaningful impact across the county,” Bartlett added.

Walmart is not the only company helping put Americans back to work. Amazon announced last week that the company the company is focused on creating jobs in the United States and plans on expanding their workforce from 180,00 to 280,00 by next year.

Eight People Have As Much Money As Half of the World’s Poorest People

0

A new report by Oxfam, an international organization focused on decreasing global poverty, has revealed that eight men own as much money as the poorest half of the world. In fact, researchers point out that in the next two decades, 500 people will transfer over 2 trillion in assets to their heirs, which is more than the entire GDP of India, a country with 1.3 billion.

Not to mention, the entire income for the poorest 10% of the people int he world has increased by only $3 per year from 1988 to 2011. Meanwhile, the richest 1% income has increased 182 times as much. Furthermore, economist Thomas Piketty explains in the Oxfam report that the income of the bottom 50% has not grown, while the top 1% increased their income by 300%.

Oxfam researchers explain that this misalignment in fortune is based on corporations who are working for their top executives, companies paying lower wages for workers, corporations ability to avoid paying taxes, and lobbying firms influencing government officials.

For example, Oxfam explains that a multi-national corporation’s ability to influence government through lobbyists makes it difficult for smaller businesses to compete and in turn, consumers are forced to pay more for goods and services.

In addition, researchers explain that tax havens allow for businesses and the ultra wealthy to pay as little tax as possible. For instance, according to the report, the top rate of income tax was 70% in the 1980s. Now, the top income tax rate is now 40%. Not to mention, the report points out that a large majority of taxes are never actually collected.

Ultimately, in the report titled, “An Economy for the 99%” Oxfam researchers explain that the world’s economy should shift their focus from the top 1% and focus on a business model that benefits everyone.

“The very design of our economies and the principles of our economics have taken us to this extreme, unsustainable and unjust point,” Oxfam explains in their study. “Our economy must stop excessively rewarding those at the top and start working for all people,” Oxfam added.

This news comes after a recent study examining millennials in the US and the financial situation many teens and young adults are currently facing. In the study researchers found that millennials are making $10,000 less than baby boomers did at that age.

“Moderate Levels” of Screen Time is Good for a Teen’s Well-Being

0

How much screen time is too much screen time? University of Oxford researchers have found that “moderate amounts of screen time” is not bad for teens. Researchers explain that there is a point between high and low use of social media that can be beneficial to teens, a phenomenon researchers call the Goldilocks theory.

Researchers surveyed 120,000 15 year olds in Britain. To test their hypothesis researchers began by asking them how they feel about technology and how much time they spent on digital devices. Scientists found that nearly 99.9% of all teens spent some time using at least one type of digital technology every day. Whether it be watching TV shows, movies or engaging on social media, teenagers spent time on some sort of digital device.

Then researchers tested their Goldilocks theory and found that the more time a teen spends in front a screen, their well-being also increased. However, there was a tipping point. After a certain amount of time, too much screen time had a negative impact.

How much screen time is too much? Researchers estimated the moderate amount of screen is approximately:

  • 100 minutes for weekday video games
  • 117 for weekday smartphone use
  • 3 hours 41 minutes for videos during the week days
  • 4 hours 17 minutes for computer recreational purposes

With that being said, researchers found that those limits increased on the weekends. Ultimately, the study’s author argue that “moderate” levels of digital screen use should be less on the weekdays to encourage socializing and learning.

In a statement, Dr. Andrew Przybylski, the lead author in the study explained, “Overall we found that modern use of digital technology is not intrinsically harmful and may have advantages in a connected world unless digital devices are overused or interfere with schoolwork or afterschool activities.”

Dr. Andrew Przybylski added, “Our research suggests that some connectivity is probably better than none and there are moderate levels that as in the story of Goldilocks are “just right”for young people.”

Recent research has shown that teens are using far less drugs than ever before and instead many teens are spending more time in front of a digital screen. In fact, a UCLA study analyzing teens using an application similar to Instagram found the reward pathway in the brain becomes activated when receives sees a large number likes. Ultimately, researchers explained that if a teen’s friends on social media are exhibiting positive behavior, it will rub off on them. However, UCLA researchers argued that it is still important for parents to monitor what they child is doing on social media.

Pittsburgh Steelers’ Antonio Brown Goes Live on Facebook Sparking Controversy

0

While Facebook is actively working on combating fake news with the Journalism Project, and new news standards in Germany, the social network was able to broadcast an inside look into the Pittsburgh Steelers locker room.

