Snapchat Releases ‘Young Black and Proud’ to Celebrate Black History Month

Snapchat is celebrating African American history and Black History Month in a special way.

The video sharing app is releasing special geofilters and launching a new program called “Young Black and Proud.” The program is being used to encourage African American Snapchat users to share their personal stories and experiences.

Also, Snapchat’s team will also produce content celebrating Black History Month on the app to go along with their new “Young Black and Proud” feature.

The new geofilters will be available in Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York Chicago, Boston, and Houston. Also, Snapchat will have unique features in historically black colleges such as Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.

But, this comes after Snapchat launched a filter that some called “instant black face.” Last April, Snapchat released a Bob Marley filter that makes people look like someone with dreadlocks, Rastafari attire, and blackface. Snapchat released the filter the week of 4/20 – the unofficial marijuana holiday. Snapchat would later explain that the new lens was a way to celebrate Bob Marley’s legacy.

Ultimately, Snapchat is gearing up for the reported Initial Public Offering. Snap is reportedly seeking a valuation of $25 billion, which would make the company one of the biggest IPOs in history.

Earlier this month, Snapchat released a new user interface and design. After testing the user interface, the new UI/UX will include a universal search bar making it easier for Snapchat users to send messages, watch new Stories and search for other users.

Black History Month with Social Media

Snapchat is not the only company celebrating Black History month. Twitter launched a chatbot that provides #blackhistory facts and Black community events in the form of direct messages. Twitter users could send a direct message to the account @blackbirds. As a result, Twitter users can learn different facts about African-American history, which is pretty huge since a large percentage of young African-Americans use the app.

Pornhub Now Offers Free Sex Education

Pornhub is now offering sexual education to help people learn about, well quite frankly, sex.

On Wednesday, the adult pornography website announced a new program called “Pornhub Sexual Health Center”. The company hopes the free website will help young men and women learn about sex, sexually transmitted diseases and other topics found in a typical sexual education course.

Sex therapist Dr. Laurie Betito will direct the website and will be working with other experts to provide information and help answer questions related to sex.

The website will be broken down into different categories and sub-categories including ‘Get Healthy’, which features information on reproductive health, STDs, and a section dedicated to “your body”. In addition, Pornhub will also include a second section discussing sexuality and will include frequently asked questions, “real talk” and information on relationships.

So far the website has information on yeast infections, urinary tract infections, and menopause. In addition, Laurie Betito has already started answering frequently asked questions. One such question shared on the website is ‘How often is too often to see someone new you are dating?‘ Betito explains, “If you think that the person you met could be “the one” that could make it work, and you really like the person, there is no issue with seeing that person more than once a week at the beginning. ”

What is Pornhub?

Pornhub has the largest collection of pornography on the Internet. Launched in Montreal, Canada in 2007, the company now has servers all around the world. Earlier this month the company released their annual ‘Year in Review’ where they describe the most popular trending videos on the website and their statistics. The company explained that the website had over 20 billion visits in 2016 with 64 million hits every day and 729 hits per second resulting in over 4 billion hours worth of porn watched last year.

Twitter Releases Blackbirds – A Black History Month Chatbot

In celebration of Black History Month, Twitter announced a new chatbot. Called Blackbirds, Twitter users who send the chatbot a direct message to the @blackbirds account will have the opportunity to chat with the program and learn more about Black history and community events.

Blackbirds currently has four different categories including #BlackHistory, #ForTheCulture, #SelfCare, and #FortheCause. For example, #BlackHistory will share little-known facts about African Americans. Also, #ForTheCause will point out events that are supporting the black community in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

In an interview with Mashable, Twitter’s brand planner for the company’s Brand Strategy Team explained, “Twitter as a whole, and black people on Twitter specifically, influence mainstream conversation in really significant ways — from #BlackLivesMatter and #OscarsSoWhite to #ThanksgivingWithBlackFamilies. We want to use our channel to recognize that.”

Twitter’s new chatbot comes after the company came under scrutiny for the lack of diversity within the corporation. In 2015, a report revealed that only 3% of the company’s employees were either black or Latino. Also, the star of the Ghostbusters remake quit the social network after being accounts insulted her online comparing her to monkeys and calling her racial epithets.

African Americans and Twitter

But, this Black History chat bot move shows the company is paying attention to a huge demographic interacting on the social network. A Pew Research study found 22% of all African Americans online use Twitter, which is 6% higher than their white counterparts. In fact, younger African Americans spend a lot of time on Twitter. The study found 2 out of 5 African-Americans between the ages of 18 to 29 said they use the social network. Meanwhile, only 28% of young whites report using Twitter.

It was President Gerald Ford who told the American people to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” It appears as though Twitter is doing just that.

