Planet the Size of Neptune Discovered with a Watery Atmosphere

0

An exoplanet the size of Neptune was discovered orbiting close to its parent star, and researchers now believe that it has an atmosphere that contains both water vapor and clouds.

Researchers using both NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes discovered the planet, which is located approximately 437 light years away from earth. The planet, which is called HAT-P-26b, circles its star once every 4.2 Earth days, meaning that it is probably tidally locked, with the same hemisphere is always facing the sun and the other side is always facing away from it.

While its size and mass are similar to Neptune, the planet is composed of mostly hydrogen and helium, similar to Jupiter and Saturn.

Researchers led by David Sing of the University of Exeter in England and Hannah Wakeford of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, studied the planet transiting or passing in front of its star with two NASA telescopes.

The team of researchers was able to identify the molecules in the world’s atmospheres. Scientists claim that water molecules were clearly abundant in the world’s atmosphere.

“For this mass range, this is the strongest water-absorption feature that we have ever measured,” Wakeford explained in a statement with Space.com.

Researchers also discovered exotic clouds travel within the planet’s atmosphere. Unlike clouds on Earth, which are composed of water vapor, these clouds are consist of disodium sulfide, giving the planet’s sky a different appearance. “This would be a very alien sky that you would be looking at. These clouds would cause scattering in all of the colors, so you’d get a kind of scatters, washed-out gray sky, which is interesting if you were looking through these clouds,” Wakeford explained.

Data collected during the study also allowed for the researchers to measure the atmosphere’s consistency of other elements other than hydrogen and helium. Researchers found that the planet had a metallicity more like that of Jupiter and Saturn in our solar system. In our solar system, the bigger the world, the lower its metallicity is. Because HAT-P-26b does not fit that mold, researchers now believe they may have formed closer to the star and slowly drifted away.

“Astronomers have just begun to investigate the atmospheres of these distant Neptune-mass planets, and almost right away, we found an example that goes against the trend in our solar system,” Wakeford said in a NASA statement.

The findings of the study will be published in the May 11 issue in the journal of Science.

Human Sense of Smell is Better Than We Thought

0

New research suggests that the human sense of smell is just as good as other mammals including dogs and rodents. This study is a paradigm shift from the usual assumption that humans have a weak sense of smell.

Led by Rutgers University neurobiologist John McGann, who has been working for years to disprove the long believed submit that humans have a poor sense of smell, argues humans have as many functional odor receptors as other mammals that are considered to have a better sense of smell.

The olfactory receptor neurons in the nose work by making contacting with molecules that contain the odor, and they send this information to parts of the brain.

McGann argued in his paper that the misconception about a poor human sense of smell began in the 19th century when French Anatomist Paul Broca claimed that the part of the brain that is responsible for processing smile was smaller if compared to the size of the human body. He argued that other mammals have a clearly better sense of smell because their olfactory bulb was bigger in comparison to their body.

“Through a chain of misunderstandings and exaggerations beginning with Broca himself, this conclusion warped into the modern misapprehension that humans have a poor sense of smell,” wrote McGann. “Broca viewed smell as an animalistic sense that drove irrational behavior and thus must be diminished in importance in a rational being with free will.”

As a result of Broca’s argument, the belief passed from one generation to the next and now is considered to be true.

John McGann started researching the science behind the human sense of smell 14 years ago. According to his study, humans have approximately 1000 odor receptor genes, which is similar to the number of odor receptor genes of mice, which have 1,100. McGann also claims that there is no support for the belief that a larger olfactory bulb increases the sense of smell based on the size.

“Dogs may be better than humans at discriminating the urines on a fire hydrant and humans may be better than dogs at discriminating the odors of fine wine, but few such comparisons have actual experimental support,” McGann writes.

Study: Regular Physical Exercise Linked to Slowing the Aging Process

0

Working out for 30 minutes five days a week can extend your lifespan by up to 10 years. According to a new study, researchers at the Brigham Young University found that high levels of exercise slow down the aging process. Researchers were surprised to find that those who regularly engaged in high levels of exercise such as jogging for five days a week had longer telomeres in comparison to others who did not exercise at all.

Telomeres are repetitive segments of DNA found at the end of each and every chromosome. As a cell grows older, telomeres become shorter. Consequently, scientists correlate short telomeres with age.

Researchers argue that some people seem younger than her actual age because they are more physically active, which results in less biological aging.

Exercise Science Professor Larry Tucker explained in a statement, “Just because you’re 40, doesn’t mean you’re 40-years-old biologically. We all know people that seem younger than their actual age. The more physically active we are; the less biological aging takes place in our bodies.”

Researchers for able to discover this after analyzing nearly 6000 adults from data taken from the CDC’s National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey, which tracks telomere lengths in research subjects.

Rise of Obesity in America

Despite this research breakthrough, within the United States, only 20% of people get enough exercise and nearly 64% never exercise at all. Moreover, research has shown that 40% of a child’s weight is linked to their parents.

In addition, scientists discovered a correlation between child development issues and obese parents. 75% of children with overweight fathers had problems interacting with others. Furthermore, children with two obese parents were 300% more likely to have problem-solving issues by the time they turn 3 years old.