On Sunday, the Steelers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 18-16. Then, during the post game celebration wide-receiver Antonio Brown grabbed his phone and went live on Facebook.

The 14-minute behind the scenes live stream quickly went viral as it showed an inside look into the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the video the Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was heard addressing the team.

“When you get to this point in the journey, not a lot needs to be said,” said Tomlin told the team in the video.

“Let’s say very little moving forward. Let’s start our preparations. We spotted those ******** a day and a half. They played yesterday. Our game got moved to tonight. We gonna touch down at 4 o’clock in the f***** morning. So be it. We’ll be ready for that ass. But you ain’t gotta tell them we coming. The chest pounding. Keep a low profile.”

A few seconds later you can hear someone say “keep calm on social media” while Antonio Brown is broadcasting live on Facebook.

A former teammate of Antonio Brown was not that impressed with Brown’s decision to go live on Facebook. Clark took to ESPN’s First Take to express his frustration with Brown and social media saying, “He’s so self-absorbed,” Clark said describing Antonio Brown’s personality. “He’s so about what he’s doing, he’s so about Antonio Brown that it’s not that he’s missing the message that coach is giving, its that he genuinely does not care that the message is being given. He’s so involved in his bubble that he doesn’t even know what’s going on behind him. He’s not paying attention to the damage that it can cause.”

Unfortunately for Steelers fans the video has since been removed by Facebook. Too bad Antonio Brown is not getting compensated for the millions of views the video racked as a result, as Facebook is rumored start sharing advertising revenue with publishers.

Facebook Takes Their War Against Fake News to Germany

0

Last December, Germany lawmakers proposed charging Facebook, and other platforms that share content, a €500,000 for every fake news story. Then on Sunday, Facebook announced that they will be introducing a new program to combat fake news in Germany.

The new program in Germany included:

  • Making it easier to report fake news
  • Partnering with third party fact checking auditors
  • Making it difficult for fake websites to go viral on the social network

Ultimately, fake news still has the ability to be shared on the social network. But, Facebook will include an explicit warning.

“However, a warning is displayed that the truth content of the contribution is questioned. As soon as a contribution has been marked with a warning, it can no longer be made or highlighted,” Facebook explained in a blog post that was Google translated.

Since the 2016 US Presidential election the social network Facebook has been actively working on combating fake news. From their new reporting programs to a Journalism initiative to encourage critical news reading, Mark Zuckerberg is focused on creating a social network that encourages real and accurate reporting.

“The problems here are complex, both technically and philosophically,” Mr. Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page. “We believe in giving people a voice, which means erring on the side of letting people share what they want whenever possible.”

The first part of Facebook’s program was a four point plan. The plan included making it easer for users to report fake news, down ranking disputed news stories, changing the algorithm to decrease the reach of news websites, and getting rid of spoof websites.

The second part of the fake news battle included a new initiative, “The Facebook Journalism Project“. The new project included training tools for journalists and Facebook users.

In addition, earlier this month Facebook hired CNN’s Campbell Brown to lead the social network’s news division. Facebook explained that Mrs. Brown was not hired to act as a reporter or editor but, instead help Facebook work with other news networks.

Why is Germany focused on combating fake news? Well, Germany is going to hold elections later on this year.

Study: Millennials Make 20% Less Than Baby Boomers Did

0

While millennials may love to Snapchat, a new study shows millennials earn less than baby boomers did.

A new report by the Young Invincibles titled “Financial Health of Young Americans” reveal the financial constraints millennials are now facing. In their 30 page report, researchers have found that millennial net worth is 50% less than Baby Boomers. In addition, millennials are learning 20% less than the Baby Boomers at that time. In fact, researchers found that millennials today earn $10,000 less per year than young adults in 1989. Furthermore, the study pointed out that a young adult without a college degree in 1989 earned as much as someone with a college graduate with student loans today.

Millennials student debt

Researchers explain that going to college is one of the best investments a young adult can make nowadays. However, student debt negatively impacts the benefits of going to college.

“College graduates with student debt have a lower net wealth than those with only a high school education,” researchers explained.

Consequently, millennials without student loan debt were able to save twice as much for retirement than their college graduated student loan having counterparts.

Millennials race gap

Researchers for the Young Invincibles also found that there were major gaps between young people of color and young white Americans. In fact, the study showed that African Americans and Latinos earned far less than young white adults.