Ex-‘I’m a Mac’ Actor Justin Long is Now Promoting an Android Phone

Huawei has hired actor Justin Long to star in the company’s new Android smartphone commercial campaign. Long, who previously starred in the famous “I’m a Mac'” TV ads, will now star in an advertising campaign for the largest smartphone manufacturer in China, Huawei.

According to Campaign US report, Huawei hired Long because he starred in those previous Apple commercials.

One of the first commercial campaigns is called “The Interview.” In the video, Long plays a character who is being interviewed by a Mate 9 Android smartphone to become the director of a commercial. The commercial is to poke fun at Long’s previous ties with Apple and is supposed to be ironic considering Android is the ‘PC’ to mobile phones.

The group director behind the advertisement, Jessica Grizzell explained to Campaign US that “There is no doubt that Justin’s history as a pitchman for Apple adds a nice subtext to the videos and builds on Huawei’s challenger position in the market,” Grizzel said.

But, Huawei may have fierce competition as Apple’s recent earnings report demonstrated the iPhone 7 was a hit. In fact, the company reported the highest sales quarter ever for the enterprise.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement that, “We’re thrilled to report that our holiday quarter results generated Apple’s highest quarterly revenue ever, and broke multiple records along the way. We sold more iPhones than ever before and set all-time revenue records for iPhone, Services, Mac and Apple Watch.”

The irony of tech advertising

Huawei’s new commercial comes after Sprint hired the former “Can you hear me now?” actor, Paul Maracelli, who appeared in Verizon Wireless commercials until 2011. In each Verizon Wireless commercial, Maracelli appeared wearing a Verizon jacket, glasses, and saying the famous catch-phrase “Can you hear me now?”.

Now, he’s the spokesman for Sprint. In each commercial, Marcelli references back to his time with Verizon but, explains he switched to Sprint. Instead of the Verizon jacket, Maracelli wears a bright yellow shirt and black jacket, which is synonymous with Sprint’s branding.

Facebook TV Maybe Coming Soon

Facebook may have their eyes set on the TV industry. The popular social media app is working on developing a video application for set-top boxes that can show “TV-quality” shows licensed by the social networking company, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal

The goal of the application would be to increase ad revenue as the application would allow transitioning from the mobile devices to TVs. As a result, Facebook would have a new advertising market, which would increase the advertising rates because higher quality content will be on the Facebook TV app.

In January, Facebook announced an update to their newsfeed and a change to their algorithm. The new update would give longer videos higher ranking on the News Feed.

“As we continue to understand how our community consumes video, we’ve realized that we should, therefore, weight percent completion more heavily the longer a video is, to avoid penalizing longer videos,” the company explained in a statement.

Also, Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the company would be increasing the amount of video content on the social networking site. Mark Zuckerberg was reportedly meeting with producers about creating original content to be shown on Facebook. The Hollywood Reporter reports the co-founder of College Humor is leading the program.

Facebook is following in the footsteps of YouTube with original content. YouTube received $100 million in funding from investors. The video-streaming social network partnered with Hollywood producers to create higher quality videos on the platform.

Ultimately, by providing longer and videos YouTube and Facebook are attempting to acquire quality video content. In turn, advertisers would most likely spend more money to advertise on a premium video than on a 6-second cat video.

Gabrielle Union Starts Hair Care Product Line For Textured Hair

Gabrielle Union is following in Oprah Winfrey’s  footsteps as the actress launches her personal hair care line for women.

Gabrielle Union’s new hair-care brand is called “Flawless” and will feature ten products costing between $19 to 29 dollars. The products will include shampoos, conditioners, and other products for women with textured hair.

In a press release, Flawless’ mission is to “address issues women with textured hair face most often such as dryness, split ends, damage, brittleness, and frizz.”

Gabrielle Union also commented on her new product line, “I myself have suffered from one too many bad hair days and have never found one range of products that met all of my needs. I wanted to change that,” Union said. “This line is all about healthy hair and versatility – so you can change up your styles without compromising the condition of your hair. I want women to be able to express themselves, flawlessly!”

Flawless will become available on March 1st and will hit Ulta stores in April 2017.

Who is Gabrielle Union?

Gabrielle Union started her career in the 1990s appearing supporting roles in hit teen comedies such as She’s All That and 10 Things I Hate About You. But, it would be her 2000 supporting role in Bring It On that made Union a leading lady. Study: Kids are Closer to Dogs Than Their Brothers and Sisters

While some toys are reportedly spying on children, a new study from the University of Cambridge suggests kids have closer relationships with their pets than their siblings.

Psychology researchers have published a study arguing that children are more attached to pets than to their brothers and sisters.

The Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology published the study this week. Scientists studied a group of 12-year-olds from 77 different families. All of the children involved in the survey had at least one sibling and one pet. The results of the research found children had stronger relationships with their pet than their siblings. In fact, University of Cambridge researchers found children had a better connection with their pet dogs than cats and any other animals. Also, researchers discovered boys and girls have different relationships with their pets. Scientists found girls disclose more with their pets than males.