Man Allegedly Used Snapchat to Lure a Teen for a Sex-Filled Road Trip

While Snapchat is becoming creative when it comes to using the platform for hiring and advertising, people are using the platform to allegedly target teenagers.

A man used Snapchat to lure a runaway teen to Los Angeles from Australia where she joined him on a road trip to New York that included stopping to have sex across several states, according to a report by the New York Post.

Sean Price, who is 3  and has 40 prior arrests, met the teen through Snapchat last October. Two months later, Price sent the young girl $1,500, and she flew to California.

New York Post reports that Price knew she was underage and that did not stop him from having sex with the teenager.

Authorities notified the US law enforcement including the Department of Homeland Security. That is when law enforcement officials were able to track down Price’s mother’s home in Jamaica, Queens. Cops went there last Thursday, but his mom allegedly told them her son and the girl were not home.

Price had prior arrests including robbery, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, criminal trespass, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a controlled substance, according to the New York Post. Price was charged Friday with third-degree rape.

This news comes after Snap, Inc, the company that owns Snapchat, reported a troubling Q1 after going public. In fact, users added to Snapchat were not high enough to prove that the company could compete with Facebook. As a result, following the company’s business call shares of Snap opened 20% lower on Thursday.

Ebola is Back, Several People Die After Contracting the Deadly Virus

0

Researchers are currently working on a vaccine for Ebola. Then, last April, a man with a nosebleed, vomiting, fever and bloody stools arrived at a clinic in the northern province of Bas-Uele in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He would later die.

Several days later, several other people began getting sick exhibiting similar symptoms. The pattern started to erupt like a scene in the movie Contagion. Now six people in the hospital, three people have died, and the Democratic Republic of Congo says at least five people have been tested positive for Ebola.

According to the government and World Health Organization, officials are traveling to the remote area of Bas-Uele to further investigate the disease.

“An investigation team led by the Ministry of Health and supported by WHO and partners has deployed and is expected to reach the affected area in the coming days”, says Dr Peter Salama, WHO Executive Director for Emergencies.

Researchers argue that in order to prevent the spread of the deadly virus they must track down, test, and isolate suspected cases. Moreover, there will also need to protect health workers and educate the population about ways to prevent getting the deadly virus.

Ebola Virus Outbreak 2014

In 2014, the worst outbreak of Ebola killed nearly 12,000 people in West Africa. It would be the largest outbreak since the virus was first discovered in 1976. The virus is spread among countries in Guinea to Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Currently, according to the World Health Organization, it is believed that the virus can spread through fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family as this family of animals hosts the Ebola virus.

How does Ebola spread to humans?

Ebola spreads to humans through close contact with bodily fluids of infected animals such as blood, secretions, and organs. The World Health Organization claims fruit bats, monkeys, chimpanzees, gorillas, porcupines and antelopes that are found sick or dead in the forest can spread the virus from animals to humans. From that point on, the Ebola then spreads from humans other humans through direct contacts with an individual’s infected blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids including contaminated clothing.

Healthcare workers are also frequently infected with the disease while trading patients who are suspected of having the disease.

A Bitcoin is Now Worth Nearly $2,000

The digital currency, Bitcoin, has a 94% year-to-date gain and is now worth nearly $2000 with estimates giving a single bitcoin the valuation of $1843. The extremely volatile digital currency has led to many people to compare it as a foreign exchange and even drawn comparisons to gold. In fact, a single unit of Bitcoin surpassed the dollar valuation of an ounce of gold this year, which is worth $600 per ounce. That said the cost of bitcoin had swung dramatically over the past year. Meanwhile gold has relatively been more stable.

Current estimates suggest that by the year 2110 we will reach the final supply of bitcoins and there will be theoretically 21 million digital bitcoins in existence -meaning the total value of digital coins at today’s market price is just under $39 billion. However, according to Bloomberg, the total valuation of gold stocks, which is currently 6 billion Troy ounces, is valued at $7.3 trillion with today’s current estimates.

That said, bitcoin has become the go-to currency due to its anonymous features. Many hackers and cyber attacks use bitcoins as a way to hold computer systems ransom and make money anonymously. Last March, hackers were reportedly holding Apple for ransom and demanding bitcoins and return.

Nevertheless, the Internal Revenue Service is keeping an eye on bitcoins. Last November, the IRS began an investigation into businesses and individuals who use bitcoins to avoid paying taxes. In fact, the IRS found two taxpayers who used separate Coinbase accounts to hide Bitcoin transactions as expenses on their tax returns. Consequently, the IRS argues that other users are also evading taxes through such fraud schemes.

Caitlyn is No Longer a Popular Name After Caitlyn Jenner Came Out as Transgender

Every year the Social Security Administration releases the top 1000 baby names and also list baby names that increased or decreased in popularity. Surprisingly, all four versions of Caitlin dropped out of the top 1000.

A year after Caitlin Jenner announced her new name and gender, the popularity of the name Caitlin fell more than any other baby name. According to the Social Security Administration’s annual list of the most popular baby names, the four names out dropped off were all variations of Caitlin Jenner’s name including Caitlin, Caitlyn, Katelynn, and Kaitlynn.

