Older Doctors Linked to Higher Death Rates, Study Finds

0

A new study suggests younger doctors are better at treating patients than older physicians.

According to a new study posted this week in the British Medical Journal, being handled by an older doctor may, in fact, increase your chance of dying within a month of being admitted to a hospital if you’re 65 years and older.

Researchers surveyed over 700,000 American hospital patients who received Medicare between 2011 and 2014 and almost 19,000 doctors were involved in the study. Ultimately, the study found that the 30-day mortality rate was 10.8% for seniors treated by doctors under the age of 40 years old.  Meanwhile, the death rate for physicians between the ages of 40 to 59 years old was 11.1% and 12.1% when treated by a doctor age 60  or older.

It is important to highlight the that the study did indicate that older physicians who deal of high volume with patients did not experience the same mortality rate numbers. Scientists found that for every 77 patients treated by a doctor age 60 or older, one fewer patient would die within 30 days if those same patients have been treated by Dr. who was younger than 40.

Ultimately, the study is a paradigm shift from the long-held believed myth that older doctors provide better care than younger physicians because they have more experience. The study found that newer doctors have undergone more recent training and as a result can make safer decisions for their patients.

Professor Anupam Jena, the co-author, explained, “Older physicians bring invaluable richness of knowledge and depth of experience, yet their clinical skills may begin to lag behind over time.”

Researchers do, however, suggest that findings should not deter people from seeing old physicians.

Last December researchers found that patients of female physicians live longer. Researchers found that hospital patients who are treated by a female doctor are less likely to die within a month of going to the hospital in comparison to hospital patients who are treated by male physicians. Also, patients handled by a male doctor were 5% more likely to go back to the hospital.

U.S. Workers Failing Drug Tests At the Highest Rate in Over a Decade

1

According to reports, more US workers are testing positive for illegal drugs. The Wall Street Journal reports, the number of workers who tested positive for marijuana increased by 4%. In addition, other drugs also rose.

What is causing the rise in positive drug tests? The Wall Street Journal explains, “The increases come against a backdrop of more liberal marijuana state laws and an apparent resurgence in the use of drugs like cocaine and methamphetamine.”

Quest Diagnostics Inc., one of the largest workplace drug testing labs in the country, conducted a study and found 4.2% of their 8.9 million drug tests came back positive, which is up from 4% in 2015. It is the highest rate of drug use among U.S. workers since 2004, when 4.5% of tests showed evidence of illicit drug use.

Currently, marijuana remains the most commonly used drug among United States workers. The drug was identified in 2.5% of all urine tests in 2016, which is up .1% in comparison to 2015.

“This year’s findings are remarkable because they show increased rates of drug positivity for the most common illicit drugs across virtually all drug test specimen types and in all testing populations,” said Barry Sample, PhD, senior director, science and technology, Quest Diagnostics Employer Solutions. “Our analysis suggests that employers committed to creating a safe, drug-free work environment should be alert to the potential for drug use among their workforce.”

This news comes after, the Canadian government released plans to legalize marijuana on July 2018. In addition, a December 2016 study found legalized recreational marijuana has changed the way teens view pot.

For the First Time Ever, Women in their 30s are Having More Babies than Younger Moms

0

According to a new study, American women in their 30s are having more babies than younger moms.

Researchers say the shift is due to more women waiting longer to have children and the drop in teenage pregnancies. Important to note, for the past 30 years, women in their 20s have the highest birth rates. But, in 2016, data has suggested that women in their early 30s are having more babies than younger women, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study.

The birth rate for women ages 30 to 34 was about 103 per 100,000 women. Meanwhile, the rate for women ages 25 to 29 was 102 per 100,000 women.

As a result, it is becoming more common to see older parents with kids in elementary and high school.

Researchers also found the overall birthrate was down slightly in 2016, with 62 births per 100,000 women ages 14 to 44. In addition, the average age a woman has the first child is now 28 years old.

This news comes after a report by the Social Security Administration that said Caitlin is no longer a popular name. In fact, in the report researchers found that all four versions of the name Caitlin have dropped out of the top 1000 baby names. Many people argue that the name;s quick decline came after the former reality star, Caitlyn Jenner announced a new gender. In 2015, Bruce Jenner, an Olympic gold medalist, announced her status as a transgender woman.

10-Year-Old Chokes on a Fidget Spinner in Houston, Texas

0

Fidget spinners are the latest craze, but one woman is warning others about her daughter’s nearly fatal experience with the toy.

A fidget spinner has two or three paddles that can be spun, similar to a fan, which in theory, allows people to relax. A mother is sharing her experience with others in hopes that it will be a warning for parents to understand the choking hazards of the latest trend.

Kelly Rose Joniec took to Facebook that she was on her way home on Saturday when she heard her daughter choking in the backseat. She immediately pulled over and discovered that her daughter had swallowed a piece from her fidget spinner. After attempting to remove the piece of metal, Joniec took her 10-year-old daughter to the nearest urgent care center.

Doctors were unable to tell where the object had gotten stuck. She was later taken to Texas Children’s Hospital, and an x-ray revealed that the metal piece was lodged in the girl’s esophagus.