In a statement, the study’s lead author, Matt Cassells, explained that “Anyone who has loved a childhood pet knows that we turn to them for companionship and disclosure, just like relationships between people.”

“We wanted to know how strong these relationships are with pets relative to other close family ties,” Cassells added.

Cassells argues that kids have a closer bond with pets than they do with their brothers or sisters even though pets do not talk back. “Even though pets may not fully understand or respond verbally, the level of disclosure to pets was no less than to siblings,” Cassells remarked. “The fact that pets cannot understand or talk back may even be a benefit as it means they are completely non-judgmental.”

The WALTHAM Center for Pet Nutrition and the Economic and Social Research Council collaborated with the University of Cambridge to complete the study. Dr. Nancy Gee, the Human-Animal Interaction Research Manager at WALTHAM, said, “The social support that adolescents receive from pets may well support psychological well-being later in life, but there is still more to learn about the long-term impact of pets on ‘s development.”

This news comes after researchers found dogs enjoy listening to soft rock and reggae as the music helps canines relax.

Say Goodbye to Club Penguin as the Disney Owned Social Network is Shutting Down

Club Penguin, the Disney-owned social network, announced on Tuesday that the website is shutting down. After 11 years, the company will launch a new product, Club Penguin Island.

In a blog post, the company explains that Club Penguin Island will include new features and gameplay that will provide “a uniquely penguin experience.”

As a result of the new social network will be transitioning to the new platform and discontinuing the current virtual game on March 29, 2017.

So what does this mean for current Club Penguin users?

The company explains that the desktop and app will no longer be available as of today. Also, current paid members can enjoy the app until March 29th.

“We are deeply grateful for your time and enthusiasm since the beginning, and we’d like to thank each and every one of you in the Club Penguin community – we can’t wait for you to see what’s coming next,” the social network said.

Until February 16th, users can pre-register for the new update and gain access to in-game rewards.

Some fans of the game were not too happy with the new changes.

Uber Drives Partnership with Daimler for Self-Driving Cars

Uber and Daimler announced a new partnership on Tuesday that will allow the car company to introduce their line of self-driving cars for Uber. In a blog post, Uber’s CEO explains that Daimler will operate their self-driving cars on Uber’s ride-sharing network.

“We are incredibly excited by the potential for self-driving cars to further our mission of bringing reliable transportation to everyone, everywhere,” Travis Kalanick explained. “They will also help to reduce traffic accidents, which today kill many people a year; free up the huge amount of space currently used to park the world’s billion-plus cars; and cut congestion, which is choking our cities.”

Kalanick explained that he at one point envisioned manufacturing cars for the Uber company. But, after visiting a car manufacturing plant, he realized that it was “really hard”. So instead of building cars, Uber decided to partner with auto manufacturers. “We can combine Uber’s global ridesharing network with the world-class vehicles of companies like Daimler so that Uber riders can have a great experience getting around their cities.”

This news comes after #DeleteUber went viral over the weekend following the company’s response to Trump’s immigration ban. On Saturday, the New York Taxi Workers Alliance refused to pick up passengers at New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport for one hour. The alliance called for other taxi drivers to protest the immigration ban. But, Uber’s Twitter account posted a tweet saying, ““Surge pricing has been turned off at Airport. This may result in longer wait times. Please be patient.” Many protesters believed as a sign the company was attempting to profit off of the taxi strike. However, Uber later stated that they were sorry for the confusion and it was not meant to break up any strikes.

Meanwhile, to profit off of the #DeleteUber social media movement against Uber, the ride-sharing company competitor, Lyft, donated a million dollars to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Walmart Announces Free Two-Day Shipping

On Tuesday, Walmart announced free two-day shipping on millions of items listed on their website. Also, in comparison to Amazon Prime, Walmart reveals that no membership is required. Walmart announces the new program will provide free shipping to a customer’s house after they spend over $35 to $50. The new free two-day shipping program will also be available for popular items such as food, baby products, and electronics.

The company’s CEO, Marc Lore, posted in a statement, “Two-day free shipping is the first of many moves we will be making to enhance the customer experience and accelerate growth.”

“In today’s world of e-commerce, two-day free shipping is table stakes. It no longer makes sense to charge for it,” added Lore.

Earlier this month, Walmart announced a plan to hire 34,000 jobs and improve training for their current employees. In fact, the company revealed their plans on investing $7 billion into the company, which will pay for construction, remodeling of stores as well as distribution centers.

Amazon Prime membership is known for providing free two-day shipping for their members. However, Membership to Amazon Prime is not free. That said, Amazon still has additional benefits over Walmart.