“Young African Americans and Latinos earn 57 cents and 64 cents, respectively, for every dollar earned by young whites,” the study revealed.

In addition, since 1989 the median net wealth for African Americans has actually declined by nearly 33% over the past 28 years. On the contrary, Latinos are earning more money than they did 25 years ago.

How to fix the problem

Higher education

The Young Invincibles report recommends states reinvest in higher education programs and provide debt-free college degrees in order for millennials to financially do well. In addition, there should be programs to provide more middle-skill jobs in order to grow the middle class. The study points out that two year programs and apprenticeships provide more than 50% of all available jobs and currently employers are struggling to find qualified candidates for those positions.

Higher completion rates

Also, the study recommends that universities should push for higher completion rates because a large amount of students are unable to graduate. Consequently, millennials are leaving college with student loans debt without the possibility of a return on their investment.

Higher minimum wage

In addition, the study suggests the Federal government increase the federal minimum wage to $12 per hour since over 70% of all minimum wage jobs are held by 16 to 34 year olds.

Airbus CEO Reveals ‘Flying Car’ Prototype is Coming Soon

0

While Amazon is currently working on developing airborne warehouses and flying drones to deliver packages. One Aerospace company has their eyes set on developing flying cars.

The CEO of Airbus, Tom Enders, told an audience at the DLD digital conference in Munich that the company is working on a flying car with a prototype demonstration coming soon, according to Reuters.

“One hundred years ago, urban transport went underground, now we have the technological wherewithal to go above ground,” Enders explained. “We are in an experimentation phase, we take this development very seriously,” he added.

Enders revealed that the company is currently testing and plans on demonstrating a single person flying car by the end of 2017.

Ultimately, Enders explains that a huge benefit is the reduction of costs cities have to pay to upkeep their infrastructure. With flying cars, city officials do not have to worry about concrete or the safety of bridges and roads.

What is Airbus Project Vahana?

Airbus created a new division called their Urban Air Mobility program last year. The goal of the new division is to explore new ways to transport individuals. The company plans on developing flying taxis called CityAirbus, that will allow for men and women to call for a flying taxi with a smart phone app. The entire development program is called “Project Vahana”.

The company explained in a blog post last September  that, the new flying car will be self-piloted that “can automatically detect and avoid obstacles and other aircraft.”

Uber’s Flying Taxi Program

It’s important to point out that Airbus is not the only company interested in developing flying cars. Last year, Uber announced that they were developing an on-demand flying taxi.

“A network of small, electric aircraft that take off and land vertically (called VTOL aircraft for Vertical Take-off and Landing, and pronounced vee-tol), will enable rapid, reliable transportation between suburbs and cities and, ultimately, within cities,” the Uber explained in a Medium post.

Just as Airbus explained, Uber’s goal is to reduce the infrastructure costs the government has to pay every year to maintain bridges and roads.

But, it is important to point out that before any flying cars take over city skies, they would have to first comply with the Federal Aviation Administration Agency, which already places strict restrictions on Amazon’s self-flying drone program.

In addition, Uber revealed their biggest issue is that there are not enough places within cities for flying cars to land – “if VTOLs are going to achieve close to their full potential, infrastructure will need to be added.”

Google Adsense Reveals a New Feature: Meet ‘Ad Balance’

0

On Friday, Google Adsense released a new feature, Ad balance, to help improve advertising and user experience for their publishers and their users.

According to a blog posting, Ad Balance allow for publishers to reduce the number of ads on a page. Google explains that it is about finding the right mixture between advertising, content and user experience.

How does Google’s new feature work?

The new feature will allow for users to see how changes in the number of ads affect how much a publisher can make. But, ultimately it is about finding the balance.

“Ad balance lets you reduce the number of ads you show to your users. Finding the right balance between the number of ads you show and the user experience on your site can lead to better overall engagement with your content,” Google explained.

“With Ad balance, you’re able to see how changes in the volume of ads you show affect your earnings, and find the balance that makes the most sense for you and your users,” Google added.

How does Ad Balance work?

Google Adsense Ad Balance
Google.com

Ad Balance works by showing users the best-performing ads instead of all of the ads. However, Google explains that this could result in a slight drop in earnings. But, Adsense does point out that the change in user experience could also lead to an increase in profits.

“These changes may result in an overall earnings increase, since an improvement of the user experience often leads to users staying longer on your site and engaging with more of your content,” Google explains.