In the Facebook post, Joniec explains, “Britton was taken to surgery to endoscopically locate and remove the object. Fortunately, we had a positive outcome, but it was pretty scary there for a while…not only because of the initial ingestion, but then the concern about the composition and structure of the object, and finally, the risk with general anesthesia.”

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission told CNN, “Anything with small parts, keep it away from young children. If it can fit through a toilet paper roll, don’t give it to a young child, and make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.”

It is important to note, that many toys come with choking hazard warnings. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, choking is a leading cause of injury and death among children.

It is important to note that several schools have banned fidget spinners because they are distracting students at school. That said, the device is suggested to help people who have problems concentrating, in particular for those battling ADHD.

If Asteroid Hit a Few Seconds Later, Dinosaurs Might Still Be Here

0

Just days after scientists named a dinosaur off a character from Ghostbusters movie and two major dinosaur discoveries, researchers are now claiming that dinosaurs could have survived the asteroid crash that hit the Earth if it had struck 30 seconds sooner or later.

Humans may not be inhabiting planet earth if the timing of the asteroid had been only a few seconds different, according to a new BBC Documentary.

The Day the Dinosaurs Died broadcasts on Monday on BBC2 centers around a group of scientists who drilled the crater where the asteroid struck 66 million years ago.

The asteroid landed 24 miles off the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico causing an 111 million wide and 20-mile deep crater. In fact, the asteroid was hit the earth at 40,000 mph Researchers drilled into the crater and found it contained high levels of sulfur. Scientists argue that the asteroid vaporized the ground and the reaction filled the sky with dust and blocked out the sun. As a result, this cooled the planet’s temperature below freezing for a decade and ultimately wiped out the dinosaurs.

Animals that were not killed by natural disasters most likely died from starvation as their food supply waned due to the drastic environmental changes.

Surprisingly, researchers argue that if the asteroid landed in the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans, it would have been less catastrophic. Professor of geophysics at the University of Texas at Austin, who organized the drill, said: “the asteroid struck Earth in a very unfortunate place.”

Joanna Morgan, a professor at Imperial College London, co-led the study and said 100 billion tons of sulfur chemicals spread across the atmosphere by the asteroid.

Thankfully, modern day scientists are currently planning on coming up with a plan to prevent an asteroid from hitting earth.

African-Americans Moving to Less Segregated Neighborhoods Lowers Blood Pressure, Study Finds

0

A new study by Northwestern Medicine has found blood pressure readings of African-Americans dropped between one to five points after they moved to less segregated neighborhoods.

In a longitudinal study analyzing the impact of living in the less segregated areas on blood pressure. Previous research found that racial residential segregation is linked to a prevalence of hypertension.

The lead author of the study and assistant professor of preventative medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine explained, “This study provides stronger, more direct evidence that segregation impacts blood pressure and harms the health of African-Americans. I believe it’s related to the stress of living in these neighborhoods.”

Scientists examined racial residential segregation with blood pressure and more than 2000 African-American participants involved in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study –  a national longitudinal study of adults with been followed for nearly 25 years. Researchers looked at associations between individuals who have moved from segregated residential communities to less segregated neighborhoods for African-Americans involved in the study, approximately 80% of people had their blood pressure drop by 1 mm Hg,  after moving to a less segregated part of town.

Researchers argue that African-Americans who move to less segregated areas experienced less exposure to violence and more opportunities, which is commonly linked to a reduction in blood pressure.

“In a less violent area with better resources, you are more secure about your family’s safety and your children’s future in better schools,” Kershaw explained. “You see opportunities for the economic mobility of your kids. And there is better access to good grocery stores, health care, and an economically vital business district.”

Changes in blood pressure are not related to poverty or household income. That said, the more a person becomes educated, research has shown individuals have lower blood pressure.

“Several strategies need to be employed at the policy level to reduce the persistent racial health disparities we see in the U.S.,” Kershaw said. “This includes policies that improve access to resources for those living in segregated neighborhoods and policies that provide residents living in segregated neighborhoods with the opportunity to move to neighborhoods with better access to resources.”

Jessica Alba’s The Honest Company Recalls Baby Wipes for Mold

Jessica Alba’s company, The Honest Company, announced on Monday that the firm is voluntarily recalling certain types of baby wipes. The company explained that they voluntarily recall the baby wipes due to the possible presence of mold. In a statement, the company said, “We believe the affected product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences; however, impacted wipes do have a spotted discoloration and the aesthetics are unacceptable.”

The company added, “Out of an abundance of caution, The Honest Company has decided to recall certain lots of this product voluntarily.”

The wipes are included in the company’s Honest Diaper Cakes, Baby Basics Gift Set and the Baby Arrival Gift Set.

At this time, no other Honest Company products are involved in this recall and consumers may return the affected products to where they purchased the product for a full refund.

To determine if your product is included in the recalls, the company asks customers to enter their lot number in a search field, which can be found on their website.

It is important to note that Jessica Alba’s company has faced several lawsuits in the past of the effectiveness of their products. Moreover, last January the company conducted a voluntary recall of their organic baby powder over concerns that the product caused eye and skin infections. The company was sued in 2015 after a consumer said that the products contain “unnatural” and “synthetic” ingredients, and the company’s sunscreen is “ineffective.”