Many people argue that the names quickly became controversial after the former reality star announced her new gender.

The Social Security Administration’s annual list also revealed Noah was a top baby name for boys for the fourth year in a row followed by Liam, William, Mason, and James.

In 2015, Bruce Jenner, an Olympic gold medalist, announced her status as a transgender woman.

This news comes after Caitlyn Jenner’s reality TV series I Am Cait was canceled after low ratings. Moreover, Jenner’s latest book, which was released last week, has seen for book sales. In fact, Jenner’s book is currently ranked 81 on Amazon’s bestseller list for biographies.

That said, Jenner said she is considering running for president. Last April, during an event at New York’s 92nd St. Y community center, Jenner discussed her political involvement and her Republican connections. Even though she endorsed Trump in the past, she claims her work with the transgender community was her focus. “My loyalties are not with Donald Trump. I will come after him and come after Republicans if they come after my community,” Jenner explained.

She added, “Or would I be better working from the inside. If that is the case… I would seriously look at a run. It just depends where I could be more effective.”

Elon Musk Unveils the Machine that Will Tunnel Under Los Angeles

Elon Musk revealed on Friday via social media that his tunneling company has started construction on a passage underneath Los Angeles, California. Via Instagram in a series of posts, the billionaire entrepreneur provided details about his plan Boring Co., which he formed after getting sick and tired of Los Angeles’s notorious traffic jams.

The Tesla CEO debuted a video demonstration of the company’s ability to create an underground sled that would take cars from one place to another at up to 125 mph. The video shows a metal roller coaster ride through a tunnel at high speeds. That said, Musk did not provide details about the demonstration or technical information as to how it will all work.

Ultimately, the Boring company illustrates Musk’s vision for a future of underground tunnels that will alleviate traffic. He explained on Instagram that the corporation’s first tunnel would run from Los Angeles International Airport to Culver City, Santa Monica, Westwood and Sherman Oaks.

“One of the most soul-destroying things is traffic,” Musk said during an interview at TED Talks. “It affects people in every part of the world. It takes away so much of your life. It’s horrible. It’s particularly horrible in L.A.”

Musk is quickly becoming a jack of all trades. The South African entrepreneur has his hands in renewable energy, immigration, Tesla semi trucks, and a company that plans to connect your brain to a computer. Not to mention, musk has taken customer service historically to new levels.

Orcas are Hunting and Eating Great-White-Shark Livers

0

Three great white sharks have washed ashore in South Africa this month with their livers missing.

Researchers with the Dyer Island conservation trust examine the sharks and concluded that based on the sharks’ injuries orcas most likely kill them and ate their livers, according to a study published on the Marine Dynamics blog. Moreover, one of the sharks even had their heart eaten by possibly an orca. While it is not uncommon for killer whales to target and eat great whites, it is important to point out that it is also not typical for to occur.

orcas

Typically, orcas hunt a particular type of shark most commonly the broadness seven-gill sharks and eat their livers. Orcas also hunt sea lions and smaller sharks and eat their livers and other organs, leaving the rest of their organs behind.

Why do Orcas target the liver? Sharks don’t have a swim bladder like other marine animals that allow them to stay buoyant. Instead, sharks have very large livers that are filled with fats to allow them to float. In addition, they also contain a high level a chemical known as squalene that is used to produce steroids and hormones.

Screen Time Linked to Speech Development Delays in Young Children

0

Screen time is becoming the latest topic of research as more and more parents are putting a tablet, computer, or TV in front of their child. As a result, researchers and scientists are trying to discover how this is impacting child development. Last October, doctors suggested setting new screen time limits for kids.

The American Academy of Pediatrics argued that parents should limit the amount of time children are spending in front of a screen. Previously it was believed that two hours of screen time was a maximum for children under the age of two.

However, researchers argue that two hours may be too much for children two years old and younger. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics argued that infants and babies ages 18 months and the younger should not be given any screen time at all.

Now, new research suggests that screen time for young kids causes to speech development issues. Doctors and scientists argue that time on a tablet may slow down speech development in young children. Pediatricians at the Hospital for Sick Children in Canada examined the effect of screen time on 900 children between the ages of six months and two years old.

Researchers found a 49% increased risk of delayed speech for every additional 30 minutes spent using a touchscreen. While previous studies promoted parents from limiting the amount of screen time, this was the first time there was an established link between screen time use and speech delays.

Researchers argue that expressive language such as the ability to convey feelings and information was delayed the most due to excessive screen time.

That said, screen time did not affect other types of communication such as social interaction or body language.

The study was led by Dr. Catherine Birken. Birken found that by 18 months 20% of the children in the study used tablets, smartphones or other devices on average of 28 minutes day. Ultimately, researchers argue that even apps that are marketed as educational should be discouraged.

One researcher tells Time that children are unable to establish and distinguish the differences between what they see on the screen and what is happening in real life. “Symbolic thinking and memory flexibility is something that apps haven’t been able to overcome, no matter how interactive they are,” says Dr. Jenny Radesky.