Adsense’s Ad Balance is the first feature following Google’s AdSense Labs announcement. AdSense Labs was first announced on June 2016 with two main goals: showing fewer advertisements and Inline ads. Ad Balance is accomplished the first goal. Google’s next Lab will be Inline Ads, which are 320×100 ad units that are algorithmically inserted within a mobile website as a user scrolls down through the page.

American Apparel Stores Will Close But, The Brand is Not Going Anywhere

0

Gildan Activewear announced that they won the auction to purchase the American Apparel brand for $88 million but, will reportedly close over 100 stores.

Following the American Apparel Brand bankruptcy, Gildan Activewear, a Montreal company, has acquired the American Apparel brand and the deal is set to close next month. According to multiple outlets including Reuters, several companies including Amazon and Forever 21 expressed interest in purchasing the clothing company. But, before the deal is official, the winning Gildan bid will go before a bankruptcy judge this week.

“We are excited to be moving forward with this acquisition,” Glenn Chamandy, the President and CEO of Gildan explained in a statement. “The American Apparel® brand will be a strong complementary addition to our growing brand portfolio. We see strong potential to grow American Apparel sales by leveraging our extensive printwear distribution networks in North America and internationally to drive further market share penetration in the fashion basics segment of these markets.”

What is American Apparel?

Founded in 1989 by Dov Charney, the company was part clothing manufacturer and part fashion designer company based out of Los Angeles, California. In 2007, the company was worth $1 billion but, several years later the company was struggling to make ends meet. In fact by 2015 the company was unable make a profit in over six years. Then in 2015 American Apparel filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and by 2017, Gildan acquired the company for $88 million.

American Apparel has been frequently involved in pop culture. From Kanye West’s 2010 album, where the rapper calls the company out by name in the song “Gorgeous” to the 2014 song by 5 Seconds of Summer where the band says “You look so perfect standing there in my American Apparel underwear” in the hit single “She Looks So Perfect”.

American Apparel Controversy

But, American Apparel did run into several bouts of controversy. In 2009, the former CEO revealed in an interview with Conde Nast Portfolio that ultimately, sex sells.

“Fashion is about sexuality,” Charvney explained. “It’s hard to be fashionable and sanitize it and take the sexuality out of it. It’s tasteful. It’s utility — it’s not Frederick’s of Hollywood. It has to make you feel attractive. Sex makes you feel beautiful or handsome.”

In addition, in the middle of an interview with the now defunct Jane magazine, Charney masterbated in front of Claudine Ko, the author of the story.

“Masturbation in front of women is underrated. It’s much easier on the woman,” Charney explained. “She gets to watch; it’s a sensual experience that doesn’t involve a man violating a woman, yet once the man has his release, it’s over and you can talk to the guy.”

Scientists Discover How to Create Killer Mice

0

In a study titled Hungry and angry: could we survive a zombie apocalypse? published in the journal “The Lancet Neurology” scientists explained that abnormal predatory behavior could be caused by an overactive amygdala, hypothalamus, thalamus along with a malfunctioning orbital frontal cortex. Now, new research focusing on the amygdala illustrates the power of the central amygdala.

In the new study published in Cell titled, “Integrated Control of Predatory Hunting by the Central Nucleus of the Amygdala” researchers were able to turn mice into killers.

According to the study, researchers were able to trigger parts of the Central Amygdala causing mice to start hunting live and artificial prey. In addition, researchers found that by stimulating the Central Amygdala researchers are able to control biting attacks, attack movements, and goal directed behavior.

Wenfei Han, Luis A. Tellez, and their team of researchers explained that the mechanisms that control predatory behavior is not currently understood. However, with their research they explain that the central nucleus of the amygdala plays a major role in hunting and aggressive behavior.

“Our findings delineate a neural network that integrates distinct behavioral modules and suggest that central amygdala neurons instruct predatory hunting across jawed vertebrates,” the researchers explained.

Zombie Mice?

Many people are call this study an example of zombie mice. But, if zombies did take over the world due a malfunctioning central amygdala, how long would humanity survive? Well, researchers at the University of Leicester have studied the “zombie epidemic” and published their results in the “Journal of Physics Special Topics” and found that by the 100th day only 100 people would be left.

While zombies have not taken over the world, researchers found that synthetic marijuana was the cause of a reported ‘zombie outbreak’ in New York City. In fact, over 30 people were hospitalized are smoking synthetic cannabinoids.
